A fundamental question for theology is the question how we are to understand the claims that we make about God. The only language we can understand is the language we use to talk about human beings ...and their environment. How can we use that language to talk about God while respecting the infinite difference between God and humanity?
The traditional answer has been to appeal to the concept of analogy. However, that appeal has been interpreted in widely different ways. This book aims to clarify the question and this answer by an analysis of the concept. It begins with an exploration of the way the concept was evolved by Aristotle out of Greek mathematics as a technique for comparing “things that were remote”; followed by a critical examination of three very different classical accounts of the way religious language works: those of Thomas Aquinas, Immanuel Kant and Karl Barth. The book finally investigates the way in which analogy could be applied to answer the question initially posed—how is it possible to use human language to talk about God. This is a question of fundamental significance for the whole of religion and theology, concerning as it does our whole understanding of what we mean when we talk about God.
I examine the ability of the U.S. investor protection regime to limit insider trading returns, absent Section 16(b) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 (the short-swing rule). I find that in this ...setting, U.S. insiders execute short-swing trades that i) beat the market by approximately 15 basis points per day and ii) systematically divest ahead of disappointing earnings announcements. These results indicate that the bright-line rule restricting short-horizon round-trip insider trading plays a substantial role in protecting outside investors from privately informed insiders in the United States.

Lipoproteins play a key role in regulating plasma and tissue levels of cholesterol. Apolipoprotein B (apoB)-containing lipoproteins, including chylomicrons, very-low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and ...low-density lipoprotein (LDL), serve as carriers of triglycerides and cholesterol and deliver these metabolites to peripheral tissues. In contrast, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) mediates Reverse Cholesterol Transport (RCT), a process by which excess cholesterol is removed from the periphery and taken up by hepatocytes where it is metabolized and excreted. Anti-atherogenic properties of HDL have been largely ascribed to apoA-I, the major protein component of the lipoprotein particle. The inflammatory response associated with atherosclerosis and ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) injury has been linked to the development of mitochondrial dysfunction. Under these conditions, an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation induces damage to mitochondrial structural elements, leading to a reduction in ATP synthesis and initiation of the apoptotic program. Recent studies suggest that HDL-associated apoA-I and lysosphingolipids attenuate mitochondrial injury by multiple mechanisms, including the suppression of ROS formation and induction of autophagy. Other apolipoproteins, however, present in lower abundance in HDL particles may exert opposing effects on mitochondrial function. This chapter examines the role of HDL-associated apolipoproteins and lipids in the regulation of mitochondrial function and bioenergetics.
We examine the relation between worker substance abuse and workplace fraud in a sample of medical doctors. Relative to their peers, we observe that doctors engaging in substance abuse are between 50 ...and 100 times more likely to commit fraud in a given year. This result is consistent with research suggesting that substance abuse both creates financial pressures and impairs the functioning of cognitive self-regulatory mechanisms. Our results are robust in within-subject tests and between-subject tests, as well as in tests using instrumental variables that exploit exogenous variation in the state-level availability of opioids, a commonly abused substance.
Political corruption imposes substantial costs on shareholders in the U.S. Yet, we understand little about the basic factors that exacerbate or mitigate the value consequences of political ...corruption. Using federal corruption convictions data, we find that firm-level economic rents and monitoring mechanisms moderate the negative relation between corruption and firm value. The value consequences of political corruption are exacerbated for firms operating in low-rent product markets and mitigated for firms subject to external monitoring by state governments or monitoring induced by disclosure transparency. Our results should inform managers and policymakers of the tradeoffs imposed on firms operating in politically corrupt districts.
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an approved medical technique to treat certain forms of cancer. It has been used to complement traditional anticancer modalities such as surgery, chemotherapy or ...radiotherapy, and in certain cases, to replace these treatments. One critical parameter of PDT is the photosensitizer (PS); historically, a purely organic macrocyclic tetrapyrrole-based structure. This short review surveys two recent clinical examples of metal complexes, namely TOOKAD®-Soluble and TLD-1433, which have ideal photophysical properties to act as PDT PSs. We highlight the important role played by the metal ions in the PS for PDT activity.

The objective of residential Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) programs is to increase environmentally friendly home renovations, like solar panel installations, for private residences by making ...financing more readily available. Local governments use municipal bond proceeds to finance PACE loans that are secured via a property tax lien on the affected residence and repaid through temporarily higher property taxes. Critics allege that these programs can stymy housing markets through lien-related risks that discourage buyers and lenders. Using data from Florida, we find support for these claims. Our analysis suggests that PACE program rollouts predict fewer home sales and weaker house price appreciation. We investigate the channel for these results and observe that mortgage lenders are less likely to approve loan applications in areas after local PACE programs are introduced. This even occurs for homes without PACE liens, which discourages housing market liquidity and drives down housing market returns. Our results emphasize the need for thoughtful policy design and implementation to avoid unintended, negative consequences of well-intentioned sustainability programs.

Arrhythmias, conduction abnormalities, and intracardiac thrombus are common in patients with cardiac amyloidosis (CA). Outcomes of direct-current cardioversion (DCCV) for atrial arrhythmias in ...patients with CA are unknown.
This study sought to examine DCCV procedural outcomes in patients with CA.
Patients with CA scheduled for DCCV for atrial arrhythmias from January 2000 through December 2012 were identified and matched 2:1 with control patients by age, sex, type of atrial arrhythmia, and date of DCCV.
CA patients (n = 58, mean age 69 ± 9 years, 81% male) were included. CA patients had a significantly higher cardioversion cancellation rate (28% vs. 7%; p < 0.001) compared with control patients, mainly due to intracardiac thrombus identified on transesophageal echocardiogram (13 of 16 81% vs. 2 of 8 25%; p = 0.02); 4 of 13 of the CA patients (31%) with intracardiac thrombus on transesophageal echocardiogram received adequate anticoagulation ≥3 weeks and another 2 of 13 (15%) had arrhythmia duration <48 h. DCCV success rate (90% vs. 94%; p = 0.4) was not different. Procedural complications were more frequent in CA versus control patients (6 of 42 14% vs. 2 of 106 2%; p = 0.007); complications in CA included ventricular arrhythmias in 2 and severe bradyarrhythmias requiring pacemaker implantation in 2. The only complication in the control group was self-limited bradyarrhythmias.
Patients with CA undergoing DCCV had a significantly high cancellation rate mainly due to a high incidence of intracardiac thrombus even among patients who received adequate anticoagulation. Although the success rate of restoring sinus rhythm was high, tachyarrhythmias and bradyarrhythmias complicating DCCV were significantly more frequent in CA patients compared with control patients.

Reduced levels of HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) are a strong independent predictor of coronary artery disease (CAD) risk. The major anti-atherogenic function of HDL is to mediate reverse cholesterol ...transport. This response is highly dependent on apoA-I and apoE, protein components of HDL. Randomized clinical trials have assessed effects of several classes of drugs on plasma cholesterol levels in CAD patients. Agents including cholestyramine, fibrates, niacin, and statins significantly lower LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) and induce modest increases in HDL-C, but tolerance issues and undesirable side effects are common. Additionally, residual risk may be present in patients with persistently low HDL-C and other complications despite a reduction in LDL-C. These observations have fueled interest in the development of new pharmacotherapies that positively impact circulating lipoproteins. The goal of this review is to discuss the therapeutic potential of synthetic apolipoprotein mimetic peptides. These include apoA-I mimetic peptides that have undergone initial clinical assessment. We also discuss newer apoE mimetics that mediate the clearance of atherogenic lipids from the circulation and possess anti-inflammatory properties. One of these (AEM-28) has recently been given orphan drug status and is undergoing clinical trials.
