•Application of blockchain technology in crowdfunding platforms is investigated.•Four themes emerge: reliability, transparency, trustworthiness, and social value.•Blockchain technologies provide an ...alternative base for crowdfunding platforms.
This study investigates the practical applications of blockchain technology in socially oriented crowdfunding platforms (SCPs). In recent years, SCPs have grown due to their perceived benefits compared to traditional funding channels. However, skepticism remains regarding the potential for the further development of crowdfunding platforms, especially SCPs, due to restrictions on attracting investment as well as concerns related to transparency, reliability, and trustworthiness. The recent applications of blockchain technology in crowdfunding promise a possible solution to current obstacles, and may facilitate SCPs. Employing a qualitative research approach based on three case studies, this study addresses how blockchain technology can be used to facilitate the social value creation of crowdfunding when adopted as an alternative infrastructure. Accordingly, this study identifies both the facilitators of the social value creation process through blockchain technology (e.g., reducing operational costs, increasing trust and transparency, and cultivating a broader crowdfunding community) and the barriers of this application in terms of development costs and legal requirements. In addition to answering calls to investigate the role of blockchains in facilitating social activities, this study expands the emerging literature by demonstrating the practical applications of blockchain use in crowdfunding.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most aggressive hematopoietic malignancy characterized by uncontrolled proliferation of myeloid progenitor cells within the bone marrow. Tumor suppressor ...cylindromatosis (CYLD) is a deubiquitinating enzyme, which suppresses inflammatory response in macrophages. Macrophages have a central role in the defense against foreign substances and circulating cancer cells by their professional phagocytic capacity. Little is known about contributions of CYLD to changes in biological properties of human macrophages and its involvement in AML. The present study, therefore, explored whether macrophage functions in healthy individuals and AML patients are influenced by CYLD. To this end, ninety-two newly diagnosed AML patients and 80 healthy controls were recruited. The mRNA expression levels of inflammation-related genes were evaluated by real-time PCR, cell maturation, phagocytosis and apoptosis assays by flow cytometry and secretion of inflammatory cytokines by ELISA. As a result, AML patients with the low CYLD expression were significantly higher in M4/M5 than other subtypes according to the FAB type. The low CYLD expression was also closely associated with older patients and enhanced level of LDH in AML. Moreover, treatment of normal macrophages with CYLD siRNA enhanced activation of STAT-1, leading to increases in expressions of maturation markers and IL-6 production as well as suppression in cell apoptosis and phagocytosis, while macrophage phagocytosis from AML M4/M5b was higher than that from healthy controls upon CYLD siRNA transfection through STAT1 signalling. In conclusion, the inhibitory effects of CYLD on macrophage functions are expected to affect the immune response in AML.

The insect bacterium Wolbachia pipientis is being introgressed into Aedes aegypti populations as an intervention against the transmission of medically important arboviruses. Here we compare Ae. ...aegypti mosquitoes infected with wMelCS or wAlbB to the widely used wMel Wolbachia strain on an Australian nuclear genetic background for their susceptibility to infection by dengue virus (DENV) genotypes spanning all four serotypes. All Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes were more resistant to intrathoracic DENV challenge than their wildtype counterparts. Blocking of DENV replication was greatest by wMelCS. Conversely, wAlbB-infected mosquitoes were more susceptible to whole body infection than wMel and wMelCS. We extended these findings via mosquito oral feeding experiments, using viremic blood from 36 acute, hospitalised dengue cases in Vietnam, additionally including wMel and wildtype mosquitoes on a Vietnamese nuclear genetic background. As above, wAlbB was less effective at blocking DENV replication in the abdomen compared to wMel and wMelCS. The transmission potential of all Wolbachia-infected mosquito lines (measured by the presence/absence of infectious DENV in mosquito saliva) after 14 days, was significantly reduced compared to their wildtype counterparts, and lowest for wMelCS and wAlbB. These data support the use of wAlbB and wMelCS strains for introgression field trials and the biocontrol of DENV transmission. Furthermore, despite observing significant differences in transmission potential between wildtype mosquitoes from Australia and Vietnam, no difference was observed between wMel-infected mosquitoes from each background suggesting that Wolbachia may override any underlying variation in DENV transmission potential.

Abstract
There are growing concerns on stress among nurses in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in South-East Asia. It is important to improve mental health among nurses in these countries. ...The objective of this study was to examine the efficacy of two types of newly developed smartphone-based stress management programs in improving depressive and anxiety symptoms among hospital nurses in Vietnam. This study was a three-arm (including two intervention groups and one control group) randomized trial. Participants were recruited from nurses in a large general hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam. Two types (free-choice and fixed sequential order) of smartphone-based stress management programs were developed. Participants were randomly allocated to Program A (a free-choice, multimodule stress management), Program B (a fixed-order, internet cognitive behavioral therapy, iCBT), or a control group (treatment as usual). The depressive and anxiety symptoms were measured by using the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scales at baseline, 3-, and 7-month follow-up surveys. 951 participants were randomly allocated to each of the three groups. Program B showed a statistically significant effect on improving depressive symptoms at 3-month (p = 0.048), but not at 7-month (p = 0.92); Cohen’s d was − 0.18 (95% CI − 0.34 to − 0.02) and 0.03 (95% CI − 1.00 to 1.05), respectively. Program A failed to show a significant intervention effect on any of the outcomes at 3- or 7-month follow-up (p > 0.05). Despite the small effect size, the present fixed-order iCBT program seems effective in improving depression of hospital nurses in Vietnam. A public health impact of the intervention can be scalable, when considering its accessibility and minimal cost.

Dengue virus serotypes (DENV-1 to -4) can be transmitted vertically in Aedes aegpti mosquitoes. Whether infection with the wMel strain of the endosymbiont Wolbachia can reduce the incidence of ...vertical transmission of DENV from infected females to their offspring is not well understood. A laboratory colony of Vietnamese Ae. aegypti, both with and without wMel infection, were infected with DENV-1 by intrathoracic injection (IT) to estimate the rate of vertical transmission (VT) of the virus. VT in the DENV-infected mosquitoes was calculated via the infection rate estimation from mosquito pool data using maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). In 6047 F1 Vietnamese wild-type Ae. aegypti, the MLE of DENV-1 infection was 1.49 per 1000 mosquitoes (95% confidence interval CI 0.73-2.74). In 5500 wMel-infected Ae. aegypti, the MLE infection rate was 0 (95% CI 0-0.69). The VT rates between mosquito lines showed a statistically significant difference. The results reinforce the view that VT is a rare event in wild-type mosquitoes and that infection with wMel is effective in reducing VT.

Polycythemia vera (PV) is characterized by increased proliferation and accumulation of erythroid and mature myeloid cells and megakaryocyte in the bone marrow and peripheral blood. The JAK2V617F ...mutation is present in most PV patients. Deubiquitinase (DUB) genes, including TNFAIP3 (A20), CYLD and Cezanne, function as negative regulators of inflammatory reaction through nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-ęB) signaling.
To determine single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) profiling and gene expression of the DUB genes as well as the immunophenotype of PV cells.
Seventy-seven patients with PV and 55 healthy individuals with well-characterized clinical profiles were enrolled. Gene expression profile was determined using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), the immunophenotype with flow cytometry, secretion of cytokines using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and gene polymorphisms using direct DNA sequencing.
Inactivation of A20, CYLD and Cezanne, and increases in interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-á) levels, as well as the enhanced number of CD25+CD4 T, Th1 and regulatory T cells were observed in PV patients. The genetic analysis of the CYLD gene identified 11 SNPs, in which a novel W736G nsSNP in exon 15 and a SNP c.2483+6 T>G in intron 15 were observed in PV cases with the frequencies of 18.2% and 5.2%, respectively. The W736G non-synonymous SNP (nsSNP) was found to be most likely to exert deleterious effect and the intronic SNP c.2483+6 T>G was identified as aberrant splicing. Sequencing of Cezanne gene identified 7 SNPs in intron 10 and PV carriers of the SNPs had at least 2 SNPs in this gene. Importantly, PV carriers of the W736G nsSNP had multiple SNPs in CYLD, but not in A20 or Cezanne gene.
Two identified SNPs, including the W736G nsSNP and the SNP c.2483+6 T>G, in CYLD gene might be associated with a risk of PV disease, in which the deleterious effect of the W736G nsSNP in CYLD gene could contribute to the pathogenesis of PV.
Two different synthetic approaches to novel heterocyclic hybrid compounds of 4-azapodophyllotoxin were investigated. The obtained products were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, nuclear ...magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and high-resolution mass spectrometry. MTT protocol was then performed to examine the cytotoxic activity of these products against KB, HepG2, A549, MCF7, and Hek-293 cell lines. The cytotoxic assessment indicated that all products displayed moderate to high cytotoxicity against all tested cancer cell lines. The most active compound 13k containing the 2-methoxypyridin-4-yl group exhibited selective cytotoxicity against KB, A549, and HepG2 cell lines with the IC
values ranging from 0.23 to 0.27 μM, which were between 5- to 10-fold more potent than the positive control ellipticine. Compounds 13a (HetAr = thiophen-3-yl) and 13d (HetAr = 5-bromofuran-2-yl) displayed high cytotoxic selectivity for A549 and HepG2 cancer cell lines when compared to the other cancer cell lines and low toxicity to the normal Hek-293 cell line. Molecular docking study was conducted to evaluate the interaction of new synthesized compounds with the colchicine-binding-site of tubulin. Besides that, physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties of the most active compounds 13h,k were predicted.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been increasing rapidly in Vietnam as well as world-wide. One of the major causes of the condition is low fiber intake. It is difficult to eat large amounts of ...vegetables every day to reach a sufficient amount of fiber but Textured Soybean Protein is rich in fiber. The study aimed to examine the effectiveness of Textured Soybean Protein consumption on T2DM patients. In this randomized controlled trial, 47 T2DM patients were divided into an intervention group (n=24) and a control group (n=23). The intervention group were asked to consume 40 g Textured Soybean Protein in 2 dishes for 4 wk. The control group continued their usual diet. Fasting blood samples were drawn before and after intervention to measure fasting plasma glucose (FPG), fructosamine, low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), total cholesterol (T-C), and triglycerides (TG). A 3-day food record was conducted at 1 wk before (baseline) and at the last week (final) of the intervention period. In the Textured Soybean Protein consumption group, there was a significant decrease in fructosamine (363±86 μmol/L to 347±82 μmol/L, p=0.03), T-C (5.2±0.9 mmol/L to 4.8±0.8 mmol/L, p=0.02) and TG (3.5±2.2 mmol/L to 2.8±2.0 mmol/L, p=0.02). Total energy intake in the two groups did not change significantly. There was a shift in the dietary pattern of the Textured Soybean Protein consumption group; lipid intake showed a significant decrease (p=0.001) and fiber intake increased by 6 g (p<0.001). The consumption of Textured Soybean Protein in the diet could have favorable effects in improving glycemic and lipid concentrations in T2DM patients.
To address the upcoming reform curriculum initiative following competency-based learning in Vietnam, this study examines how variations of a contextualized task allow students to experience the ...mathematical modelling process. We explore how Grade 10 students respond to tasks with different levels of authenticity when they first attempt such tasks. Adapting the Theory of Authentic Task Situations, we designed variations of the Goat Cage task and implemented them with six small groups of students. Results showed that the modelling processes that the students progressed through differed in mathematical models used and real-world considerations, with diverse approaches when solving the more-authentic variation. Not all phases of the modelling process were observed explicitly when they engaged in the tasks. Students showed a positive disposition towards tasks with more authentic contextual information. The study suggests ways to adapt contextualized tasks to make them more authentic, which allows students to experience a holistic modelling process.

A convenient three‐component synthetic approach was developed en route to new and significative N‐arylated‐dihydrobenzogquinoline‐5,10‐diones using 2‐hydroxy‐1,4‐naphthoquinone, a variety of aromatic ...aldehydes, and 4‐(arylamino)furan‐2(5H)‐ones. A sequence of steps including Knoevenagel condensation, Michael addition, 1,3‐hydrogen shift, intramolecular cyclization and dehydration led to the formation of products. All the products were structurally characterized by spectroscopic techniques and assessed in terms of their cytotoxicity profile against four cancer cell lines (KB, HepG2, A549, and MCF7), and human embryonic kidney (Hek‐293) cell lines.
