ObjectiveThis study investigated the sociodemographic, behavioural and psychological characteristics of socially isolated individuals during the ‘mild lockdown’ period of COVID-19 in Japan.DesignA ...cross-sectional study.SettingThe seven prefectures where the emergency declaration was first applied in Japan.ParticipantsWe collected data on 11 333 individuals (52.4% women, 46.3±14.6 years) living in the seven prefectures where the emergency declaration was first applied. The online survey was performed between 11 May and 12 May 2020, in the final phase of the state of emergency.Primary outcome measuresLubben Social Network Scale (LSNS-6)ResultsWe found that male sex (95% CI 1.60 to 1.98), middle age (95% CI 1.55 to 1.93) and lower income (eg, annual household income <2.0 million: 95% CI 2.29 to 3.54) predicted social isolation; being a student was a protective factor against social isolation (95% CI 0.26 to 0.62). In the comparisons of each item of the LSNS-6 by sociodemographic characteristics, men were more likely to have fewer people to talk to about their personal problems (95% CI −0.37 to −0.28) and to seek help from (95% CI −0.39 to −0.30), and the middle-aged group had a lower social network of friends. Additionally, social isolation was associated with decreased online interaction with familiar people (95% CI −1.28 to −1.13) and decreased optimistic thinking under mild lockdown (95% CI −0.97 to −0.86).ConclusionsWe identified the sociodemographic and psychological characteristics associated with social isolation under mild lockdown. These results are expected to be a useful resource for identifying which groups may require intervention to improve their social interactions in order to preserve their mental health during the pandemic.

Abstract Background Electronic gambling machines (EGMs) in gambling venues cause gambling-related harm and are a public health concern. This study focused on pachinko parlours as gambling venues and ...income-generating crimes as gambling-related harm. We aimed to verify whether income-generating crime rates increase in proximity to pachinko parlours and during the opening and post-closing periods of pachinko parlours relative to the pre-opening periods. Methods We used crime records spanning 6.5 years, including data on the opening and closing days of pachinko parlours for 6.5 years. We also sampled the addresses of convenience stores, bowling alleys, and households with official land prices all over Japan. The dependent variable was the daily income-generating crime incidence rate. Areas within 0.5 km, 0.5–1 km, 1–5 km, and 5–10 km radii of the pachinko parlours were the independent variables. The pre-, opening-, and post-closing periods of the pachinko parlours were also independent variables. The covariates included the number of convenience stores and always open pachinko parlours near pachinko parlours. Data were analysed using an analysis of variance (ANOVA) and covariance (ANCOVA). We also used differences-in-differences analysis (DD) to reveal the increase in income-generating crime rates in neighbourhoods exposed to the opening or closing of pachinko parlours. Results The daily income-generating crime incidence rate was significantly higher in areas within 0.5–1 km and 1–5 km radii of pachinko parlours than in those within 0.5 km and 5–10 km radii of them. The daily income-generating crime incidence rate was also significantly higher during the opening and post-closing periods than during the pre-opening period, even when controlling for the number of convenience stores and always open pachinko parlours. In particular, fraud crime rates increased with the opening and closing of pachinko parlours. Conclusions The highest income-generating crime incidence rate was observed within a 0.5–1 km and 1–5 km radius of pachinko parlours. The opening of pachinko parlours also increased income-generating crime incidence rates, which increased after closing. Pachinko parlours are considered to be creating public harm because the corporate activities of these parlours make the youth in their neighbourhood perpetrators of fraud and older adults its victims. Future research should examine the current findings using official crime records.

The primary motor cortex (M1) is crucial for motor learning; however, its interaction with other brain areas during motor learning remains unclear. We hypothesized that the fronto-parietal execution ...network (FPN) provides learning-related information critical for the flexible cognitive control that is required for practice. We assessed network-level changes during sequential finger tapping learning under speed pressure by combining magnetic resonance spectroscopy and task and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. There was a motor learning-related increase in preparatory activity in the fronto-parietal regions, including the right M1, overlapping the FPN and sensorimotor network (SMN). Learning-related increases in M1-seeded functional connectivity with the FPN, but not the SMN, were associated with decreased GABA/glutamate ratio in the M1, which were more prominent in the parietal than the frontal region. A decrease in the GABA/glutamate ratio in the right M1 was positively correlated with improvements in task performance (p = 0.042). Our findings indicate that motor learning driven by cognitive control is associated with local variations in the GABA/glutamate ratio in the M1 that reflects remote connectivity with the FPN, representing network-level motor sequence learning formations.

We theoretically predict the local density of nucleosomes on DNA brushes in a solution of molecules, which are necessary for transcription and the assembly of nucleosomes. Our theory predicts that in ...a confined space, DNA brushes show phase separation, where a region of relatively large nucleosomal occupancy coexists with a region of smaller nucleosomal occupancy. This phase separation is driven by an instability arising from the fact that the rate of transcription increases as the nucleosomal occupancy decreases due to the excluded volume interactions between nucleosomes and RNA polymerase during thermal diffusion and, in turn, nucleosomes are (in some cases) desorbed from DNA when RNA polymerase collides with nucleosomes during transcription. The miscibility phase diagram shows critical points, which are sensitive to the rate constants involved in transcription, the changes of interactions of DNA chain segments by assembling nucleosomes, and pressures that are applied to the brushes.

A mechanochemical approach using ball milling enables us to carry out organic reactions between solid-state reactants as well as those between liquid reactants. Under such mechanochemical conditions, ...a considerable reactivity difference between liquid and solid reactants is often observed, which may result from the poor-diffusivity of reactants in solids. The chemical reaction between reacting solids happens at their interface and forms a region rich in products. We here integrate the Landau theory of the solid-liquid phase transition into the Onsager's theory of irreversible processes to theoretically predict the reaction kinetics limited by the diffusion of reactants through the heterogeneous interfacial region. Our theory predicts that in the limit of low temperature, the reaction kinetics is mostly limited by the dissolution of reactant molecules into the product-rich phase, rather than the poor diffusivity in solids, and provides a quantitative relationship between the reaction rate and the equilibrium miscibility phase diagram.
The loop extrusion theory predicts that cohesin acts as a molecular motor that extrudes chromatin fibers to produce loops. Hi-C experiments have detected relatively high contact frequencies between ...superenhancers. These probably result from the fact that superenhancers are localized at condensates of transcriptional activators and coactivators. The contact frequency between superenhancers is enhanced by auxin treatment that removes cohesin from chromatin. Motivated by these experimental results, we here treat chromatin at the surface of a condensate as a loop extruding polymer brush. Our theory predicts that the lateral pressure generated by the brush decreases with decreasing the loading rate of cohesin. This is because loop extrusion actively transfers chain segments at the vicinity of the interface. Our theory thus predicts that the increase of contact frequency by auxin treatment results from the fact that suppressing the loop extrusion process induces the dissolution of molecular components to the nucleoplasm, decreasing the average distance between superenhancers.

Face-to-face imitation is a unique social interaction wherein a shared action is executed based on the feedback of the partner. Imitation by the partner is the feedback to the imitatee's action, ...resulting in sharing actions. The neural mechanisms of the shared representation of action during face-to-face imitation, the core of inter-subjectivity, are not well-known. Here, based on the predictive coding account, we hypothesized that the pair-specific forward internal model is the shared representation of action which is represented by the inter-individual synchronization of some portion of the mirror neuron system. Hyperscanning functional magnetic resonance imaging was conducted during face-to-face interaction in 16 pairs of participants who completed an immediate imitation task of facial expressions. Paired participants were alternately assigned to either an imitator or an imitatee who was prompted to express a happy, sad, or non-emotional face. While neural activation elicited by imitating and being imitated were distinct with little overlap, on-line imitative interaction enhanced inter-brain synchronization in the right inferior parietal lobule that correlated with the similarity in facial movement kinematic profile. This finding indicates a critical role of the right inferior parietal lobule in sharing representation of action as a pair-specific forward internal model through imitative interaction.

For countermeasures of deterioration in iron ore, development of pretreatment technology for high quality iron ore fine is critical issue in the sintering process. However with increasing small ...particles, sinter productivity is decreased by lower permeability due to increment of un-granulated particles or considerably large granules. Therefore understanding of granulation phenomena becomes more important issue. Since moisture of iron ore largely relates to the granulation behavior, it is necessary to reveal the effect of moisture on granulation rate for controlling the process. In this study, granulation tests were performed and the size distribution of granule was analyzed with probability model and new model considering granulation rate. Based on the calculation results, the effect of moisture on granulation rate was discussed.
Clinical studies have shown hyperuricemia strongly associated with insulin resistance as well as cardiovascular disease. Direct evidence of how high uric acid (HUA) affects insulin resistance in ...cardiomyocytes, but the pathological mechanism of HUA associated with cardiovascular disease remains to be clarified. We aimed to examine the effect of HUA on insulin sensitivity in cardiomyocytes and on insulin resistance in hyperuricemic mouse model. We exposed primary cardiomyocytes and a rat cardiomyocyte cell line, H9c2 cardiomyocytes, to HUA, then quantified glucose uptake with a fluorescent glucose analog, 2-NBDG, after insulin challenge and detected reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Western blot analysis was used to examine the levels of insulin receptor (IR), phosphorylated insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS1, Ser307) and phospho-Akt (Ser473). We monitored the impact of HUA on insulin resistance, insulin signaling and IR, phospho-IRS1 (Ser307) and phospho-Akt levels in myocardial tissue of an acute hyperuricemia mouse model established by potassium oxonate treatment. HUA inhibited insulin-induced glucose uptake in H9c2 and primary cardiomyocytes. It increased ROS production; pretreatment with N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), a ROS scavenger, reversed HUA-inhibited glucose uptake induced by insulin. HUA exposure directly increased the phospho-IRS1 (Ser307) response to insulin and inhibited that of phospho-Akt in H9C2 cardiomyocytes, which was blocked by NAC. Furthermore, the acute hyperuricemic mice model showed impaired glucose tolerance and insulin tolerance accompanied by increased phospho-IRS1 (Ser307) and inhibited phospho-Akt response to insulin in myocardial tissues. HUA inhibited insulin signaling and induced insulin resistance in cardiomyocytes in vitro and in vivo, which is a novel potential mechanism of hyperuricemic-related cardiovascular disease.
