In this paper we present a general method for multichannel image restoration based on regularized χ2. We introduce separable regularizations that account for the dynamics of the model and take ...advantage of the continuities present in the data, leaving only two hyper-parameters to tune. We illustrate a practical implementation of this method in the context of host galaxy subtraction for the Nearby SuperNova Factory (SNfactory). We show that the image restoration obtained fulfils the stringent requirements on bias and photometricity needed by this programme. The reconstruction yields sub-per cent integrated residuals in all the synthetic filters considered both on real and simulated data. Even though our implementation is tied to the SNfactory data, the method translates to any hyper-spectral data. As such, it is of direct relevance to several new generation instruments like MUSE. Also, this technique could be applied to multiband astronomical imaging for which image reconstruction is important, for example, to increase image resolution for weak-lensing surveys.

Context.
Mass loss from long-period variable stars (LPV) is an important contributor to the evolution of galactic abundances. Dust formation is understood to play an essential role in mass loss. It ...has, however, proven difficult to develop measurements that strongly constrain the location and timing of dust nucleation and acceleration.
Aims.
Interferometric imaging has the potential to constrain the geometry and dynamics of mass loss. High angular resolution studies of various types have shown that LPVs have a distinct core-halo structure. These have also shown that LPV images commonly exhibit a non-circular shape. The nature of this shape and its implications are yet to be understood.
Methods.
Multi-telescope interferometric measurements taken with the Interferometric Optical Telescope Array (IOTA) provide imagery of the LPV Mira in the
H
-band. This wavelength region is well suited to studying mass loss given the low continuum opacity, which allows for emission to be observed over a very long path in the stellar atmosphere and envelope.
Results.
The observed visibilities are consistent with a simple core-halo model to represent the central object and the extended molecular layers but, in addition, they demonstrate a substantial asymmetry. An analysis with image reconstruction software shows that the asymmetry is consistent with a localized absorbing patch. The observed opacity is tentatively associated with small dust grains, which will grow substantially during a multi-year ejection process. Spatial information along with a deduced dust content of the cloud, known mass loss rates, and ejection velocities provide evidence for the pulsational pumping of the extended molecular layers. The cloud may be understood as a spatially local zone of enhanced dust formation, very near to the pulsating halo. The observed mass loss could be provided by several such active regions around the star.
Conclusions.
This result provides an additional clue for better understanding the clumpiness of dust production in the atmosphere of AGB stars. It is compatible with scenarios where the combination of pulsation and convection play a key role in the process of mass loss.

Aims. This paper reports on H-band interferometric observations of Betelgeuse made at the three-telescope interferometer IOTA. We image Betelgeuse and its asymmetries to understand the spatial ...variation of the photosphere, including its diameter, limb darkening, effective temperature, surrounding brightness, and bright (or dark) star spots. Methods. We used different theoretical simulations of the photosphere and dusty environment to model the visibility data. We made images with parametric modeling and two image reconstruction algorithms: MIRA and WISARD. Results. We measure an average limb-darkened diameter of 44.28 ± 0.15 mas with linear and quadratic models and a Rosseland diameter of 45.03 ± 0.12 mas with a MARCS model. These measurements lead us to derive an updated effective temperature of 3600 ± 66 K. We detect a fully-resolved environment to which the silicate dust shell is likely to contribute. By using two imaging reconstruction algorithms, we unveiled two bright spots on the surface of Betelgeuse. One spot has a diameter of about 11 mas and accounts for about 8.5% of the total flux. The second one is unresolved (diameter < 9 mas) with 4.5% of the total flux. Conclusions. Resolved images of Betelgeuse in the H band are asymmetric at the level of a few percent. The MOLsphere is not detected in this wavelength range. The amount of measured limb-darkening is in good agreement with model predictions. The two spots imaged at the surface of the star are potential signatures of convective cells.

We introduce STECKMAP (STEllar Content and Kinematics via Maximum A Posteriori likelihood), a method for recovering the kinematic properties of a galaxy simultaneously with its stellar content from ...integrated light spectra. It is an extension of STECMAP (presented recently by Ocvirk et al.) to the general case where the velocity distribution of the underlying stars is also unknown. The reconstructions of the stellar age distribution, the age-metallicity relation and the line-of-sight velocity distribution (LOSVD) are all non-parametric, i.e. no specific shape is assumed. The only a priori conditions that we use are positivity and the requirement that the solution is smooth enough. The smoothness parameter can be set by generalized cross-validation according to the level of noise in the data in order to avoid overinterpretation. We use single stellar populations (SSPs) from pégase-hr (R= 10 000, λ= 4 000–6 800 Å, from Le Borgne et al.) to test the method through realistic simulations. Non-Gaussianities in LOSVDs are reliably recovered with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as low as 20 per 0.2 Å pixel. It turns out that the recovery of the stellar content is not degraded by the simultaneous recovery of the kinematic distribution, so that the resolution in age and error estimates given in Ocvirk et al. remain appropriate when used with STECKMAP. We also explore the case of age-dependent kinematics (i.e. when each stellar component has its own LOSVD). We separate the bulge and disc components of an idealized simplified spiral galaxy in integrated light from high-quality pseudo-data (SNR = 100 per pixel, R= 10 000), and constrain the kinematics (mean projected velocity, projected velocity dispersion) and age of both components.

Context. It is now generally accepted that the near-infrared excess of Herbig AeBe stars originates in the dust of a circumstellar disk. Aims. The aims of this article are to infer the radial and ...vertical structure of these disks at scales of order 1 au, and the properties of the dust grains. Methods. The program objects (51 in total) were observed with the H-band (1.6 mu m) PIONIER/VLTI interferometer. The largest baselines allowed us to resolve (at least partially) structures of a few tenths of an au at typical distances of a few hundred parsecs. Dedicated UBVRIJHK photometric measurements were also obtained. Spectral and 2D geometrical parameters are extracted via fits of a few simple models: ellipsoids and broadened rings with azimuthal modulation. Model bias is mitigated by parallel fits of physical disk models. Sample statistics were evaluated against similar statistics for the physical disk models to infer properties of the sample objects as a group. Results. We find that dust at the inner rim of the disk has a sublimation temperature T sub(sub)approximate 1800 K. A ring morphology is confirmed for approximately half the resolved objects; these rings are wide delta r/r> or = 0.5. A wide ring favors a rim that, on the star-facing side, looks more like a knife edge than a doughnut. The data are also compatible with the combination of a narrow ring and an inner disk of unspecified nature inside the dust sublimation radius. The disk inner part has a thickness z/rapproximate 0.2, flaring to z/rapproximate 0.5 in the outer part. We confirm the known luminosity-radius relation; a simple physical model is consistent with both the mean luminosity-radius relation and the ring relative width; however, a significant spread around the mean relation is present. In some of the objects we find a halo component, fully resolved at the shortest interferometer spacing, that is related to the HAeBe class.

Context.
In recent decades, direct imaging has confirmed the existence of substellar companions (exoplanets or brown dwarfs) on wide orbits (>10 au) around their host stars. In striving to understand ...their formation and evolution mechanisms, in 2015 we initiated the SPHERE infrared survey for exoplanets (SHINE), a systematic direct imaging survey of young, nearby stars that is targeted at exploring their demographics.
Aims.
We aim to detect and characterize the population of giant planets and brown dwarfs beyond the snow line around young, nearby stars. Combined with the survey completeness, our observations offer the opportunity to constrain the statistical properties (occurrence, mass and orbital distributions, dependency on the stellar mass) of these young giant planets.
Methods.
In this study, we present the observing and data analysis strategy, the ranking process of the detected candidates, and the survey performances for a subsample of 150 stars that are representative of the full SHINE sample. Observations were conducted in a homogeneous way between February 2015 and February 2017 with the dedicated ground-based VLT/SPHERE instrument equipped with the IFS integral field spectrograph and the IRDIS dual-band imager, covering a spectral range between 0.9 and 2.3 μm. We used coronographic, angular, and spectral differential imaging techniques to achieve the best detection performances for this study, down to the planetary mass regime.
Results.
We processed, in a uniform manner, more than 300 SHINE observations and datasets to assess the survey typical sensitivity as a function of the host star and of the observing conditions. The median detection performance reached 5
σ
-contrasts of 13 mag at 200 mas and 14.2 mag at 800 mas with the IFS (
YJ
and
YJH
bands), and of 11.8 mag at 200 mas, 13.1 mag at 800 mas, and 15.8 mag at 3 as with IRDIS in
H
band, delivering one of the deepest sensitivity surveys thus far for young, nearby stars. A total of sixteen substellar companions were imaged in this first part of SHINE: seven brown dwarf companions and ten planetary-mass companions.These include two new discoveries, HIP 65426 b and HIP 64892 B, but not the planets around PDS70 that had not been originally selected for the SHINE core sample. A total of 1483 candidates were detected, mainly in the large field of view that characterizes IRDIS. The color-magnitude diagrams, low-resolution spectrum (when available with IFS), and follow-up observations enabled us to identify the nature (background contaminant or comoving companion) of about 86% of our subsample. The remaining cases are often connected to crowded-field follow-up observations that were missing. Finally, even though SHINE was not initially designed for disk searches, we imaged twelve circumstellar disks, including three new detections around the HIP 73145, HIP 86598, and HD 106906 systems.
Conclusions.
Nowadays, direct imaging provides a unique opportunity to probe the outer part of exoplanetary systems beyond 10 au to explore planetary architectures, as highlighted by the discoveries of: one new exoplanet, one new brown dwarf companion, and three new debris disks during this early phase of SHINE. It also offers the opportunity to explore and revisit the physical and orbital properties of these young, giant planets and brown dwarf companions (relative position, photometry, and low-resolution spectrum in near-infrared, predicted masses, and contrast in order to search for additional companions). Finally, these results highlight the importance of finalizing the SHINE systematic observation of about 500 young, nearby stars for a full exploration of their outer part to explore the demographics of young giant planets beyond 10 au and to identify the most interesting systems for the next generation of high-contrast imagers on very large and extremely large telescopes.

Context.
The innermost astronomical unit (au) in protoplanetary disks is a key region for stellar and planet formation, as exoplanet searches have shown a large occurrence of close-in planets that ...are located within the first au around their host star.
Aims.
We aim to reveal the morphology of the disk inner rim using near-infrared interferometric observations with milli-arcsecond resolution provided by near-infrared multitelescope interferometry.
Methods.
We provide model-independent reconstructed images of 15 objects selected from the Herbig AeBe survey carried out with PIONIER at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer, using the semi-parametric approach for image reconstruction of chromatic objects. We propose a set of methods to reconstruct and analyze the images in a consistent way.
Results.
We find that 40% of the systems (6/15) are centrosymmetric at the angular resolution of the observations. For the rest of the objects, we find evidence for asymmetric emission due to moderate-to-strong inclination of a disk-like structure for ~30% of the objects (5/15) and noncentrosymmetric morphology due to a nonaxisymmetric and possibly variable environment (4/15, ~27%). Among the systems with a disk-like structure, 20% (3/15) show a resolved dust-free cavity. Finally, we do not detect extended emission beyond the inner rim.
Conclusions.
The image reconstruction process is a powerful tool to reveal complex disk inner rim morphologies, which is complementary to the fit of geometrical models. At the angular resolution reached by near-infrared interferometric observations, most of the images are compatible with a centrally peaked emission (no cavity). For the most resolved targets, image reconstruction reveals morphologies that cannot be reproduced by generic parametric models (e.g., perturbed inner rims or complex brightness distributions). Moreover, the nonaxisymmetric disks show that the spatial resolution probed by optical interferometers makes the observations of the near-infrared emission (inside a few au) sensitive to temporal evolution with a time-scale down to a few weeks. The evidence of nonaxisymmetric emission that cannot be explained by simple inclination and radiative transfer effects requires alternative explanations, such as a warping of the inner disks. Interferometric observations can therefore be used to follow the evolution of the asymmetry of those disks at an au or sub-au scale.

Aims. We aim to explore the photosphere of the very cool late-type star VX Sgr and in particular the characterization of molecular layers above the continuum forming photosphere. Methods. We obtained ...interferometric observations with the VLTI/AMBER interferometer using the fringe tracker FINITO in the spectral domain 1.45-2.50 m with a spectral resolution of and baselines ranging from 15 to 88 m. We performed independent image reconstruction for different wavelength bins and fit the interferometric data with a geometrical toy model. We also compared the data to 1D dynamical models of Miras atmosphere and to 3D hydrodynamical simulations of red supergiant (RSG) and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Results. Reconstructed images and visibilities show a strong wavelength dependence. The H-band images display two bright spots whose positions are confirmed by the geometrical toy model. The inhomogeneities are qualitatively predicted by 3D simulations. At m and in the region 2.35-2.50 m, the photosphere appears extended and the radius is larger than in the H band. In this spectral region, the geometrical toy model locates a third bright spot outside the photosphere that can be a feature of the molecular layers. The wavelength dependence of the visibility can be qualitatively explained by 1D dynamical models of Mira atmospheres. The best-fitting photospheric models show a good match with the observed visibilities and give a photospheric diameter of 0.50 mas. The H sub(2)O molecule seems to be the dominant absorber in the molecular layers. Conclusions. We show that the atmosphere of VX Sgr seems to resemble Mira/AGB star model atmospheres more closely than do RSG model atmospheres. In particular, we see molecular (water) layers that are typical of Mira stars.

This lecture is an introduction to image synthesis with emphasis set on the specific problems encountered in optical (visible/IR) interferometry. Image synthesis is first presented in the context of ...complex visibility data obtained with a known transfer function. This simple case is used to introduce the concept of regularization which is needed to lever degeneracies (due to missing spatial frequencies) of the image reconstruction problem. When the complex amplitude transmissions are unknown but vary slowly with respect to the exposure time, the self calibration method can recover both the amplitude transmissions and the image. When the complex amplitude transmissions vary too quickly, as it is generally the case in optical interferometry, the data consist in non-linear measurements such as the powerspectrum and the bispectrum which are insensitive to the fast varying aberrations set by the turbulence at the cost of some loss of Fourier phase information. We show how the inverse problem approach presented for the simpler cases can be extended to obtain effective image restoration algorithms.
