This paper reviews the concentrations of persistent organic pollutants such as flame retardants (PBDEs), dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls ...(PCBs) and heavy metals/metalloid concentrations of different environmental media at Guiyu, a traditional rice-growing village located in southeastern Guangdong Province (PR China), which has turned into an intensive electronic-waste (e-waste) recycling site. Incomplete combustion of e-waste in open air and dumping of processed materials are the major sources of various toxic chemicals. By comparing with existing data available in other areas and also guidelines adopted in different countries, it is obvious that the environment is highly contaminated by these toxic chemicals derived from the recycling processes. This study aimed to establish sex- and age-specific reference values for motor performance (MP) in Hong Kong preschoolers aged 3-5 years old and examine the relationship between MP and BMI status. A ...cross-sectional study was conducted among 5579 preschoolers in Hong Kong. Three MP tests were administered, and height and weight information were collected. GAMLSS was used to compute the normative values of the motor tests. Boys outperformed girls in activities requiring muscle strength and power, while girls outperformed boys in activities requiring balance and coordination. The MP scores increased with age for both overarm beanbag throw and standing long jump for both sexes, while the one-leg balance scores showed larger differences between P

in older preschoolers. Children with excessive weight performed worse in standing long jump and one-leg balance compared to their healthy weight peers. This study provides valuable information on the MP of preschoolers in Hong Kong, including sex- and age-specific reference values and the association between BMI status and MP scores. These findings can serve as a reference for future studies and clinical practice and highlight the importance of promoting motor skill development in preschoolers, particularly those who are overweight or obese.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate mRNA stability and protein expression, and certain miRNAs have been demonstrated to act either as oncogenes or tumor suppressors. Differential miRNA expression signatures ...have been documented in many human cancers but the role of miRNAs in endometrioid endometrial cancer (EEC) remains poorly understood. This study identifies significantly dysregulated miRNAs of EEC cells, and characterizes their impact on the malignant phenotype. We studied the expression of 365 human miRNAs using Taqman low density arrays in EECs and normal endometriums. Candidate differentially expressed miRNAs were validated by quantitative real‐time PCR. Expression of highly dysregulated miRNAs was examined in vitro through the effect of anti‐/pre‐miRNA transfection on the malignant phenotype. We identified 16 significantly dysregulated miRNAs in EEC and 7 of these are novel findings with respect to EEC. Antagonizing the function of miR‐7, miR‐194 and miR‐449b, or overexpressing miR‐204, repressed migration, invasion and extracellular matrix‐adhesion in HEC1A endometrial cancer cells. FOXC1 was determined as a target gene of miR‐204, and two binding sites in the 3′‐untranslated region were validated by dual luciferase reporter assay. FOXC1 expression was inversely related to miR‐204 expression in EEC. Functional analysis revealed the involvement of FOXC1 in migration and invasion of HEC1A cells. Our results present dysfunctional miRNAs in endometrial cancer and identify a crucial role for miR‐204‐FOXC1 interaction in endometrial cancer progression. This miRNA signature offers a potential biomarker for predicting EEC outcomes, and targeting of these cancer progression‐ and metastasis‐related miRNAs offers a novel potential therapeutic strategy for the disease.

The effects of sleep deprivation on the neural substrates of cognition
are poorly understood. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging
to measure the effects of 35 hours of sleep ...deprivation on cerebral activation
during verbal learning in normal young volunteers. On the basis of a previous
hypothesis, we predicted that the prefrontal cortex (PFC) would
be less responsive to cognitive demands following sleep deprivation. Contrary
to our expectations, however, the PFC was more responsive after one night
of sleep deprivation than after normal sleep. Increased subjective sleepiness
in sleep-deprived subjects correlated significantly with activation of the
PFC. The temporal lobe was activated after normal sleep but not after sleep
deprivation; in contrast, the parietal lobes were not activated after normal
sleep but were activated after sleep deprivation. Although sleep deprivation
significantly impaired free recall compared with the rested state, better
free recall in sleep-deprived subjects was associated with greater parietal
lobe activation. These findings show that there are dynamic, compensatory
changes in cerebral activation during verbal learning after sleep deprivation
and implicate the PFC and parietal lobes in this compensation.

2-Methoxyestradiol (2ME2) is a normal physiological metabolite of 17β-estradiol with anti-proliferative and anti-angiogenic activities. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the mechanism whereby ...2ME2 induces endoreduplication of the well-differentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cells. We report here that 2ME2 induces G2/M phase cell cycle arrest followed by endoreduplication of the well-differentiated HK-1 cells. The increase in chromosome number was confirmed by cytogenetic study. Analysis of stress signaling pathways revealed the phosphorylation activation of ERK, JNK and p38 MAPKs at various times after 2ME2 treatment. Pre-treatment of 2ME2-treated HK-1 cells with JNK inhibitor (SP600125), ERK inhibitor (PD98059) and p38 MAPK inhibitor (SB203580) resulted in the reduction of endoreduplicating cells. Furthermore, the increase in the phosphorylation of JNK was accompanied by an increase in the reactive oxygen species. In addition, endoreduplication was observed in cells after treatment with superoxide donor, 2,3-dimethoxy-1,4-naphoquinone (DMNQ). Confocal microscopic analysis also revealed the increase in mitochondrial superoxide anion in 2ME2-treated HK-1 cells. Pre-treatment of HK-1 cells with superoxide dismutase mimetic 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) or overexpressing the mitochondrial enzyme MnSOD resulted in the reduction of phosphorylation of JNK and the formation of endoreduplicating cells. Furthermore, the tubulin filaments in cytoplasm remain intact in 2ME2-treated HK-1 cells after pre-treatment of TEMPO. Our results suggest that 2ME2 induces endoreduplication through the induction of oxidative stress and the activation of MAPK signal pathways. The biological significance of drug-induced endoreduplication will also be discussed.

Detection of harmful gases is important to ensure human and environmental health. Industrial waste gases such as CO, NO2, H2S, and NH3 are of typical focus among researchers over the years. ...Chemiresistive sensors are suitable for detecting these harmful gases. One suitable candidate material for this sensor is the conducting polymer, which offers the advantage of room-temperature operation. This review focuses on the overall development of conducting polymer as chemiresistive sensing materials. Effects of different parameters influencing sensor performance such as response, gas concentration, response time, and recovery time of conducting polymers are explored. Different conducting polymers are compared and their affinities to specific gases are determined. An understanding of pure conducting polymers assists further exploration of these polymers in composite form. A comprehensive understanding based on an overview of literature will facilitate researchers in selecting appropriate conducting polymers for different gas sensing applications and is expected to encourage further progress in this area.
