A study was conducted to evaluate effects of alfalfa meal on growth performance and gastrointestinal tract development of growing layer ducks to provide evidence for application of alfalfa meal in ...the duck industry. Two hundred and fifty-six healthy Shaoxing 7-wk old growing layer ducks were selected and randomly allocated to 1 of 4 dietary treatments based on corn and soybean meal and containing 0, 3, 6, and 9% of alfalfa meal for 8 wks. Each treatment consisted of 4 replicates of 16 ducks each. Briefly, birds were raised in separate compartments, and each compartment consisted of three parts: indoor floor house, adjacent open area and a connecting water area. The results showed: i) Growing ducks fed alfalfa meal diet were not significantly different in average daily gain, feed intake and gain-to-feed ratio from those fed no alfalfa diet (p>0.05). ii) Alfalfa meal increased the ratio crop, gizzard to live weight, caecum to live weight, the caecum index of growing ducks (p<0.05). iii) Villus height in duodenum and jejunum of growing ducks increased significantly with the increase of alfalfa meal levels (p<0.05). Crypt depth in duodenum and jejunum of growing ducks decreased significantly with the increase of alfalfa meal levels (p<0.05). This experiment showed that feeding of alfalfa meal to growing layer ducks could improve gastrointestinal tract growth and small intestinal morphology without effect on performance. This experiment provides evidence that alfalfa meal is a very valuable feedstuff for growing layer ducks.
We have investigated the influence of assisted ion beam bombardment on structure and electrical properties of HfSiO dielectrics deposited on Si (1

Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response syndrome to infection. Human beta-defensin 1 (DEFB1) is a multifunctional mediator in infection and inflammation, which has been largely explored in ex vivo ...studies. The present case-control study was designed to investigate whether DEFB1 genomic variations are associated with the susceptibility to and the outcome of severe sepsis in 211 patients with severe sepsis and 157 ethnic-matched healthy controls. After correcting for multiple testing, the -44G/C was the only polymorphism found to show significant associations with both the susceptibility to and the fatal outcome of severe sepsis (P=0.0049, odd ratio (OR) 1.971 and P=0.002, OR 2.406, respectively). Haplotype -20A/-44C/-52G showed a protective role against severe sepsis (P=0.0066, OR 0.6751), whereas haplotype -20G/-44G/-52G served as a risk factor for the fatal outcome of severe sepsis (P=0.0052, OR 2.427). These findings provide further evidence that beta-defensin 1 may play a role in the pathogenesis of severe sepsis.

. Objectives: In this study, a group of cells that expressed both osteogenic and adipogenic characters was identified from murine adipose stromal cells. Materials and methods: These cells could be ...enriched in the Sca‐1−1 population and express both osteogenic and adipogenic genes. Osteogenic induction enhanced expression of osteogenic genes and inhibited expression of adipogenic genes, while adipogenic induction enhanced expression of adipogenic genes and inhibited expression of osteogenic genes. These cells have been called osteo–adipo progenitors (OAPs). Results: OAPs expressed transcription factor runt‐related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) and peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor‐γ (PPAR‐γ) proteins in cytoplasm. When OAPs were cultured in adipogenic medium, PPAR‐γ moved to the nucleus and the cells differentiated into adipocytes, while the RUNX2 remained in the cytoplasm. In contrast, when OAPs were cultured in osteogenic medium, RUNX2 moved to the nucleus and the cells differentiated to osteocytes, while the PPAR‐γ remained in the cytoplasm. Conclusions: These experiments suggest that osteoblasts and adipocytes share a common predecessor, the OAP, in murine adipose stromal cells.

A multi-residue method was developed for the determination of 450 pesticide residues in honey, fruit juice and wine using double-cartridge solid-phase extraction (SPE), gas chromatography-mass ...spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS). The method development was based on an appraisal of the characteristics of GC-MS and LC-MS-MS for 654 pesticides as well as the efficiency of extraction and purification from honey, fruit juice and wine. Samples were first diluted with water plus acetone, then extracted with portions of dichloromethane. The extracts were concentrated and cleaned up with graphitized carbon black and aminopropyl cartridges stacked in tandem. Pesticides were eluted with acetonitrile + toluene, and the eluates were concentrated. For 383 pesticides, the eluate was extracted with hexane twice and internal standard solution was added prior to GC-MS determination. For 67 pesticides, extraction was with methanol prior to LC-MS-MS determination. The limit of detection for the method was between 1.0 and 300 ng g-1 depending on each pesticide analyte. At the three fortification levels of 2.0-3000 ng g-1, the average recovery rates were between 59 and 123%, among which 413 pesticides (92% of the 450) had recovery rates of 70-120% and 35 pesticides (8% of the 450) had recovery rates of 59-70%. There were 437 pesticides (97% of the 450) with a relative standard deviation below 25%; there were 13 varieties (3% of the 450) between 25.0 and 30.4%.

A bstract Based on e + e − collision data collected at center-of-mass energies from 2.000 to 3.080 GeV by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, a partial wave analysis is performed for the ...process e + e − → $$ {K}_S^0{K}_L^0 $$ K S 0 K L 0 π 0 . The results allow the Born cross sections of the process e + e − → $$ {K}_S^0{K}_L^0 $$ K S 0 K L 0 π 0 , as well as its subprocesses e + e − → K ∗ (892) 0 $$ \overline{K} $$ K ¯ 0 and $$ {K}_2^{\ast } $$ K 2 ∗ (1430) 0 $$ \overline{K} $$ K ¯ 0 to be measured. The Born cross sections for e + e − → $$ {K}_S^0{K}_L^0 $$ K S 0 K L 0 π 0 are consistent with previous measurements by BaBar, but with substantially improved precision. The Born cross section lineshape of the process e + e − K ∗ (892) 0 $$ \overline{K} $$ K ¯ 0 is consistent with a vector meson state around 2.2 GeV with a significance of 3.2 σ . A Breit-Wigner fit determines its mass as M Y = (2164 . 7 ± 9 . 1 ± 3 . 1) MeV /c 2 and its width as Γ Y = (32 . 4 ± 21 . 0 ± 1 . 8) MeV.
