coordination cages were assembled by a design approach, where the proton conductivity was enhanced drastically by carefully mediating the auxiliary ligands.
Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is highly malignant with highly invasive and metastatic capabilities and poor prognosis. It is believed that the ESCC cancer stem-like cells (ECSLCs) are ...critical for tumorigenicity, invasion and metastasis of ESCC. However, the properties of ECSLCs vary with different markers used in isolation, so that new and more effective markers of ECSLCs need to be identified. This study aimed to estimate the potentiality of Cripto-1 (CR-1) as an ECSLC surface marker and investigate the clinical significance of CR-1 expression in ESCC.
ESCC cells with CR-1
or CR-1
were obtained by flow cytometry then their self-renewal capability and tumorigenicity were compared by colony and limiting dilution sphere formation analysis in vitro and xenograft in nude mice in vivo, respectively. Knockdown of CR-1 expression in ESCC cells was conducted with short hairpin RNA. Cell migration and invasion were examined by scratch test and matrigel transwell assay, respectively. Metastatic capability of ESCC cells was assayed by a mouse tail vein metastasis model. The levels of CR-1 expression in cancerous and paired adjacent normal tissues were assessed by IHC and qRT-RCR.
CR-1
subpopulation of ESCC cells isolated by FACS expressed high level of genes related to stemness and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and possessed high capacities of self-renewal, tumorigenesis, invasion and metastasis. Suppression of CR-1 expression significantly reduced the expression of stemness- and EMT-related genes and the capabilities of self-renewal in vitro, tumorigenicity and metastasis in vivo in ESCC cells. In the clinical ESCC specimens, the expression levels of CR-1 in cancerous tissues were positively correlated to TNM stage, invasive depth, and lymph node metastasis. Cox regression analysis indicated that CR-1 was an independent indicator of prognosis. The expression of CR-1 was found overlapping with aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1), an intracellular marker for ESCLCs, in ESCC cell lines and specimens.
CR-1 is a functional and cell surface ECSLC marker, and an independent prognostic indicator as well as a potential therapeutic target for ESCC.

Waste activated sludge contaminated with high levels of 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) is a major environmental concern. We have synthesized lignin-based biochar (LGBC) for use as a carbocatalyst in calcium peroxide (CP)-mediated sewage sludge pretreatment. Treatment of sewage sludge with 3.1 × 10−4 M of CP and 3.0 g L−1 of LGBC removed 76% of 4-NP in 12 h, which were 3.8 and 2.4 times higher than that with the LGBC and CP alone, respectively. There was synergy between reactive oxygen species (HO•, O2•−, and 1O2) and graphitic frameworks of LGBC. Pretreatment using the LGBC/CP system enhanced the release of biodegradable organic xenobiotics from the sludge. LGBC/CP enriched Proteobacteria and Thermostilla bacterial consortium (Planctomycetes) in the sludge and promoted 4-NP biodegradation. This work provides new insights into the chemical and biological mechanisms by which LGBC promotes 4-NP biodegradation in waste activated sludge via hydroxyl radical-driven carbon advanced oxidation pretreatment.

This work recovered the dredged sediment around Kaohsiung Harbor, Taiwan, for preparing lightweight aggregates (LWA), of which physicochemical properties as affected by the addition of ...basic-oxygen-furnace (BOF) slag and waste glass were investigated. LWA properties included water absorption, particle density, compressive strength, shrinkage, and microstructure of sintered pellets were evaluated to ensure feasibility of dredged harbor sediment reutilization technique. Results showed that adding appropriate amount of glass powders (~7%) to the mixtures of sediment and slag significantly reduced the water absorption (as low as 2.2%) of the sintered pellets and increase the compressive strength (as high as 23.1 MPa) of LWA, which were found to be controlled by open porosity and shrinkage. Excessive addition of glass (>10%) led to increase in internal pore sizes of the sintered pellets, and thus reduced the compressive strength. The alkali–silica reactivity (ASR) of the LWA was innocuous according to the ASTM C289 test. Sintering and glass addition improved the stability of heavy metal and environmental compatibility of the LWA. The recycling of waste sediment, slag, and glass for LWA production can provide an alternative for the disposal of dredge harbor sediment and has positive impact on waste reduction, which not only can reduce secondary contamination to the environment, but also can contribute to circular economy.

Herein, the development of a one-dimensional all-inorganic perovskite nanofibers produced via a common route of electrospun is studied. Indeed, a series of inorganic perovskite nanofibers are ...synthesized via an electrospun approach. The following CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br and I) nanofibers indicate composition-tunable photoluminescence (PL) emissions over the particular visible light window (from 450 to 670 nm), consisting of effective tunability of the optical properties. In this case, we present that the hybrids (CsPbX3) with various halide ratios, the method can be tunable in terms of morphology and optical. By tuning the composition of the CsPbX3 nanofibers, a power conversion efficiency of 7.79% under AM1.5G (cell area 0.5 cm2) has been approved. The all-inorganic nanofibers by electrospun has exhibited to be a valuable action to perform absorber layer that increase light benefit and charge collection for perovskite solar cells.

The key to breaking through the capacity limitation imposed by intercalation chemistry lies in the ability to harness more active sites that can reversibly accommodate more ions (e.g., Li+) and ...electrons within a finite space. However, excessive Li‐ion insertion into the Li layer of layered cathodes results in fast performance decay due to the huge lattice change and irreversible phase transformation. In this study, an ultrahigh reversible capacity is demonstrated by a layered oxide cathode purely based on manganese. Through a wealth of characterizations, it is clarified that the presence of low‐content Li2MnO3 domains not only reduces the amount of irreversible O loss; but also regulates Mn migration in LiMnO2 domains, enabling elastic lattice with high reversibility for tetrahedral sites Li‐ion storage in Li layers. This work utilizes bulk cation disorder to create stable Li‐ion‐storage tetrahedral sites and an elastic lattice for layered materials, with a reversible capacity of 600 mA h g−1, demonstrated in th range 0.6–4.9 V versus Li/Li+ at 10 mA g−1. Admittedly, discharging to 0.6 V might be too low for practical use, but this exploration is still of great importance as it conceptually demonstrates the limit of Li‐ions insertion into layered oxide materials.
A Li‐excess material based purely on manganese displaying ultrahigh capacities over hundreds of cycles is demonstrated. Through a wealth of characterization methods, it is clarified that Mn migration into the Li layer during the initial cycle stabilizes a large number of tetrahedral sites for extra and reversible Li‐ion storage in this layered compound.

Gastric cancer remains one of the most common deadly diseases and lacks effective targeted therapies. In the present study, we confirmed that the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 ...(STAT3) is highly expressed and associated with a poor prognosis in gastric cancer. We further identified a novel natural product inhibitor of STAT3, termed XYA-2, which interacts specifically with the SH2 domain of STAT3 (Kd= 3.29 μM) and inhibits IL-6-induced STAT3 phosphorylation at Tyr705 and nuclear translocation. XYA-2 inhibited the viability of seven human gastric cancer cell lines with 72-h IC50 values ranging from 0.5 to 0.7 μΜ. XYA-2 at 1 μΜ inhibited the colony formation and migration ability of MGC803 (72.6% and 67.6%, respectively) and MKN28 (78.5% and 96.6%, respectively) cells. In the in vivo studies, intraperitoneal administration of XYA-2 (10 mg/kg/day, 7 days/week) significantly suppressed 59.8% and 88.8% tumor growth in the MKN28-derived xenograft mouse model and MGC803-derived orthotopic mouse model, respectively. Similar results were obtained in a patient-derived xenograft (PDX) mouse model. Moreover, XYA-2 treatment extended the survival of mice bearing PDX tumors. The molecular mechanism studies based on transcriptomics and proteomics analyses indicated that XYA-2 might exert its anticancer activity by synergistically inhibiting the expression of MYC and SLC39A10, two downstream genes of STAT3 in vitro and in vivo. Together, these findings suggested that XYA-2 may be a potent STAT3 inhibitor for treating gastric cancer, and dual inhibition of MYC and SLC39A10 may be an effective therapeutic strategy for STAT3-activated cancer.

The incidence of adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction (AEG) has been rapidly increasing in recent decades, but its molecular alterations and subtypes are still obscure. Here, we conduct ...proteomics and phosphoproteomics profiling of 103 AEG tumors with paired normal adjacent tissues (NATs), whole exome sequencing of 94 tumor-NAT pairs, and RNA sequencing in 83 tumor-NAT pairs. Our analysis reveals an extensively altered proteome and 252 potential druggable proteins in AEG tumors. We identify three proteomic subtypes with significant clinical and molecular differences. The S-II subtype signature protein, FBXO44, is demonstrated to promote tumor progression and metastasis in vitro and in vivo. Our comparative analyses reveal distinct genomic features in AEG subtypes. We find a specific decrease of fibroblasts in the S-III subtype. Further phosphoproteomic comparisons reveal different kinase-phosphosubstrate regulatory networks among AEG subtypes. Our proteogenomics dataset provides valuable resources for understanding molecular mechanisms and developing precision treatment strategies of AEG.
