This article examines the role played by 'feeling' (Gefühl) and 'love' within the philosophy of German Romanticism. After an introduction (I) to the actual debate on German Romanticism, paragraph II ...sketches an analysis of the concept of Gefühl at the end of the eighteenth century and highlights the differences with its actual meaning. The successive three sections are dedicated to three pivotal figures of German Romanticism: F. Schlegel (III), Novalis (IV), and Baader (V). Similarities and differences between these authors will be emphasized. It will be demonstrated that they deny the reason˗feeling opposition, and that 'feeling' and 'love' are at the heart of their ontology, epistemology, and conception of subjectivity, conditioning the Romantic human-nature relationship and Romantic political philosophy. In the concluding remarks (VI), this paper explains how German Romanticism can still help to better understand the role of feelings in politics.

This article focuses on Novalis’ understanding of the ‘I-nature’ relationship demonstrating that he anticipates some aspects developed by later environmental and ecological philosophies. After an ...introductory part on Novalis’ criticism against Fichte’s conception of the Self, the article investigates the crucial role played by Spinoza for the reassessment of natural sciences (physiology in particular) in Novalis’ philosophy and, as a consequence, for the conception of a “metaphysics of Having”. This particular metaphysics implies that subjects and objects interpenetrate each other, and that this relationship precedes their respective identities. In the last part, the article sketches a parallel with the current philosophical debate on ecology.
In this paper the author focuses on the reflections of Friedrich Schlegel (considered the first philosopher of the German Romantics) on the concept of history. The works considered here range from ...1798 to 1805 and include Schlegel’s essays, lessons, personal notes and fragments. In those years the reflections on the plurality of stories (Geschichten) and genealogies against the singularity of History (Geschichte) are central. “History” will emerge as a regulatory ideal of the narrative, but also of praxis. This paper will also show the limits of Koselleck’s analysis of Schlegel’s thought.

Le opere trattate vanno dal 1798 al 1805 e ...comprendono i suoi saggi, lezioni, appunti personali e frammenti. Negli anni considerati è centrale la considerazione della pluralità delle storie (Geschichten) e delle genealogie di contro alla storia (Geschichte) come singolare collettivo, ideale regolativo della narrazione e della prassi. Nel saggio svolgono un ruolo portante le analisi di Koselleck su Schlegel, da cui il presente saggio tende a distanziarsi.
This article focuses on Bettina Brentano-von Arnim's political philosophy and argues against the traditional view that the feminine is extraneous to the political sphere. The introduction begins with ...some methodological reflections on the status of the feminist history of philosophy. Then the article provides a summary of the role that women had to play according to the male philosophers of Frühromantik. In the third part, the author focuses on a number of concepts underpinning von Arnim's political philosophy-'law' and 'equality' in particular. It attempts to demonstrate the originality of her political philosophy and highlight its link with the modern philosophical-political tradition. The article concludes by examining the relationship between self-government and the government of others as outlined by the philosopher.
In this article I focus on the concept of habit in Kant’s philosophy. First of all, I concentrate on the criticisms he delineates against Gewohnheit in his epistemological and moral philosophy. In ...particular, habit is seen as absence of moral freedom. This conclusion is pretty different from Kant’s position expressed in his Anthropology From the Pragmatic Point of View and in the last part of theConflict of the Faculties. After a deep insight on the different terms referred to the conceptual field of habit, I focus on the relation between Gewohnheit and desire: in fact, Kant recognized that habit is not the mere repetition of an act, but more precisely it is the desire of repetition. That is why it is not strictly bonded to the deterministic world and it does not refer to machines: only the living beings may have habits. This way, it is possible to understand its role within the theme of health: in the reflections on dietetics, habit is particularly useful. The last part of the article is devoted to the new perspective on Kantian political philosophy opened by this positive view on this concept.
RESUMEN En este artículo me centro en el concepto de hábito en la filosofía de Kant. En primer lugar, me enfoco en las críticas que él delinea contra Gewohnheit en su filosofía epistemológica y moral. En particular, el hábito es visto como ausencia de libertad moral. Esta conclusión es bastante diferente a la posición expresada por Kant en su Antropología en sentido pragmático y en la última parte de El conflicto de las facultades. Tras profundizar sobre los diferentes términos referidos al campo conceptual del hábito, me concentro en la relación entre Gewohnheit y deseo: de hecho, Kant reconoció que el hábito no es una mera repetición de un acto, sino, más precisamente, es el deseo de repetición. Es por esto que no está estrictamente ligado al mundo determinista y no se refiere a máquinas: solo los seres vivos podrían tener hábitos. De esta forma, es posible comprender su rol en el tema de la salud: en la reflexión sobre dietética, el hábito es particularmente útil. La última parte del artículo está consagrada a la nueva perspectiva en la filosofía política kantiana abierta por esta visión positiva de este concepto.

The chapter discusses the contributions to idealism and romanticism made by Caroline Schlegel-Schelling, Dorothea Veit-Schlegel, Sophie Schubart-Mereau, Sophie Tieck, Karoline von Günderrode, ...Dorothea Tieck, and Bettina Brentano von Arnim. The authors will consider these women’s contributions to political philosophy, to philosophy of nature, to romantic translation theory, and to the idea of self. The chapter starts with Mereau’s, Veit’s, Sophie Tieck’s, and Caroline Schlegel-Schelling’s critiques of Fichte’s self-positing self in favor of a conception of self as relational, affective, and linguistic. The chapter then focuses on the role of Caroline Schlegel-Schelling and Dorothea Tieck in the German translation of Shakespeare’s plays and their translation theory. The third section focuses on the relation between love, birth, and death in Schlegel-Schelling, and the role that this relation plays in Günderrode’s philosophy of nature. The chapter closes with a discussion of the original contributions of Karoline von Günderrode and Bettina Brentano von Arnim in romantic political philosophy.
