Designing catalysts that are environmentally friendly and biodegradable is increasingly gaining importance. This aligns with the principles of green chemistry and contributes to minimizing the environmental impact of catalytic processes. These advances, taken as a whole, lead to more sustainable and efficient processes in industries ranging from energy production to pollutant removal, fueling the advancement toward a more sustainable future. Photochemistry, that is, the activation of a stable compound (catalyst) into the highly reactive excited state, is of particular importance, since photons—especially when they come from solar light—are a green and renewable resource. This review article has provided the overall idea of the photocatalysts and materials under green chemistry perspective from the standpoint of the concept of sustainable development.

Some tungsten catalysts of interest that are synthesized are bismuth tungstate (BT) and Tetrabutylammonium decatungstate (TBADT), using two consolidated procedures. BT is used as a photo-catalyst for ...the simulated solar light degradation of ofloxacin (OFL) antibiotic under relevant real conditions (µg L−1, fresh water) with the limit of 0.05 g L−1 of catalyst. A quantitative drug decomposition occurred following a bi-exponential first-order law, with an efficiency comparable with the most used P25 TiO2 catalyst. The photocatalytic profiles of OFL at µg L−1 and mg L−1 were monitored by high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with fluorescence (FD) and ultraviolet (UV) detectors. Additionally, the main photoproducts were identified by high-pressure liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization in tandem with mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS). The catalyst Tetrabutylammonium decatungstate (TBADT) was used as a catalyst to produce hydrogen from glucose and 2-propanol in aqueous solution, providing hydrogen gas evolution up to 10 µmol g−1 h−1.

The article describes a carbon-based material for solid-phase extraction (SPE) of fluoroquinolones from waters. It was obtained by pyrolytic deposition of Kraft lignin (LG) on silica particles. ...Marbofloxacin (MAR) and enrofloxacin (ENR) were chosen as model contaminants. The material was prepared by first adsorbing LG onto silica microparticles, this followed by pyrolytic treatment at 1200 °C for 2 h. Silica-supported carbon was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, surface area measurement (by BET), thermogravimetric analysis, and electron paramagnetic resonance. The carbon-coated silica particles were then tested as a column packing for SPE of MAR and ENR from spiked tap and river waters. Quantitative adsorption was observed at pH values of ~7.5 for both drugs. They were eluted with a 70:30 mixture of aqueous tetrabutylammonium hydroxide and acetonitrile and then quantified by HPLC coupled to fluorescence detection. Samples spiked with MAR and ENR in the range from 10 to 1000 ng·L
−1
gave recoveries ranging from 70 to 116% (for
n
= 3). Good inter-day precision (with RSDs between 7 and 16%) was observed for 20–1000 ng·L
−1
spikes, also in natural river water. Sample volumes up to 500 mL provided enrichment factors up to 125, and this makes this material useful for determination of the two drugs at environmentally significant levels which are as low as a few ng·L
−1
. The batch-to-batch reproducibility was verified for 3 preparations. The sorbent was successfully applied to the determination of these drugs in environmental waters.

This research investigated the suitability of air-to-water generator (AWG) technology to address one of the main concerns in green hydrogen production, namely water supply. This study specifically ...addresses water quality and energy sustainability issues, which are crucial research questions when AWG technology is intended for electrolysis. To this scope, a reasoned summary of the main findings related to atmospheric water quality has been provided. Moreover, several experimental chemical analyses specifically focused on meeting electrolysis process requirements, on water produced using a real integrated AWG system equipped with certified materials for food contact, were discussed. To assess the energy sustainability of AWGs in green hydrogen production, a case study was presented regarding an electrolyzer plant intended to serve as energy storage for a 2 MW photovoltaic field on Iriomote Island. The integrated AWG, used for the water quality analyses, was studied in order to determine its performance in the specific island climate conditions. The production exceeded the needs of the electrolyzer; thus, the overproduction was considered for the panels cleaning due to the high purity of the water. Due to such an operation, the efficiency recovery was more than enough to cover the AWG energy consumption. This paper, on the basis of the quantity results, provides the first answers to the said research questions concerning water quality and energy consumption, establishing the potential of AWG as a viable solution for addressing water scarcity, and enhancing the sustainability of electrolysis processes in green hydrogen production.

The use of 3D printing began to diffuse in the pharmaceutical field in recent times, since 2015, with the approval of the first 3D printed drug from the FDA. The most used materials in association ...with this technique in this specific scope are hydrogels, already used widely in tissue engineering to produce scaffolds used in the realization of synthetic tissues. The aim of this project was to study the influence of different pH conditions on the release of a therapeutic molecule from a Carrageenan-k combined with alginate or xanthan gum hydrogel with a high level of biocompatibility and enough mechanical resistance to be used as printing material for a 3D bioprinter. The addition of biologically active supplements without affecting the model of the 3D printing structure of the biocompatible polymers was achieved by adopting the extrusion at moderately low temperatures. This study aimed to produce the necessary percentage of hydrogels which is responsible for the release of active drugs which respect to the pH of the system. In this case, the chosen curcumin drug which exhibits active release in the pH of the small intestine is a pH value of 6.

This article outlines the design and performance of a flue gas condensation system integrated with a biomass combustion plant. The system comprises a biomass plant fuelled by wood chips, generating ...flue gases. These gases are condensed via a double heat exchanger set-up, extracting water and heat to reduce concentrations of CO, CO2, and NOx while releasing gases at a temperature close to ambient temperature. The 100 kW biomass plant operates steadily, consuming 50 kg of wood chips per hour with fuel energy of 18.98 MJ/kg. Post combustion, the gases exit at 430 °C and undergo two-stage cooling. In the first stage, gases are cooled in a high-temperature tube heat exchanger, transferring heat to air. They then enter the second stage, a flue gas/water heat exchanger, recovering sensible and latent thermal energy, which leads to water condensation. Flue gas is discharged at approximately 33 °C. Throughout, parameters like the flue gas temperatures, mass flow, fuel consumption, heat carrier temperatures, and water condensation rates were monitored. The test results show that the system can condense water from flue gas at 75 g/min at 22 °C while reducing pollutant emissions by approximately 20% for CO2, 19% for CO, 30% for NO, and 26% for NOx.
