Savanna ecosystems are challenging to map and monitor as their vegetation is highly dynamic in space and time. Understanding the structural diversity and biomass distribution of savanna vegetation ...requires high-resolution measurements over large areas and at regular time intervals. These requirements cannot currently be met through field-based inventories nor spaceborne satellite remote sensing alone. UAV-based remote sensing offers potential as an intermediate scaling tool, providing acquisition flexibility and cost-effectiveness. Yet despite the increased availability of lightweight LiDAR payloads, the suitability of UAV-based LiDAR for mapping and monitoring savanna 3D vegetation structure is not well established. We mapped a 1 ha savanna plot with terrestrial-, mobile- and UAV-based laser scanning (TLS, MLS, and ULS), in conjunction with a traditional field-based inventory (n = 572 stems > 0.03 m). We treated the TLS dataset as the gold standard against which we evaluated the degree of complementarity and divergence of structural metrics from MLS and ULS. Sensitivity analysis showed that MLS and ULS canopy height models (CHMs) did not differ significantly from TLS-derived models at spatial resolutions greater than 2 m and 4 m respectively. Statistical comparison of the resulting point clouds showed minor over- and under-estimation of woody canopy cover by MLS and ULS, respectively. Individual stem locations and DBH measurements from the field inventory were well replicated by the TLS survey (R2 = 0.89, RMSE = 0.024 m), which estimated above-ground woody biomass to be 7% greater than field-inventory estimates (44.21 Mg ha−1 vs 41.08 Mg ha−1). Stem DBH could not be reliably estimated directly from the MLS or ULS, nor indirectly through allometric scaling with crown attributes (R2 = 0.36, RMSE = 0.075 m). MLS and ULS show strong potential for providing rapid and larger area capture of savanna vegetation structure at resolutions suitable for many ecological investigations; however, our results underscore the necessity of nesting TLS sampling within these surveys to quantify uncertainty. Complementing large area MLS and ULS surveys with TLS sampling will expand our options for the calibration and validation of multiple spaceborne LiDAR, SAR, and optical missions.

The miniaturisation of hyperspectral sensors for use on drones has provided an opportunity to obtain hyper temporal data that may be used to identify and monitor non-native grass species. However, a ...good understanding of variation in spectra for species over time is required to target such data collections. Five taxological and morphologically similar non-native grass species were hyper spectrally characterised from multitemporal spectra (17 samples over 14 months) over phenological seasons to determine their temporal spectral response. The grasses were sampled from maintained plots of homogenous non-native grass cover. A robust in situ standardised sampling method using a non-imaging field spectrometer measuring reflectance across the 350–2500 nm wavelength range was used to obtain reliable spectral replicates both within and between plots. The visible-near infrared (VNIR) to shortwave infrared (SWIR) and continuum removed spectra were utilised. The spectra were then resampled to the VNIR only range to simulate the spectral response from more affordable VNIR only hyperspectral scanners suitable to be mounted on drones. We found that species were separable compared to similar but different species. The spectral patterns were similar over time, but the spectral shape and absorption features differed between species, indicating these subtle characteristics could be used to distinguish between species. It was the late dry season and the end of the wet season that provided maximum separability of the non-native grass species sampled. Overall the VNIR-SWIR results highlighted more dissimilarity for unlike species when compared to the VNIR results alone. The SWIR is useful for discriminating species, particularly around water absorption.

For vegetation monitoring, it is crucial to understand which changes are caused by the measurement setup and which changes are true representations of vegetation dynamics. UAV–LiDAR offers great ...possibilities to measure vegetation structural parameters; however, UAV–LiDAR sensors are undergoing rapid developments, and the characteristics are expected to keep changing over the years, which will introduce data inter-operability issues. Therefore, it is important to determine whether datasets acquired by different UAV–LiDAR sensors can be interchanged and if changes through time can accurately be derived from UAV–LiDAR time series. With this study, we present insights into the magnitude of differences in derived forest metrics in savanna woodland when three different UAV–LiDAR systems are being used for data acquisition. Our findings show that all three systems can be used to derive plot characteristics such as canopy height, canopy cover, and gap fractions. However, there are clear differences between the metrics derived with different sensors, which are most apparent in the lower parts of the canopy. On an individual tree level, all UAV–LiDAR systems are able to accurately capture the tree height in a savanna woodland system, but significant differences occur when crown parameters are measured with different systems. Less precise systems result in underestimations of crown areas and crown volumes. When comparing UAV–LiDAR data of forest areas through time, it is important to be aware of these differences and ensure that data inter-operability issues do not influence the change analysis. In this paper, we want to stress that it is of utmost importance to realise this and take it into consideration when combining datasets obtained with different sensors.

Termite mounds are found over vast areas in northern Australia, delivering essential ecosystem services, such as enhancing nutrient cycling and promoting biodiversity. Currently, the detection of ...termite mounds over large areas requires airborne laser scanning (ALS) or high-resolution satellite data, which lack precise information on termite mound shape and size. For detailed structural measurements, we generally rely on time-consuming field assessments that can only cover a limited area. In this study, we explore if unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based observations can serve as a precise and scalable tool for termite mound detection and morphological characterisation. We collected a unique data set of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and UAV laser scanning (UAV-LS) point clouds of a woodland savanna site in Litchfield National Park (Australia). We developed an algorithm that uses several empirical parameters for the semi-automated detection of termite mounds from UAV-LS and used the TLS data set (1 ha) for benchmarking. We detected 81% and 72% of the termite mounds in the high resolution (1800 points m−2) and low resolution (680 points m−2) UAV-LS data, respectively, resulting in an average detection of eight mounds per hectare. Additionally, we successfully extracted information about mound height and volume from the UAV-LS data. The high resolution data set resulted in more accurate estimates; however, there is a trade-off between area and detectability when choosing the required resolution for termite mound detection Our results indicate that UAV-LS data can be rapidly acquired and used to monitor and map termite mounds over relatively large areas with higher spatial detail compared to airborne and spaceborne remote sensing.

Calibration and validation of aboveground biomass (AGB) (AGB) products retrieved from satellite-borne sensors require accurate AGB estimates across hectare scales (1 to 100ha). Recent studies recommend making use of non-destructive terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) based techniques for individual tree AGB estimation that provide unbiased AGB predictors. However, applying these techniques across large sites and landscapes remains logistically challenging. Unoccupied aerial vehicle laser scanning (UAV-LS) has the potential to address this through the collection of high density point clouds across many hectares, but estimation of individual tree AGB based on these data has been challenging so far, especially in dense tropical canopies. In this study, we investigated how TLS and UAV-LS can be used for this purpose by testing different modelling strategies with data availability and modelling framework requirements. The study included data from four forested sites across three biomes: temperate, wet tropical, and tropical savanna. At each site, coincident TLS and UAV-LS campaigns were conducted. Diameter at breast height (DBH) and tree height were estimated from TLS point clouds. Individual tree AGB was estimated for ≥170 trees per site based on TLS tree point clouds and quantitative structure modelling (QSM), and treated as the best available, non-destructive estimate of AGB in the absence of direct, destructive measurements. Individual trees were automatically segmented from the UAV-LS point clouds using a shortest-path algorithm on the full 3D point cloud. Predictions were evaluated in terms of individual tree root mean square error (RMSE) and population bias, the latter being the absolute difference between total tree sample population TLS QSM estimated AGB and predicted AGB. The application of global allometric scaling models (ASM) at local scale and across data modalities, i.e., field-inventory and light detection and ranging LiDAR metrics, resulted in individual tree prediction errors in the range of reported studies, but relatively high population bias. The use of adjustment factors should be considered to translate between data modalities. When calibrating local models, DBH was confirmed as a strong predictor of AGB, and useful when scaling AGB estimates with field inventories. The combination of UAV-LS derived tree metrics with non-parametric modelling generally produced high individual tree RMSE, but very low population bias of ≤5% across sites starting from 55 training samples. UAV-LS has the potential to scale AGB estimates across hectares with reduced fieldwork time. Overall, this study contributes to the exploitation of TLS and UAV-LS for hectare scale, non-destructive AGB estimation relevant for the calibration and validation of space-borne missions targeting AGB estimation.

Australian Aboriginal stories abound with depictions of birds. In more than 400 stories across 106 language groups, 116 species of birds could be identified, some more easily than others depending on ...the ornithological awareness of the recorder. The information in some of these stories reveals that Aborigines had knowledge of bird behaviour long before it was 'discovered' by ornithologists. Stories are a part of the fabric of Aboriginal culture, often indicating expected cultural behaviour, but also account for plumage characteristics, calls, habitat, food, the relationships between Earth and extraterrestrial objects, and interspecific behaviour of birds. Rarely is the Aboriginal knowledge linked with 'scientific' studies that would be the richer for embracing the ecological interrelationships that are a natural part of the holism of Aboriginal stories.
In group-living vertebrates, dominance status often covaries with physiological measurements (e.g. glucocorticoid levels), but it is unclear how dominance is linked to dynamic changes in ...physiological state over a shorter, behavioural timescale. In this observational study, we recorded spontaneous aggression among captive juvenile pheasants (
) alongside infrared thermographic measurements of their external temperature, a non-invasive technique previously used to examine stress responses in non-social contexts, where peripheral blood is redirected towards the body core. We found low but highly significant repeatability in maximum head temperature, suggesting individually consistent thermal profiles, and some indication of lower head temperatures in more active behavioural states (e.g. walking compared to resting). These individual differences were partly associated with sex, females being cooler on average than males, but unrelated to body size. During pairwise aggressive encounters, we observed a non-monotonic temperature change, with head temperature dropping rapidly immediately prior to an attack and increasing rapidly afterwards, before returning to baseline levels. This nonlinear pattern was similar for birds in aggressor and recipient roles, but aggressors were slightly hotter on average. Our findings show that aggressive interactions induce rapid temperature changes in dominants and subordinates alike, and highlight infrared thermography as a promising tool for investigating the physiological basis of pecking orders in galliforms. Synaptic density and neurite dispersion in patients was associated with reduced connectivity beyond atrophy. Functional connectivity moderated the relationship between synaptic density and clinical severity. Our findings confirm the importance of synaptic loss in frontotemporal lobar degeneration syndromes, and the resulting effect on behaviour as a function of abnormal connectivity.
Abstract This study explores the interfacial friction in ultrasonic micro-injection moulding by using different polymer feedstock shapes, characterisation of micromoulding melts through thermal ...imaging and assessing microneedle feature replication. Industry standard polypropylene pellets and discs with different thicknesses were used for varying the amount of interfacial friction during sonication. High-speed thermal imaging and tooling containing sapphire windows were used to visualise the melt characteristics. Moulded products were characterised using laser-scanning confocal microscopy to quantify microneedle replication. The study demonstrates that (i) the interfacial area for the different feedstock shapes affects the heating in ultrasonic micro-injection moulding significantly, (ii) disc-shaped feedstocks result in initially higher flow front velocities and exhibit dominance of viscoelastic heating over interfacial friction and (iii) industrial pellet feedstocks provide a good combination interfacial friction and viscoelastic heating and more viscosity reduction in overall leading to better microreplication efficiency. The results presented could have a significant impact on the process development of ultrasonic micro-injection moulding where process repeatability can be improved by controlling the interfacial friction. The research provides an essential contribution to the development of this process, where interfacial frictional heating can be tailored specifically for miniature functional components, offering improved precision and reduced energy use when compared with conventional methods.
