What is left of socialism ? This question, too, must be answered in a "project left." Certainly, socialism is no longer an accomplished or well-known model of society to tend tothrough daily ...political action. It can only be conceived as an uninterrupted search for the liberation of the person and his capacity for self-realization. It should be possible introducing elements of socialism into concrete society such as: equal opportunities, community welfare, control over the organization of work, the diffusion of knowledge as an instrument of freedom. This would overcome, from time to time, the contradictions and failures of capitalism and the market economy, making the person, and not only the classes, the keystone of civil coexistence. A consideration of the policies of Italian unions (IU's), visa-vis the most pressing problems facing them today: widespread chronic unemployment, the pluralism of IU's, increased technological ...progress, & the underdevelopment of the south. IU policy has taken 2 paths since 1948: (1) towards policies concerned simply with compensation for the 'socially negative consequences of technological & org'al changes,' which restricts IU policies to the factory level, re general econ & pol problems, & (2) towards accepting responsibility for improving the larger problem of unemployment, through IU actions geared to the nat'l level as well as the individual firm. 2 areas of IU policy closely linked to the repercussions of technical progress are: (A) salary policy on the factory level, & (B) negotiation re the professional classification of workers. It is proposed, on the basis of previous & on-going practices, that IU's adopt a policy of claims which, to be effective, will influence manag, & which will clear the way for an econ program on the regional & nat'l levels. D'après l'expérience de la C.G.I.L., une action revendicative efficace suppose qu'on influence la gestion des entreprises, et elle doit déboucher dans un programme économique régional et national.
