MicroRNAs (miRNAs) circulating in the peripheral blood are reported to modulate signaling between cells, and to be diagnostic markers for cancers. The purpose of this study was to identify circulating miRNAs for predicting the severity of SCI in the acute phase.

Mouse SCI models were made using Infinite Horizon impactor with 50 or 70 kdyn compressing power following thoracic laminectomy. The mice were then divided into four groups: normal (without surgery), sham (laminectomy only), mild (50 kdyn), and severe (70 kdyn). TaqMan low-density array analysis and real-time PCR were performed to identify candidate miRNAs that were increased in the serum relative to the severity of SCI.
The expression levels of miR-9*, miR-219 and miR-384-5p in the serum were significantly increased relative to the severity of SCI 12 h after injury. The expression of miR-9* was also significantly increased relative to injury severity at 3 and 24 h after injury.
Serum miR-9*, miR-219 and miR-384-5p might be promising biomarkers for predicting the severity of SCI.

Our aim was to evaluate the radiographic characteristics of patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) for the potential of posterior bony impingement using CT simulations.
Virtual CT data from ...112 patients who underwent THA were analysed. There were 40 men and 72 women. Their mean age was 59.1 years (41 to 76). Associations between radiographic characteristics and posterior bony impingement and the range of external rotation of the hip were evaluated. In addition, we investigated the effects of pelvic tilt and the neck/shaft angle and femoral offset on posterior bony impingement.
The range of external rotation and the ischiofemoral length were significantly lower, while femoral anteversion, the ischial ratio, and ischial angle were significantly higher in patients with posterior bony impingement compared with those who had implant impingement (p < 0.05). The range of external rotation positively correlated with ischiofemoral length (r = 0.49, p < 0.05), and negatively correlated with ischial length (r = -0.49, p < 0.05), ischial ratio (r =- 0.49, p < 0.05) and ischial angle (r = -0.55, p < 0.05). The range of external rotation was lower in patients with posterior pelvic tilt (p < 0.05) and in those with a high offset femoral component (p < 0.05) due to posterior bony impingement.
Posterior bony impingement after THA is more likely in patients with a wider ischium and a narrow ischiofemoral space. A high femoral offset and posterior pelvic tilt are also risk factors for this type of impingement. Cite this article:

Smart agriculture is recommended for labor-saving, refinement and high quality production of rice cultivation with safety and security. The Terrestrial laser measurement has the advantage of ...acquiring 3D point cloud information with high accuracy and high density, but there is a disadvantage that it becomes difficult to measure the base of rice plant when paddy rice grew. In this study, the 3D point cloud information obtained by terrestrial laser measurement was used to three-dimensionally measure the growth state in the field corresponding to the growing period in time series. The growth characteristics of the whole field as a community were extracted as a representative value of mean growth. Then we attempted extraction of individual differences in growth and growth unevenness, as the deviation from the mean value of the field in terms of the growth characteristics of each strain focused on the individual plants. it is difficult to observe the root of the rice during the growing period, it was used for analyzing the growth quantity as the growth difference height for each growing period by obtaining the difference of the elevation value of the rice at the early stage of growth and at each stage of growing. The spatial variation in the growth quantity of the whole field area and the local area was calculated, the range of the deviation for evaluating the mean variation and the growth abnormality was examined, and the setting of the threshold for evaluating the growth normal and abnormality was examined.
In Japan, osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip secondary to acetabular dysplasia is very common, and there are few data concerning the pathogeneses and incidence of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). We ...have attempted to clarify the radiological prevalence of painful FAI in a cohort of Japanese patients and to investigate the radiological findings. We identified 176 symptomatic patients (202 hips) with Tönnis grade 0 or 1 osteoarthritis, whom we prospectively studied between August 2011 and July 2012. There were 61 men (65 hips) and 115 women (137 hips) with a mean age of 51.8 years (11 to 83). Radiological analyses included the α-angle, centre-edge angle, cross-over sign, pistol grip deformity and femoral head neck ratio. Of the 202 hips, 79 (39.1%) had acetabular dysplasia, while 80 hips (39.6%) had no known aetiology. We found evidence of FAI in 60 hips (29.7%). Radiological FAI findings associated with cam deformity were the most common. There was a significant relationship between the pistol grip deformity and both the α-angle (p < 0.001) and femoral head-neck ratio (p = 0.024). Radiological evidence of symptomatic FAI was not uncommon in these Japanese patients.

Telomere length plays an important role in regulating the proliferative capacity of cells, and serves as a marker for cell cycle history and also for their remaining replicative potential. ...Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) are known to be a significant cell source for therapeutic intervention and tissue engineering. To investigate any possible limitations in the replicative potential and chondrogenic differentiation potential of fibroblast growth factor‐2‐expanded MSCs (FGF(+)MSC), these cells were differentiated at various population doublings (PDs), and telomere length and telomerase activity were measured before and after differentiation. FGF(+)MSC cultured at a relatively low density maintained proliferation capability past more than 80 PD and maintained chondrogenic differentiation potential up to at least 46 PD and long telomeres up to 105 PD, despite expressing low levels of telomerase activity. Interestingly, upon chondrogenic differentiation of these cells, telomeres showed a remarkable reduction in length. This shortening was more extensive when FGF(+)MSC of higher PD levels were differentiated. These findings suggest that telomere length may be a useful genetic marker for chondrogenic progenitor cells.

The objective of this study was to present the outcomes of rotational acetabular osteotomy (RAO) over a 30-year period for osteoarthritis (OA) secondary to dysplasia of the hip in pre- or early-stage ...OA.
Between September 1987 and December 1994, we provided treatment to 47 patients (55 hips) with RAO for the management of pre- or early-stage OA due to developmental hip dysplasia. Of those, eight patients (11 hips) with pre-OA (follow-up rate 79%) and 27 patients (32 hips) with early-stage OA (follow-up rate 78%), totalling 35 patients (43 hips) (follow-up rate 78%), were available at a minimum of 28 years after surgery.
In the pre-OA group, the mean Merle d'Aubigné score improved significantly from 14.5 points (SD 0.7) preoperatively to 17.4 points at final follow-up (SD 1.2; p = 0.004) and in the early-stage group, the mean score did not improve significantly from 14.0 (SD 0.3) to 14.6 (SD 2.4; p = 0.280). Radiologically, the centre-edge angle, acetabular roof angle, and head lateralization index were significantly improved postoperatively in both groups. Radiological progression of OA was observed in two patients (two hips) in the pre-OA group and 17 patients (18 hips) in the early-stage group. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, with radiological progression of OA as the primary outcome, projected a 30-year survival rate of 81.8% (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.59 to 1.00) for the pre-OA group and 42.2% (95% CI 0.244 to 0.600) for the early-stage group. In all cases, the overall survival rate stood at 51.5% (95% CI 0.365 to 0.674) over a 30-year period, and when the endpoint was conversion to total hip arthroplasty, the survival rate was 74.0% (95% CI 0.608 to 0.873).
For younger patients with pre-OA, joint preservation of over 30 years can be expected after RAO.
The pathogenesis of canine pyometra is still unclear, but bacterial infection of the endometrium, mediated by bacterial lectins, is suspected to induce pyometra. The aim of this study was to ...investigate sugar expression in the mucosae of the uterus and vagina of healthy dogs with normal oestrous cycles and in dogs with pyometra, using a panel of lectins to investigate the pathogenesis of pyometra.
In dogs with pyometra, the uterine and vaginal mucosae were positive for lectins that selectively bind to glucose or mannose, especially during days 7–10 and 30–40 of dioestrus. These results suggest that temporal changes in sugar expression in the uterus and vagina present an opportunity for pathogens to infect the endometrium, causing pyometra.

Acetabular dysplasia was produced in 24 immature white rabbits. A rotational acetabular osteotomy was then carried out and radiological and histological studies of the articular cartilage were made. ...In the hips which did not undergo osteotomy, radiographs at 26 weeks showed that residual subluxation remained and arthritic changes such as narrowing of the joint space or dislocation were still seen. However, in the operated group there was a remarkable increase in cover, but arthritic changes were not observed. After 24 weeks, the Mankin grading score in the operated group was significantly lower than that in the non-operated group. The latter hips showed an irregular surface of the cartilage, exfoliation and proliferation of synovial tissue. In those undergoing osteotomy, primary cloning of chondrocytes or hypercellularity was seen and at 24 weeks after operation and metaplasia of the cartilage in the fibrous tissue was observed in the boundary between the medial area of the acetabulum and the acetabular fossa.
