Bulk charge density waves are now reported in nearly all high-temperature superconducting cuprates, with the noticeable exception of one particular family: the copper oxychlorides. Here, we used ...resonant inelastic X-ray scattering to reveal a bulk charge density waves in these materials. Combining resonant inelastic X-ray scattering with non-resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, we investigate the interplay between the lattice excitations and the charge density wave, and evidence the phonon anomalies of the Cu-O bond-stretching mode at the charge density wave wave-vector. We propose that such electron-phonon anomalies occur in the presence of dispersive charge excitations emanating from the charge density wave and interacting with the Cu-O bond-stretching phonon. Our results pave the way for future studies, combining both bulk and surface probes, to investigate the static and dynamical properties of the charge density wave in the copper oxychloride family.

Coherent x-ray diffraction experiments have been performed on high quality crystals of the charge density wave (CDW) system K0.3MoO3. The satellite reflections associated with the CDW have been ...measured as a function of the 20-microm-diameter beam position. For some positions, regular fringes have been observed. We show that this observation is consistent with the presence of a single CDW dislocation. Beyond charge density wave systems, this experiment shows that coherent x-ray diffraction is a suitable tool to probe topological defects embedded in the bulk.

N-doped Co sub(x) Zn sub(1-x) O epitaxial films were grown by reactive magnetron sputtering using a range of different N sub(2) and O sub(2) concentrations. They were studied by x-ray absorption near ...edge spectroscopy (XANES) and x-ray linear dichroism (XLD). The incorporation of N into the ZnO host lattice could be determined via the XLD at the N K-edge in comparison with the O K-edge and respective simulations of XANES and XLD of the various dopant configurations. The addition of nitrogen predominantly leads to the formation of molecular nitrogen on O sites (split interstitial). Only for samples grown with very low O sub(2) partial pressure was a small fraction of the N found to substitute for O in its atomic form.

We report the direct measurement of antiferromagnetic spin polarization at the oxygen sites in the multiferroic TbMn2O5, through resonant soft x-ray magnetic scattering. This supports recent ...theoretical models suggesting that the oxygen spin polarization is key to the magnetoelectric coupling mechanism. The spin polarization is observed through a resonantly enhanced diffraction signal at the oxygen K edge at the commensurate antiferromagnetic wave vector. Using the fdmnes code we have accurately reproduced the experimental data. We have established that the resonance arises through the spin polarization on the oxygen sites hybridized with the square based pyramid Mn3+ ions. Furthermore we have discovered that the position of the Mn3+ ion directly influences the oxygen spin polarization.

A new experimental station at ESRF beamline ID20 is presented which allows magnetic and resonant X‐ray scattering experiments in the energy range 3–25 keV to be performed under extreme conditions. ...High magnetic field up to 10 T, high pressure up to 30 kbar combined with low temperatures down to 1.5 K are available and experiments can be performed at the M‐edges of actinide elements, L‐edges of lanthanides and K‐edges of transition metals.

We report on the study of the dynamics of long wavelength phason fluctuations in the i-AlPdMn icosahedral phase using coherent x-ray scattering. When measured with a coherent x-ray beam, the diffuse ...intensity due to phasons presents strong fluctuations or speckles pattern. From room temperature to 500 degrees C the speckle pattern is time independent. At 650 degrees C the time correlation of the speckle pattern exhibits an exponential time decay, from which a characteristic time tau is extracted. We find that tau is proportional to the square of the phason wavelength, which demonstrates that phasons are collective diffusive modes in quasicrystals, in agreement with theoretical predictions.

The magnetisation dynamics of the vortex core and Landau pattern of magnetic thin-film elements has been studied using holography with extended reference autocorrelation by linear differential ...operator (HERALDO). Here we present the first time-resolved x-ray measurements using this technique and investigate the structure and dynamics of the domain walls after excitation with nanosecond pulsed magnetic fields. It is shown that the average magnetisation of the domain walls has a perpendicular component that can change dynamically depending on the parameters of the pulsed excitation. In particular, we demonstrate the formation of wave bullet-like excitations, which are generated in the domain walls and can propagate inside them during the cyclic motion of the vortex core. Based on numerical simulations we also show that, besides the core, there are four singularities formed at the corners of the pattern. The polarisation of these singularities has a direct relation to the vortex core, and can be switched dynamically by the wave bullets excited with a magnetic pulse of specific parameters. The subsequent dynamics of the Landau pattern is dependent on the particular configuration of the polarisations of the core and the singularities.

Although all superconducting cuprates display charge-ordering tendencies, their low-temperature properties are distinct, impeding efforts to understand the phenomena within a single conceptual ...framework. across its ordering transition. We find that high-temperature charge correlations are unlocked from the wavevector of the spin correlations, signaling analogies to CDW phases in various other cuprates. This indicates that stripe order at low temperatures is stabilized by the coupling of otherwise independent charge and spin density waves, with important implications for the relation between charge and spin correlations in the cuprates.
