The HERMES atomic beam source is used to provide nuclear polarized hydrogen or deuterium atoms for the HERMES target. The setup including the dissociator, the sextupole magnet system and the ...high-frequency transitions is described. Measurements of the hydrogen intensity of up to
6.4×10
16
atoms/
s
in two hyperfine substates and of the deuterium intensity of up to
5.8×10
16
atoms/
s
in three hyperfine substates are presented. A degree of dissociation of 92.8% for H (94.5% for D) at the entrance of the storage cell and a nuclear polarization of around 0.97 (H) and 0.92 (D) have been found constant within a couple of percent over the whole running period of the HERMES experiment.

Accurate magnetic field measurements are a prerequisite for the characterization and optimization of undulators. At the synchrotron light source ANKA there is an ongoing R&D program for ...superconducting insertion devices. Within this program a test stand for precise magnetic field measurements of superconductive coils was designed, built and installed at the Research Center Karlsruhe. Comprehensive magnetic measurements are performed to confirm the magnet design and to detect or correct field imperfections resulting from the manufacturing process. The magnetic field is measured along a fixed direction by Hall probes with a positioning precision of 3 mum. A NbTi undulator prototype with local correction coils was built to verify the performance of the superconductor and the shimming concept. In this contribution we describe the measuring test station and preliminary tests results including the efficiency of the shimming concept.
Superconducting undulators generate, for a given period length and a given gap, higher fields than permanent magnet undulators. Since in an undulator the photons add up coherently over the whole ...undulator length, even small magnetic field errors can disturb the superposition of photons and reduce the intensity of the generated photon beam. Therefore, as in any other undulator, the magnetic field has to be measured with high accuracy.
To align predicted and measured CYP2C19 phenotype in a South African cohort.
Genotyping of CYP2C19*2, *3, *9, *15, *17, *27 and *28 was performed using PCR-RFLP, and an activity score (AS) system was ...used to predict phenotype. True phenotype was measured using plasma concentrations of omeprazole and its metabolite 5'-hydroxyomperazole.
Partial genotype-phenotype discrepancies were reported, and an adapted AS system was developed, which showed a marked improvement in phenotype prediction. Results highlight the need for a more comprehensive CYP2C19 genotyping approach to improve prediction of omeprazole metabolism.
Evidence for the utility of a CYP2C19 AS system is provided, for which the accuracy can be further improved by means of comprehensive genotyping and substrate-specific modification.
Primate populations are declining the world over due to anthropogenic threats, including habitat loss and degradation. This raises the important question of how much habitat degradation a species can ...cope with. Habitat degradation is pronounced in Madagascar, where most of the human population depends on the direct exploitation of natural resources. We aimed to identify the response of
Microcebus griseorufus
(the gray-brown mouse lemur) to forest degradation and to define the structural traits of the vegetation that might be crucial for the species’ occurrence in anthropogenic landscapes. We documented the occurrence of
Microcebus griseorufus
in relation to vegetation structures along a gradient of forest degradation, at the edge of and west of Tsimanampetsotsa National Park in April and May 2007 and from October to December 2015. We confirmed the occurrence of
Microcebus griseorufus
using trapping and visual surveys, and measured vegetation structure. Logistic regression models showed that
Microcebus griseorufus
has a threshold response to tree density and the diameter of thick trees. The thresholds of occurrence were at 10–15% of the tree density recorded in intact forest and a mean diameter of trees with a diameter at breast height of >10 cm of 14.3 cm. The definition of such thresholds might help to maintain suitable habitat for this species and other primates living in anthropogenic landscapes, providing connectivity between isolated protected areas and allowing dispersal between populations.

Superconducting undulators and wigglers are developed for synchrotron light sources, damping rings for linear colliders and polarized positron sources. In an undulator the emitted photons along the ...trajectory have to interfere. In order to do so the magnetic field in all periods has to be almost identical. The field strength over one or several hundred periods is not allowed to deviate by more than 1%. Translated into mechanical accuracy the position of the wire and the poles has to be more accurate than about 5 over 1 to 2 m. High quality measurement of the field is an essential requirement. In this paper we present two field measuring systems, one is under construction and another one is under design phase at the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe.
For a given gap and a given period length superconductive cold-bore undulators have a higher field strength compared to permanent magnet undulators. The measurement of the field and the field quality ...in the cold bore is demanding since the position of the Hall-probes have to be precise within a few microns over a distance of one to two meters. At the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe two measuring facilities are under construction which allow to measure short mock-ups and undulators with a length of up to two meters. In this paper the two devices called CASPER (ChAracterization Setup for Phase Error Reduction) are described.
Metabonomics, the study of metabolites and their role in various physiological states, is a novel methodology arising from the post-genomics era and has extensive biomedical application. This ...technology has exhibited vast success in the identification and study of human diseases and may find further application in the study of HIV/AIDS. Specifically, the wide range of clinical and metabolic abnormalities associated with the use of antiretroviral (ARV) treatment may be investigated. To this end, this preliminary study evaluated whether metabonomic techniques could distinguish between HIV-1 positive/AIDS patients utilizing antiretroviral therapy and HIV-1 negative individuals. Serum metabolic profiles determined by H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy combined with pattern recognition analysis of the data showed that this distinction was attainable; suggesting that ARV-associated side-effects could be monitored utilizing NMR metabonomic techniques.
