•Chicken egg white (CEW) protein-directed synthesis of fluorescent CuNCs were demonstrated.•The synthesis approach of CEW@CuNCs is a simple, straightforward, cost-effective and green.•The generated ...CEW@CuNCs were used for reversible sensing pH change in the range 6.14–12.08 aqueous solution.
A simple, green and one-step synthesis approach in aqueous solution was reported for the preparation of the inexpensive chicken egg white (CEW) protected copper nanoclusters (CEW@CuNCs). It was developed without using any reducing agents and the product exhibited extremely stable properties. The fluorescent CEW@CuNCs for reversible pH sensors has been designed based on the distinctly fluorescence enhancing of CuNCs. Meanwhile, the fluorescence intensity of the CuNCs showed a linear relation over the pH ranges of 6.14–12.08 and increased by around 5-fold approximately at high pH values compare with a low pH of 6.14. As expected, the pH sensor was also sensitive to the different buffer solutions and the ionic strength had only a slight influence on the pH-responsive behavior. All above features indicated that functionalized copper nanoclusters-based fluorescent pH sensors as sensing platform with nanoscaled physical dimensions would be a great potential for applications in biological, medical and analytical detection fields.

Human noroviruses (HuNoVs) are a major cause of nonbacterial gastroenteritis in all age groups worldwide. HuNoVs can be detected in vitro using molecular assays such as RT-PCR and RT-qPCR. However, ...these molecular-based techniques require special equipment, unique reagents, experienced personnel, and extended time to obtain results. Besides, the diversity of viral genotypes is high. Therefore, methods that are rapid, broad-range and effective in the detection of HuNoVs are desiderated for screening the feces or vomit of infected people during outbreaks.
In this study, a colloidal-gold-based immunochromatographic assay (ICA) was developed for effective detection of HuNoVs in clinical samples. Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against the shell (S) domain in the major capsid protein of HuNoVs were used in the ICA. The limitations of detection for HuNoVs in clinical samples were 1.2 × 10
genomic copies per gram of stool sample (gc/g) and 4.4 × 10
gc/g for genogroup I and II (GI and GII) HuNoVs, respectively. A total of 122 clinical samples were tested for HuNoVs by ICA and compared against RT-qPCR. The relative sensitivity, specificity and agreement of ICA was 84.2% (95% CI: 83.6-84.8%), 100.0% (95% CI: 98.5-100.0%) and 87.7% (95% CI: 85.6-89.8%), respectively. No cross-reaction with other common enteric viruses or bacteria was observed. The ICA detected a broad range of genotypes, including GI.1, GI.3, GI.4, GI.6, GI.14, GII.2, GII.3, GII.4, GII.6, GII.13, and GII.17 HuNoVs.
This study demonstrates that ICA targeting the S domain of VP1 is a promising candidate for effectively identifying the different genotypes of HuNoVs in clinical samples with high sensitivity and specificity.

This study was conducted to identify new quantitative trait loci (QTLs) that have stable effects for eating and cooking quality (ECQ) of rice. Three recombinant inbred line populations of indica rice ...were each planted in two years. Three traits for ECQ, amylose content (AC), gel consistency (GC) and alkali spreading value (ASV), were measured for QTL analysis. A total of 13 QTLs were detected, including four for AC, six for ASV and three for GC. Two QTLs, qGC4 in the interval RM16252–RM335 on the short arm of chromosome 4 and qGC6.2 in the Alk region, were validated in a population derived from a residual heterozygote that was homozygous at the major locus Wx. In the absence of segregation at the Wx locus, qGC4 and qGC6.2 had additive effects of 2.46 and 8.18 mm, respectively, offering a potential for improving GC property of rice varieties. Comparison between qGC4 and previous results suggests that qGC4 is likely a new QTL for GC, providing a candidate for gene cloning and functional characterization.

This paper employs advanced panel econometric techniques that allow for heterogeneous slope coefficients and cross-section dependence to investigate the impact of economic globalization on CO2 ...emissions in 15 emerging countries over the period 1970–2012. The results demonstrate that, in the long-run, a 1% increase in economic globalization reduces CO2 emissions by −0.11%, and these results are robust across different estimation techniques. Our novel finding not only help advance the existing literature, but also deserve special attention from policy makers in emerging countries.
•We study elasticities of economic globalization on CO2 emissions in emerging countries.•The dynamic heterogeneous panel estimation approaches are applied.•We find that economic globalization is in the favor of environmental improvement.•In the long-run, a 1% increase in economic globalization reduces CO2 emissions by −0.11%.•Both income and energy intensity have a positive impact on CO2 emissions.

Cascaded relativistic magnetron (CRM) is a novel design for relativistic magnetron (RM) with phase-locked microwave output. A cascaded phase-locking RM contains two slow wave structures (SWSs) and an ...axially extended coupling cavity, which was designed to obtain eight-way phase-locked microwave output. Simulations show that under 650-kV anode voltage and 0.59-T axial magnetic field, the CRM operated in <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">\pi </tex-math> </inline-formula>-mode, the output signals fell into a phase-locked state in 14 ns, the power of each way is about 200 MW with 3.75-GHz frequency, and total power exceeded 1.5 GW under 5.5-kA anode voltage. In the serial cascaded configuration, the driven voltage is fed from the intersection of the anode, which obtains a 44% device efficiency.
In order to improve the interface and mechanical properties of aramid fiber (AF)-reinforced epoxy resin (EP) composites (AF/EPs), the surface modification of AF was carried out with atmospheric ...pressure air plasma, and the effects of plasma treatment time and discharge power on the AF surface and the interface and mechanical properties of AF/EPs were investigated. The results show that, when plasma treatment time was 10 min and discharge power was 400 W, AF showed the best modification effect. Compared to the unmodified material, the total content of active groups on the surface of AF increased by 82.4%; the contact angle between AF and EP decreased by 20%; the interfacial energy and work of adhesion increased by 77.1% and 19.1%, respectively; the loss of AF monofilament tensile strength was controlled at only 8.6%; and the interlaminar shear strength and tensile strength of AF/EPs increased by 45.5% and 10.4%, respectively. The improvement in AF/EP interfacial and mechanical properties is due to the introduction of more active groups on the AF surface with suitable plasma processing parameters, which strengthens the chemical bonding between the AF and EP matrix. At the same time, plasma treatment effectively increases the surface roughness of AF, and the mechanical meshing effect between the AF and EP matrix is improved. The synergistic effect of chemical bonding and mechanical meshing improves the wettability and interfacial bonding strength between the AF and EP matrix, which enables the load to be transferred from the resin to the fiber more efficiently, thereby improving the mechanical properties of the AF/EP.

•This is the first health economics analysis about bevacizumab treatment for MPM.•The study evaluate the cost-effectiveness of bevacizumab for MPM from the perspective of Chinese society.•The study ...can provided useful information for the decision-makers in clinical practice from the economic perspective.
Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare malignancy, and pemetrexed/cisplatin (PC) is the gold standard first-line regime. This study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of the addition of bevacizumab to PC (with maintenance bevacizumab) for unresectable MPM based on a phase III trial that showed a survival benefit compared with chemotherapy alone.
To estimate the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of the incorporation of bevacizumab, a Markov model based on the MAPS trial, including the disease states of progression-free survival, progressive disease and death, was used. Total costs were calculated from a Chinese payer perspective, and health outcomes were converted into quality-adjusted life year (QALY). Model robustness was explored in sensitivity analyses.
The addition of bevacizumab to PC was estimated to increase the cost by $81446.69, with a gain of 0.112 QALYs, resulting in an ICER of $727202.589 per QALY. In both one-way sensitivity and probabilistic sensitivity analyses, the ICER exceeded the commonly accepted willingness-to-pay threshold of 3 times the gross domestic product per capita of China ($23970.00 per QALY). The cost of bevacizumab had the most important impact on the ICER.
The combination of bevacizumab with PC chemotherapy is not a cost-effective treatment option for MPM in China. Given its positive clinical value and extremely low incidence of MPM, an appropriate price discount, assistance programs and medical insurance should be considered to make bevacizumab more affordable for this rare patient population.

Local functional homogeneity of the human cortex indicates the boundaries between functionally heterogeneous regions and varies remarkably across the cortical mantle. It is unclear whether these ...variations have the neurobiological and structural basis. We employed structural and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scans from 482 healthy subjects and computed the vertex-wise regional homogeneity of low-frequency fluctuations (2dReHo) and five measures of cortical morphology. We then used these metrics to examine regional variation, morphological association and functional covariance network of 2dReHo. Within the ventral visual stream, increases of 2dReHo reflect reduced complexity of information processing or functional hierarchies. Along the divisions of the prefrontal cortex and posteromedial cortex, the gradients of 2dReHo revealed the hierarchical organization within the two association areas, respectively. Individual differences in 2dReHo are associated with those of cortical morphology, and their whole-brain inter-regional covariation is organized into a functional covariance network, comprising five hierarchically organized modules with hubs of both primary sensory and high-order association areas. These highly reproducible observations suggest that local functional homogeneity has neurobiological relevance that is likely determined by anatomical, developmental and neurocognitive factors and should serve as a neuroimaging marker to investigate the human brain function.

To identify the main risk factors for metachronous metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in different periods after radiotherapy and estimate the weight of various factors in the early or late ...metachronous metastasis (EMM/LMM) groups.
This retrospective registry consists of 4434 patients with newly diagnosed NPC. Cox regression analysis was used to assess the independent significance of various risk factors. The Interactive Risk Attributable Program (IRAP) was used to calculate the attributable risks (ARs) for metastatic patients during different periods.
Among 514 metastatic patients, 346 (67.32%) patients diagnosed with metastasis within 2 years after treatment were classified into the EMM group, while other 168 patients were classified into the LMM group. The ARs of T-stage, N-stage, pre-Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA, post-EBV DNA, age, sex, pre-neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, pre-platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, pre-hemoglobin (HB), and post-HB were 20.19, 67.25, 2.81, 14.28, 18.50, - 11.17%, 14.54, 9.60, 3.74% and - 9.79%, respectively, in the EMM group. In the LMM group, the corresponding ARs were 3.68, 49.11, - 18.04%, 2.19, 6.11, 0.36, 4.62, 19.77, 9.57 and 7.76%, respectively. After multivariable adjustment, the total AR for tumor-related factors was 78.19%, and that for patient-related factors was 26.07% in the EMM group. In the LMM group, the total AR of tumor-related factors was 43.85%, while the weights of patient-related factors was 39.97%. In addition, except for these identified tumor- and patient-related factors, other unevaluated factors played a more important role in patients with late metastasis, with the weight increasing by 15.77%, from 17.76% in the EMM group to 33.53% in the LMM group.
Most metachronous metastatic NPC cases occurred in the first 2 years after treatment. Early metastasis was mainly affected by tumor-related factors, which accounted for a declining percentage in the LMM group.
