We present an improved search for neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay of ^{136}Xe in the KamLAND-Zen experiment. Owing to purification of the xenon-loaded liquid scintillator, we achieved a ...significant reduction of the ^{110m}Ag contaminant identified in previous searches. Combining the results from the first and second phase, we obtain a lower limit for the 0νββ decay half-life of T_{1/2}^{0ν}>1.07×10^{26} yr at 90% C.L., an almost sixfold improvement over previous limits. Using commonly adopted nuclear matrix element calculations, the corresponding upper limits on the effective Majorana neutrino mass are in the range 61-165 meV. For the most optimistic nuclear matrix elements, this limit reaches the bottom of the quasidegenerate neutrino mass region.

Most theoretical approaches used in nuclear astrophysics to model the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements incorporate the so-called statistical model in order to describe the excitation and decay ...properties of atomic nuclei. One of the basic assumptions of this model is the validity of the Brink–Axel hypothesis and the related concept of so-called photon strength functions to describe γ-ray transition probabilities. We present a novel experimental approach that allows for the first time to experimentally determine the photon strength function simultaneously in two independent ways by a unique combination of quasi-monochromatic photon beams and a newly implemented γ–γ coincidence setup. This technique does not assume a priori the validity of the Brink–Axel hypothesis and sets a benchmark in terms of the detection sensitivity for measuring decay properties of photo-excited states below the neutron separation energy. The data for the spherical off-shell nucleus 128Te were obtained for γ-ray beam-energy settings between 3 MeV and 9 MeV in steps of 130 keV for the lower beam energies and in steps of up to 280 keV for the highest beam settings. We present a quantitative analysis on the consistency of the derived photon strength function with the Brink–Axel hypothesis. The data clearly demonstrate a discrepancy of up to a factor of two between the photon strength functions extracted from the photoabsorption and photon emission process, respectively. In addition, we observe that the photon strength functions are not independent of the excitation energy, as usually assumed. Thus, we conclude, that the Brink–Axel hypothesis is not strictly fulfilled in the excitation-energy region below the neutron separation threshold (Sn=8.78MeV) for the studied case of 128Te.

In view of the great interest in liquid argon neutrino detectors, the 40Ar(γ,γ')40Ar reaction was revisited to guide a calculation of the neutral current neutrino cross section at supernova energies. ...Using the nuclear resonance fluorescence technique with a monoenergetic, 99% linearly polarized photon beam, in this work we report a three-fold increase in magnetic dipole strength at around 10 MeV in 40Ar. Based on shell-model calculations, and using the experimentally identified transitions, the neutral current neutrino cross sections for low-energy reactions on 40Ar are calculated.

Recent experimental results are presented for reactions involving A = 3 to A = 6 nuclear systems. The emphasis is on unique data obtained at new experimental facilities. It is shown that the inertial ...confinement fusion facilities OMEGA and NIF provide a largely unexpected opportunity for experimental few-body physics to both obtain data of unprecedented quality and extend previous measurements to energies not accessible in the past. Whenever possible, data are compared to state-of-the-art theoretical calculations.

We report the most precise determination of the S01 neutron-neutron effective range parameter (rnn) from neutron-neutron quasifree scattering in neutron-deuteron breakup. The experiment setup ...utilized a collimated beam of 15.5 MeV neutrons and an array of eight neutron detectors positioned at angles sensitive to several quasifree scattering kinematic configurations. The two neutrons emitted from the breakup reaction were detected in coincidence and time-of-flight techniques were used to determine their energies. The beam-target luminosity was measured in-situ with the yields from neutron-deuteron elastic scattering. Rigorous Faddeev-type calculations using the CD Bonn nucleon-nucleon potential were fit to our cross-section data to determine the value of rnn. The analysis was repeated using a semilocal momentum-space regularized N4LO+ chiral interaction potential. We obtained values of rnn=2.86±0.01(stat)±0.10(sys) fm and rnn=2.87±0.01(stat)±0.10(sys) fm using the CD Bonn and N4LO+ potentials, respectively. Our results are consistent with charge symmetry and previously reported values of rnn.

High-sensitivity studies of E1 and M1 transitions observed in the reaction 138Ba(gamma,gamma{'}) at energies below the one-neutron separation energy have been performed using the nearly monoenergetic ...and 100% linearly polarized photon beams of the HIgammaS facility. The electric dipole character of the so-called "pygmy" dipole resonance was experimentally verified for excitations from 4.0 to 8.6 MeV. The fine structure of the M1 "spin-flip" mode was observed for the first time in N=82 nuclei.

Two samples, one of natural iridium and the other of enriched 193Ir, were irradiated with a monoenergetic neutron beam of energy 6.0 MeV at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory. The product ...of the 193Ir(n,n′)193mIr reaction was determined by means of measuring X-rays following electron conversion of the isomeric state at 80.2 keV in 193Ir. The cross section for inelastic neutron scattering is reported disagreeing with the literature data.

The neutron radiative-capture cross section of 76Ge was measured between 0.4 and 14.8 MeV using the activation technique. Germanium samples with the isotopic abundance of ∼86%Ge76 and ∼14%Ge74 used ...in the 0νββ searches by the GERDA and Majorana Collaborations were irradiated with monoenergetic neutrons produced at eleven energies via the H3(p,n)He3, H2(d,n)He3 and H3(d,n)He4 reactions. Previously, data existed only at thermal energies and at 14 MeV. As a by-product, capture cross-section data were also obtained for 74Ge at neutron energies below 8 MeV. Indium and gold foils were irradiated simultaneously for neutron fluence determination. High-resolution γ-ray spectroscopy was used to determine the γ-ray activity of the daughter nuclei of interest. For the 76Ge total capture cross section the present data are in good agreement with the TENDL-2013 model calculations and the ENDF/B-VII.1 evaluations, while for the Ge74(n,γ)Ge75 reaction, the present data are about a factor of two larger than predicted. It was found that the Ge74(n,γ)Ge75 yield in the High-Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors used by the GERDA and Majorana Collaborations is only about a factor of two smaller than the Ge76(n,γ)Ge77 yield due to the larger cross section of the former reaction.

A program is underway at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) to measure the neutron capture cross section in the 0.5 to 15 MeV energy range on nuclei whose radioactive daughters could ...potentially create backgrounds in searches for rare events. Here, we refer to neutrino-less double-beta decay and dark-matter searches, and to detectors built for neutrino and/or antineutrino studies. Neutron capture cross-section data obtained by using the activation method are reported for 40Ar, 74,76Ge, 128,130Te and 136Xe and compared to model calculations and evaluations.

Our results are compared to the evaluation ENDF/B-VII.1 and the calculated prediction TENDL-2013. The latter agrees very well with the present results.
