Objective: Placental pathology assists in characterizing the antenatal environment and may provide information about the baby's subsequent development. We aim to assess whether histological patterns ...of placenta are associated with an increased risk of perinatal diseases and to evaluate how different patterns of placental dysfunction can affect the neurodevelopmental outcome. Methods: We analyzed the histopathological characteristics of 105 singleton placentas from infants born between 23 and 31 weeks of gestation and we assessed pair-wise correlations with perinatal diseases. Estimated relative risks were calculated from odds ratios. Results: Histological chorioamnionitis (CA group) was detected on 51 of 100 placentas tested. Lesions of uteroplacental circulation (abruption, infarction or thrombosis, perivillous fibrin deposition, syncytial knots; vasculopathy group) were detected on 29. 25 normal placentas served as controls. The incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) was higher in CA than in control group. The risk of developing retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and PDA was higher in CA than in vasculopathy group. Conclusions: At low gestational age CA, rather than placental lesions of vasculopathy, negatively impacts perinatal outcome. Clinical significance of histologic vasculopathy remains questionable. Other pathophysiological mechanisms than those associated with placental changes may occur following dysfunction of uteroplacental circulation.
PURPOSEMarginal bone loss (MBL) is an important clinical issue in implant therapy. One feature that has been cited as a contributing factor to this bone loss is peri-implant mucosal thickness. ...Therefore, in this report, we conducted a systematic review of the literature comparing bone remodeling around implants placed in areas with thick (≥2-mm) vs. thin (<2-mm) mucosa. METHODSA PICO question was defined. Manual and electronic searches were performed of the MEDLINE/PubMed and Cochrane Oral Health Group databases. The inclusion criteria were prospective studies that documented soft tissue thickness with direct intraoperative measurements and that included at least 1 year of follow-up. When possible, a meta-analysis was performed for both the overall and subgroup analyses. RESULTSThirteen papers fulfilled the inclusion criteria. A meta-analysis of 7 randomized clinical trials was conducted. Significantly less bone loss was found around implants with thick mucosa than around those with thin mucosa (difference, -0.53 mm; P<0.0001). Subgroups were analyzed regarding the apico-coronal positioning, the use of platform-matched vs. platform-switched (PS) connections, and the use of cement-retained vs. screw-retained prostheses. In these analyses, thick mucosa was found to be associated with significantly less MBL than thin mucosa (P<0.0001). Among non-matching (PS) connections and screw-retained prostheses, bone levels were not affected by mucosal thickness. CONCLUSIONSSoft tissue thickness was found to be correlated with MBL except in cases of PS connections used on implants with thin tissues and screw-retained prostheses. Mucosal thickness did not affect implant survival or the occurrence of biological or aesthetic complications. Background
To evaluate and compare the long-term clinical and radiological outcomes of post-extraction sockets after ridge preservation either with porcine xenograft or collagen alone. Patients ...underwent single-tooth extraction in the posterior mandible. Fresh extraction sockets were filled with pre-hydrated cortico-cancellous porcine bone or collagen sponge. Two or 3 months later, a ridge expansion technique with immediate implant positioning placement was performed. Primary (alveolar width changes) and secondary outcomes (adverse events and long-term maintenance of buccal plate covering the implant) were evaluated.
Results
Thirty-four women and 20 men were selected: 30 implants (group A) placed into healed post-extraction sockets grafted with porcine bone and 24 (group B) into sockets filled with a collagen sponge. There was a significant loss in width in both groups from the first and second surgery (ranging between 2.7 mm and 4.5 mm). The ridge splitting with bone expansion resulted in significant long-term increases in width for both procedures and implant sites. Non-significant differences in alveolar width were registered between the groups at 10-year follow-up even if the analysis of the implant buccal bone coverage suggested that group A had significantly worst results.
Conclusions
Porcine bone group had significantly better short-term outcomes with lower long-term maintenance of the buccal plate.
Tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated protein 1 (TRAP1) is a heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) molecular chaperone upregulated in several human malignancies and involved in protection from apoptosis ...and drug resistance, cell cycle progression, cell metabolism and quality control of specific client proteins. TRAP1 role in thyroid carcinoma (TC), still unaddressed at present, was investigated by analyzing its expression in a cohort of 86 human TCs and evaluating its involvement in cancer cell survival and proliferation in vitro. Indeed, TRAP1 levels progressively increased from normal peritumoral thyroid gland, to papillary TCs (PTCs), follicular variants of PTCs (FV-PTCs) and poorly differentiated TCs (PDTCs). By contrast, anaplastic thyroid tumors exhibited a dual pattern, the majority being characterized by high TRAP1 levels, while a small subgroup completely negative. Consistently with a potential involvement of TRAP1 in thyroid carcinogenesis, TRAP1 silencing resulted in increased sensitivity to paclitaxel-induced apoptosis, inhibition of cell cycle progression and attenuation of ERK signaling. Noteworthy, the inhibition of TRAP1 ATPase activity by pharmacological agents resulted in attenuation of cell proliferation, inhibition of ERK signaling and reversion of drug resistance. These data suggest that TRAP1 inhibition may be regarded as potential strategy to target specific features of human TCs, i.e., cell proliferation and resistance to apoptosis.

The simulation of a distorted radiograph of a blade positioned in space was compared with the real radiograph. Differences in the angular measurements served as an initial test to assess the effectiveness of the method.
Results

To introduce a theoretical solution to a posteriori describe the pose of a cylindrical dental fixture as appearing on radiographs; to experimentally validate the method described.
The pose of a ...conventional dental implant was described by a triplet of angles (phi-pitch, theta-roll, and psi-yaw) which was calculated throughout vector analysis. Radiographic- and simulated-image obtained with an algorithm were compared to test effectiveness, reproducibility, and accuracy of the method. The length of the dental implant as appearing on the simulated image was calculated by the trigonometric function and then compared with real length as it appeared on a two-dimensional radiograph.
Twenty radiographs were analyzed for the present in silico and retrospective study. Among 40 fittings, 37 resulted as resolved with residuals ≤ 1 mm. Similar results were obtained for radiographic and simulated implants with absolute errors of - 1.1° ± 3.9° for phi; - 0.9° ± 4.1° for theta; 0° ± 1.1° for psi. The real and simulated length of the implants appeared to be heavily correlated. Linear dependence was verified by the results of the robust linear regression: 0.9757 (slope), + 0.1344 mm (intercept), and an adjusted coefficient of determination of 0.9054.
The method allowed clinicians to calculate, a posteriori, a single real triplet of angles (phi, theta, psi) by analyzing a two-dimensional radiograph and to identify cases where standardization of repeated intraoral radiographies was not achieved. The a posteriori standardization of two-dimensional radiographs could allowed the clinicians to minimize the patient's exposure to ionizing radiations for the measurement of marginal bone levels around dental implants.
The aim of the present retrospective chart review was to analyze by Computed Tomography (CT) scan technique the degree of maxillomandibular atrophies, searching for differences between totally- and ...partially-edentulous subjects, and possibly identify and classify maxillomandibular atrophy staged patterns for implant planning in both totally- and partially- edentulous jaws.
CT scans of 89 mandibles and 77 maxillae from 111 patients were classified according to six different patterns of residual ridge resorption and to two different groups of edentulism (totally- and partially-edentulous). Maxillomandibular absolute linear dimensions were calculated and results compared for statistically significant differences by Wilcoxon tests.
Maxillomandibular CT cross-section interpretation showed different patterns of linear bone remodelling (height values) between the two groups of edentulism joined with specific positions in the maxilla or mandible. The judgment of the investigator was uncertain in the analysis of the mandibular posterior areas with similar percentages for both totally- and partially-edentulous groups (12.5% and 11.5%, respectively).
The 3D analysis is self-explanatory and easy to apply, aided by CT scans. The measurements between the referring planes and inviolable anatomical structures (nasal floor NFD, lower border of mandible LBD, inferior alveolar nerve AND, and sinus floor SFD), showed that class III may not guarantee an optimal implant placement, especially in the totally-edentulous group, due to a major degree of pneumatisation.

Objectives

Materials and methods

) were measured; outcome variables described survival rate and marginal bone resorption (MBR) around dental implants in autogenous grafts (10 maxillae and 14 mandibles). Pairwise comparisons and linear correlation coefficient were computed.
Results
The peri-implant MBR in maxillary buccal and palatal areas appeared less intensive in the presence of an increased angulation of an implant towards the palatal side. Minor MBR was recorded around mandibular dental implants positioned at a right angle and slightly angulated towards the mesial.
Conclusions
Resorption in buccal areas may be less intensive as the angulation of placed implants increases towards the palatal area in the maxilla, whereas for the mandible, a greater inclination towards the lingual area could be negative. In the mandibular group, when the implant was slightly angulated in the direction of the distal area, bone resorption seemed to be more marked in the buccal area.
Clinical relevance
In the planning of dental implant placement in reconstructed alveolar bone with autograft, the extremely unfavourable resorption at the buccal aspect should be considered; this marginal bone loss seemed to be very sensitive to the angulation of the dental implant.

Objective To investigate the presence of Raf kinase inhibitor protein (RKIP) in human myometrium and leiomyoma as well as to determine the effect of locostatin (RKIP inhibitor) on extracellular ...matrix (ECM) production, proliferation, and migration in human myometrial and leiomyoma cells. Design Laboratory study. Setting Human myometrium and leiomyoma. Patient(s) Thirty premenopausal women who were admitted to the hospital for myomectomy or hysterectomy. Intervention(s) Myometrial and leiomyoma tissues were used to investigate the localization and the expression level of RKIP through immunohistochemistry and Western blotting. Myometrial and leiomyoma cells were treated with locostatin (10 μM) to measure ECM expression by real-time polymerase chain reaction, GSK3β expression by Western blotting, cell migration by wound-healing assay, and cell proliferation by MTT assay and immunocytochemistry. Main Outcome Measure(s) The expression of RKIP in human myometrial and leiomyoma tissue; ECM components and GSK3β expression, migration, and proliferation in myometrial and leiomyoma cells. Result(s) RKIP is expressed in human myometrial and leiomyoma tissue. Locostatin treatment resulted in the activation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signal pathway (ERK phosphorylation), providing a powerful validation of our targeting protocol. Further, RKIP inhibition by locostatin reduces ECM components. Moreover, the inhibition of RKIP by locostatin impaired cell proliferation and migration in both leiomyoma and myometrial cells. Finally, locostatin treatment reduced GSK3β expression. Therefore, even if the activation of MAPK pathway should increase proliferation and migration, the destabilization of GSK3β leads to the reduction of proliferation and migration of myometrial and leiomyoma cells. Conclusion(s) Our results indicate that RKIP may be involved in leiomyoma pathophysiology.

The aim of the present in vitro study was to evaluate fatigue resistance of dental fixtures in three different types of fixture/abutment finishing line.
Transmucosal dental implants, with or without ...ferrulized neck, underwent fatigue tests (static and dynamic load) using the following standard protocol: UNI EN ISO 14801:2016. Two types of loading devices (screw- or cement-retained restoration) were also tested, and fatigue cycle tests were run to failure. Data of static and dynamic load tests were analyzed by proper statistical methods.
Following standard protocol for fatigue testing, the ILC type (Implant Level with ferrulized neck and cement-retained crown) showed a non-significant but higher Ultimate Failure Load (UFL = 445.7 N) compared to AL type (Abutment Level without ferrule effect, 421.6 N) and ILS type (Implant Level with ferrulized neck and Screw-retained crown, 362.8 N). No fracture of the titanium-base was registered in the tested specimens during the static loadings. Permanent deformations of the materials were observed.
The number of cycles to either fracture or deformation (higher than 4 mm) occurring during fatigue tests showed that the stress rupture curve of the materials in group ILS appeared to be significantly different from those of the ILC and AL groups (p-values < 0.01): much higher life of one-half order of magnitude.
