Photoperiod is considered an environmental factor that influences reproduction and the growth processes of fish throughout the year. In the present study, we subjected dusky grouper Epinephelus ...marginatus to different photoperiods in order to evaluate growth and survival. Juvenile dusky grouper were randomly distributed in twelve 100 L tanks containing four fish per aquarium. The fish were exposed to continuous light, normal photoperiod or continuous darkness for 50 days. Fish were fed 3% of their total biomass, twice a day, and the diet consisted of ground commercial dry pellets (42% crude protein, 12% humidity, 9% ether extract, 15% mineral matter, 4% crude fiber, 3.5% calcium and 3% vitamin C, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions). There was no mortality during the experiment. After 50 days, the best performance was found for exposure to continuous light (24 h artificial light). The final weight of the fish reared under continuous light was significantly higher than that of the fish exposed to continuous darkness. The specific growth rate of the fish exposed to continuous light was significantly higher than that of the fish exposed to the natural photoperiod and to continuous darkness. Modifications to the photoperiod can be a key factor in increasing the efficacy of current production and the improvement of current aquaculture protocols.
In this paper, we provide a retrospective cohort study with patients that have been hospitalized for general or intensive care unit admission due to COVID-19, between March 3 and July 29, 2020, in ...the state of Bahia, Brazil. We aim to correlate those patients' demographics, symptoms and comorbidities, with the risk of mortality from COVID-19, length of hospital stay, and time from diagnosis to definitive outcome. On the basis of a dataset provided by the Health Secretary of the State of Bahia, we selected 3,896 hospitalized patients from a total of 154,868 COVID-19 patients that included non-hospitalized patients and patients with invalid registration in the dataset. Then, we statistically analyzed whether there was a significant correlation between the patient record data and the COVID-19 pandemic, and our main findings reinforced by the use of a multivariable logistic regression were that older age (Odds Ratio OR = 1.03, 95% Confidence Interval CI = 1.03-1.04, p-value (p) <0.001), an initial symptom of shortness of breath (OR = 1.88, 95% CI = 1.60-2.20, p < 0.001), and the presence of comorbidities, mainly chronic kidney disease (OR = 2.41, 95% CI = 1.67-3.48, p < 0.001) are related to an increased risk of mortality from COVID-19. On the other hand, sore throat (OR = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.58-0.95, p = 0.02) and length of hospital stay (OR = 0.96, 95% CI = 0.58-0.95, p < 0.001) are more related to a reduced risk of mortality from COVID-19. Moreover, a multivariable linear regression conducted with statistically significant variables (p < 0.05) showed that age (OR = 0.97, 95% CI = 0.95-0.98, p < 0.001) and time from diagnosis to definitive outcome (OR = 1.67, 95% CI = 1.64-1.71, p < 0.001) are associated with the length of hospital stay.

Arsenic is an environmental toxicant known to be a carcinogen and endocrine disruptor. Maternal exposure to arsenic has been associated with fetus malformation and reproductive disorders in male ...offspring. However, it is unclear the extent to which those effects remain during postnatal development and adulthood. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the long‐term effects of prenatal arsenic exposure on reproductive parameters of male offspring at peripubertal and adult periods. Pregnant female Wistar rats were exposed to 0 or 10 mg/L sodium arsenite in drinking water from gestational day 1 (GD 1) until GD 21 and male pups were analyzed at postnatal day 44 (PND 44) and PND 70. We observed that some reproductive parameters were affected differently by arsenic exposure at each age evaluated. The body and reproductive organs weights, as well as testicular and epididymal morphology were strongly affected in peripubertal animals and recovered at adult period. On the other hand, the antioxidant genes expression (SOD1, SOD2, CAT and GSTK1) and the endogenous antioxidant system were affected in the testes and epididymides from both peripubertal and adult rats. Finally, an impairment in daily sperm production and in sperm parameters was observed in adult animals. Taken together, our findings show that prenatal arsenic exposure affected reproductive parameters of peripubertal and adult male rats mainly due to oxidative stress. Collectively, those alterations may be affecting fertility potential of adult animals.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a major infectious complication in hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients in countries with high TB prevalence. Identifying and treating latent tuberculosis ...infection (LTBI) helps to prevent TB reactivation after transplantation. Few studies have compared the tuberculin skin test (TST) with interferon Gamma release assays (IGRA) to diagnose LTBI in HSCT candidates. We compared TST and QuantiFeron TB gold in tube (QTF-GIT) and prospectively evaluated the incidence of active tuberculosis in 126 HSCT candidates and 58 HSCT recipients with chronic GVHD followed at the outpatient clinic. TB was diagnosed by culture in Mycobacteria media and by commercial real-time PCR kit. Considering the positivity of any test, the prevalence of LTBI was 8.7% in HSCT candidates (11 out of 126) and 12.5% in HSCT recipients with chronic GVHD (6 out of 48). QTF-GIT indeterminate results were detected in 2.4% of the HSCT candidates. Fair to good agreement (K > 0.50) between tests was observed in both cohorts. Cumulative incidence of TB was 3% in the GVHD cohort. TB was diagnosed in 2 chronic GVHD recipients, both cases confirmed by positive culture and PCR. None of the 11 patients with LTBI diagnosed pre-HSCT who received INH prophylaxis developed TB.

The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of the hydroalcoholic extract of the root of tetraploid P. glomerata (BGEt) on testicular parenchyma, and its implications on fertility.
Adult Swiss mice were divided as: control (water) and sildenafil citrate (7 mg/kg), BGEt at 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg, and BGEtD 200 mg/kg (treated with BGE every three days). Males (n = 4/group) were mated with normal untreated adult females to assess fertility rates, while other animals (n = 6/group) were euthanized for testis, epididymis, and oxidative stress analyses.
Increase in tubule diameter and epithelium height in the discontinuous group, in addition to an increase in the proportion of tubules with moderate pathologies was observed. The pre-implantation loss was lower in all treated groups. The post-implantation loss was significantly increased in all treated groups, except for the lowest BGEt dose. BGEt intake caused a decrease in daily sperm production, along with the number and quality of sperm in the epididymis. Changes were observed in protein carbonylation and hydrogen peroxide and nitric oxide levels, characterizing oxidative stress.
The hydroalcoholic extract of P. glomerata tetraploid altered sperm and testicular parameters, compromising embryonic development after implantation.

Background
Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection is highly prevalent in developing countries. In countries experiencing a shift from intermediate/high endemicity to low endemicity, the World Health ...Organization recommends the incorporation of HAV vaccine into the national vaccination calendar for children aged ≥1 year. Since HAV antibodies wane over time, most HSCT revaccination guidelines advise vaccination as optional, following the country recommendation. However, no study has evaluated the serological response to HAV vaccine in allogeneic HSCT recipients.
Methods
We conducted a prospective study in 46 HSCT recipients who received two doses of inactivated HAV vaccine. Blood samples were taken before vaccination to determine HAV prevalence rates, and before and 4‐6 weeks after the second dose. Specific anti‐HAV antibodies were detected by a competitive commercial enzyme immune assay.
Results
Patients received the first dose of vaccine at a median of 332.5 (120‐4134) days after HSCT. Median absolute lymphocyte count at vaccination was 1947 (696‐12 500)/mm3. The seroprevalence rate was 93.5% at inclusion. Although safe and well tolerated, the serological response to HAV vaccine in susceptible patients was poor (33%), and no boost effect was observed in seropositive patients.
Conclusions
In areas with intermediate/high seroprevalence of HAV, serology should be recommended prior to referral to vaccination. The mechanisms of antibody interference and how to overcome T‐cell function deficiency need to be better understood in transplant populations receiving HAV vaccine. Alternative schedules of HAV vaccination should be evaluated in prospective trials.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is an important therapeutic option for some hematological diseases. However, patients who undergo HSCT acquire a state of immunodeficiency that causes ...significant mortality. Reconstitution of thymic function is needed to support the immune system. One way to measure thymic function is through T-cell receptor excision circle (TREC) quantification. TRECs are generated by T-cell receptor gene rearrangements during T-cell maturation in the thymus and represent a reliable marker for thymic output. In this study, we aimed to assess aging and malignant hematological diseases as two important factors that may influence thymic output before HSCT. We observed that patients before HSCT presented signal joint TREC (sjTREC) numbers lower than 606.55 copies/μg DNA (low values) compared with healthy individuals, with an odds ratio (OR) of 12.88 95% confidence interval (CI): 5.26-31.53;
< 0.001. Our results showed that a group of older individuals (≥50 years old), comprising both healthy individuals and patients, had an OR of 10.07 (95% CI: 2.80-36.20) for low sjTREC values compared with younger individuals (≤24 years old;
< 0.001). Multiple logistic regression analysis confirmed that both older age (≥50 years old) and malignant hematological diseases and their treatments were important and independent risk factors related to thymic function impairment (
< 0.001). The median sjTREC value for patients of all ages was significantly lower than the sjTREC median for the subgroup of older healthy individuals (≥50 years old;
< 0.001). These data suggested that patients before HSCT and healthy individuals exhibited age-dependent thymic impairment, and that prior treatment for hematological diseases may exacerbate aging-related deterioration of natural thymic function. Furthermore, we analyzed these patients 9 months post-HSCT and compared patients who underwent autologous HSCT with those who underwent allogeneic HSCT. Both groups of patients achieved sjTREC copy numbers similar to those of healthy individuals. We did not find a close relationship between impaired thymic function prior to HSCT and worse thymic recovery after HSCT.
Flavonoids are one of the most important and diversified phenolic groups among products of natural origin. An important property of this metabolite class is the antioxidant action. This study ...evaluated the antioxidant and cytotoxic activities and oxidative stress of transesterification products of the flavonoid rutin, catalyzed by Novozym® 435. The presence of monoacetate and diacetate was confirmed by quantitative evaluation of the retention times (rutin, 15.68 min; rutin monoacetate, 18.14 min; and rutin diacetate, 18.57 min) and by the data from LC-MS and NMR 1H and 13C. The experiment showed excellent conversion values of 96% in total acetates (rutin monoacetate and diacetate). These results confirmed that rutin derivatives have antioxidant potential, as evaluated by the ORAC method (rutin standard: 0.53 ± 0.08 μM Trolox/g and rutin derivatives: 2.33 ± 1.08 μM Trolox/g) and also show low cytotoxicity in human and animal cells. Rutin derivatives reduced the production of reactive oxygen species in RAW macrophages as well. Many qualities attributed to rutin derivatives make them promising potential candidates for use as nutraceuticals, including their high amounts of antioxidants, biological potential and low toxicity, which contribute to the reduction of oxidative stress.
