This article introduces the fundamental principle of nanopiezotronics, which utilizes the coupled piezoelectric and semiconducting properties of nanowires and nanobelts for designing and fabricating ...electronic devices and components, such as field‐effect transistors and diodes. The physics of nanopiezotronics is based on the principle of a nanowire nanogenerator that converts mechanical energy into electric energy. It is anticipated to have a wide range of applications in electromechanical coupled electronics, sensing, harvesting/ recycling energy from the environment, and self‐powered nanosystems.

The amyloid-β protein (Aβ) protein plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). It is believed that Aβ deposited in the brain originates from the brain tissue itself. ...However, Aβ is generated in both brain and peripheral tissues. Whether circulating Aβ contributes to brain AD-type pathologies remains largely unknown. In this study, using a model of parabiosis between APPswe/PS1dE9 transgenic AD mice and their wild-type littermates, we observed that the human Aβ originated from transgenic AD model mice entered the circulation and accumulated in the brains of wild-type mice, and formed cerebral amyloid angiopathy and Aβ plaques after a 12-month period of parabiosis. AD-type pathologies related to the Aβ accumulation including tau hyperphosphorylation, neurodegeneration, neuroinflammation and microhemorrhage were found in the brains of the parabiotic wild-type mice. More importantly, hippocampal CA1 long-term potentiation was markedly impaired in parabiotic wild-type mice. To the best of our knowledge, our study is the first to reveal that blood-derived Aβ can enter the brain, form the Aβ-related pathologies and induce functional deficits of neurons. Our study provides novel insight into AD pathogenesis and provides evidence that supports the development of therapies for AD by targeting Aβ metabolism in both the brain and the periphery.

We report a successful observation of pressure-induced superconductivity in a topological compound Bi 2 Te 3 with T c of ∼3 K between 3 to 6 GPa. The combined high-pressure structure investigations ...with synchrotron radiation indicated that the superconductivity occurred at the ambient phase without crystal structure phase transition. The Hall effects measurements indicated the hole-type carrier in the pressure-induced superconducting Bi 2 Te 3 single crystal. Consequently, the first-principles calculations based on the structural data obtained by the Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction patterns at high pressure showed that the electronic structure under pressure remained topologically nontrivial. The results suggested that topological superconductivity can be realized in Bi 2 Te 3 due to the proximity effect between superconducting bulk states and Dirac-type surface states. We also discuss the possibility that the bulk state could be a topological superconductor.

Avermectins are major antiparasitic agents used commercially in animal health, agriculture and human infections. To improve the fermentation efficiency of avermectins, for the first time a plasma jet ...generated by a novel atmospheric pressure glow discharge (APGD) was employed to generate mutations in Streptomyces avermitilis. The APGD plasma jet, driven by a radio frequency (RF) power supply with water-cooled and bare-metallic electrodes, was used as a new mutation method to treat the spores of S. avermitilis. The plasma jet yielded high total (over 30%) and positive (about 21%) mutation rates on S. avermitilis, and a mutated strain, designated as G1-1 with high productivity of avermectin B1a and genetic stability, was obtained. Because of the low jet temperature, the high concentrations of the chemically reactive species and the flexibility of its operation, the RF APGD plasma jet has a strong mutagenic effect on S. avermitilis. This is a proof-of-concept study for the use of an RF APGD plasma jet for inducing mutations in microbes. We have shown that the RF APGD plasma jet could be developed as a promising and convenient mutation tool for the fermentation industry and for use in biotechnology research.

We present the spectroscopic and photometric study of five intermediate-luminosity red transients (ILRTs), namely AT 2010dn, AT 2012jc, AT 2013la, AT 2013lb, and AT 2018aes. They share common ...observational properties and belong to a family of objects similar to the prototypical ILRT SN 2008S. Aim To investigate the potential of iodine concentration (IC) determined using virtual monochromatic spectral computed tomography (CT) to predict the response of gastric carcinomas to preoperative ...neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NC). Materials and methods A total of 20 patients were enrolled who underwent two spectral CT examinations (1 week before and two cycles after NC). The percentage change in tumour thickness (%ΔCWT) and in IC on the arterial phase (%ΔIC-a) and venous phase (%ΔIC-v) after NC were calculated and compared for different histopathological regression grades and response groups. The diagnostic efficacies to discriminate good response (GR) and poor response (PR) of the above three parameters were evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results The decrease rate of %ΔIC-a for the GR group was higher than that for the PR group (−0.59 −0.76, −0.20 versus −0.11 −0.75, 0.92, p =0.012). There was no significant difference in the %ΔIC-v and %ΔCWT values between the GR and PR groups ( p =0.076 and p =0.779, respectively). The areas under the ROC curve (AUC) values were 0.857, 0.762, and 0.542 for %ΔIC-a, %ΔIC-v, and %ΔCWT, respectively, in the response prediction. The cut-off value for identifying PR was a decrease rate of <52.9% for %ΔIC-a, and the sensitivity and specificity values were 0.857 and 0.833. Conclusion Changes in the IC for gastric carcinomas following NC were detected using spectral CT and correlated with histopathological regression. The prediction efficacy for IC was better than that for tumour thickness, with IC on the arterial phase being a better predictor than IC on the venous phase.

Leaf angle distribution is a key parameter to characterize canopy structure and plays a crucial role in controlling energy and mass balance in soil-vegetation-atmosphere-transfer system. Several leaf ...angle distribution functions found in literature have been proposed to account for the non-random distribution of leaf inclination angle with one or two parameters. In this paper, these leaf angle distribution functions (Beta distribution function, ellipsoidal function, rotated-ellipsoidal function, Verhoef's algorithm and de Wit's functions) were compared with field data collected in the First ISLSCP Field Experiment (FIFE) project and two sites within Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, Sydney, Australia. All functions performed reasonably well. However, the comparison showed that the two-parameter functions including the Beta distribution function and Verhoef's algorithm commonly were more consistent predictors than one-parameter functions.

2 test applying to the estimates of leaf angle distribution demonstrated that Beta function presented more robustness over other functions, even the ellipsoidal leaf distribution function which has been widely used. Furthermore, the predictions of leaf angle distribution by these functions were used to calculate extinction coefficient and to separate foliage into sunlit and shaded parts. The results suggested that, ellipsoidal function may be suitable to be retrieved with remotely-sensed data and to compute extinction coefficient and fraction of sunlit foliage because this function requires only a single parameter, namely the ratio of the horizontal semi-axis length to the vertical semi-axis length of an ellipsoid. Finally, the comparison of three approaches (Nilson's, Fuchs’ and Ross–Goudriaan's algorithms) for computing extinction coefficient indicated that, there was no significant difference between the three approaches.

A new inventory of air pollutant emissions in Asia in the year 2006 is developed to support the Intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment-Phase B (INTEX-B) funded by the National Aeronautics and ...Space Administration (NASA). Emissions are estimated for all major anthropogenic sources, excluding biomass burning. We estimate total Asian anthropogenic emissions in the year 2006 as follows: 47.1 Tg SO2, 36.7 Tg NOx, 298.2 Tg CO, 54.6 Tg NMVOC, 29.2 Tg PM10, 22.2 Tg PM2.5, 2.97 Tg BC, and 6.57 Tg OC. We emphasize emissions from China because they dominate the Asia pollutant outflow to the Pacific and the increase of emissions from China since 2000 is of great concern. We have implemented a series of improved methodologies to gain a better understanding of emissions from China, including a detailed technology-based approach, a dynamic methodology representing rapid technology renewal, critical examination of energy statistics, and a new scheme of NMVOC speciation for model-ready emissions. We estimate China's anthropogenic emissions in the year 2006 to be as follows: 31.0 Tg SO2, 20.8 Tg NOx, 166.9 Tg CO, 23.2 Tg NMVOC, 18.2 Tg PM10, 13.3 Tg PM2.5, 1.8 Tg BC, and 3.2 Tg OC. We have also estimated 2001 emissions for China using the same methodology and found that all species show an increasing trend during 2001–2006: 36% increase for SO2, 55% for NOx, 18% for CO, 29% for VOC, 13% for PM10, and 14% for PM2.5, BC, and OC. Emissions are gridded at a resolution of 30 min×30 min and can be accessed at our web site (http://mic.greenresource.cn/intex-b2006).
Glycolysis is critical for cancer stem cell reprogramming; however, the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we show that pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 1 (PDK1) is enriched in ...breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs), whereas depletion of PDK1 remarkably diminishes ALDH
subpopulations, decreases stemness-related transcriptional factor expression, and inhibits sphere-formation ability and tumor growth. Conversely, high levels of PDK1 enhance BCSC properties and are correlated with poor overall survival. In mouse xenograft tumor, PDK1 is accumulated in hypoxic regions and activates glycolysis to promote stem-like traits. Moreover, through screening hypoxia-related long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in PDK1-positive tissue, we find that lncRNA H19 is responsible for glycolysis and BCSC maintenance. Furthermore, H19 knockdown decreases PDK1 expression in hypoxia, and ablation of PDK1 counteracts H19-mediated glycolysis and self-renewal ability in vitro and in vivo. Accordingly, H19 and PDK1 expression exhibits strong correlations in primary breast carcinomas. H19 acting as a competitive endogenous RNA sequesters miRNA let-7 to release Hypoxia-inducible factor 1α, leading to an increase in PDK1 expression. Lastly, aspirin markedly attenuates glycolysis and cancer stem-like characteristics by suppressing both H19 and PDK1. Thus, these novel findings demonstrate that the glycolysis gatekeeper PDK1 has a critical role in BCSC reprogramming and provides a potential therapeutic strategy for breast malignancy.

This study is the first in a series of papers that aim to develop high-resolution emission databases for different anthropogenic sources in China. Here we focus on on-road transportation. Because of ...the increasing impact of on-road transportation on regional air quality, developing an accurate and high-resolution vehicle emission inventory is important for both the research community and air quality management. This work proposes a new inventory methodology to improve the spatial and temporal accuracy and resolution of vehicle emissions in China. We calculate, for the first time, the monthly vehicle emissions for 2008 in 2364 counties (an administrative unit one level lower than city) by developing a set of approaches to estimate vehicle stock and monthly emission factors at county-level, and technology distribution at provincial level. We then introduce allocation weights for the vehicle kilometers traveled to assign the county-level emissions onto 0.05° × 0.05° grids based on the China Digital Road-network Map (CDRM). The new methodology overcomes the common shortcomings of previous inventory methods, including neglecting the geographical differences between key parameters and using surrogates that are weakly related to vehicle activities to allocate vehicle emissions. The new method has great advantages over previous methods in depicting the spatial distribution characteristics of vehicle activities and emissions. This work provides a better understanding of the spatial representation of vehicle emissions in China and can benefit both air quality modeling and management with improved spatial accuracy.
