In the study, tip-clearance cavitation inception and development was studied in the gap between an end face of a NACA0022-34 hydrofoil and a transparent sidewall of a test channel. The experiments ...were carried out for the attack angles of 3° and 9° and the gap width of 0.4 to 0.8 mm under various flow conditions on the cavitation number. In order to observe the tip-clearance cavitation inception and its dynamics, a high-speed visualization was applied. The leakage flow velocity was measured inside the clearance by a modified PTV technique. It was shown that unsteady dynamics of the primary cavity on the foil suction side affects the leakage flow direction and the gap cavitation evolution. An increase of the gap width causes the gap cavitation to be initiated at higher cavitation numbers.
We studied cavitating flow over the suction side of a symmetric 2D foil – a scaled-down model of high-pressure hydroturbine guide vanes (GV) – in different cavitation regimes at the attack angle of ...3°. High-speed imaging was used to analyze spatial patterns and time dynamics of the gas-vapour cavities. A hydroacoustic pressure transducer was employed to register time-spectra of pressure fluctuations nearby the hydrofoil. A PIV technique was applied to measure the velocity fields and its fluctuations. The active flow control was implemented by means of a continuous liquid supply with different flow rates through a slot channel located in the GV surface. It was found that the active mass injection does not influence the primary flow upstream of the slot channel position. For the cavitation-free and cavitation inception cases, the injection was shown to make the turbulent wake past the GV section more intense. However, at the developed cavitation regimes the active flow management made it possible to reduce substantially the amplitude or even totally suppress the periodic cavity length oscillations and pressure pulsations associated with them.

We studied cavitating flow over the suction side of two symmetric 2D foils – a NACA0015 hydrofoil and a scaled-down model of high-pressure hydroturbine guide vanes (GV) – in different cavitation regimes at several attack angles. High-speed imaging was used to analyze spatial patterns and time dynamics of the gas-vapor cavities, as well as for evaluating the characteristic integral parameters. A PIV technique was applied to measure the velocity fields and its fluctuations, which were compared for both foils and with the data measured in the non-cavitating flows at the same flow conditions. We compare the dynamics of growth and convection of traveling bubbles at a smaller attack angle and the transition of a sheet cavity pattern to a streaky one at the higher incidence on both foils. For the GV, asymmetric spanwise variations of the sheet cavity length were for the first time visualized for an unsteady regime that is characterized by alternating periodic detachments of clouds between the sidewalls of the test channel and Strouhal number of 0.27. According to numerical calculations by Decaix and Goncalvès (2013), this asymmetric behavior is very likely to be governed by the cross instability. Moreover, it was concluded that the existence of the cross instability is independent on the test body shape and its aspect ratio. For single-phase flow and cavitation inception conditions, the PIV measurements revealed the appearance of the second maximum in the fluctuating velocity distributions over the GV profile at the higher incidence angle due to the flow separation from its surface at roughly 71% of the chord length from the foil leading edge. This results in a more intensive turbulent wake past the GV compared to that behind the NACA foil. After the transition to unsteady regimes, both maxima of the fluctuating velocity over the GV vanish, the distributions become more flat and almost coincide for both foils. While at developed cavitation regimes the main flow features and cavitation dynamics do not differ much for the both foils, the detected second maximum of the fluctuating velocity for the GV at the higher attack angle makes this profile less suitable (from the hydrodynamics standpoint) for flow control in practical full-scale conditions, especially at subcavitating and cavitation inception regimes, than the NACA hydrofoil.

Кавитация представляет собой один из основных источников неустойчивостей течения, возникающих при эксплуатации гидравлического оборудования, а также является причиной эрозионного износа его рабочих ...элементов. В этой связи разработка и развитие различных методов управления кавитационными течениями является актуальной задачей для задержки развития кавитации и снижения ее негативного влияния. Одним из таких методов является модификация поверхности гидрокрыла. Цель работы: экспериментальное исследование кавитационного обтекания рифленого гидрокрыла с продольными бороздками полукруглого профиля на поверхности (НЛ2), представляющего собой уменьшенную модель направляющей лопатки высоконапорной гидротурбины, в сравнении с моделью оригинальной направляющей лопатки (НЛ1). Методы. Для анализа пространственной структуры и временной эволюции паровых каверн и оценки их интегральных характеристик была применена высокоскоростная визуализация. Скорость течения над гидрокрыльями и в их следе измерялась с помощью метода PIV, на основе измеренных ансамблей полей мгновенной скорости были получены распределения средних и турбулентных характеристик течения. Результаты. На лопатке с модифицированной поверхностью (НЛ2) кавитация зарождается в виде одиночных изолированных пузырей в канавках, которые при уменьшении числа кавитации переходят в кавитирующие стрики. Пока стрики локализованы в канавках и не взаимодействуют друг с другом, режим обтекания остается стационарным. Однако когда их размер становится больше диаметра желобков, они выходят за пределы этих углублений, взаимодействуют и образуют единую каверну, которая теряет устойчивость и начинает пульсировать. В целом бороздки на поверхности гидрокрыла позволяют в некоторой степени задержать развитие кавитации и воспрепятствовать переходу к нестационарным режимам обтекания. На нестационарном режиме динамика каверн на оригинальном гидрокрыле (НЛ1) и НЛ2 сильно отличается. Так, на НЛ1 в отличие от НЛ2 каверна никогда не исчезает полностью, каверна на НЛ1 в среднем оказывается длиннее и пульсирует с большей частотой (St=0,09) по сравнению с НЛ2 (St=0,06). Кроме того, поведение каверны в течение одного периода пульсаций оказалось довольно необычным для обеих моделей: сначала она увеличивается до максимального размера, затем несколько уменьшается и снова вырастает до максимума, после чего возвращается в исходное состояние. Причина такой динамики пока остается невыясненной. На переходном режиме обтекания, когда внутри бороздок формируются кавитирующие стрики, интенсивность турбулентных флуктуаций скорости над поверхностью НЛ2 снижается по сравнению с режимом пузырьковой кавитации. Это происходит потому, что изолированные каверны в желобках как бы восстанавливают форму модифицированного гидрокрыла, делая геометрию его поверхности более приближенной к оригинальной (НЛ1). Таким образом, профиль НЛ2 становится более заполненным благодаря локальной кавитации в бороздках. Вместе с тем наличие канавок на поверхности НЛ2 приводит к дополнительной турбулизации течения вблизи поверхности лопатки для всех рассматриваемых режимов течения, что, вероятно, и является причиной задержки развития кавитации на гидрокрыле с бороздками.
