As important components in saline agriculture, halophytes can help to provide food for a growing world population. In addition to being potential crops in their own right, halophytes are also ...potential sources of salt-resistance genes that might help plant breeders and molecular biologists increase the salt tolerance of conventional crop plants. One especially promising halophyte is Suaeda salsa, a euhalophytic herb that occurs both on inland saline soils and in the intertidal zone. The species produces dimorphic seeds: black seeds are sensitive to salinity and remain dormant in light under high salt concentrations, while brown seeds can germinate under high salinity (e.g. 600 mm NaCl) regardless of light. Consequently, the species is useful for studying the mechanisms by which dimorphic seeds are adapted to saline environments. S. salsa has succulent leaves and is highly salt tolerant (e.g. its optimal NaCl concentration for growth is 200 mm). A series of S. salsa genes related to salt tolerance have been cloned and their functions tested: these include SsNHX1, SsHKT1, SsAPX, SsCAT1, SsP5CS and SsBADH. The species is economically important because its fresh branches have high value as a vegetable, and its seed oil is edible and rich in unsaturated fatty acids. Because it can remove salts and heavy metals from saline soils, S. salsa can also be used in the restoration of salinized or contaminated saline land.
Because of its economic and ecological value in saline agriculture, S. salsa is one of the most important halophytes in China. In this review, the value of S. salsa as a source of food, medicine and forage is discussed. Its uses in the restoration of salinized or contaminated land and as a source of salt-resistance genes are also considered.

Abstract
Utilizing a decomposition of anomalous eddy vorticity forcing (EVF) proposed by Song in 2016 and a modified Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) dynamical core atmospheric model, ...this study provides a different understanding of physical mechanisms that are responsible for the formation of the anomalous synoptic EVF (SEVF) associated with Pacific–North American teleconnection pattern (PNA) events. A series of short-term control experiments (CEs) and initial-value modified experiments (IVMEs) is conducted. In each case of CEs, there are no obvious PNA-like circulation anomalies. IVMEs are exactly the same as CEs except that appropriate small perturbations are introduced into the initial-value fields of CEs. The modified initial-value fields led to a gradual development of the PNA-like flow anomalies in IVMEs. Based on these numerical results, deformations of the synoptic eddy due to the emergence of the PNA pattern can be easily acquired by subtracting the synoptic eddy in CEs from the synoptic eddy in IVMEs . The anomalous SEVF associated with the PNA events in the model can be decomposed into ensembles of two linear and interaction terms (EVF1 and EVF2) and a nonlinear self-interaction term (EVF3). It is demonstrated that the physical essence of the anomalous SEVF associated with the PNA events is a competition result between EVF1 plus EVF2 and EVF3. Results also indicate that the different signs of SEVF associated with the positive and negative PNA events are not necessarily related to the different tilts of the synoptic eddy.

Functionalization of alkenes has been well investigated by chemists, thus it has been extensively applied in organic synthesis and industries. In the past few decades, transition‐metal, such as ...palladium, rhodium, gold, iridium, copper and iron, catalyzed functionalization reactions of alkenes have been significantly developed and played vital roles in synthesis. The difunctionalization of alkenes are appealing as an important alternative to the traditional approaches for the construction of useful carbon centers, particularly carbon quaternary centers, which commonly existed as structural motifs in numerous natural products, pharmaceuticals, and biologically active molecules. This account will summarize our recent advances in the intermolecular difunctionalization of alkenes, and also highlight the scope and limitations as well as the mechanisms of these difunctionalization reactions. In general, in this account the difunctionalization of alkenes starting from dicarbofunctionalization will be discussed. Then carboheterofunctionalization of alkenes will be intensively reviewed, and diheterofunctionalization will also be highlighted.
This personal account introduces the recent advances in difunctionalization of alkenes. These reactions are classified by the chemical bond formation, including C−C, C−N, C−O and other carbon‐heteroatom bond formation. This review highlights the scope and limitations, as well as the mechanisms of these functionalization reactions.

Suaeda salsa L. (S. salsa) is an annual euhalophyte with high salt tolerance and high value as an oil crop, traditional Chinese medicine and vegetable. However, there are few comprehensive studies on ...the metabolomics of S. salsa under saline conditions.
Seedlings of S. salsa were cultured with 0, 200 and 500 mM NaCl for two days. Then, widely targeted metabolites were detected with ultra performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry. A total of 639 metabolites were annotated. Among these, 253 metabolites were differential metabolites. Salt treatment increased the content of certain metabolites, such as nucleotide and its derivates, organic acids, the content of amino acids, lipids such as α-linolenic acid, and certain antioxidants such as quercetin. These substances may be correlated to osmotic tolerance, increased antioxidant activity, and medical and nutritional value in the species.
This study comprehensively analyzed the metabolic response of S. salsa under salinity from the perspective of omics, and provides an important theoretical basis for understanding salt tolerance and evaluating nutritional value in the species.

Recent realization of high sodium‐ion conductivities (>10−2 S cm−1) in inorganic solid electrolytes (ISEs) at room temperature will certainly trigger a boom in all‐solid‐state sodium batteries ...(ASS‐SBs). However, their electrochemical stable windows and compatibility to high capacity/voltage electrodes are unsatisfactory. Developing ideal ISEs that deliver high Na+ ion conductivities, good electrochemical/chemical stability, and compatible electrode/ISE interface is key for the success of high‐performance ASS‐SBs. In this review, focus is mainly on the fundamentals and strategies to optimize ASS‐SB performances from the aspects of ISE and interface, and note that interfacial issues are also ISE‐related. The latest progress in ISEs, including fundamentals of the sodium‐ion conduction mechanism, key parameters dominating the Na+ ion conduction in terms of crystal structure, lattice dynamics, point defects, and grain boundaries, and prototyping strategies for cell design, are elaborated from the perspectives of material and defect chemistry. The key challenges and future opportunities are discussed, and rational solutions are provided.
This review discusses the fundamentals of sodium ionic conduction in inorganic solid electrolytes (ISEs), identifies the key parameters dominating the sodium ionic conduction, and proposes prototyping strategies for both solid electrolyte and full cell design, from the perspectives of materials and defect chemistry. The key challenges and future opportunities for all‐solid‐state sodium batteries using ISEs are also discussed in detail.

Transition-metal-catalyzed alkene hydrosilylation is one of the most important homogeneous catalytic reactions, and the development of methods that use base metals, especially iron, as catalysts for ...this transformation is a growing area of research. However, the limited number of ligand scaffolds applicable for base-metal-catalyzed alkene hydrosilylation has seriously hindered advances in this area. Herein, we report the use of 1,10-phenanthroline ligands in base-metal catalysts for alkene hydrosilylation. In particular, iron catalysts with 2,9-diaryl-1,10-phenanthroline ligands exhibit unexpected reactivity and selectivity for hydrosilylation of alkenes, including unique benzylic selectivity with internal alkenes, Markovnikov selectivity with terminal styrenes and 1,3-dienes, and excellent activity toward aliphatic terminal alkenes. According to the mechanistic studies, the unusual benzylic selectivity of this hydrosilylation initiates from π-π interaction between the phenyl of the alkene and the phenanthroline of the ligand. This ligand scaffold and its unique catalytic model will open possibilities for base-metal-catalyzed hydrosilylation reactions.

With this general method, carbonylated ...benzofurans can be accessed through incorporation of two oxygen atoms into the product from O2 and TEMPO through dioxygen activation and oxidative cleavage of the NO bond, respectively.
Benzofurans are obtained by the tBuONO‐initiated radical 5‐exo‐dig cyclization of enynes under mild and metal‐free conditions. The two oxygen atoms that constitute the newly formed carbonyl groups of the benzofuran system originate from O2 and 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy (TEMPO), respectively.

Tremendous demands for renewable hydrogen generated from water splitting have stimulated intensive research on developing earth‐abundant, non‐noble, and versatile metal catalysts toward the hydrogen ...evolution reactions (HER). Here, self‐supported Cu‐Ni‐Al hybrid electrodes that are composed of electroactive Al7Cu4Ni@Cu4Ni core/shell nanocrystals seamlessly integrated in self‐supported 3D bimodal nanoporous Cu skeleton (Bi‐NP Cu/Al7Cu4Ni@Cu4Ni) as robust HER electrocatalysts in alkaline electrolyte are reported. As a result of the proper architecture, in which the Bi‐NP Cu skeleton not only facilitates both electron and electrolyte transports but also provides high specific surface areas to fully use high electrocatalytic activity of Al7Cu4Ni@Cu4Ni core/shell nanocrystals, the Bi‐NP Cu/Al7Cu4Ni@Cu4Ni hybrid catalysts exhibit a low onset overpotential of 60 mV and a small Tafel slope of 110 mV dec−1, enabling the catalytic current density of 10 mA cm−2 at a low overpotential of 139 mV. The highly stable electrochemical performance makes them promising candidates as cathode catalysts in alkaline‐based devices.
Self‐supported bimodal nanoporous Cu‐Ni‐Al catalytic electrodes are successfully developed as robust hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts in alkaline electrolyte. These hybrid electrodes that are composed of electroactive Al7Cu4Ni@Cu4Ni core/shell nanocrystals seamlessly integrated in a 3D bimodal nanoporous Cu skeleton (Bi‐NP Cu/Al7Cu4Ni@Cu4Ni) exhibit exceptional HER performance as a result of enhanced electrolyte accessibility and electron transport as well as HER catalytic activity.

The extensively developed ene‐type enantioselective cycloisomerization of classical 1,n‐enynes provides an efficient approach to chiral cyclic 1,4‐dienes. In contrast, the catalytic asymmetric ...heteroarenyne (heteroarene–alkyne) cycloisomerization involving the dearomative transformation of endocyclic aromatic C=C bonds remains unknown. Herein, we communicate a PdH‐catalyzed enantioselective heteroarenyne cycloisomerization reaction of alkyne‐tethered indole substrates (formal 1,5‐ and 1,6‐enynes). Based on this strategy, a variety of structurally diverse chiral spiro and fused indoline derivatives bearing quaternary stereocenters and exocyclic C=C bonds are afforded in moderate to excellent yields and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 98 % ee). The classical ene‐type enantioselective 1,5‐enyne cycloisomerization of N‐vinylpropiolamides is also developed to afford chiral 2‐pyrrolones in good to excellent ee values.
A palladium‐catalyzed enantioselective ene‐type cycloisomerization of heteroarenynes has been developed with alkyne‐tethered indoles as substrates. The reaction provides an efficient avenue for the synthesis of structurally diverse indolines bearing quaternary stereocenters in moderate to excellent yields and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 98 % ee).
