Up to this point several publications have appeared dealing with the agronomic value of the doubled haploid lines, their behaviour in hybrid combinations, and their ability to improve the agronomic value of their progenies.
Eleven rabbits were given bovine serum albumin i.v., in daily doses of 25 mg. Renal biopsy was performed on the 30th, 60th and 100th day of treatment and the specimens were subjected to light-, ...electron-microscopic and immunofluorescent studies, so as to follow up the dynamics of the glomerular process. Proteinuria and the serum creatinine and BUN levels were also measured. By the 100th day of treatment mesangioproliferative glomerulopathy had developed in 7, membranoproliferative glomerulopathy in 3 cases and membraneous glomerulopathy in 1 case. On the 30th day of treatment exudative glomerulopathy was demonstrable in the majority of the cases (in 9 animals). It is suggested that the earliest stage of the various glomerulopathies, regardless of their type, is marked by exudative lesions. The heaviest proteinuria was found in membraneous and membranoproliferative glomerulopathies. Changes in the serum creatinine and BUN levels indicative of a deteriorating renal function were noted in the membranoproliferative cases. The results are correlated with clinical observations of human glomerulopathies.

The physiological effects of fluid by-product were examined. Maize seedlings were used in the experiments. The effect of the examined material depends on the concentration of applied by-product. Dry ...matter accumulation of shoots and roots of maize, relative chlorophyll contents of second and third leaves and the contents of elements were measured of the plants. By the examination of several physiological parameters we came to the conclusion that the fluid by-products of biogas factory can be suitable material to replace the industrial chemicals, especially in bio-production.

Here we consider a different approach to using coupled ...quantum-dot cells in an architecture which, rather than reproducing Boolean logic, uses a physical near-neighbor connectivity to construct an analog cellular neural network.

Aims: An all-sky survey of loop- and arc-like intensity enhancements has been
performed in order to investigate the large-scale structure of the diffuse
far-infrared emission. Methods: We used maps ...made of 60 and 100 micrometer
processed IRAS data (Sky Survey Atlas and dust infrared emission maps) to
identify large-scale structures: loops, arcs or cavities, in the far-infrared
emission in the Galaxy. Distances were attributed to a subsample of loops using
associated objects. Results: We identified 462 far-infrared loops, analyzed
their individual FIR properties and their distribution. This data forms the
Catalogue of Far-Infrared Loops in the Galaxy. We obtained observational
estimates of f_in~30% and f_out~5% for the hot gas volume filling factor of the
inward and outward Galactic neighbourhood of the Solar System. We obtained a
slope of the power law size luminosity function {beta}=1.37 for low Galactic
latitudes in the outer Milky Way. Conclusions: Deviations in the celestial
distribution of far-infrared loops clearly indicate, that violent events
frequently overwrite the structure of the interstellar matter in the inner
Galaxy. Our objects trace out the spiral arm structure of the Galaxy in the
neighbourhood of the Sun and their distribution clearly suggests that there is
an efficient process that can generate loop-like features at high Galactic
latitudes. Power law indices of size luminosity distributions suggest, that the
structure of the ISM is ruled by supernovae and stellar winds at low Galactic
latitudes while it is governed by supersonic turbulence above the Galactic
plane.

Chronic ethanol intoxication in rats accelerated the rate of ethanol metabolism, but decreased the activity of alcohol dehydrogenase. Chronic consumption of ethanol decreased the activities of ...cytochrome oxidase and succinic dehydrogenase in mitochondria and in cell-free homogenates, whereas total hepatic mitochondrial protein was not altered by ethanol feeding. Thus, total “mitochondrial activity” was decreased and cannot account for the increased rate of blood ethanol elearance. We therefore investigated the activities of mitochondrial enzymes and those of “shuttle” systems for the transport of reducing equivalents into mitochondria.
Reconstituted malate-aspartate, fatty acid, and α-glycerophosphate shuttles were equally effective in transporting reducing equivalents into the mitochondria from ethanol-fed and control rats. The activities of enzymes involved in the shuttles, such as cytoplasmic and mitochondrial α-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase and glutamic oxalacetic transaminase, were either decreased or unchanged by chronic ethanol consumption. The permeability of the mitochondria to NADH and to substrate anions which participate in the shuttles was also not altered by ethanol feeding. It is therefore unlikely that the increased rates of ethanol oxidation produced by chronic ethanol consumption are caused by enhanced transport of reducing equivalents into the mitochondria.
A high fat diet alone (35% of total calories) increased both the endogenous and total rates of shuttle activity, compared with the rates obtained with mitochondria from rats which had consumed a low fat diet. However, the rates of blood ethanol clearance were comparable in rats consuming high fat and low fat diets. Therefore, the transport of reducing equivalents into the mitochondria under these conditions does not appear to be rate-limiting for ethanol metabolism.

The effect of epimerization on agonist and antagonist activities of morphine and dihydromorphine, and those of their N-allyl, -propyl and -cyclopropylmethyl derivatives, were studied in rat tail ...flick, hot plate and mice hot plate and in isolated guinea-pig ileum assays, respectively. Using the rat tail flick, hot plate and mice hot plate tests, isomorphine and dihydroisomorphine were observed to produce dose-dependent, naloxone-reversible agonist (antinociceptive) actions, in a similar dose range as their parent molecules (relative potencies: 0.6-1.9). Also, these compounds produced agonist activities in isolated tissue preparations in a naloxone-reversible manner. While the N-substituted derivatives of isomorphine and dihydroisomorphine failed to produce antinociceptive activities in the rat tail flick test, they proved to be strong agonists in the guinea-pig ileum experiments, although the Ke values of naloxone were 5-6 times higher against these compounds than against their N-CH3 counterparts. Both the agonist and antagonist activities of the N-cyclopropylmethyl derivatives were found to be most potent in the guinea-pig ileum. The epimerization of morphine and dihydromorphine and their N-substituted derivatives evoked only slight changes in opioid activities in vitro. In vivo, merely the allyl substitution on nitrogen influenced the antagonist activities of epimer pairs. In contrast, substantial changes in opioid profile were observed when N-methyl was replaced by allyl-, propyl- or cyclopropylmethyl. Changes performed this way evoked, on the one hand, an enhancement of the affinities of compounds to mu-receptors, with simultaneous loss of intrinsic efficacy at these receptors, and, on the other hand, promoted the appearance of an agonist profile on a distinct (kappa) opioid receptor.
