Electrochemical sensing based on conventional rigid electrodes has great restrictions for characterizing biomolecules in deformed cells or soft tissues. The recent emergence of stretchable sensors ...allows electrodes to conformally contact to curved surfaces and perfectly comply with the deformation of living cells and tissues. This provides a powerful strategy to monitor biomolecules from mechanically deformed cells, tissues, and organisms in real time, and opens up new opportunities to explore the mechanotransduction process. In this minireview, we first summarize the fabrication of stretchable electrodes with emphasis on the nanomaterial‐enabled strategies. We then describe representative applications of stretchable sensors in the real‐time monitoring of mechanically sensitive cells and tissues. Finally, we present the future possibilities and challenges of stretchable electrochemical sensing in cell, tissue, and in vivo detection.

Owing to the sustainability, environmental friendliness, and structural diversity of biomass‐derived materials, extensive efforts have been devoted to use them as energy storage materials in ...high‐energy rechargeable batteries. A timely and comprehensive review from the structures to mechanisms will significantly widen this research field. Here, it starts with the operation mechanism of batteries, and it aims to summarize the latest advances for biomass‐derived carbon to achieve high‐energy battery materials, including activation carbon methods and the structural classification of biomass‐derived carbon materials from zero dimension, one dimension, two dimension, and three dimension. Each strategy starts with carefully selected examples and then moves to illustrate the underlying transport mechanism of electrons in the structure. In the end, challenges, strategies, and outlooks are pointed out for the future development of biomass‐derived carbon materials. Overall, this review will help researchers choose appropriate strategies to design biomass‐derived carbon materials, thereby promoting the application of biomass materials in battery design.

AbstractAlthough contractual governance and trust have been regarded as critical factors for explaining construction project performance, their interplay at different stages of project development is ...still lacking. From a dynamic perspective, the authors decompose contractual governance as contract completeness (term specificity and adaptability) and contract enforcement, while differentiating trust as ex ante trust and ex post trust. This study aims to investigate how each of the two facets of contractual governance and trust intertwine when managing construction projects and their impacts on performance. A questionnaire survey was conducted to collect data. The results show that ex ante trust positively affects contract completeness, contract enforcement, and ex post trust. Performance is positively influenced by term specificity, contract enforcement, and ex post trust, but negatively influenced by term adaptability. Regarding the interaction effects, contract completeness and ex post trust play complementary roles, while contract enforcement and ex post trust are substitutes. This study not only adds insights into project governance research but also provides implications for construction practitioners in deploying resources regarding governance mechanisms.

With the ever-growing development of multifunctional and miniature electronics, the exploring of high-power microwatt-milliwatt self-charging technology is highly essential. Flexible ...thermoelectric materials and devices, utilizing small temperature difference to generate electricity, exhibit great potentials to provide the continuous power supply for wearable and implantable electronics. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of flexible thermoelectric materials, including conducting polymers, organic/inorganic hybrid composites, and fully inorganic materials. The strategies and approaches for enhancing the thermoelectric properties of different flexible materials are detailed overviewed. Besides, we highlight the advanced strategies for the design of mechanical robust flexible thermoelectric devices. In the end, we point out the challenges and outlook for the future development of flexible thermoelectric materials and devices.

In the search for a highly active bulk material for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under acidic conditions, we developed a simple solvothermal approach to synthesize Pd2B nanosheets supported ...on carbon, which achieves a low overpotential for the HER, 15.3 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 22.5 mV dec−1 and a high exchange current density (j0) of 2.84 mA cm−2. The atomic structure evolution from Pd to Pd2B catalyst during synthesis is analyzed in detail via experimental and theoretical calculations, which shows that the slow insertion of B is assisted by the layer-by-layer fcc-to-hcp phase transition. Theoretical calculations further revealed that both the subsurface B and the lattice expansion after the hcp lattice formation play a key role to boost the HER activity. Since the Pd2B crystal is the global minimum in the Pd–B alloy, the success in the synthesis and demonstration of high HER activity paves the way towards further exploration of the catalytic performance for this stable metal boride material.
Phosphorene has attracted intense interest due to its unexpected high carrier mobility and distinguished anisotropic optoelectronic and electronic properties. In this work, we unraveled strain ...engineered phosphorene as a photocatalyst in the application of water splitting hydrogen production based on density functional theory calculations. Lattice dynamic calculations demonstrated the stability for such kind of artificial materials under different strains. The phosphorene lattice is unstable under compression strains and could be crashed, whereas phosphorene lattice shows very good stability under tensile strains. Further guarantee of the stability of phosphorene in liquid water is studied by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Tunable band gap from 1.54 eV at ambient condition to 1.82 eV under tensile strains for phosphorene is evaluated using parameter-free hybrid functional calculations. Appropriate band gaps and band edge alignments at certain pH demonstrate the potential application of phosphorene as a sufficiently efficient photocatalyst for visible light water splitting. We found that the strained phosphorene exhibits significantly improved photocatalytic properties under visible-light irradiation by calculating optical absorption spectra. Negative splitting energy of absorbed H2O indicates the water splitting on phosphorene is energy favorable both without and with strains.

Persuing both high energy and power density in one supercapacitor at low cost is very challenging to date. Here, we report the fabrication of nitorgen and Sulphur co-doped graphene (GN) modified ...lignin/polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon nanofiber (ACNFs) from mainly the biomass of lignin following a process of electrospinning, carbonization and activation. GN is used as nitrogen/sulphur immobilization agent to successfully capture HCN, NH3 and SO2 released from lignin and PAN during carbonization, and thus the content of heteroatoms of N and S in ACNFs is increased. The resulting ACNF with 0.30 wt% GN content possesses the maximum specific surface area of 2439 m2 g−1. It shows a typical three-dimensional porous network structures with the highest heteroatom doping content and high degree of crystallinity. The assembled supercapacitor exhibits superior electrochemical performance with ultra-high specific capacitance of 267.32 F g−1, low equivalent series resistance of 5.67 Ω, and outstanding cycling stability of 96.7% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles of charge/discharge in a two-electrode system with 6 mol L−1 KOH as electrolyte. Most importantly, the assembled symmetric supercapacitor shows that ACNFs doping with GNs increases the energy density from 4.12 to 9.28 Wh kg−1 and at the same time with barely reduced power density.

Anti-angiogenic therapy combined with chemotherapy could improve the outcomes of patients with platinum-resistant ovarian cancer. Apatinib is an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor that selectively ...inhibits VEGF receptor 2. We assessed the efficacy and safety of the combination therapy of apatinib and oral etoposide, considering the potential advantage of home administration without hospital admission, in patients with platinum-resistant or platinum-refractory ovarian cancer.
In this phase 2, single-arm, prospective study, we recruited patients aged 18–70 years with platinum-resistant or platinum-refractory ovarian cancer at the Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (China). The treatment consisted of apatinib at an initial dose of 500 mg once daily on a continuous basis, and oral etoposide at a dose of 50 mg once daily on days 1–14 of a 21-day cycle. Oral etoposide was administered for a maximum of six cycles. Treatment was continued until disease progression, patient withdrawal, or unacceptable toxic effects. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients achieving an objective response according to Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors, version 1.1. We used Simon's two-stage design, and analysed efficacy in the intention-to-treat and per-protocol populations. Safety analyses included enrolled patients who had received at least one dose of study medication, but excluded those without any safety data. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02867956.
Between Aug 10, 2016, and Nov 9, 2017, we screened 38 and enrolled 35 patients. At the data cutoff date (Dec 31, 2017), 20 (57%) patients had discontinued the study, and 15 (43%) patients remained on treatment. Objective responses were achieved in 19 (54%; 95% CI 36·6–71·2) of 35 patients in the intention-to-treat population and in 19 (61%; 42·2–78·2) of 31 patients in the per-protocol population. The most common grade 3 or 4 adverse events were neutropenia (17 50%), fatigue (11 32%), anaemia (ten 29%), and mucositis (eight 24%). Serious adverse events were reported in two patients who were admitted to hospital (one patient had anaemia and anorexia; the other patient had increased ascites due to disease progression). No treatment-related deaths were recorded.
The combination of apatinib with oral etoposide shows promising efficacy and manageable toxicities in patients with platinum-resistant or platinum-refractory ovarian cancer, and further study in phase 3 trials is warranted.

simulations based on density functional theory (DFT) not only show efficiency and reliability in new structure searching, but also can provide a reliable, efficient, and economic way for screening the photocatalytic property space. In this review, we summarize the recent developments in the field of water splitting using 2D materials from a theoretical perspective. We address that DFT-based simulations can fast screen the potential spaces of photocatalytic properties with the accuracy comparable to experiments, by investigating the effects of various physical/chemical perturbations. This, at last, will lead to the enhanced photocatalytic activities of 2D materials, and promote the development of photocatalysis.
