Polarized antiprotons can be produced in a storage ring by spin-dependent interaction in a purely electron-polarized hydrogen gas target. The polarizing process is based on spin transfer from the ...polarized electrons of the target atoms to the orbiting antiprotons. After spin filtering for about two beam lifetimes at energies T approximately equal 40-170 MeV using a dedicated large acceptance ring, the antiproton beam polarization would reach P=0.2-0.4. Polarized antiprotons would open new and unique research opportunities for spin-physics experiments in p(-) p interactions.

Non‐human primate species are threatened worldwide. Their population declines go along with the loss of ecological functions such as seed dispersal that plays a crucial role in plant regeneration. ...Restoring essential habitat structures could thus not only protect primates, but also facilitate forest regeneration. We used classical vegetation description on the ground and a remote sensing analysis to describe habitat use of crowned lemurs (Eulemur coronatus), a seed‐dispersing primate endemic to northern Madagascar. Our aim was to find vegetation characteristics important for lemurs that might be targeted in a restoration approach. For this, we applied both methods in differently degraded forest types. Both classical vegetation description and remote sensing analysis were able to distinguish these forest types. The habitat use of our two study groups was associated consistently with vegetation structures measured on a small scale such as tree height and density of thick trees. In contrast, vegetation productivity and water content derived from satellite imagery on a larger scale could not consistently explain habitat use of lemurs. Thus, measurements on the ground can identify suitable microhabitats that do not show on the satellite imagery scale. These microhabitats might be very important conservation elements to create buffer zones and corridors. Further, they might attract seed‐dispersing species into degraded areas targeted for forest restoration, acting as natural regeneration nuclei. The potential of these microhabitats for conservation would not be recognized when analyses were based solely on landscape analyses on large scales.

A low-energy spin-physics program is being developed at the COSY storage ring. To support the planned experimental activities, several experimental tools for polarized beams and targets have been ...developed. The paper presents the physics case and the readiness of the setup for its realization.
¹H NMR spectroscopy of sera from HIV-1 infected and uninfected individuals was performed on 300 and 600 MHz instruments. The resultant spectra were automatically data reduced to 90 and 180 integral ...segments of equal length. Analysis of variance identified significant differences between the sample groups, especially for the samples analyzed on 600 MHz and reduced to fewer segments. Linear discriminant analysis correctly classified 100% of the samples analyzed on the 300 MHz NMR (reduced to 180 segments); an increase in instrument sensitivity resulted in lower percentages of correctly classified samples. Multinomial logistic regression (MLR) resulted in 100% correct classification of all samples from both instruments. Thus ¹H-NMR metabonomics on either instrument distinguishes HIV-positive individuals using or not using anti retroviral therapy, but the sensitivity of the instrument impacts on data reduction. Furthermore, MLR is a novel multivariate statistical technique for improved classification of biological data analyzed in NMR.

The beam heat load and the pressure in the vacuum chamber of the cold bore superconducting undulator installed at ANKA (ANgstrom source KArlsruhe) have been monitored for almost two years. Possible ...sources of the observed heat load could be synchrotron radiation from upstream magnets, image currents, electron and ion bombardment. In this paper, the various possible contributions to the heat load are discussed and compared with experimental results. The dynamic pressure increases nonlinearly with the average beam current. The current where it assumes a maximum varies both with the bunch intensity and with the initial vacuum pressure. A correlation between the heat load and the dynamic pressure has been observed. This study suggests that electron bombardment could explain the beam heat load and pressure rise observed for a bunch length of 10 mm.

Nature and species conservation often conflict with intensive natural resource or land use. Many protected areas are too small for long-term conservation of viable vertebrate populations, especially ...in Madagascar, and forests are subject to exploitation for a variety of natural resources. Trying to exclude people from the use of these resources has not been successful during economic, natural, or political crises or when human population growth outruns any development effort. People need economic and other benefits, and conservation measures have to account for these needs. We compiled native and introduced tree, shrub, and herbaceous species used by both people and native vertebrates for three regions, covering the domains of the dry, transitional, and humid forest of Madagascar. We carried out semistructured interviews and group discussions in 12 different villages in each study region in November 2017. People listed 139 utilitarian plant taxa. Our literature search revealed that 72 of these plant species and 13 genera used by people, were also used by 208 different terrestrial vertebrates including 58 lemur species. Application of the Forest Landscape Restoration approach with a combination of exotic and native plant species used by both people and animals could increase the economic value of restored forest habitats for people, thus providing incentives for forest conservation. Plantations of mixed utilitarian trees and shrubs could be integrated into agricultural landscapes. Among land-living vertebrates, lemurs seem to benefit most from this approach. These measures might contribute to a successful array of biodiversity conservation in anthropogenic landscapes.

The relationship between genetic variation in CYP2D6 and variable drug response represents a potentially powerful pharmacogenetic tool. However, little is known regarding this relationship in the ...genetically diverse South African population. The aim was therefore to evaluate the relationship between predicted and measured CYP2D6 phenotype. An XL-PCR+Sequencing approach was used to determine CYP2D6 genotype in 100 healthy volunteers and phenotype was predicted using activity scores. With dextromethorphan as the probe drug, metabolic ratios served as a surrogate measure of in vivo CYP2D6 activity. Three-hour plasma metabolic ratios of dextrorphan/dextromethorphan were measured simultaneously using semi-automated online solid phase extraction coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Partial adaptation of the activity score system demonstrated a strong association between genotype and phenotype, as illustrated by a kappa value of 0.792, inter-rater discrepancy of 0.051 and sensitivity of 72.7%. Predicted phenotype frequencies using the modified activity score were 1.3% for poor metabolisers (PM), 7.6% for intermediate metabolisers (IM) and 87.3% for extensive metabolisers (EM). Measured phenotype frequencies were 1.3% for PM, 13.9% for IM and 84.8% for EM. Comprehensive CYP2D6 genotyping reliably predicts CYP2D6 activity in this South African cohort and can be utilised as a valuable pharmacogenetic tool.

Accurate magnetic field measurements are a prerequisite for the characterization and optimization of undulators. At the synchrotron light source ANKA there is an ongoing R&D program for ...superconducting insertion devices. Within this program a test stand for precise magnetic field measurements of superconductive coils was designed, built and installed at the Research Center Karlsruhe. Comprehensive magnetic measurements are performed to confirm the magnet design and to detect or correct field imperfections resulting from the manufacturing process. The magnetic field is measured along a fixed direction by Hall probes with a positioning precision of 3 mum. A NbTi undulator prototype with local correction coils was built to verify the performance of the superconductor and the shimming concept. In this contribution we describe the measuring test station and preliminary tests results including the efficiency of the shimming concept.
