Permalloy with a body-centered-cubic structure has been grown on GaAs(001) by molecular beam epitaxy. Its magnetism, Curie temperature, and magnetic anisotropy are determined experimentally and ...compared to those of conventional face-centered-cubic Permalloy. Unexpectedly the vanishing magnetic cubic anisotropy in Permalloy is found to be independent of its atomic structure but depends only upon the stoichiometry of Fe and Ni in the FexNi1-x alloy. This observation is further investigated and confirmed by first-principles electronic band calculations, which help to understand the long-standing issue of why Permalloy should be a soft magnet.

Nearly 95% of Alzheimer's disease (AD) occurs sporadically without genetic linkage. Aging, hypertension, high cholesterol content, and diabetes are known nongenomic risk factors of AD. Aggregation of ...Aβ peptides is an initial event of AD pathogenesis. Aβ peptides are catabolic products of a type I membrane protein called amyloid precursor protein (APP). Aβ40 is the major product, whereas the 2-residue-longer version, Aβ42, induces amyloid plaque formation in the AD brain. Since cholesterol content is one risk factor for sporadic AD, we aimed to explore whether cholesterol in the membrane affects the structure of the APP transmembrane region, thereby modulating the γ-secretase cutting behavior. Here, we synthesized several peptides containing the APP transmembrane region (sequence 693-726, corresponding to the Aβ
sequence) with one or two Cys mutations for spin labeling. We performed three electron spin resonance experiments to examine the structural changes of the peptides in liposomes composed of dioleoyl phosphatidylcholine and different cholesterol content. Our results show that cholesterol increases membrane thickness by 10% and peptide length accordingly. We identified that the di-glycine region of Aβ
(sequence VGGVV) exhibits the most profound change in response to cholesterol compared with other segments, explaining how the presence of cholesterol affects the γ-secretase cutting site. This study provides spectroscopic evidence showing how cholesterol modulates the structure of the APP transmembrane region in a lipid bilayer.
To explore the sequential chemotherapy efficacy of different chemotherapeutic regimens in ovarian epithelial carcinoma, fallopian tube carcinoma, and primary peritoneal carcinoma.
A retrospective ...analysis was conducted on clinical and pathological data of 100 patients with platinum-sensitive ovarian epithelial carcinoma, fallopian tube carcinoma, and primary peritoneal carcinoma treated at Peking University Peopel's Hospital from January 1992 to January 2019. All patients underwent staging surgery or cytoreductive surgery followed by adjuvant chemotherapy. Based on different postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy regimens, patients were divided into the sequential chemotherapy group (70 cases) and the conventional chemotherapy group (30 cases). In pediatric echocardiography, pulse wave Doppler, and tissue Doppler imaging velocities are widely used to assess cardiac function. Current reference values and Z scores, allowing adjustment for ...growth are limited by inconsistent methodologies and small sample size. Using a standardized approach for parametric modeling and Z score quality assessment, we propose new pediatric reference values and Z score equations for most left ventricular pulse wave Doppler and tissue Doppler imaging measurements.
Two hundred thirty-three healthy pediatric subjects 1 to 18 years of age were prospectively recruited. Thirteen pulse wave Doppler and 14 tissue Doppler imaging measurements were recorded. Normalization for growth was done via a complete and standardized approach for parametric nonlinear regression modeling. Several analyses were performed to ensure adequate Z score distribution and to detect potential residual associations with growth or residual heteroscedasticity. Most measurements adopted a nonlinear relationship with growth and displayed significant heteroscedasticity. Compared with age, height, and weight, normalization for body surface area was most efficient in removing the effect of growth. Generally, polynomial and allometric models yielded adequate goodness-of-fit. Residual values for several measurements had significant departure from the normal distribution, which could be corrected using logarithmic or reciprocal transformation. Overall, weighted parametric nonlinear models allowed us to compute Z score equations with adequate normal distribution and without residual association with growth.
We present Z scores for normalized pulse wave Doppler and tissue Doppler imaging in pediatric echocardiography. Further studies are needed to define the threshold beyond which health becomes a disease by integrating other important factors such as ventricular morphology, loading conditions, and heart rate.
: Free‐radical generation is one of the primary causes of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Melatonin is an efficient free‐radical scavenger and induces the expression of antioxidant ...enzymes. We have previously shown that melatonin can prevent free‐radical‐induced myocardial injury. To date, the mechanism underlying melatonin’s cardioprotective effect is not clear. In this study, we assessed the ability of melatonin to protect against I/R injury in mice deficient in glutathione peroxidase 1 (Gpx1). Mice hearts were subjected to 40 min of global ischemia in vitro followed by 45 min of reperfusion. Myocardial I/R injury (expressed as % of recovery of left ventricular developed pressure × heart rate) was exacerbated in mice deficient in Gpx1 (51 ± 3% for Gpx1+/+ mice versus 31 ± 6% for Gpx1−/− mice, P < 0.05). Administration of melatonin for 30 min protected against I/R injury in both Gpx1+/+ mice (72 ± 4.8%) and Gpx1−/− mice (63 ± 4.7%). This protection was accompanied by a significant improvement in left ventricular end‐diastolic pressure and a twofold decrease in lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) level released from melatonin‐treated hearts. In another set of experiments, mice were subjected to 50 min of ligation of the left descending anterior coronary artery in vivo followed by 4 hr of reperfusion. The infarct sizes, expressed as the percentage of the area at risk, were significantly larger in Gpx1−/− mice than in Gpx1+/+ mice (75 ± 9% versus 54 ± 6%, P < 0.05) and were reduced significantly in melatonin‐treated mice (31 ± 3.7% Gpx1−/− mice and 33 ± 6.0% Gpx1+/+ mice). In hearts subjected to 30 min of coronary artery occlusion followed by 3 hr of reperfusion, melatonin‐treated hearts had significantly fewer in situ oligo ligation‐positive myocytes and less protein nitration. Our results demonstrate that the cardioprotective function of melatonin is independent of Gpx1.

Soil properties, microbial communities, and enzyme activities were studied in soil planted with transgenic or nontransgenic papaya under field conditions. The transgenic papaya contained a replicase ...(RP) mutant gene of the papaya ringspot virus (PRSV), which conferred resistance to the virus, the neomycin phosphotransferase II (NPT II) marker gene, which conferred Km resistance, and a cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter (CaMV 35S). There were significant differences (P < 0.05) in the total number of colony forming units (CFUs) of bacteria, actinomycetes, and fungi between soils planted with RP-transgenic and nontransgenic plants; total CFUs of bacteria, actinomycetes, and fungi in soil planted with transgenic papaya were significantly higher by 0.43, 0.80, and 0.46 times, respectively. Significantly higher (P < 0.05) CFUs of bacteria, actinomycetes, and fungi resistant to kanamycin (Km) were present in soils planted with the transgenic papaya than in those planted with nontransgenic papaya. Resistance quotients (CFU in the presence of a chemical relative to that without) of Km-resistant bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi were higher in soil planted with transgenic papaya, and the resistance quotients of Km-resistant bacteria, actinomycetes, and fungi in soils planted with transgenic papaya increased statistically significantly (P<0.05) from 1.5 to 2.5, from 1.2 to 2.6, and from 0.9 to 2.8 times, respectively. Soils planted with transgenic papaya had significantly higher enzyme activities of arylsulfatases (+5.4 times), alkaline phosphatases (+0.5 time), invertase (+0.5 time) and phosphodiesterases (+0.2 time), but lower enzyme activities of proteases (-2.1 times), polyphenol oxidases (-1.4 times), urease (-0.2 time) than the soils planted with nontransgenic papaya. Our results suggest that transgenic papaya could alter chemical properties, enzyme activities, and microbial communities in soil.

Purpose
To investigate the long-term functional change of cryoinjury-induced detrusor underactivity (DU) and the therapeutic potential of repeated low-energy shock wave therapy (LESW).
Methods
...Fifty-six female Sprague–Dawley rats were assigned into sham and cryoinjury of bladder with or without LESW (0.05 or 0.12 mJ/mm
2
; 200 pulses; twice a week for 2 weeks after cryoinjury). Under halothane anesthesia, an incision was made in lower abdomen, and cryoinjury was provoked by bilateral placement of a chilled aluminum rod on the bladder filled with 1 ml saline. Measurement of contractile responses to KCl and carbachol in vitro, conscious voiding, and histological and protein changes were performed on week 1, 2, and 4 after cryoinjury.
Results
Cryoinjury of bladder induced a significant decrease in the detrusor contraction amplitude at week 1 (55.0%) and week 2 (57.2%), but the decrease in the contractile response to KCl and carbachol was only noted at week 1. At week 1, significantly increased COX-2 and TGF-β1 expression accompanied a decrease of VEGF and CGRP expression. At week 4, there was a partial recovery of voiding function and a significant increase in the Ki-67 staining. LESW treatment at higher energy level further amplified the Ki-67 staining and improved the recovery of contraction amplitude and the expression of TGF-β1 and VEGF.
Conclusions
Cryoinjury of detrusor induces DU/UAB with functional impairment lasting for up to 4 weeks, but the associated molecular changes are restored by 2 weeks. LESW improved bladder wall composition, and hastened functional recovery from cryoinjury.
