The purpose of this systematic review was to identify adolescents’ awareness on the human papillomavirus (HPV), the HPV vaccine, and the willingness to undergo the vaccination. A systematic review of ...studies concerning the adolescent’s knowledge and education on the admission of the HPV vaccine was carried out, through the Medline/PubMed and the Google Scholar databases, covering information on adolescent attitudes towards HPV vaccination, as well as their perceptions regarding the vaccination and the need for more training, towards the public information about the HPV and the HPV vaccine. This study concludes that adolescents are poorly informed about the HPV and the preventive vaccination issues, underestimating the likelihood of the infection by the virus. The way to improve their knowledge about the HPV and the implications of the HPV infection is to provide information through the framework of compulsory schooling, primary health care, and the development of informative interactive interventions. The awareness for the need of training about the HPV and its implications should be broadened to address the major barrier to vaccination, which is regarded to be the lack of adequate information. The knowledge and the perceptible susceptibility to the HPV infection and HPV-related diseases among adolescents demonstrate the need for a well-designed training program to bridge the gap of information about the HPV virus and to accept the HPV vaccine.

Torsion of pedunculated subserosal leiomyoma of the uterus is a rare cause of acute abdomen. A 27-year-old female patient with twisted subserosal pedunculated uterine leiomyoma misdiagnosed as an ...adnexal mass underwent laparotomy. The patient came to the Emergency Department of General Hospital of Trikala with symptoms of acute abdomen. Primarily, clinical-laboratory examination, transabdominal ultrasound, raised the suspicion of a twisted adnexal mass. Intraoperatively, a twisted pedunculated subserosal leiomyoma of the uterus was identified and myomectomy was performed. Histological examination of the surgical specimen confirmed the diagnosis. On the third postoperative day, our patient was discharged. This paper underscores the rarity of torsion of the uterine pedunculated subserosal leiomyoma and emphasizes the necessity of urgent surgical intervention. The challenges of preoperative diagnosis are highlighted, especially when modern diagnostic imaging modalities are unavailable.

Background The midwife’s role throughout pregnancy and delivery management is essential, with multiple healthcare systems even following a midwife-led model of care. Of particular interest is the ...improvement and optimisation of midwifery postpartum care, which in Greece is empirically known to have decreased in quality, both due to the economic crisis and the recent pandemic. Aims To collect patient-reported outcomes with regard to the quality of midwifery services in Greece, ascertain baseline patient characteristics that may affect quality assessment, identify key areas for improvement, and propose patient subgroups who would most benefit from more specialized care. Setting and design A prospective, cross-sectional, questionnaire-based survey using the Measurement of Midwifery quality postpartum (MMAYpostpartum) questionnaire was conducted in public and private postpartum care centers in Greece. Methods The MMAYpostpartum questionnaire was distributed to 316 eligible women who received postpartum midwifery care in a healthcare center in Greece during the past three years. Multivariate linear regression was performed to examine significant correlations between baseline parameters and questionnaire scores. Results Ultimately, 204 answers were collected and analyzed. The patient's mean age was 35.5 years, and the mean body mass index (BMI) was 23.5. Overall, submitted scores were lower than those observed in the literature. A statistically significant correlation between older age, delivery at a public hospital, a history of hospitalization during pregnancy, and a lower midwifery service score was demonstrated. No other factors had a statistically significant effect on the quality score. Conclusions Delivery at public healthcare centers, older maternal age, and a history of hospitalization during pregnancy are significant predictors of a lower perceived quality of midwifery care. Thus, such patient subgroups may constitute potential targets for more meticulous midwifery care when resource setting prohibits the overall improvement of quality. Further research is required to collect additional data on patient insight and to test the present observations in a clinical setting.
Septate uterus is the most common congenital uterine malformation. It has been associated with poor reproductive outcomes, such as infertility and recurrent miscarriage, in the context of both ...assisted and non-assisted reproduction, though the exact underlying pathophysiological reasons remain unclear. Diagnosis is based on two-dimensional and three-dimensional ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, or laparoscopic/hysteroscopic findings. Hysteroscopic repair of the uterine septum has been shown to confer several benefits to reproductive outcomes, though this fact remains in question, due to inconsistent and or low-quality evidence in the medical literature. An individualized approach to the treatment of infertility patients with septate uteri is imperative, given the plethora of possible underlying factors that may complicate management. In this report, we present the case of a patient with a subseptate uterus and a history of infertility, who, following hysteroscopic metroplasty, managed to conceive and ultimately successfully deliver a healthy child.

The description of this case concerns the early diagnosis and the surgical treatment of a patient diagnosed with an ectopic ovarian pregnancy. A gravida 2, para 0 woman with a history of termination ...of pregnancy in the second trimester, was referred to the outpatients of the Gynecologic Department of the General Hospital of Trikala, reporting vaginal bleeding, accompanied by a deep, mild pain in the abdomen for a few days. The urine pregnancy test was positive. The transvaginal ultrasound in combination with the β-chorionic gonadotropin level was indicative of an ectopic pregnancy, and the surgical treatment of the patient was decided. Intraoperatively, the presence of an ovarian ectopic pregnancy was detected, and a wedge resection of the affected ovary was performed. The patient was discharged from our clinic on the third postoperative day, with instructions for weekly follow-up of the β-chorionic gonadotropin level until it returns to normal values.

Transient pregnancy-related osteoporosis of the hip is a rare, idiopathic, benign, and usually self-limiting condition caused by edema of the bone marrow, which can be visualized on magnetic ...resonance imaging. Bilateral localization of the disease is even less common. Our case concerns a 31-year-old primigravida who, during the 35th week of pregnancy, was hospitalized at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic of the General Hospital of Trikala with lumbar and hip pain. The pain gradually increased in intensity and was accompanied by severe movement limitation. No history of falls or injury was reported. Her personal history was unremarkable, and the course of the pregnancy was uneventful. A clinical examination by a team of orthopedic surgeons established a diagnosis of acute hip and back pain. Rest and administration of paracetamol did not improve her clinical condition. During the postpartum and lactation period, the lack of symptom relief led to the decision to further evaluate the patient. The diagnosis of pregnancy-related transient osteoporosis of both hips was established by magnetic resonance imaging. Immediate treatment with bisphosphonate medication after the discontinuation of breastfeeding led to a definitive remission of the symptoms three months later. In this study, after the case description, a brief literature review of this rare clinical entity is presented. Proper knowledge of this condition helps to provide the best possible short- and long-term prognostic outcomes for the mother, fetus, and newborn.
Acute appendicitis is the most common non-obstetric reason for exploratory laparotomy during pregnancy. This case report involves a primigravida patient who presented to the emergency department of ...the General Hospital of Trikala at 15 weeks of gestation due to diffuse abdominal pain, primarily in the epigastric region. She also reported watery bowel movements. The ongoing atypical clinical symptoms, along with elevated inflammatory markers, strongly indicated a diagnosis of acute appendicitis. An immediate exploratory laparotomy was performed, during which acute localized inflammation of the appendix was found, leading to an appendectomy. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. The patient reported pain relief immediately after the surgery. On the fourth postoperative day, she was discharged without any signs of a threatened second-trimester miscarriage. At 39 gestational weeks, she delivered by elective cesarean section due to breech presentation. This paper discusses the case and highlights the significant challenges in the early diagnosis and management of acute appendicitis during pregnancy, emphasizing the importance of preventing potentially life-threatening complications for both the mother and the fetus.
Fertility issues are becoming increasingly prevalent, leading many couples to seek fertility treatment at specialized centers. Infertility is a diverse clinical condition, with multiple potential ...etiologic factors and variable severity in its manifestation. Regardless of the underlying factors and severity, routine fertility assessment rarely differs between cases, with an essential step being fallopian tube patency assessment. Hysterosalpingo-foam sonography (HyFoSy) is the latest available diagnostic technique to assess this parameter, offering robust results, with reduced intra-procedural pain and equipment requirements, in the convenience of the office setting. However, apart from its diagnostic value, HyFoSy has also demonstrated a therapeutic tubal flushing effect, that may be the decisive factor for couples with mild infertility to spontaneously conceive. In this report, we present the case of a couple with mild infertility, who managed to spontaneously conceive after a HyFoSy examination, and in fact within the same cycle.
Abdominal wall endometriosis is a rare form of extrapelvic endometriosis, frequently diagnosed with delay in most cases. It is typically iatrogenic and primarily associated with procedures such as ...cesarean sections or other gynecological surgeries. In our patient, endometriosis at the laparotomy scar was diagnosed relatively early, approximately two months after the onset of symptoms, which manifested 10 months after the last cesarean section. The patient, who had an obstetric history of three cesarean sections, presented at the Gynecology outpatient clinic of the General Hospital of Trikala, complaining of pain associated with menstruation located in the lower abdomen, near the surgical scar. Based on clinical and imaging findings, abdominal wall endometriosis was suspected, leading to a decision for wide excision of the endometriotic lesion. Histological examination of the surgical specimen confirmed the diagnosis. The postoperative course was uneventful, and three months after the surgery, the patient reported complete resolution of symptoms. This case report emphasizes the importance of integrating advanced diagnostic methods alongside classic clinical findings for the accurate diagnosis of abdominal wall endometriosis. It also highlights the contribution of surgical treatment through wide excision of the endometriotic lesion, in facilitating early diagnosis, achieving cure, and minimizing the risk of disease recurrence in the future.
