MgO/Mg(OH)2-based materials have been intensively explored for CO2 adsorption due to their high theoretical but low practical CO2 capture efficiency. Our previous study on the effect of H2O wetting ...on CO2 adsorption in MgO/Mg(OH)2 nanostructures found that the presence of H2O molecules significantly increases (decreases) CO2 adsorption on the MgO (Mg(OH)2) surface. Furthermore, the magneto-water-wetting technique is used to improve the CO2 capture efficiency of various nanofluids by increasing the mass transfer efficiency of nanobeads. However, the influence of magneto-wetting to the CO2 adsorption at nanobead surfaces remains unknown. The effect of magneto-water-wetting on CO2 adsorption on MgO/Mg(OH)2 nanocomposites was investigated experimentally in this study. Contrary to popular belief, magneto-water-wetting does not always increase CO2 adsorption; in fact, if Mg(OH)2 dominates in the nanocomposite, it can actually decrease CO2 adsorption. As a result of our structural research, we hypothesized that the creation of a thin H2O layer between nanograins prevents CO2 from flowing through, hence slowing down CO2 adsorption during the carbon-hydration aging process. Finally, the magneto-water-wetting technique can be used to control the carbon-hydration process and uncover both novel insights and discoveries of CO2 capture from air at room temperature to guide the design and development of ferrofluid devices for biomedical and energy applications.

Background
The Griffiths Mental Development Scales (GMDS) are used in many countries to assess the development of children from birth to 8 years. There is a need for accurate and culturally ...appropriate developmental assessment tools for Chinese children. Here, we adapted the GMDS for use in Chinese children and compare the developmental trajectories between Chinese and British children.
Methods
Children with typical development were recruited from 7 urban cities in China between 2009 and 2013. The Griffiths Mental Development Scales‐Chinese (GDS‐C) were adapted and used to assess the development of urban Chinese children. Developmental curves were computed for 6 subscales using learning management system methods and compare against the British curves from the Griffiths Mental Development Scales‐Extended Revised (GMDS‐ER).
Results
The GDS‐C were used to assess the developmental status of 815 Chinese children. Plots of the 1st, 5th, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, 95th, and 99th percentiles, and full percentile tables were obtained, which showed similar trends to data from the British GMDS‐ER.
Conclusions
The Chinese developmental curves obtained from the GDS‐C showed similarities and differences to the developmental curves from the British GMDS‐ER. The development of urban Chinese children should be assessed with the culturally appropriate GDS‐C.

Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) is a powerful method for revealing the diversity and complexity of the somatic mutation burden of tumours. Here, we investigated the utility of tumour and matched ...germline WGS for understanding aetiology and treatment opportunities for high-risk individuals with familial breast cancer.
We carried out WGS on 78 paired germline and tumour DNA samples from individuals carrying pathogenic variants in BRCA1 (n=26) or BRCA2 (n=22) or from non-carriers (non-BRCA1/2; n=30).
Matched germline/tumour WGS and somatic mutational signature analysis revealed patients with unreported, dual pathogenic germline variants in cancer risk genes (BRCA1/BRCA2; BRCA1/MUTYH). The strategy identified that 100% of tumours from BRCA1 carriers and 91% of tumours from BRCA2 carriers exhibited biallelic inactivation of the respective gene, together with somatic mutational signatures suggestive of a functional deficiency in homologous recombination. A set of non-BRCA1/2 tumours also had somatic signatures indicative of BRCA-deficiency, including tumours with BRCA1 promoter methylation, and tumours from carriers of a PALB2 pathogenic germline variant and a BRCA2 variant of uncertain significance. A subset of 13 non-BRCA1/2 tumours from early onset cases were BRCA-proficient, yet displayed complex clustered structural rearrangements associated with the amplification of oncogenes and pathogenic germline variants in TP53, ATM and CHEK2.
Our study highlights the role that WGS of matched germline/tumour DNA and the somatic mutational signatures can play in the discovery of pathogenic germline variants and for providing supporting evidence for variant pathogenicity. WGS-derived signatures were more robust than germline status and other genomic predictors of homologous recombination deficiency, thus impacting the selection of platinum-based or PARP inhibitor therapy. In this first examination of non-BRCA1/2 tumours by WGS, we illustrate the considerable heterogeneity of these tumour genomes and highlight that complex genomic rearrangements may drive tumourigenesis in a subset of cases.

Despite their low contribution to forest carbon stocks, lianas (woody vines) play an important role in the carbon dynamics of tropical forests. As structural parasites, they hinder tree survival, ...growth and fecundity; hence, they negatively impact net ecosystem productivity and long‐term carbon sequestration.
Competition (for water and light) drives various forest processes and depends on the local abundance of resources over time. However, evaluating the relative role of resource availability on the interactions between lianas and trees from empirical observations is particularly challenging. Previous approaches have used labour‐intensive and ecosystem‐scale manipulation experiments, which are infeasible in most situations.
We propose to circumvent this challenge by evaluating the uncertainty of water and light capture processes of a process‐based vegetation model (ED2) including the liana growth form. We further developed the liana plant functional type in ED2 to mechanistically simulate water uptake and transport from roots to leaves, and start the model from prescribed initial conditions. We then used the PEcAn bioinformatics platform to constrain liana parameters and run uncertainty analyses.
Baseline runs successfully reproduced ecosystem gas exchange fluxes (gross primary productivity and latent heat) and forest structural features (leaf area index, aboveground biomass) in two sites (Barro Colorado Island, Panama and Paracou, French Guiana) characterized by different rainfall regimes and levels of liana abundance.
Model uncertainty analyses revealed that water limitation was the factor driving the competition between trees and lianas at the drier site (BCI), and during the relatively short dry season of the wetter site (Paracou). In young patches, light competition dominated in Paracou but alternated with water competition between the wet and the dry season on BCI according to the model simulations.
The modelling workflow also identified key liana traits (photosynthetic quantum efficiency, stomatal regulation parameters, allometric relationships) and processes (water use, respiration, climbing) driving the model uncertainty. They should be considered as priorities for future data acquisition and model development to improve predictions of the carbon dynamics of liana‐infested forests.

Objectives
Due to the increased morbidity, mortality, and cost of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in older people, strategies directed at improving disease evaluation and prevention are ...imperative. We independently compared the 30-day in-hospital mortality prediction ability of a frailty index based on laboratory data (FI-Lab) with that of the CURB-65 and the Pneumonia Severity Index (PSI) and then proposed combining them to further improve prediction efficiency.
Design
Retrospective cohort study.
Setting and Participants
Patients aged ≥ 65 years (n = 2039) with CAP who were admitted to Jiangsu Provincial People’s Hospital of Nanjing Medical University and Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine from January 2019 to June 2022.
Measures
The 29-item FI-Lab, PSI and, CURB-65 were administered at admission. We defined frailty by the cut-off value of the FI-Lab score (> 0.43). Multivariable logistic regression analysis, together with the calculation of the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC-AUC), was conducted to identify stratified risks and relationships between the three indices and 30-day mortality. Participants were divided into the following three groups based on age: 65–74 years, 75–84 years, and ≥ 85 years. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for mortality due to frailty were calculated.
Results
A total of 495 participants ranging from 65 to 100 years of age were ultimately included and divided into age groups (65–74 years, n = 190, 38.4%; 75–84 years, n = 183, 37.0%; ≥ 85 years, n = 122, 24.6%). A total of 142 (28.7%) of the 495 patients were defined as having frailty. All three scores tested in this study were significantly associated with 30-day mortality in the total sample. The ORs were as follows: 1.06 (95% CI: 1.03–1.09, P < 0.001) and 2.33 (95% CI: 1.26–4.31, P = 0.007) for the FI-Lab when the score was treated as a continuous and categorical variable, respectively; 1.04 (95% CI: 1.02–1.05, P < 0.001) for the PSI; and 3.70 (95% CI: 2.48–5.50, P < 0.001) for the CURB-65. In the total sample, the ROC-AUCs were 0.783 (95% CI: 0.744–0.819) for the FI-Lab, 0.812 (95% CI: 0.775–0.845) for the PSI, and 0.799 (95% CI: 0.761–0.834) for the CURB-65 (P < 0.001). The ROC-AUC slightly improved when the FI-Lab was added to the PSI (AUC 0.850, 95% CI: 0.809–0.892, P = 0.031) and to the CURB-65 (AUC 0.839, 95% CI: 0.794–0.885, P = 0.002). Older patients with frailty showed a higher risk of in-hospital mortality, with an HR of 2.25 (95% CI: 1.14–3.58, P < 0.001).
Conclusion and Implications
The FI-Lab seems to generate simple and readily available data, suggesting that it could be a useful complement to the CURB-65 and the PSI as effective predictors of 30-day mortality due to CAP in older populations.
Given the importance of deregulated phosphoinositide (PI) signaling in leukemic hematopoiesis, genes coding for proteins that regulate PI metabolism may have significant and as yet unappreciated ...roles in leukemia. We performed a targeted knockdown (KD) screen of PI modulator genes in human acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells and identified candidates required to sustain proliferation or prevent apoptosis. One of these, the lipid kinase phosphatidylinositol-5-phosphate 4-kinase, type II, alpha (PIP4K2A) regulates cellular levels of phosphatidylinositol-5-phosphate (PtsIns5P) and phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PtdIns(4,5)P₂). We found PIP4K2A to be essential for the clonogenic and leukemia-initiating potential of human AML cells, and for the clonogenic potential of murine MLL-AF9 AML cells. Importantly, PIP4K2A is also required for the clonogenic potential of primary human AML cells. Its KD results in accumulation of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors CDKN1A and CDKN1B, G₁ cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Both CDKN1A accumulation and apoptosis were partially dependent on activation of the mTOR pathway. Critically, however, PIP4K2A KD in normal hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells, both murine and human, did not adversely impact either clonogenic or multilineage differentiation potential, indicating a selective dependency that we suggest may be the consequence of the regulation of different transcriptional programs in normal versus malignant cells. Thus, PIP4K2A is a novel candidate therapeutic target in myeloid malignancy.

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the roles and underlying mechanism of an inflammatory mediator—lipocalin-2 (Lcn2) in small-for-size fatty graft liver injury.
BACKGROUND:Understanding of the distinct ...mechanism regulating small-for-size fatty liver graft injury will be crucial to prevent marginal graft failure during living donor liver transplantation (LDLT).
METHODS:The roles of Lcn2 in small fatty graft injury were investigated in orthotopic liver transplantation model rats, human LDLT samples, an in vitro simulated ischemia-reperfusion (IR) model, and a hepatic ischemic reperfusion plus major hepatectomy (IR + H) model in mice.
RESULTS:Our result showed that Lcn2 was significantly upregulated together with elevation of chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 10 (CXCL10) and activation/infiltration of intragraft macrophages after liver transplantation using small-for-size fatty liver graft compared with that of using small-for-size normal liver graft. Intragraft and plasma levels of Lcn2 were intensified in patients who underwent transplantation with small-for-size fatty graft after LDLT. Lcn2 and CXCL10 were expressed higher in fatty hepatocytes after the simulated IR injury compared with normal hepatocytes. Overexpression of Lcn2 significantly deteriorated IR + H–induced hepatic injury in correlation with upregulation of CXCL10 and augmentation of infiltrated macrophages. On the contrary, hepatic injury of small fatty liver remnant after IR + H operation was attenuated in the Lcn-2 mice because of suppression of CXCL10 expression and diminishment of macrophage infiltration.
CONCLUSIONS:Lcn2 is an important regulator in small-for-size fatty liver graft injury and targeting Lcn2 may be feasible for preventing marginal graft failure in LDLT.
Since 1997, outbreaks of highly pathogenic (HP) H5N1 and circulation of H9N2 viruses among domestic poultry in Asia have posed a threat to public health. To better understand the extent of ...transmission of avian influenza viruses (AIV) to humans in Asia, we conducted a cross-sectional virologic study in live bird markets (LBM) in Hanoi, Vietnam, in October 2001. Specimens from 189 birds and 18 environmental samples were collected at 10 LBM. Four influenza A viruses of the H4N6 (n = 1), H5N2 (n = 1), and H9N3 (n = 2) subtypes were isolated from healthy ducks for an isolation frequency of over 30% from this species. Two H5N1 viruses were isolated from healthy geese. The hemagglutinin (HA) genes of these H5N1 viruses possessed multiple basic amino acid motifs at the cleavage site, were HP for experimentally infected chickens, and were thus characterized as HP AIV. These HA genes shared high amino acid identities with genes of other H5N1 viruses isolated in Asia during this period, but they were genetically distinct from those of H5N1 viruses isolated from poultry and humans in Vietnam during the early 2004 outbreaks. These viruses were not highly virulent for experimentally infected ducks, mice, or ferrets. These results establish that HP H5N1 viruses with properties similar to viruses isolated in Hong Kong and mainland China circulated in Vietnam as early as 2001, suggest a common source for H5N1 viruses circulating in these Asian countries, and provide a framework to better understand the recent widespread emergence of HP H5N1 viruses in Asia.
