SABRE (Sodium iodide with Active Background REjection) is a direct detection dark matter experiment based on arrays of radio-pure NaI(Tl) crystals. The experiment aims at achieving an ultra-low ...background rate and its primary goal is to confirm or refute the results from the DAMA/LIBRA experiment. The SABRE Proof-of-Principle phase was carried out in 2020–2021 at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS), in Italy. The next phase consists of two full-scale experiments: SABRE South at the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory, in Australia, and SABRE North at LNGS. This paper focuses on SABRE South and presents a detailed simulation of the detector, which is used to characterise the background for dark matter searches including DAMA/LIBRA-like modulation. We estimate an overall background of 0.72 cpd/kg/keVee in the energy range 1–6 keVee primarily due to radioactive contamination in the crystals. Given this level of background and considering that the SABRE South has a target mass of 50 kg, we expect to exclude (confirm) DAMA/LIBRA modulation at 4(5)σ within 2.5 years of data taking.

We present the novel implementation of a non-differentiable metric approximation and a corresponding loss-scheduling aimed at the search for new particles of unknown mass in high energy physics ...experiments. We call the loss-scheduling, based on the minimisation of a figure-of-merit related function typical of particle physics, a Punzi-loss function, and the neural network that utilises this loss function a Punzi-net. We show that the Punzi-net outperforms standard multivariate analysis techniques and generalises well to mass hypotheses for which it was not trained. This is achieved by training a single classifier that provides a coherent and optimal classification of all signal hypotheses over the whole search space. Our result constitutes a complementary approach to fully differentiable analyses in particle physics. We implemented this work using PyTorch and provide users full access to a public repository containing all the codes and a training example.

The Sodium iodide Active Background Rejection Experiment-South (SABRE-South) is a direct dark matter detector soon to be deployed in the Stawell gold mine, in Victoria, Australia. Monitoring of ...external environmental and experimental conditions, (temperature, barometric pressure, relative humidity, high voltage, and seismic vibration) is vital to ensure the data quality of the SABRE search for dark matter via direct detection. These parameters are generally non-time-critical in the range of Hz to a few kHz and constitute a slow control system. We present the design of a novel compact, industrial-grade, and self-contained slow control system for SABRE-South. This system, featuring innovative hardware and software architecture based on National instruments compact RIO (NI-cRIO) and LabVIEW can be scaled up at low-cost and is capable of implementing the functionalities available in high-end SCADA systems while maintaining the flexibility to integrate custom software code (i.e. C++, PYTHON) for bespoke interfacing needs.
A new resonance-tracking (RT) method using fast frequency sweeping excitation was developed for quantitative scanning probe microscopy (SPM) imaging. This method allows quantitative imaging of ...elastic properties and ferroelectrical domains with nanoscale resolution at high data acquisition rates. It consists of a commercial AFM system combined with a high-frequency lock-in amplifier, a programmed function generator and a fast data acquisition card. The resonance-tracking method was applied to the atomic force acoustic microscopy (AFAM) and to the piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) modes. Plots of amplitude versus time and phase versus time for resonant spectra working with different sweeping frequencies were obtained to evaluate the response speed of the lock-in amplifier. It was proved that this resonance-tracking method allows suitable spectral acquisition at a rate of about 5 ms pixel, which is useful for SPM imaging in a practical scanning time. In order to demonstrate the system performance, images of RT-AFAM for TiN films and RT-PFM for GeTe are shown.

We present the synthesis and characterization ofmagnetite-maghemite nanoparticles obtained by mechanical milling of sub micrometric hematite in presence of polyethylene glycol (PEG) as stabilizing medium. Nanoparticles were obtained in a milling time of 24 h, being their aggregation and particle size distribution less than those obtained by us in a previous work employing a mixture of hematite and deionized water as precursor material.X-ray and room temperature Mössbauer measurements confirmed that milling products are composed only by thephases magnetite-maghemite. TEM micrographs showed quasi-spherical particles with low aggregation andmean diameteraround 14 nm. Room temperature magnetization loops are consistent withferrimagnetic multi domain nanoparticles, with saturation magnetization around 62 A m2 kg−1 and coercive field around 10.2 kA m−1. The results suggest that mechanical milling in presence of polyethylene glycol is a simple and efficient route to produce magnetite-maghemite nanoparticles with good magnetization, which can be useful for applications in nanotechnology.

), while for wet milling, we mixed hematite and deionized water. Milling products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, room temperature Mössbauer spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, and atomic absorption spectroscopy. The Mössbauer spectrum of the dry milling product was well fitted with two sextets of hematite, while the spectrum of the wet milling product was well fitted with three sextets of spinel phase. X-ray measurements confirmed the phases identified by Mössbauer spectroscopy in both milling conditions and a reduction in the crystallinity of the dry milling product. TEM measurements showed that the products of dry milling for 100 h and wet milling for 24 h consist of aggregates of nanoparticles distributed in size, with mean particle size of 10 and 15 nm, respectively. Magnetization measurements of the wet milling product showed little coercivity and a saturation magnetization around 69 emu g
−1
, characteristic of a nano-spinel system. Atomic absorption measurements showed that the chromium contamination in the wet milling product is approximately two orders of magnitude greater than that found in the dry milling product for 24 h, indicating that the material of the milling bodies, liberated more widely in wet conditions, plays an important role in the conversion hematite-spinel phase.

This article summarizes the status of the global fit of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) parameters within the Standard Model performed by the CKMfitter group. Special attention is paid to the ...inputs for the CKM angles alpha and gamma and the status of Bs arrow right mu mu and Bd arrow right mu mu decays. We illustrate the current situation for other unitarity triangles. We also discuss the constraints on generic Delta F = 2 new physics. All results have been obtained with the CKMfitter analysis package, featuring the frequentist statistical approach and using RFIT to handle theoretical uncertainties.
