Diabetic retinopathy(DR) is an expanding global health problem, the exact mechanism of which has not yet been clarified clearly, new insights into retinal physiology indicate that diabetes-induced retinal dysfunction may be viewed as an impairment of the retinal neurovascular unit, including retinal ganglion cells, glial cells, endothelial cells, pericytes, and retinal pigment epithelium. Different retinal cells have unique structure and functions, while the interactions among which are less known. Cells are the basic unit of organism structure and function, their impairment could lead to abnormal physiological functions and even organ disorder. Considering the body is multi-dimension and the complexity of DR, one point or a single type of cell can’t be used to illustrate the mechanism of occurrence and development of DR. In this review, we provided a systematic and comprehensive elaboration of the cells that are involved in the process of DR. We underlined the importance of considering the neurovascular unit, not just retinal vascular and neural cells, in understanding the pathophysiology of DR. Our studies provided a better understanding of the pathological process in DR and provide a theoretical basis for further research.

The ability of polystyrene nanoparticles to facilitate the froth flotation of glass beads was correlated to the hydrophobicity of the nanoparticles. Contact angle measurements were used to probe the ...hydrophobicity of hydrophilic glass surfaces decorated with hydrophobic nanoparticles. Both sessile water drop advancing angles, θa, and attached air bubble receding angle measurements, θr, were performed. For glass surfaces saturated with adsorbed nanoparticles, flotation recovery, a measure of flotation efficiency, increased with increasing values of each type of contact angle. As expected, the advancing water contact angle on nanoparticle-decorated, dry glass surfaces increased with surface coverage, the area fraction of glass covered with nanoparticles. However, the nanoparticles were far more effective at raising the contact angle than the Cassie–Baxter prediction, suggesting that with higher nanoparticle coverages the water did not completely wet the glass surfaces between the nanoparticles. A series of polystyrene nanoparticles was prepared to cover a range of surface energies. Water contact angle measurements, θnp, on smooth polymer films formed from organic solutions of dissolved nanoparticles were used to rank the nanoparticles in terms of hydrophobicity. Glass spheres were saturated with adsorbed nanoparticles and were isolated by flotation. The minimum nanoparticle water contact angle to give high flotation recovery was in the range of 51° < θnpmin ≤ 85°.

Low-grade vanadiferous titanomagnetite ore (LVTM) is as an important mineral resource for sintering ore manufacturing. Furthermore, TiO2 has a significant effect on the sintering process of iron ore ...fines. The effects of TiO2 on the metallurgical properties, microstructure, and mineral composition of LVTM sinter were investigated by sintering pot tests, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and mineral phase microanalysis. The results were as follows: as the TiO2 content increased from 1.75% to 4.55%, the flame front speed and productivity decreased, while the reduction degradation index (RDI) and softening properties deteriorated. In addition, the tumbler index (TI) values reached a maximum at TiO2 = 1.75%. In addition, with increasing TiO2 content, an increase in the magnetite and perovskite phase, and a decrease in calcium ferrite and hematite were found with an increase in TiO2 content. Thus, the lower the TiO2 content, the better the quality of the sinter.

The V-Ti-Cr sinter shows complex mineral composition, with main mineral phases such as magnetite, hematite, silicate (dicalcium silicate, Ca-Fe olivine, glass), calcium and aluminum silico-ferrite (SFCA/SFCAI) and perovskite. Perovskite is notable because it lowers the V-Ti sinter strength and RDI. The well intergrowths between magnetite and SFCA/SFCAI, and the decrease in perovskite and secondary skeletal hematite are the key for improving TI and RDI. Finally, a comprehensive index was calculated, and the optimal V-Ti-Cr sinter basicity also for industrial application was 2.55.

Treatments based on stem cell-derived small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) have been explored as an alternative to stem cell transplantation-based therapies in periodontal regeneration. Dental ...follicle stem cells (DFSCs) have shown great potential for regenerative medicine applications. However, it is unclear whether sEVs derived from DFSCs (DFSCs-sEVs) could be used in periodontal regeneration. This study investigates whether DFSCs-sEVs could regenerate damaged periodontal tissue and the potential underlying mechanism.
DFSCs-sEVs were isolated and identified, and periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) were cocultured with the isolated sEVs. The effect of DFSCs-sEVs on the biological behaviour of PDLSCs was examined using EdU assay, CCK-8 assay, cell cycle analysis, wound healing, alizarin red staining, qRT-PCR, and western blot analysis. RNA sequencing and functional enrichment analysis were used to detect the signal pathway involved in the effect of DFSCs-sEVs on PDLSCs. PDLSCs were pretreated with ERK1/2 or p38 MAPK inhibitors to investigate the possible involvement of the ERK1/2 and p38 MAPK pathways. Additionally, DFSCs-sEVs were combined with collagen sponges and transplanted into the periodontal defects in SD rats, and then, pathological changes in periodontal tissue were examined using haematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining and micro-CT.
PDLSCs could internalize DFSCs-sEVs, thereby enhancing the proliferation assessed using EdU assay, CCK-8 assay and cell cycle analysis. DFSCs-sEVs significantly enhanced the migration of PDLSCs. DFSCs-sEVs promoted osteogenic differentiation of PDLSCs, showing deep Alizarin red staining, upregulated osteogenic genes (RUNX2, BSP, COL1), and upregulated protein expression (RUNX2, BSP, COL1, ALP). We found that p38 MAPK signalling was activated via phosphorylation. Inhibition of this signalling pathway with a specific inhibitor (SB202190) partially weakened the enhanced proliferation. After DFSCs-sEVs transplantation, new periodontal ligament-like structures and bone formation were observed in the damaged periodontal area in rats. Labelled DFSCs-sEVs were observed in the newly formed periodontal ligament and soft tissue of the defect area.
Our study demonstrated that DFSCs-sEVs promoted periodontal tissue regeneration by promoting the proliferation, migration, and osteogenic differentiation of PDLSCs. The effect of DFSCs-sEVs in promoting PDLSCs proliferation may be partially attributed to the activation of p38 MAPK signalling pathway. DFSCs-sEVs provide us with a novel strategy for periodontal regeneration in the future.

Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) causes severe respiratory disease in humans with a case fatality rate of over 39%, and poses a considerable threat to public health. A lack of ...approved vaccine or drugs currently constitutes a roadblock in controlling disease outbreak and spread. In this study, we generated MERS-CoV VLPs using the baculovirus expression system. Electron microscopy and immunoelectron microscopy results demonstrate that MERS-CoV VLPs are structurally similar to the native virus. Rhesus macaques inoculated with MERS-CoV VLPs and Alum adjuvant induced virus-neutralizing antibodies titers up to 1:40 and induced specific IgG antibodies against the receptor binding domain (RBD), with endpoint titers reaching 1:1,280. MERS-CoV VLPs also elicited T-helper 1 cell (Th1)-mediated immunity, as measured by ELISpot. These data demonstrate that MERS-CoV VLPs have excellent immunogenicity in rhesus macaques, and represent a promising vaccine candidate.
This is the first report describing a new technology where hydrophobic nanoparticles adsorb onto much larger, hydrophilic mineral particle surfaces to facilitate attachment to air bubbles in ...flotation. The adsorption of 46 nm cationic polystyrene nanoparticles onto 43 μm diameter glass beads, a mineral model, facilitates virtually complete removal of the beads by flotation. As little as 5% coverage of the bead surfaces with nanoparticles promotes high flotation efficiencies. The maximum force required to pull a glass bead from an air bubble interface into the aqueous phase was measured by micromechanics. The pull-off force was 1.9 μN for glass beads coated with nanoparticles, compared to 0.0086 μN for clean beads. The pull-off forces were modeled using Scheludko’s classical expression. We propose that the bubble/bead contact area may not be dry (completely dewetted). Instead, for hydrophobic nanoparticles sitting on a hydrophilic surface, it is possible that only the nanoparticles penetrate the air/water interface to form a three-phase contact line. We present a new model for pull-off forces for such a wet contact patch between the bead and the air bubble. Contact angle measurements of both nanoparticle coated glass and smooth films from dissolved nanoparticles were performed to support the modeling.

The influence of fuel level on Russian vanadiferous titanomagnetite sinter properties, productivity, and mineralogy are researched by sintering pot testing, metallographic microscopy, scanning ...electron microscopy analysis, and energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS) analysis. A comprehensive index is evaluated in conjunction with the same indexes and significance coefficient as that in the Panzhihua Iron and Steel Group. Results show that with the increasing fuel level from 3.5% to 6.0%, flame front speed, yield, tumbling test index (TI), and productivity, all first increase and then decrease. The low temperature reduction degradation index (RDI+3.15) and softening zone (ΔT) gradually increase while the RI and starting temperature of softening (T10), and ending temperature of softening (T40) decrease with increasing fuel levels from 3.5% to 6.0%. With the increase of fuel level from 3.5% to 6.0%, the content of FeO, SiO2, and MgO increase, while TiO2 shows a decrease. For the same increase in fuel level, the number of pores and calcium ferrite and hematite decrease but the silicate increases. In addition, in the fuel level range of 3.5% to 5.5%, magnetite correspondingly increases but then shows a drop after 5.5%. Moreover, when the fuel level increases to greater than 5.0%, FeOx and fayalite quickly increase and a small amount of metallic iron appears under the fuel level of 6.0%. Overall, the optimal fuel level under current production conditions and indicator selection is 4.0%.
