Topological insulators are materials that behave as insulators in the bulk and as conductors at the edge or surface due to the particular configuration of their bulk band dispersion. However, up to ...date possible practical applications of this band topology on materials' bulk properties have remained abstract. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a topological bulk laser. We pattern semiconductor nanodisk arrays to form a photonic crystal cavity showing topological band inversion between its interior and cladding area. In-plane light waves are reflected at topological edges forming an effective cavity feedback for lasing. This band-inversion-induced reflection mechanism induces single-mode lasing with directional vertical emission. Our topological bulk laser works at room temperature and reaches the practical requirements in terms of cavity size, threshold, linewidth, side-mode suppression ratio and directionality for most practical applications according to Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and other industry standards. We believe this bulk topological effect will have applications in near-field spectroscopy, solid-state lighting, free-space optical sensing and communication.

Amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation in the brain is a pivotal event in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and its clearance from the brain is impaired in sporadic AD. Previous studies suggest that ...approximately half of the Aβ produced in the brain is cleared by transport into the periphery. However, the mechanism and pathophysiological significance of peripheral Aβ clearance remain largely unknown. The kidney is thought to be responsible for Aβ clearance, but direct evidence is lacking. In this study, we investigated the impact of unilateral nephrectomy on the dynamic changes in Aβ in the blood and brain in both humans and animals and on behavioural deficits and AD pathologies in animals. Furthermore, the therapeutic effects of the diuretic furosemide on Aβ clearance via the kidney were assessed. We detected Aβ in the kidneys and urine of both humans and animals and found that the Aβ level in the blood of the renal artery was higher than that in the blood of the renal vein. Unilateral nephrectomy increased brain Aβ deposition; aggravated AD pathologies, including Tau hyperphosphorylation, glial activation, neuroinflammation, and neuronal loss; and aggravated cognitive deficits in APP/PS1 mice. In addition, chronic furosemide treatment reduced blood and brain Aβ levels and attenuated AD pathologies and cognitive deficits in APP/PS1 mice. Our findings demonstrate that the kidney physiologically clears Aβ from the blood, suggesting that facilitation of Aβ clearance via the kidney represents a novel potential therapeutic approach for AD.

Previous studies suggest that gut microbiota is associated with neuropsychiatric disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and depression. However, whether the ...composition and diversity of gut microbiota is altered in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains largely unknown. In the present study, we collected fecal samples from 43 AD patients and 43 age- and gender-matched cognitively normal controls. 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing technique was used to analyze the microbiota composition in feces. The composition of gut microbiota was different between the two groups. Several bacteria taxa in AD patients were different from those in controls at taxonomic levels, such as Bacteroides, Actinobacteria, Ruminococcus, Lachnospiraceae, and Selenomonadales. Our findings suggest that gut microbiota is altered in AD patients and may be involved in the pathogenesis of AD.
Spin-momentum locking is a direct consequence of bulk topological order and provides a basic concept to control a carrier's spin and charge flow for new exotic phenomena in condensed matter physics. ...However, up to date the research on spin-momentum locking solely focuses on its in-plane transport properties. Here, we report an emerging out-of-plane radiation feature of spin-momentum locking in a non-Hermitian topological photonic system and demonstrate a high performance topological vortex laser based on it. We find that the gain saturation effect lifts the degeneracy of the paired counterpropagating spin-momentum-locked edge modes enabling lasing from a single topological edge mode. The near-field spin and orbital angular momentum of the topological edge mode lasing has a one-to-one far-field radiation correspondence. The methodology of probing the near-field topology feature by far-field lasing emission can be used to study other exotic phenomena. The device can lead to applications in superresolution imaging, optical tweezers, free-space optical sensing, and communication.

•GA-BP neural network was used to model skid resistance of epoxy asphalt mixture.•A comprehensive sensitivity analysis method is proposed based on neural network.•The designed GA-BP model has shown ...good agreement with experimental results.•Skid resistance has a significant negative correlation with BC and κ-value.•Bulk specific gravity is the most important skid-resistant influencing factor.
The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between long-term skid resistance of epoxy asphalt mixture (EAM) and multiple engineering parameters involving mixture design parameters, construction parameters and operation parameters. Firstly, a database of 124 data sets was obtained, including optimal binder content, aggregate gradation characteristics, bulk specific gravity, air-void content and load repetitions for input parameters, and long-term skid resistance of EAM simulated by an accelerated pavement test for output. Secondly, using the database, an optimized GA-BP neural network model (i.e. GA-BP model) was established to predict the long-term skid resistance, and then a comprehensive sensitivity analysis was conducted to explore the effect of input parameters on the skid-resistant evolution based on the trained neural network. Results show that the optimized GA-BP model can effectively predict the long-term skid resistance of EAM, and the long-term skid resistance has a significant negative correlation with binder content and shape characteristic of aggregate gradation. In addition, bulk specific gravity is the most important factor influencing the long-term skid resistance, and also has the most remarkable interaction effect with other input parameters.

Modern electronic and photonic devices rely on single-crystalline thin film semiconductors for high performance and reproducibility. The emerging halide perovskites have extraordinary electronic and ...photonic properties and can be synthesized via low cost solution-based methods. They have been used in a variety of devices with performance approaching or over the devices based on conventional materials. However, their solution based growth method is intrinsically challenge to grow large scale single-crystalline thin film due to the random nucleation and isotropous growth of the crystal. Here, we report the growth of centimeter-scale perovskite single-crystalline thin films by controlling the nucleation density and growth rate of the crystal under a spatially confined growth condition. The hydrophobic treatment on substrates inhibits nucleation and accelerates the growth of single-crystalline thin film, providing enough space for initial nucleus growing up quickly without touching each other. Single-crystalline perovskite thin-film with an aspect ratio of 1000 (1 cm in side length, 10 μm in thickness) has been successfully grown. The low trap density and the high mobility of the as-grown thin film show a high crystallinity. The photodetector based on the perovskite thin film has achieved a gain ~ 10

, benefitting from the short transit time of the carries due to the high mobility and thin thickness of the active layer. Our work opens up a new route to grow large scale perovskite single-crystalline thin films, providing a platform to develop high- performance devices.
The impact of the dietary potential inflammatory effect on diabetic kidney disease (DKD) has not been adequately investigated. The present study aimed to explore the association between dietary ...inflammatory index (DII) and DKD in US adults.
This is a cross-sectional study.
Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2016) were used. DII was calculated from 24-h dietary recall interviews. DKD was defined as diabetes with albuminuria, impaired glomerular filtration rate or both. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models were adopted to evaluate the associations.
Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2016) were used, which can provide the information of participants.
Four thousand two-hundred and sixty-four participants were included in this study. The adjusted OR of DKD was 1·04 (95 % CI 0·81, 1·36) for quartile 2, 1·24 (95 % CI 0·97, 1·59) for quartile 3 and 1·64 (95 % CI 1·24, 2·17) for quartile 4, respectively, compared with the quartile 1 of DII. A linear dose-response pattern was observed between DII and DKD (
= 0·73). In the stratified analyses, the OR for quartile 4 of DII were significant among adults with higher educational level (OR 1·83, 95 % CI 1·26, 2·66) and overweight or obese participants (OR 1·67, 95 % CI 1·23, 2·28), but not among the corresponding another subgroup. The interaction effects between DII and stratified factors on DKD were not statistically significant (all
values for interactions were >0·05).
Our findings suggest that a pro-inflammatory diet, shown by a higher DII score, is associated with increased odd of DKD.
•We propose to mine parking transaction data to estimate time-varying parking occupancy in a cheap and effective way.•A probabilistic payment model is proposed to simulate individual payment and ...parking behavior.•Payment behavior can be learned from analyzing transaction data, and can provide insights for enforcement patrol.•There exists an effective granularity, namely the highest spatial resolution for this model to perform reliably.
Over 95% of on-street paid parking stalls are managed by parking meters or kiosks. By analyzing meter transactions data, this paper provides a methodology to estimate on-street time-varying parking occupancy and understand payment behavior in an effective and inexpensive way. We propose a probabilistic payment model to simulate individual payment and parking behavior for each parker. Aggregating the payment/parking of all transactions leads to time-varying occupancy estimation. Two data sets are used to evaluate the methodology, parking spaces near Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) campus, and near the Civic Center in San Francisco. The proposed model generally provides reliable estimations of occupancies at a low error rate and substantially outperforms other naive models in the literature. From the results of the experiments we find that people generally tend to slightly underpay in CMU area, whereas for Civic Center area, payment behavior varies by time of day and day of week. For Fridays, people generally tend to overpay and stay longer in the mornings, compared to underpaying and parking for shorter durations in the late afternoons. Parkers’ payment behavior, in general, is more variable and noisier around Civic Center than around CMU. Moreover, we explore the effective granularity, defined as the highest spatial resolution for this model to perform reliably. For CMU areas, the effective granularity is around 10–20 spaces for each block of streets, while it is 150–200 spaces for the Civic Center area due to more random parking behavior.

Rooftop photovoltaics (RPVs) are crucial in achieving energy transition and climate goals, especially in cities with high building density and substantial energy consumption. Estimating RPV carbon ...mitigation potential at the city level of an entire large country is challenging given difficulties in assessing rooftop area. Here, using multi-source heterogeneous geospatial data and machine learning regression, we identify a total of 65,962 km
rooftop area in 2020 for 354 Chinese cities, which represents 4 billion tons of carbon mitigation under ideal assumptions. Considering urban land expansion and power mix transformation, the potential remains at 3-4 billion tons in 2030, when China plans to reach its carbon peak. However, most cities have exploited less than 1% of their potential. We provide analysis of geographical endowment to better support future practice. Our study provides critical insights for targeted RPV development in China and can serve as a foundation for similar work in other countries.
•One skeleton-dense epoxy asphalt mixture was designed and evaluated.•The designed mixture meets the operating requirements of steel bridge pavement.•The designed mixture has superior rutting ...resistance and anti-fatigue performance.•The designed mixture could significantly improve the pavement skid-resistance.
To improve the skid-resistance of epoxy asphalt concrete pavement for the steel bridge deck, an epoxy asphalt mixture with skeleton-dense structure was proposed. This paper carries out a laboratory study on the design and performance evaluation of skeleton-dense epoxy asphalt mixture. Firstly, the mixture was designed through a volume design method, and the pavement performance was investigated to evaluate the applicability of the skeleton-dense epoxy asphalt mixture for the steel bridge pavement. Secondly, the skid-resistance of the skeleton-dense epoxy asphalt mixture was evaluated, including the initial skid-resistance, long-term skid-resistance and skid-resistance under the inclement weather condition. The long-term skid-resistance attenuation law was simulated by the small traffic load simulation system MMLS3, and the skid-resistance life was predicted. The skid-resistance attenuation law under the rainy and freezing weather was investigated in the laboratory, and the influence of water film thickness, different ice situations on the pavement skid-resistance was analyzed. Finally, gray correlation analysis method was applied to the comprehensive evaluation of pavement skid-resistance. Results indicate that the proposed mixture could meet the operating requirements of steel bridge pavement and dramatically improve the skid-resistance of epoxy asphalt concrete pavement.
