Precisely how ecological factors influence animal social structure is far from clear. We explore this question using an agent-based model inspired by the fission-fusion society of spider monkeys ...(Ateles spp). Our model introduces a realistic, complex foraging environment composed of many resource patches with size varying as an inverse power law frequency distribution with exponent β. Foragers do not interact among them and start from random initial locations. They have either a complete or a partial knowledge of the environment and maximize the ratio between the size of the next visited patch and the distance traveled to it, ignoring previously visited patches. At intermediate values of β, when large patches are neither too scarce nor too abundant, foragers form groups (coincide at the same patch) with a similar size frequency distribution as the spider monkey's subgroups. Fission-fusion events create a network of associations that contains weak bonds among foragers that meet only rarely and strong bonds among those that repeat associations more frequently than would be expected by chance. The latter form subnetworks with the highest number of bonds and a high clustering coefficient at intermediate values of β. The weak bonds enable the whole social network to percolate. Some of our results are similar to those found in long-term field studies of spider monkeys and other fission-fusion species. We conclude that hypotheses about the ecological causes of fission-fusion and the origin of complex social structures should consider the heterogeneity and complexity of the environment in which social animals live.
To obtain a picture of the work done in Italian anatomical pathology centres in 2014, and evaluate differences between the various centres in terms of the workloads of medical and non-medical staff.
...A self-administered questionnaire designed by a SIAPEC working group was e-mailed to 256 centres and subsequently collected by the Anatomical Pathology Service of Bolzano. QlikView software was used to prepare the final database and check the quality of the data, which were processed using version 18.0 of SPSS for Windows statistical software.
The questionnaire was completed by 120 of the centres (46.9%), which were staffed by a mean number of 6.6 physicians (range 1-24), 1.6 biologists (range 0-7), 10.8 laboratory technicians (range 2-47) and 2.2 administrative personnel (range 0-9). During 2014, the centres carried out a mean of 15,000 histology examinations (range 3,215-50,680), almost 11,700 immunohistochemistry examinations (range 0-54,359), and a mean of 1,471 molecular biology examinations (range 0-31,322) relating to a mean of 704 patients (range 0-9,434), and a mean of 16,509 cytology examinations (range 0-150,000) relating to 13,383 patients (range 0-120,000). Each centre physician issued a mean of 2,444 histology examinations reports (range 613-11,000); the ratio between the number of immunohistochemistry examinations and the number of histology examinations was 0.8 (range 0-2.7); and each laboratory technician had a mean overall annual workload of 3,072 histology, molecular biology and cytology examinations (range 793-9,882/year). These values varied widely among the participating centres. The mean ratio between the number of histology examinations carried out and the number of physicians was 1,982.77:1 a year in the small centres (< 10,000 histology cases/year), 2,627:1 a year in the medium-sized centres (10-24,999 histology cases/year), and 2,881.34:1 in the large centres (> 25,000 histology cases/year). There were significant differences between the small and medium-sized centres (p = 0.004) and between the small and large centres (p = 0.001), but not between the medium-sized and large centres.
The ratio between the total number of histology, molecular biology and cytology examinations and the number of laboratory technicians was 1,963.34 in the small centres (< 10,000 examinations/year), 2,717.11 in the medium-sized centres (10,000-24,999 examinations/year), and 3,531.56 in the large centres (≥ 25,000 examinations/year). There were significant differences between the small and large centres (p = 0.001) and between the medium-sized and large centres (p = 0.004), but not between the small and medium-sized centres.
The data collected by means of this survey provide an important, albeit partial, point of reference concerning the status of Italian anatomical pathology centres and their recent, everyday working situation.
Abstract
Context and objectives. Synthetic cannabinoids are illegal drugs of abuse known to cause adverse neurologic and sympathomimetic effects. They are an emerging health risk: 11% of high school ...seniors reported smoking them during the previous 12 months. We describe the epidemiology of a toxicologic syndrome of acute kidney injury associated with synthetic cannabinoids, review the toxicologic and public health investigation of the cluster, and describe clinical implications of the cluster investigation. Materials and methods. Case series of nine patients affected by the toxicologic syndrome in Oregon and southwestern Washington during May-October 2012. Cases were defined as acute kidney injury (creatinine > 1.3 mg/dL) among persons aged 13-40 years without known renal disease who reported smoking synthetic cannabinoids. Toxicology laboratories used liquid chromatography and time-of-flight mass spectrometry to test clinical and product specimens for synthetic cannabinoids, their metabolites, and known nephrotoxins. Public health alerts informed clinicians, law enforcement, and the community about the cluster and the need to be alert for toxidromes associated with emerging drugs of abuse. Results. Patients were males aged 15-27 years (median, 18 years), with intense nausea and flank or abdominal pain, and included two sets of siblings. Peak creatinine levels were 2.6-17.7 mg/dL (median, 6.6 mg/dL). All patients were hospitalized; one required dialysis; none died. No alternate causes of acute kidney injury or nephrotoxins were identified. Patients reported easily purchasing synthetic cannabinoids at convenience, tobacco, and adult bookstores. One clinical and 2 product samples contained evidence of a novel synthetic cannabinoid, XLR-11 (1-(5-fluoropentyl)-1H-indol-3-yl(2,2,3,3-tetramethylcyclopropyl)methanone). Discussion and conclusion. Whether caused by direct toxicity, genetic predisposition, or an as-yet unidentified nephrotoxin, this association between synthetic cannabinoid exposure and acute kidney injury reinforces the need for vigilance to detect new toxicologic syndromes associated with emerging drugs of abuse. Liquid chromatography and time-of-flight mass spectrometry are useful tools in determining the active ingredients in these evolving products and evaluating them for toxic contaminants.

Based on several experiences of microbial release using genetically modified Rhizobium leguminosarum, we have highlighted a number of aspects related to the suitability of introduced markers such as ...resistance to mercury and β-galactosidase activity, the latter serving the function of high-expression level reporter gene obtained by the introduction of a synthetic promoter conferring strong inducible expression in Gram-negative bacteria. In vitro expression and in vivo performances of the chosen examples have been followed in model strains comparing gene dosage and expression levels. The technical possibility of unambiguously monitoring the marked GMM has been evaluated in medium- and long-term experiments carried out both in microcosms and soil, also including the presence of the plant symbiotic host. Marker stability, regardless the nature of the gene, was shown to be dependent on the location of the genetic modification and on its degree of gene expression regualtion. Reporter strength was found to be an advantage allowing the distinction of marker-bearing bacteria while negatively affecting their genetic stability. Plasmid-borne regulated reporters were found to be stable up to the stages of rhizosphere colonization, but were more critically selected against upon symbiotic host invasion.
Rhizomania is an extremely severe sugarbeet disease caused by the complex Polymyxa betae/Beet Necrotic Yellow Vein Virus (BNYVV). A relatively small number of recently introduced sugarbeet cultivars ...characterized by a high tolerance to rhizomania are available on the market. An integrated approach was therefore developed using Pseudomonas fluorescens biological control agents (BCAs) in order to improve yield performance of cultivars characterized by a medium tolerance to the disease. A genetically modified biological control agent, Pseudomonas fluorescens F113Rif (pCUGP), was developed for enhanced production of the antimicrobial metabolite 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (Phl) and lacking an antibiotic resistance marker gene, making the strain suitable for field release. The ability of synthetic Phl and P. fluorescens F113Rif (pCUGP) to antagonize the fungal vector, P. betae, was assessed in microcosm trials. Results encouraged the preparation of multiple field trials in a soil naturally infested with P. betae/BNYVV, to determine the biocontrol efficacy of P. fluorescens F113Rif (pCUGP) and to assess its impact on sugarbeet yield and quality and on the indigenous microbial population. While the colonization ability of P. fluorescens F113Rif (pCUGP) was satisfactory at sugarbeet emergence (2.5×10⁶ CFU g⁻¹ root), control of rhizomania was not achieved. Inoculation of sugarbeet with Pseudomonas fluorescens F113Rif (pCUGP) did not affect crop yield and quality nor affect the numbers of selected microbial populations.
Analysis of geographic variation for eight red cell markers in Italy shows significant spatial structure for most alleles. Effective population sizes estimated from FST values at these loci are much ...smaller than those predicted from data on consanguineous marriage, suggesting the presence of factors (presumably barriers) that have reduced gene flow and enhanced the evolutionary weight of genetic drift. Most regions of sharp gene frequency change correspond to geographic and linguistic barriers. Two allele frequencies are significantly correlated with measures of linguistic differentiation but not with indexes describing broad religious and social attitudes. The similarity between patterns of genetic and linguistic variation in Italy, also observed in a previous study, suggests that in specific areas linguistic diversity has acted as a biological barrier constraining mating, dispersal, or both. There is no evidence for a similar role of other extant cultural barriers.

Background: The increased sophistication of imaging techniques in veterinary medicine allows the detection of a wide variety of intracranial and intraspinal lesions; however, imaging often does not ...provide a definitive diagnosis for nervous system (NS) lesions. Cytology is emerging as a useful diagnostic tool for obtaining a fast and accurate assessment of NS lesions, but little information is available for dogs and cats. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy of cytologic evaluation of squash samples from NS lesions in dogs and cats and to consider cytology‐based diagnostic guidelines and sources of misdiagnosis. Methods: Cytologic specimens from masses localized in the central and peripheral NS taken during surgery or postmortem examination were classified into 3 groups according to the final histopathologic diagnosis: Group 1 = completely correct diagnosis, when the cytologic diagnosis and final histologic diagnosis were exactly correlated; Group 2 = partial correlation, when the cytologic diagnosis only partially correlated with the final histologic diagnosis, and Group 3 = no correlation, when the cytologic diagnosis was incorrect and there was no correlation with the general histologic type of lesion. The diagnostic accuracy of cytopathology was calculated by considering the histopathologic diagnosis as the “gold standard,” and calculating a 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: A total of 42 animals (33 dogs and 9 cats) were included in the study. The cytologic diagnoses were classified in Group 1 for 32 cases (76%; 95% CI 0.63–0.89), in Group 2 for 6 cases (14%; 95% CI 0.04–0.25), and in Group 3 for 4 cases (10%; 95% CI 0.006–0.18). Considering both complete and partial correlation as an adequate result, cytologic diagnosis was satisfactory in 90% of biopsies. Conclusions: Although the current series of cases is relatively small, cytologic evaluation of squash preparations can be considered a fairly accurate and reliable tool in the diagnosis of NS lesions.
