Es wurde das Verzinkungsverhalten von Baustahl beim Stückverzinken im technisch nutzbaren Bereich untersucht. Dazu wurde das Schichtwachstum der Zinküberzüge bei Verwendung konventioneller ...ZnPb-Schmelze anhand von Schichtdicken und Gefügeausbildungen in Ab-hängigkeit von den relevanten Parametern ermittelt. Weiterhin wurde der Einfluss des Was-serstoffs im Stahl auf die Schichtbildung beim Feuerverzinken eingeschätzt. Das Resultat ist eine umfassende Modellvorstellung der Schichtbildungsvorgänge beim Feuerverzinken von 435°C bis 620°C. Sie erklärt das Verzinkungsverhalten von Baustahl und trägt zum Verständnis vieler Phänomene beim Feuerverzinken bei. Weiterhin wurden Überzüge aus legierten Zinkschmelzen untersucht. Die Ergebnisse wurden hinsichtlich der Wirkung der einzelnen Legierungselemente in der Zinkschmelze interpretiert. Dem Anwender wird ein Leitfaden zur Verfügung gestellt, der Vor- und Nachteile der in der Praxis verfügbaren Zinkschmelzen beschreibt.
Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, die Auswirkungen der geothermischen Energieerzeugung aus umwelt- und naturschutzfachlicher Sicht zu untersuchen und zu bewerten. Auf der Grundlage einer umfassenden ...Literaturstudie, von Expertenbefragungen sowie der Besichtigung des Hydrothermalen Erdwärmekraftwerkes in Neustadt-Glewe und der Erdwärmesondenanlage auf dem Max-Planck-Campus in Golm wurden die für eine behördliche Genehmigung der Erschließung und Nutzung von Erdwärmevorkommen notwendigen gesetzlichen Regelungen systematisch aufgearbeitet und die mit den Techniken zur Erschließung bzw. den Anlagen zur Nutzung von Erdwärme verbundenen umweltrelevanten Wirkfaktoren ausgewiesen und systematisch dargestellt.
Darauf aufbauend wurden die potenziellen Wirkungen auf die Schutzgüter des UVPG qualitativ erfasst und, soweit es in Anbetracht des derzeitigen Standes der Forschung möglich war, quantifiziert. Die Wirkungen wurden schließlich hinsichtlich ihrer Bedeutung und Erheblichkeit im Rahmen von behördlichen Genehmigungsentscheidungen bewertet und miteinander verglichen. Die Anforderungen an den Inhalt von Antragsunterlagen wurden dargestellt.

Neocortical activity is permeated with endogenously generated fluctuations, but how these dynamics affect goal-directed behavior remains a mystery. We found that ensemble neural activity in primate ...visual cortex spontaneously fluctuated between phases of vigorous (On) and faint (Off) spiking synchronously across cortical layers. These On-Off dynamics, reflecting global changes in cortical state, were also modulated at a local scale during selective attention. Moreover, the momentary phase of local ensemble activity predicted behavioral performance. Our results show that cortical state is controlled locally within a cortical map according to cognitive demands and reveal the impact of these local changes in cortical state on goal-directed behavior.

This Editorial to the Special Issue “Science of Scaling: connecting the pathways of agricultural research and development for improved food, income and nutrition security” presents the framing, ...overview and analysis of 10 articles focussed on scaling innovation in the agricultural research for development sector. The publications cut across three categories that focus on: (i) Understanding the scaling trajectory retrospectively from a longer term, systems perspective, (ii) Understanding scaling of innovation retrospectively as part of shorter term agricultural research for development interventions, and (iii) Conceptual or methodological approaches aimed at guiding scaling prospectively. Cross-cutting review of the publications leads to several insights and critically questions dominant ways of understanding and guiding scaling of innovation in the agricultural research for development sector. This provides a starting point for proposing more outcome-oriented scaling as a third wave of understanding and guiding scaling, beyond technology adoption (first wave) and the scaling of innovation (second wave). The Editorial proposes three Research Domains for the Science of Scaling: (1) ‘Understand the big picture of scaling innovation’ that can inform more realistic ideas about the factors, conditions and dynamics that affect innovation and scaling processes; (2) ‘Develop instruments that nurture efficient and responsible scaling’ that comprises new approaches, concepts and tools that can facilitate the development of evidence-based scaling strategies; and (3) ‘Create a conducive environment for scaling innovation’ that focusses on the institutional arrangements, partnership models, and monitoring and learning for scaling of innovation.

Attention improves perception by affecting different aspects of the neuronal code. It enhances firing rates, it reduces firing rate variability and noise correlations of neurons, and it alters the ...strength of oscillatory activity. Attention-induced rate enhancement in striate cortex requires cholinergic mechanisms. The neuropharmacological mechanisms responsible for attention-induced variance and noise correlation reduction or those supporting changes in oscillatory activity are unknown. We show that ionotropic glutamatergic receptor activation is required for attention-induced rate variance, noise correlation, and LFP gamma power reduction in macaque V1, but not for attention-induced rate modulations. NMDA receptors mediate attention-induced variance reduction and attention-induced noise correlation reduction. Our results demonstrate that attention improves sensory processing by a variety of mechanisms that are dissociable at the receptor level.
