Two hundred and forty-one patients were treated with radical hysterectomy at our institution between 1949 and December, 1978. The corrected 5-year survival rate for all patients with squamous cell ...carcinoma of the cervix was 73%. Seventeen percent of patients with occult invasive carcinoma had positive lymph nodes at the time of operation. The corrected 5-year survival rate for patients with Stage IB carcinoma who had positive nodes was 66%. Operations for recurrent or persistent disease after radiotherapy resulted in a 5-year survival rate of 54%. Current indications for radical hysterectomy and lymphadenectomy at our center are discussed.
The scintillation photon detection and event selection subsystem for the high spatial resolution Donner 600-channel positron emission tomograph is described. The tomograph spatial resolution of ...better than 3.0 mm, FWHM, is obtained by using 600 closely-packed bismuth germanate 3 mm thick scintillation detectors. Each detector has its own 13.5 mm diameter photomultiplier and event selection channel, consisting of two fast pulse amplifiers, a charge integrator, a differential pulse height discriminator and precision time delay for event strobing. The event selection channel is capable of starting a timing cycle from the first photoelectron emitted from the photocathode. It is also capable of discriminating between true events and noise and of eliminating events occurring simultaneously in two adjacent channels. Adjustments of the event strobing time and two discriminator levels are performed by a computer.
The entropy production occurring in relativistic hydrodynamical systems such as the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formed in high-energy nuclear collisions is explored. We study mechanisms which change the ...composition of the fluid, i.e. particle production and/or chemical reactions, along with chemo- and thermo-diffusion. These effects complement the conventional dissipative effects of shear viscosity, bulk viscosity, and heat conductivity.
We present experimental results on inclusive spectra and mean multiplicities of negatively charged pions produced in inelastic p+p interactions at incident projectile momenta of 20, 31, 40, 80 and ...158 GeV/c (\(\sqrt{s} = \) 6.3, 7.7, 8.8, 12.3 and 17.3 GeV, respectively). The measurements were performed using the large acceptance NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. Two-dimensional spectra are determined in terms of rapidity and transverse momentum. Their properties such as the width of rapidity distributions and the inverse slope parameter of transverse mass spectra are extracted and their collision energy dependences are presented. The results on inelastic p+p interactions are compared with the corresponding data on central Pb+Pb collisions measured by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. The results presented in this paper are part of the NA61/SHINE ion program devoted to the study of the properties of the onset of deconfinement and search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter. They are required for interpretation of results on nucleus-nucleus and proton-nucleus collisions.
A sensitive search for direct CP violation in Ξ
− (
Ξ
+) and Λ (
Λ
) decays is underway at FNAL. Experiment E871 (HyperCP) intends to perform a precision measurement of the angular distribution of ...protons (anti-protons) with respect to the helicity axis in the rest frame of the Λ (
Λ
). The slopes of these distributions give the decay parameters

. An asymmetry parameter
A in terms of these decay parameters has been defined for which a non-zero value would be unambiguous evidence for direct CP violation. Theoretical predictions for
A range from no asymmetry up to ∼ 10

−4.

A high-resolution linear TV camera is described for readout of phosphors illuminated by gated microchannel plate image intensifiers. The 2592-element array clocking scheme allows for simultaneous ...readout of even and odd pixels combined into a single photoelement. Improved signal-to-noise ratio results, exceeding 1000:1 for a single video time readout. The camera can be reset at any time and unwanted photocharge dumped. Integration time is adjustable to match phosphor decay time and clock rates exceeding 20 MHz allow for a fast readout. Measurements including resolution, responsitivity, and dynamic range of the camera alone and intensified are presented.< >
