A hybrid mesoporous membrane is developed by forming surfactant‐templated mesoporous silica inside columnar alumina pores of an alumina membrane. Predominant formation of one‐dimensional silica ...nanochannels (channel diameter = 8 nm) is achieved by controlling the aging time and temperature for preparation of the precursor solution using Pluronic P123 as a template surfactant.

Almahata Sitta is a polymict breccia, consisting of many kinds of clasts. Here we present our mineralogical and petrological results on an EL3 fragment, MS-177 from Almahata Sitta. This fragment ...shows a typical type 3 chondritic texture, consisting of well-defined chondrules, isolated silicate minerals, and opaque nodules. Most chondrules are enstatite-rich with some having olivine. Although these components are typical of EL3 chondrites, the mineral abundances and compositions are different from the other EL3s. Diopside is unusually abundant in MS-177. On the other hand, perryite and daubreelite were not found. The major pyroxene is orthoenstatite, and the silica phase is quartz. Fe–Ni metal has relatively high P contents. Troilite is enriched in Cr and Mn. Keilite and buseckite are present in MS-177. From the mineralogy and texture, MS-177 experienced a high-temperature event under subsolidus conditions. Shock-induced heating for a short duration might explain this high-temperature event. We suggest that other E3 chondrites also experienced heating events under such subsolidus conditions on their parent bodies. On the other hand, the high abundance of diopside cannot be explained by a secondary thermal event and may have been a primary feature of MS-177, formed before accretion to the parent body.
Learning from serendipitous assembly, we have prepared a new family of designed 3d–4f Mn6Ln complexes. The dynamics of relaxation of the magnetization via alternating-current magnetic susceptibility ...for the new Mn6Ln complexes 1 (Ln = La), 2 (Ln = Tb), and 4 (Ln = Dy) have been studied down to 0.2 K.

Summary
Age, growth, and age at sexual maturity of the polkadot skate Dipturus chinensis, in the northern East China Sea were determined for a total of 614 specimens collected from April 2009 to ...December 2014. Vertebral centrum analysis was used to calculate the age of the skates. Annual band deposition was determined by marginal increment analysis. The von Bertalanffy growth model was fitted to the observed length‐at‐age data for each sex (males, L∞ = 76.8, k = 0.109, t0 = −1.28; females, L∞ = 83.1, k = 0.103, t0 = −1.20). Growth patterns of females and males were similar until the age of 6; thereafter, females grew larger than males. Maximum age recorded was 13 years for males and 15 years for females. Age at 50% sexual maturity was 8.22 years for males and 9.39 years for females. These results indicate that D. chinensis is slow growing, relatively long‐lived, and late maturing, and therefore vulnerable to exploitation.

A prototype C(6+) injector using a laser ion source has been developed for a compact synchrotron dedicated to carbon ion radiotherapy. The injector consists of a laser ion source and a 4-vane ...radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) linac. Ion beams are extracted from plasma and directly injected into the RFQ. A solenoid guides the low-energy beams into the RFQ. The RFQ is designed to accelerate high-intensity pulsed beams. A structure of monolithic vanes and cavities is adopted to reduce its power consumption. In beam acceleration tests, a solenoidal magnetic field set between the laser ion source and the RFQ helped increase both the peak currents before and after the RFQ by a factor of 4.
To evaluate the effect of atmospheric turbulence on a marine ecosystem, high-frequency samplings (two to four times per day) of a mesozooplankton community and the gut pigment of dominant copepods ...were performed at a fixed station in the Chukchi Sea from 10 to 25 September 2013. During the study period, a strong wind event (SWE) was observed on 18 September. After the SWE, the biomass of chlorophyll a (Chl a) increased, especially for micro-size (> 10 μm) fractions. The zooplankton abundance ranged from 23 610 to 56 809 ind. m−2 and exhibited no clear changes as a result of the SWE. In terms of abundance, calanoid copepods constituted the dominant taxa (mean: 57 %), followed by barnacle larvae (31 %). Within the calanoid copepods, small-sized Pseudocalanus spp. (65 %) and large-sized C. glacialis (30 %) dominated. In the population structure of C. glacialis, copepodid stage 5 (C5) dominated, and the mean copepodid stage did not vary with the SWE. The dominance of accumulated lipids in C5 and C6 females with immature gonads indicated that they were preparing for seasonal diapause. The gut pigment of C. glacialis C5 was higher at night and was correlated with ambient Chl a (Chl a, and a significant increase was observed after the SWE (2.6 vs. 4.5 ng pigment ind.−1). The grazing impact by C. glacialis C5 was estimated to be 4.14 mg C m−2 day−1, which corresponded to 0.5−4.6 % of the biomass of the micro-size phytoplankton. Compared with the metabolic food requirement, C. glacialis feeding on phytoplankton accounted for 12.6 % of their total food requirement. These facts suggest that C. glacialis could not maintain their population by feeding solely on phytoplankton and that other food sources (i.e., microzooplankton) must be important in autumn. As observed by the increase in gut pigment, the temporal phytoplankton bloom, which is enhanced by the atmospheric turbulence (SWE) in autumn, may have a positive effect on copepod nutrition.
