Summary
This is the first study to investigate the association between the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI)/serotonin–norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) and the risk of ...fractures using a nationwide representative cohort of ethnic Chinese. Current use of SSRI/SNRI and the co-morbidity, especially osteoporosis and history of falling, play an important role in the increased risk of fractures.
Introduction
This nested case–control study examines the association between the timing, intensity, and individual components of serotonergic antidepressant (including SSRIs and SNRIs) use and the risk of all-cause fracture.
Methods
Using the 2002–2011 Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, we identified patients who received at least three prescriptions of antidepressants between January 1st 2002 and December 31st 2010 as our study cohort. In the study cohort, we identify 8250 patients who had first admission for fracture and 33,000 matched controls (1:4, matched by age, sex, and cohort entry date). Multivariate conditional logistic regression was used to estimate the association between the use of serotonergic antidepressants and the risk of fracture.
Results
Current users of serotonergic antidepressants were associated with an increased risk of fracture (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 1.16 95 % confidence interval 1.07–1.25). Furthermore, a higher risk of fractures was found in patients with osteoporosis (aOR 3.05 2.73–3.42) or a history of falling (aOR 6.13 3.41–11.0). The risks of fracture between SSRI and SNRI users were comparable.
Conclusion
Current use of SSRI/SNRI is associated with an increased risk of all caused fractures. Additionally, the co-morbidity, especially osteoporosis and a history of falling, plays an important role in the risk of fractures.

Measurements of skeletal muscle cross-sectional area (SMA) at the level of the third lumbar (L3) vertebra derived from clinical computed tomography (CT) scans are commonly used in assessments of ...sarcopenia, the loss of skeletal muscle mass and function associated with aging. As SMA is correlated with height and Body Mass Index (BMI), body size adjustment is necessary to fairly assess sarcopenic low muscle mass in individuals of different height and BMI. The skeletal muscle index, a widely used measure, adjusts for height as Formula: see text but uses no BMI adjustment. There is no agreed upon standard for body size adjustment. We extracted L3 SMA using non-contrast-enhanced CT scans from healthy adults, split into 'Under-40' and 'Over-40' cohorts. Sex-specific allometric analysis showed that height to the power of one was the optimal integer coefficient for height adjusted SMA in both males and females. We computed two height-adjusted measures Formula: see text and Formula: see text, comparing their Pearson correlations versus age, height, weight, and BMI separately by sex and cohort. Finally, in the 'Under-40' cohort, we used linear regression to convert each height-adjusted measure into a z-score (Formula: see text, Formula: see text) adjusted for BMI. Formula: see text was less correlated with height in both males and females (Formula: see text, Formula: see text and Formula: see text, Formula: see text) than Formula: see text (Formula: see text and Formula: see text, Formula: see text). We propose Formula: see text for optimal height adjustment and the Formula: see text score for optimal height and BMI adjustment. By minimizing correlations with height and BMI, the Formula: see text score produces unbiased assessments of relative L3 skeletal muscle area across the full range of body sizes.

Summary Objective Chitosan has been widely used as an injectable scaffold in cartilage tissue engineering due to its characteristic biocompatibility and biodegradability. In this study, chitosan was ...used in its hydrogel form as a scaffold for chondrocytes that act to reconstruct tissue-engineered cartilage and repair articular cartilage defects in the sheep model. This study aims to find a novel way to apply chitosan in cartilage tissue engineering. Methods Temperature-responsive chitosan hydrogels were prepared by combining chitosan, β-sodium glycerophosphate (GP) and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC). Tissue-engineered cartilage reconstructions were made in vitro by mixing sheep chondrocytes with a chitosan hydrogel. Cell survival and matrix accumulation were analyzed after 3 weeks in culture. To collect data for in vivo repair, reconstructions cultured for 1 day were transplanted to the freshly prepared defects of the articular cartilage of sheep. Then at both 12 and 24 weeks after transplantation, the grafts were extracted and analyzed histologically and immunohistochemically. Results The results showed that the chondrocytes in the reconstructed cartilage survived and retained their ability to secrete matrix when cultured in vitro . Transplanted in vivo , the reconstructions repaired cartilage defects completely within 24 weeks. The implantation of chitosan hydrogels without chondrocytes also helps to repair cartilage defects. Conclusions The chitosan-based hydrogel could support matrix accumulation of chondrocytes and could repair sheep cartilage defects in 24 weeks. This study showcased the success of a new technique in its ability to repair articular cartilage defects.

Mechanical loading constantly acts on tendons, and a better understanding of its effects on the tendons is essential to gain more insights into tendon patho-physiology. This study aims to investigate ...tendon mechanobiological responses through the use of mouse treadmill running as an in vivo model and mechanical stretching of tendon cells as an in vitro model. In the in vivo study, mice underwent moderate treadmill running (MTR) and intensive treadmill running (ITR) regimens. Treadmill running elevated the expression of mechanical growth factors (MGF) and enhanced the proliferative potential of tendon stem cells (TSCs) in both patellar and Achilles tendons. In both tendons, MTR upregulated tenocyte-related genes: collagen type I (Coll. I ∼10 fold) and tenomodulin (∼3-4 fold), but did not affect non-tenocyte-related genes: LPL (adipocyte), Sox9 (chondrocyte), Runx2 and Osterix (both osteocyte). However, ITR upregulated both tenocyte (Coll. I ∼7-11 fold; tenomodulin ∼4-5 fold) and non-tenocyte-related genes (∼3-8 fold). In the in vitro study, TSCs and tenocytes were stretched to 4% and 8% using a custom made mechanical loading system. Low mechanical stretching (4%) of TSCs from both patellar and Achilles tendons increased the expression of only the tenocyte-related genes (Coll. I ∼5-6 fold; tenomodulin ∼6-13 fold), but high mechanical stretching (8%) increased the expression of both tenocyte (Coll. I ∼28-50 fold; tenomodulin ∼14-48 fold) and non-tenocyte-related genes (2-5-fold). However, in tenocytes, non-tenocyte related gene expression was not altered by the application of either low or high mechanical stretching. These findings indicate that appropriate mechanical loading could be beneficial to tendons because of their potential to induce anabolic changes in tendon cells. However, while excessive mechanical loading caused anabolic changes in tendons, it also induced differentiation of TSCs into non-tenocytes, which may lead to the development of degenerative tendinopathy frequently seen in clinical settings.

BACKGROUND: Digital treatment adherence technologies (DATs) have been recommended by the Chinese National Tuberculosis Programme since 2015. However, until now the extent to which DATs have been ...adopted in China remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to understand the current
status and future prospects of DAT use in China.METHODS: A cross-sectional study was undertaken to collect data from all 2,884 county-level TB-designated institutions across China using a quantitative questionnaire and extraction of information from the Chinese TB information management
system. Data were collected between 1 July 2020 and 30 June 2021.RESULTS: All of the 2,884 county-level TB-designated institutions responded to the questionnaire. We found that the utilisation rate of DATs in China was 21.5% (n = 620). Among those using DATs, the uptake of
DATs among TB patients was 31.0%. Lack of financial, policy and technology support were the main barriers to adoption and scale up DATs at the institution level.CONCLUSIONS: The use of DATs is in an early stage in China; however, the number of institutions who offer DATs have increased
significantly after July 2020. To facilitate the use of DATs, the national TB programme should provide more financial, policy and technology support, and a national guideline is required.
Boson sampling is a problem strongly believed to be intractable for classical computers, but can be naturally solved on a specialized photonic quantum simulator. Here, we implement the first ...time-bin-encoded boson sampling using a highly indistinguishable (∼94%) single-photon source based on a single quantum-dot-micropillar device. The protocol requires only one single-photon source, two detectors, and a loop-based interferometer for an arbitrary number of photons. The single-photon pulse train is time-bin encoded and deterministically injected into an electrically programmable multimode network. The observed three- and four-photon boson sampling rates are 18.8 and 0.2 Hz, respectively, which are more than 100 times faster than previous experiments based on parametric down-conversion.

This paper deals with an experimental and numerical study of the dynamics of an underwater explosion and its associated fluid–structure interaction. Experimental studies of the complex ...fluid–structure interaction phenomena were carried out in a specially designed test pond. The pond is equipped with a high-speed camera and pressure and displacement sensors. The high-speed camera was used to capture the expansion and collapse of the gas bubble created by the explosion. Several different structures were used in the experiments, including both rigid and resilient plates of circular shape. The deformation of the plate was measured with a non-contact laser telemetry device. The numerical simulations of the explosion bubble interacting with a submerged resilient structure were performed using a three-dimensional bubble dynamics code in conjunction with a structural code. The bubble code is based on the boundary-element method (BEM) and has been coupled to a structural finite-element code (PAM-CRASH$^{\rm TM})$. The experimental results were compared against the numerical results for different bubble–structure configurations and orientations. Several physical phenomena that have been observed, such as bubble jetting and bubble migration towards the structure are discussed.
The mitigation of air pollution in megacities remains a great challenge because of the complex sources and formation mechanisms of aerosol particles. The 2014 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) ...summit in Beijing serves as a unique experiment to study the impacts of emission controls on aerosol composition, size distributions, and oxidation properties. Herein, a high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer was deployed in urban Beijing for real-time measurements of size-resolved non-refractory submicron aerosol (NR-PM1) species from 14 October to 12 November 2014, along with a range of collocated measurements. The average (±σ) PM1 was 41.6 (±38.9) μg m−3 during APEC, which was decreased by 53 % compared with that before APEC. The aerosol composition showed substantial changes owing to emission controls during APEC. Secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA: sulfate + nitrate + ammonium) showed significant reductions of 62–69 %, whereas organics presented much smaller decreases (35 %). The results from the positive matrix factorization of organic aerosol (OA) indicated that highly oxidized secondary organic aerosol (SOA) showed decreases similar to those of SIA during APEC. However, primary organic aerosol (POA) from cooking, traffic, and biomass-burning sources were comparable to those before APEC, indicating the presence of strong local source emissions. The oxidation properties showed corresponding changes in response to OA composition. The average oxygen-to-carbon level during APEC was 0.36 (±0.10), which is lower than the 0.43 (±0.13) measured before APEC, demonstrating a decrease in the OA oxidation degree. The changes in size distributions of primary and secondary species varied during APEC. SIA and SOA showed significant reductions in large accumulation modes with peak diameters shifting from ~ 650 to 400 nm during APEC, whereas those of POA remained relatively unchanged. The changes in aerosol composition, size distributions, and oxidation degrees during the aging processes were further illustrated in a case study of a severe haze episode. Our results elucidated a complex response of aerosol chemistry to emission controls, which has significant implications that emission controls over regional scales can substantially reduce secondary particulates. However, stricter emission controls for local source emissions are needed for further mitigating air pollution in the megacity of Beijing.
Archean cratons have map patterns and rock associations that are diagnostic of the Wilson Cycle. The North China Craton (NCC) consists of several distinctly different tectonic units, but the ...delineation and understanding of the significance of individual sutures and the rocks between them has been controversial. We present an actualistic tectonic division and evolution of the North China Craton based on Wilson Cycle and comparative tectonic analysis that uses a multi-disciplinary approach in order to define sutures, their ages, and the nature of the rocks between them, to determine their mode of formation and means of accretion or exhumation, and propose appropriate modern analogues. The eastern unit of the craton consists of several different small blocks assembled between 2.6 and 2.7Ga ago, that resemble fragments of accreted arcs from an assembled archipelago similar to those in the extant SW Pacific. A thick Atlantic-type passive margin developed on the western side of the newly assembled Eastern Block by 2.6–2.5Ga. A >1300km-long arc and accretionary prism collided with the margin of the Eastern Block at 2.5Ga, obducting ophiolites and ophiolitic mélanges onto the block, and depositing a thick clastic wedge in a foreland basin farther into the Eastern Block. This was followed by an arc-polarity reversal, which led to a short-lived injection of mantle wedge-derived melts to the base of the crust that led to the intrusion of mafic dikes and arc-type granitoid (TTG) plutons with associated metamorphism. By 2.43Ga, the remaining open ocean west of the accreted arc closed with the collision of an oceanic plateau now preserved as the Western Block with the collision-modified margin of the Eastern Block, causing further deformation in the Central Orogenic Belt. 2.4–2.35Ga rifting of the newly amalgamated continental block formed a rift along its center, and new oceans within the other two rift arms, which removed a still-unknown continental fragment from its northern margin. By 2.3Ga an arc collided with a new Atlantic-type margin developed over the rift sequence along the northern margin of the craton, and thus was converted to an Andean margin through arc-polarity reversal.
Andean margin tectonics affected much of the continental block from 2.3 to 1.9Ga, giving rise to a broad E-W swath of continental margin magmas, and retro-arc sedimentary basins including a foreland basin superimposed on the passive northern margin. The horizontal extent of these tectonic components is similar to that across the present-day Andes in South America. From 1.88 to 1.79Ga a granulite facies metamorphic event was superimposed across the entire continental block with high-pressure granulites and eclogites in the north, and medium-pressure granulites across the whole craton to the south. The scale and duration of this post-collisional event is similar to that in Central Asia that resulted from the Cenozoic India-Asia collision. The deep crustal granulites and volcanic rocks on the surface today, interpreted to be anatectic melts from deep crustal granulites, are similar to high-grade metamorphic rocks and partial melts presently forming at mid-crustal levels beneath Tibet. Structural fabrics in lower-crustal migmatites related to this event reveal that they flowed laterally parallel to the collision boundary, in a way comparable to what is speculated to be happening in the deep crust of the Himalayan/Tibetan foreland. We relate this continent-continent collision to the collision of the North China Craton with the postulated Columbia (Nuna) Continent. The NCC broke out of the Columbia Continent between 1753–1673Ma, as shown by the formation of a suite of anorthosite, mangerite, charnockite, and alkali-feldspar granites in an ENE-striking belt along the northern margin of the craton, whose intrusion was followed by the development of rifts and graben, mafic dike swarms, and eventually an Atlantic-type passive margin that signaled the beginning of a long period of tectonic quiescence and carbonate deposition for the NCC during Sinian times, which persisted into the Paleozoic. The style of tectonic accretion in the NCC changed at circa 2.5Ga, from an earlier phase of accretion of arcs that are presently preserved in horizontal lengths of several hundred kilometers, to the accretion and preservation of linear arcs several thousand kilometers long with associated oceanic plateaus, microcontinents, and accretionary prisms. The style of progressively younger and westward outward accretion of different tectonic components is reminiscent of the style of accretion in the Superior Craton, and may signal the formation of progressively larger landmasses at the end of the Archean (perhaps like the Kenorland Continent), then into the Paleoproterozoic, culminating in the assembly of the Columbia (Nuna) Continent at 1.9–1.8Ga.
