ex vivo MRI was carried out. The atheromas were then observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and immunohistochemical staining targeted toward the macrophages was performed.
Ex vivo MRI demonstrated robust enhancement of the atherosclerotic plaques along the aortic wall. CLSM images showed accumulation of PEGylated MFSNs in the atherosclerotic plaques, and histological examination revealed the localization of MFSNs in the macrophages present in the lesion. Therefore, PEGylated MFSNs could function as an effective multimodal imaging agent in the identification of macrophage activity in atherosclerotic plaques.

The radiotherapy (RT) responses of gastroenteropancreatic (GEP)-origin neuroendocrine tumors remain unclear. We report cases of favorable response after localized RT of GEP-origin neuroendocrine ...carcinomas (GEP-NECs).
1. An 82-year-old male presented with a lower esophageal mass. Positron emission tomography computed tomography (PET-CT) scan showed a lower esophageal mass and gastrohepatic lymph nodes. 2. A 52-year-old female presented with abdominal discomfort. CT scan showed a 9.8 cm-sized enhancing mass in the lesser sac abutting the stomach, pancreas and liver. 3. A 54-year-old male patient presented with anal pain and bleeding. CT scan showed a remnant mass in the perirectal area after trans-anal excision.
The diagnoses of GEP-NECs were pathologically confirmed by biopsy or excision, and immunohistochemical stainings of Ki-67, CD56, synaptophysin and chromogranin-A.
1. The patient was treated with definitive RT. 2. The patient was treated with RT after two cycles of etoposide-cisplatin chemotherapy. 3. The patient was treated with adjuvant RT.
1. Complete remission was achieved based on CT scan four months after RT. 2. CT scan showed partial regression of the mass with a 5 cm-diameter at six months after RT. Adjuvant chemotherapy was administered after RT. 3. The residual mass was almost completely regressed at CT scan four months after RT.
In cases of GEP-NECs, RT can be a useful treatment modality with favorable tumor response for patients with inoperable conditions or those suffering from bulky tumor masses.
Calcifying fibrous pseudotumor (CFP) of the pleura is a rare benign lesion. Eleven cases of CFP of the pleura have been reported, and multiple nodules were present in seven cases. We report one ...additional case of multiple CFP occurring in the right pleura. The patient was 35-year-old asymptomatic male who presented at our hospital with incidentally found multiple pleural nodules. Diagnosis was made by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery and complete resection of all disseminated lesions was possible with followed thoracotomy. Although multiple lesions may prevent the complete resection and CFP of the pleura is considered as benign lesion, complete surgical resection of all lesions seems to be the best therapy for CFP of the pleura to reduce additional dissemination and local recurrence.

The first edition of 'A Standardized Pathology Report for Gastric Cancer' was initiated by the Gastrointestinal Pathology Study Group of the Korean Society of Pathologists and published 17 years ago. ...Since then, significant advances have been made in the pathologic diagnosis, molecular genetics, and management of gastric cancer (GC). To reflect those changes, a committee for publishing a second edition of the report was formed within the Gastrointestinal Pathology Study Group of the Korean Society of Pathologists. This second edition consists of two parts: standard data elements and conditional data elements. The standard data elements contain the basic pathologic findings and items necessary to predict the prognosis of GC patients, and they are adequate for routine surgical pathology service. Other diagnostic and prognostic factors relevant to adjuvant therapy, including molecular biomarkers, are classified as
to allow each pathologist to selectively choose items appropriate to the environment in their institution. We trust that the standardized pathology report will be helpful for GC diagnosis and facilitate large-scale multidisciplinary collaborative studies.

OBJECTIVE
To evaluate the protective effects of cranberry fruit, which have known antioxidant effects, on infection‐induced oxidative renal damage in a rabbit model of vesico‐ureteric reflux (VUR).
...MATERIALS AND METHODS
In all, 36 New Zealand male rabbits were divided into five groups, with a sham operation in four rabbits serving as the control (group 1). To create unilateral VUR the roof of the left intravesical ureter was incised, and VUR confirmed 2 weeks after surgery. In all, 32 rabbits with VUR were divided into four groups; 2, VUR alone (with sterile urine); 3, a group infected with Escherichia coli; 4, with intravesical E. coli instillation but fed cranberries; and 5, intravesical E. coli instillation plus an intraperitoneal injection with melatonin group. At 3 weeks after surgery the rabbits were killed, the kidneys obtained and examined histopathologically to evaluate inflammation, fibrosis and tubular changes. Oxidative renal damage was evaluated by measuring malondialdehyde in the renal tissue.
RESULTS
Grossly, the refluxing kidney was larger than the contralateral normal kidney, and the refluxing ureter was dilated and tortuous. Microscopy of tissues from the kidneys in group 3 showed apparent periglomerular mononuclear cell infiltration, tubular dilatation and atrophy, and interstitial fibrosis. The kidneys from groups 2, 4 and 5 showed mild mononuclear cell infiltration with no interstitial fibrosis. The level of malondialdehyde in the kidneys of group 3 was significantly higher than that in group 2, 4 and 5 (P < 0.05); the level in groups 4 and 5 did not differ significantly from that in group 2.
CONCLUSIONS
This study shows that cranberries have an anti‐inflammatory effect through their antioxidant function and might prevent infection‐induced oxidative renal damage. Thus, clinically cranberries might be used as a beneficial adjuvant treatment to prevent damage due to pyelonephritis in children with VUR.

Ligands for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptorgamma (PPARgamma), a member of the ligand-activated nuclear receptor superfamily, exhibit anti-tumoral effects and are associated with de novo ...synthesis of proteins involved in regulating the cell cycle and cell survival/death. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is an etiologic agent for gastric adenocarcinoma, and raises the cell turnover of gastric epithelium. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of PPARgamma ligand rosiglitazone on the cell proliferation and the expressions of p27 and Skp2 protein in H. pylori infected gastric epithelial cells.
We examined the expression of PPARgamma by Western blot in H. pylori infected AGS human gastric epithelial cells. The effect of rosiglitazone on the survival of H. pylori infected AGS cells was assessed by cell viability assay. After the treatment of rosiglitazone in H. pylori infected AGS cells, the expressions of p27 and Skp2 were assessed by Western blot.
The expression of PPARgamma protein was increased in H. pylori infected AGS cells. Cell growth was inhibited and decreased in dose- and time- dependent manner in H. pylori infected AGS cells treated with rosiglitazone. A decrease in Skp2 expression and a reciprocal increase in p27 expression were found in dose- and time-dependent manner in H. pylori infected AGS cells treated with rosiglitazone.
Rosiglitazone inhibited the growth of H. pylori infected AGS cells. Rosiglitazone attenuated Skp2 expression, thereby promoting p27 accumulation in H. pylori infected human gastric epithelial cells. Further studies will be needed to find the effects of accumulation on cell turnover in H. pylori infection and the role in the H. pylori-associated gastric carcinogenesis.
