This article presents a novel method to retrieve spectral widths from measurements of spaceborne Doppler profiling radars (SDPRs) operating in low-Earth orbit. The proposed Explicit Sy-Tanelli ...(ExpliSyT) approach is based on a formulation of the Doppler broadening in terms of the distributions of reflectivity and velocity in the footprint. This formulation makes it possible to estimate the broadening and remove it from the spectral-width measurement. Two implementations of the ExpliSyT correction are described: 1) a numerical implementation that uses Wiener's deconvolution and 2) an analytical implementation based on Taylor expansions of the radar observations. The ExpliSyT corrections enable retrievals of higher-order Doppler information, such as posterior power spectra. Results are shown for simulations of the radar of the Earth Cloud Aerosol Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE developed by the European and Japanese space agencies) and a Displaced Phase Center Antenna (DPCA) configuration, for which the ExpliSyT corrections perform significantly better. A novel canonical Doppler resampling diagram is introduced to explain the correlation between nonuniform beamfilling (NUBF) and spectral broadening. This tool shows that: 1) the NUBF of reflectivity modulates the spacecraft-induced spectral broadening and 2) the NUBF of velocity can either broaden or shrink the Doppler spectrum. This spectral shrinkage, although important, is not typically thought of when dealing with spaceborne Doppler radars. The ability to estimate spectral widths accurately from space paves the way for future microphysical and dynamical characterizations of hydrometeors in shear or turbulence.
This article presents a new method to retrieve dynamic information from spaceborne Doppler radar observations. The method is based on a complex convolution Doppler resampling (CConDoR) formulation, ...which links the spaceborne pulse-pair (PP) correlation measurements to high-resolution PP products that are not affected by the spacecraft motion. The CConDoR formalism allows to easily simulate Doppler products via convolution products. The CConDoR representation enables also retrievals by deconvolution. This approach is illustrated using a Wiener deconvolution algorithm. Results are shown for simulations of the radar of the Earth Cloud Aerosol Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE; developed by the European and Japanese space agencies). The proposed corrections improve the accuracy of the measured mean velocities (by correcting for nonuniform beam-filling (NUBF) biases) and spectral widths (by correcting for the spectral broadening), which to the best of the authors' knowledge is novel.
Southern Africa produces almost a third of the Earth’s biomass burning (BB) aerosol particles, yet the fate of these particles and their influence on regional and global climate is poorly understood. ...ORACLES (ObseRvations of Aerosols above CLouds and their intEractionS) is a 5-year NASA EVS-2 (Earth Venture Suborbital-2) investigation with three intensive observation periods designed to study key atmospheric processes that determine the climate impacts
of these aerosols. During the Southern Hemisphere winter and spring (June–October), aerosol particles reaching 3–5 km in altitude are transported westward over the southeast Atlantic, where they interact with one of the largest subtropical stratocumulus (Sc) cloud decks in the world. The representation of these interactions in climate models remains highly uncertain in part due to a scarcity of observational constraints on aerosol and cloud properties, as well
as due to the parameterized treatment of physical processes. Three ORACLES deployments by the NASA P-3 aircraft in September 2016, August 2017, and October 2018 (totaling ~ 350 science flight hours), augmented by the deployment of the NASA ER-2 aircraft for remote sensing in September 2016 (totaling ~ 100 science flight hours), were intended to help fill this observational gap. ORACLES focuses on three fundamental science themes centered on the climate effects of African BB aerosols: (a) direct aerosol radiative effects, (b) effects of aerosol absorption on atmospheric circulation and clouds, and (c) aerosol–cloud microphysical interactions. This paper summarizes the ORACLES science objectives, describes the project implementation, provides an overview of the flights and measurements in each deployment, and highlights the integrative modeling efforts from cloud to global scales to address science objectives. Significant new findings on the vertical structure of BB aerosol physical and chemical properties, chemical aging, cloud condensation nuclei, rain and precipitation statistics, and aerosol indirect effects are emphasized, but their detailed descriptions are the subject of separate publications. The main purpose of this paper is to familiarize the broader scientific community with the ORACLES project and the dataset it produced.
Pulse compression has enabled a new generation of low-cost and compact spaceborne weather radar systems. To successfully utilize pulse compression techniques for cloud and precipitation applications, ...the effects of Doppler-range migration must be considered during the design and operation of the radar. Pulse compression for spaceborne weather applications introduces additional interdependence between the radar system and the operations when compared with traditional pulsed radar systems, primarily as a result of the large platform velocities. Pulse compression signals for weather radar can be simulated with high fidelity to predict and optimize the radar's performance. In this article, we evaluate the pulse compression performance of RainCube, a Ka-band precipitation radar in a CubeSat, through analysis and comparison of observations and radar simulations. Through these comparisons, design and operational considerations for pulse compression weather radar are discussed. This work shows that the optimal pointing angle for RainCube to achieve the finest vertical resolution is not at nadir, but when pointing forward approximately 2.25°, in the direction of the spacecraft's orbit.
Scattering models of precipitation‐size ice particles have shown that aggregates and spheroidal particles occupy distinct regions of the Ku‐Ka‐W‐band dual‐frequency ratio (DFR) plane. Furthermore, ...past ground‐based observations suggest that particle bulk density and characteristic size can be retrieved from the DFR plane. This study, for the first time, evaluates airborne DFR observations with coincident airborne microphysical measurements. Over 2 hr of microphysical data collected aboard the University of North Dakota Citation from the Olympic Mountains Experiment are matched with Airborne Precipitation and cloud Radar Third Generation triple‐frequency radar observations. Across all flights, 31% (63%) of collocated data points show nonspheroidal (spheroidal) particle scattering characteristics. DFR observations compared with in situ observations of effective density and particle characteristic size reveal relationships that could potentially be used to develop quantitative dual‐ and triple‐frequency DFR ice property retrievals.

Currently, remote sensing retrievals of ice clouds require assumptions since particle shape and size vary greatly in the atmosphere. Additionally, particle shape and size constrain relationships of mass and fall velocity of ice within a cloud, which affect remote sensing retrievals. Modeling studies have shown that the scattering characteristics of complex ice particles (e.g., aggregates) have a distinct signature compared to spherical representations of the same particles when using three frequencies under the following conditions: (1) at least one radar with its wavelength close to the size of the particle and (2) particles have low effective densities. Thus, there is potential to retrieve information about particle shape using triple‐frequency radar observations to constrain the assumptions of particle shape in the ice cloud retrieval. This paper is the first study to use airborne triple‐frequency radar observations coincident with airborne in situ microphysical measurements to evaluate both the scattering signal discussed and retrievals of characteristic size and effective density. We found that 31% (63%) of the observations from the Olympic Mountains Experiment show nonspheroidal (spheroidal) scattering characteristics. Furthermore, the triple‐frequency observations confirm the relationships with observed particle size and effective density outlined in a previous study supporting future use of triple‐frequency missions.

Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) plus amodiaquine (AQ), given each month during the transmission season, is recommended for children living in areas of the ...Sahel where malaria transmission is highly seasonal. The recommendation for SMC is currently limited to children under five years of age, but, in many areas of seasonal transmission, the burden in older children may justify extending this age limit. This study was done to determine the effectiveness of SMC in Senegalese children up to ten years of age.
SMC was introduced into three districts over three years in central Senegal using a stepped-wedge cluster-randomised design. A census of the population was undertaken and a surveillance system was established to record all deaths and to record all cases of malaria seen at health facilities. A pharmacovigilance system was put in place to detect adverse drug reactions. Fifty-four health posts were randomised. Nine started implementation of SMC in 2008, 18 in 2009, and a further 18 in 2010, with 9 remaining as controls. In the first year of implementation, SMC was delivered to children aged 3-59 months; the age range was then extended for the latter two years of the study to include children up to 10 years of age. Cluster sample surveys at the end of each transmission season were done to measure coverage of SMC and the prevalence of parasitaemia and anaemia, to monitor molecular markers of drug resistance, and to measure insecticide-treated net (ITN) use. Entomological monitoring and assessment of costs of delivery in each health post and of community attitudes to SMC were also undertaken. About 780,000 treatments were administered over three years. Coverage exceeded 80% each month. Mortality, the primary endpoint, was similar in SMC and control areas (4.6 and 4.5 per 1000 respectively in children under 5 years and 1.3 and 1.2 per 1000 in children 5-9 years of age; the overall mortality rate ratio SMC: no SMC was 0.90, 95% CI 0.68-1.2, p = 0.496). A reduction of 60% (95% CI 54%-64%, p < 0.001) in the incidence of malaria cases confirmed by a rapid diagnostic test (RDT) and a reduction of 69% (95% CI 65%-72%, p < 0.001) in the number of treatments for malaria (confirmed and unconfirmed) was observed in children. In areas where SMC was implemented, incidence of confirmed malaria in adults and in children too old to receive SMC was reduced by 26% (95% CI 18%-33%, p < 0.001) and the total number of treatments for malaria (confirmed and unconfirmed) in these older age groups was reduced by 29% (95% CI 21%-35%, p < 0.001). One hundred and twenty-three children were admitted to hospital with a diagnosis of severe malaria, with 64 in control areas and 59 in SMC areas, showing a reduction in the incidence rate of severe disease of 45% (95% CI 5%-68%, p = 0.031). Estimates of the reduction in the prevalence of parasitaemia at the end of the transmission season in SMC areas were 68% (95% CI 35%-85%) p = 0.002 in 2008, 84% (95% CI 58%-94%, p < 0.001) in 2009, and 30% (95% CI -130%-79%, p = 0.56) in 2010. SMC was well tolerated with no serious adverse reactions attributable to SMC drugs. Vomiting was the most commonly reported mild adverse event but was reported in less than 1% of treatments. The average cost of delivery was US$0.50 per child per month, but varied widely depending on the size of the health post. Limitations included the low rate of mortality, which limited our ability to detect an effect on this endpoint.
SMC substantially reduced the incidence of outpatient cases of malaria and of severe malaria in children, but no difference in all-cause mortality was observed. Introduction of SMC was associated with an overall reduction in malaria incidence in untreated age groups. In many areas of Africa with seasonal malaria, there is a substantial burden in older children that could be prevented by SMC. SMC in older children is well tolerated and effective and can contribute to reducing malaria transmission.

Previous work has shown that the relatively large resolution volume of spaceborne precipitation radars can affect precipitation measurements in several ways. During the Olympic Mountains Experiment ...(OLYMPEX), Ku- and Ka-band airborne radar measurements of precipitation were obtained during two Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) overpasses, one case over land and one case over ocean. The authors compare the GPM-measured radar quantities with the same quantities inferred from the higher spatial resolution airborne radar data. Differences include smaller maximum reflectivity and path attenuation and more significant surface clutter in mountainous areas for GPM.
During the Observations of Aerosols above Clouds and Their Interactions (ORACLES) 2016 and 2017 field experiments, the Third Generation Advanced Precipitation and Cloud Radar (APR-3) flew aboard the ...NASA P-3 aircraft taking over 10 million profiles of stratocumulus clouds in the southeast Atlantic Ocean. This study documents cloud structure, precipitation frequency and intensity, and atmospheric stability for each flight during both field experiments. A larger cloud fraction was estimated for 2016, likely due to a larger estimated inversion strength (EIS) in the experiment area (between 6 and 10 K) compared to 2017 where EIS was on average 4–6 K lower. We used an optimal estimation retrieval to derive precipitation rates for all measurable clouds during both experiments. Over 30% of clouds observed during the 2016 experiment exhibited precipitation reaching the surface, but retrieved drizzle rates were below 0.01 mm h−1 in all but 40% of these profiles. This is in sharp contrast to the 2017 campaign where over 53% of precipitating profiles had rainfall rates larger than 0.01 mm h−1. The differences in cloud and rain fractions between the two years are most likely due to differences in the sampling environments; however, enough variations in cloud, virga, and rain fraction exist for similar environmental conditions such that additional analysis of cloud and aerosol interactions—specifically their effect on precipitation processes—needs further exploration. The extensive APR-3 sampling of drizzling stratocumulus under similar thermodynamic conditions provides a rich dataset for examining the influence of biomass burning aerosols on cloud fraction, morphology, and precipitation characteristics in this climatically important region.

This is the third of three articles that quantify the high added value of frequent satellite microwave observations of the atmosphere (with a "refresh" time on the order of 1 min) to capture the ...dynamics of weather systems. Recent advances in small-satellite and microwave miniaturization, such as the "Temporal Experiment for Storms and Tropical systems" (TempEST) millimeter-wave radiometer developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, are paving the way for the design of convoys of spaceborne radars that can directly observe the evolution of severe weather at very fine temporal scales. The analyses presented here are to establish the relation between passive microwave observations and their change in time and the underlying cloud variables and processes and to evaluate the sensitivity to the different physical and instrument parameters. In this third part, simulations are used to demonstrate and quantify the direct sensitivity of a time sequence of mm-wave radiances to the vertical structure of the vertical updrafts in convective storms. It is demonstrated that the brightness temperatures from a pair of low-Earth-orbit (LEO) radiometers maintaining a separation of 1 or 2 min can indeed be used to retrieve the column-maximum magnitude of the vertical wind as well as the height of the maximum. While such passive retrievals do not provide the vertical detail that a pair of radars would produce, the radiometers have a vast swath and therefore enable the observation of an entire storm. The application is therefore quite different from the case of a convoy of radars: rather than compiling radar statistics over multiple years, the radiometer-convoy measurements can be used to analyze every storm that is observed.

= 540, grades 7 and 8) was conducted over 2 years (four measurement points) with a perceptual construct questionnaire and access to students’ report cards. The changes in ...interest, self-concept, and the intention to pursue studies and a career in science and technology were explored as well as the reciprocal causal links between them, while also integrating four exogenous variables: achievement, perceived easiness, gender, and pedagogical novelty. Structural equation modeling was used with the partial least squares (PLS) regression technique. The findings indicate that interest and self-concept do not appear to be mutually dependent and that interest mostly depends on pedagogical novelty, perceived easiness, and the intention to pursue while self-concept depends on achievement and perceived easiness. Easiness was identified as a potentially strong predictor of most constructs about the students’ relationship with the topic and even of the intention to pursue.
