Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of cornel iridoid glycoside (CIG), an ingredient extracted from a traditional Chinese herb Cornus officinalis , on neurological function ...and neurogenesis after ischemic stroke. CIG was intragastrically administered to rats in doses of 20, 60 and 180 mg/kg/day, starting 3 h after the onset of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). The behavioral test was performed by using the modified neurological severity score (mNSS). Rats were sacrificed 7, 14, or 28 days after ischemia occurred. Neurogenesis and angiogenesis were detected by using immunofluorescence staining. The messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptor Flk-1 was measured by RT-PCR, and the protein expression of VEGF was determined by Western blotting analysis. The treatment with CIG at the doses of 60 and 180 mg/kg/day significantly improved neurological function, and increased the number of bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU)-positive cells and nestin-positive cells in the subventricular zone of rats 7, 14 and 28 days after ischemia. The number of newly mature neurons and blood vessels in striatum, as indicated by BrdU/NeuN and vWF immunoreactivity, respectively, was also increased in CIG-treated rats 28 days after stroke. CIG treatment obviously enhanced the mRNA expression of VEGF and its receptor Flk-1 and the protein expression of VEGF 7 and 28 days after ischemia. The results indicated that CIG promoted neurogenesis and angiogenesis and improved neurological function after ischemia in rats, and the mechanism might be related to CIG's increasing VEGF and Flk-1 in the brain.

Sinopodophyllum hexandrum is an alpine medicinal plant that produces the anticancer compound podophyllotoxin (PPT). Although a positive relationship between PPT content and altitude has been proved ...and low temperature enhances plant growth and PPT accumulation has also been revealed, the role of UV radiation in regulating growth and PPT accumulation is still unclear
In this study, morphophysiological traits, metabolites content and related genes expression were investigated by exposing S. hexandrum seedlings to treatment with UV‐B radiation.
The results showed that the contents of soluble sugars and flavonoids, and the expression levels of genes involved in glycometabolism (XET and β‐1,3‐glucanase) and flavonoid biosynthesis (PAL,C4H,4CL,CHS1 and DTX41) were enhanced in response to UV‐B compared to CK. Moreover, genes involved in stress tolerance (MYB, WRKY,APX3 and EX2) were also upregulated in response to UV‐B radiation. Although the whole plant biomass exhibited slightly increased values that depended largely on root development, the contents of chlorophyll and PPT and the expression levels of genes involved in photosynthesis (matK, ndhF,rbcL and ycf5) and PPT biosynthesis (C3H,CCoAMT,CCR,CAD, DPO, PLR,SDH, CPY719A23,OMT3,CYP71CU1,OMT1and 2‐ODD) were significantly decreased in response to UV‐B compared to CK.
It can be concluded that UV‐B radiation promotes soluble sugars and flavonoids accumulation, but inhibits PPT biosynthesis in S. hexandrum.
UV‐B radiation promotes flavonoids accumulation and root length, while inhibits anticancer compound podophyllotoxin (PPT) biosynthesis and plant growth

LncRNAs have critical roles in various biological processes ranging from embryonic development to human diseases, including cancer progression, although their detailed mechanistic functions remain ...illusive. The lncRNA linc-ROR has been shown to contribute to the maintenance of induced pluripotent stem cells and embryonic stem cells. In this study, we discovered that linc-ROR was upregulated in breast tumor samples, and ectopic overexpression of linc-ROR in immortalized human mammary epithelial cells induced an epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) program. Moreover, we showed that linc-ROR enhanced breast cancer cell migration and invasion, which was accompanied by generation of stem cell properties. Contrarily, silencing of linc-ROR repressed breast tumor growth and lung metastasis in vivo. Mechanistically, our data revealed that linc-ROR was associated with miRNPs and functioned as a competing endogenous RNA to mi-205. Specifically, linc-ROR prevented the degradation of mir-205 target genes, including the EMT inducer ZEB2. Thus our results indicate that linc-ROR functions as an important regulator of EMT and can promote breast cancer progression and metastasis through regulation of miRNAs. Potentially, the findings of this study implicate the relevance of linc-ROR as a possible therapeutic target for aggressive and metastatic breast cancers.
This paper presents an integrated bottom-up approach aimed at helping those dealing with strategical analysis of installation of Building Integrated Photo Voltaic (BIPV) to estimate the electricity ...production potential along with the energy needs of urban buildings at the district scale. On the demand side, hourly energy profiles are generated using dynamic building simulation taking into account actual urban morphologies. On the supply side, electricity generated from the system is predicted considering both the direct and indirect components of solar radiation as well as local climate variables. Python-based Algorithm editor Grasshopper is used to interlink four types of modelling and simulation tools as 1) generation of 3-D model, 2) solar radiation analysis, 3) formatting weather files (TMY data set) and 4) dynamic energy demand. The method has been demonstrated for a cluster of 20 buildings located in the Yasar University in Izmir (Turkey), for which it is found the BIPV system could achieve an annual renewable share of 23%, in line with the Renewable Energy Directive target of 20%. Quantitatively-compared demand and supply information at hourly time step shows that only some energy needs can be met by BIPV, so there is a need for an appropriate matching strategy to better exploit the renewable energy potential.

•Effective distribution of airflow for indoor built environments is research focus.•Theory and practical applications of air distribution methods are reviewed.•Measuring and evaluating methods of air ...distribution are discussed.
Ventilation and air distribution methods are important for indoor thermal environments and air quality. Effective distribution of airflow for indoor built environments with the aim of simultaneously offsetting thermal and ventilation loads in an energy efficient manner has been the research focus in the past several decades. Based on airflow characteristics, ventilation methods can be categorized as fully mixed or non-uniform. Non-uniform methods can be further divided into piston, stratified and task zone ventilation. In this paper, the theory, performance, practical applications, limitations and solutions pertaining to ventilation and air distribution methods are critically reviewed. Since many ventilation methods are buoyancy driving that confines their use for heating mode, some methods suitable for heating are discussed. Furthermore, measuring and evaluating methods for ventilation and air distribution are also discussed to give a comprehensive framework of the review.

Pinus massoniana is a recalcitrant tree species for rooting in vitro. We rejuvenated 26-year-old P. massoniana trees by successive grafting. Rooting rates of rejuvenated shoots were > 83.1% after ...rooting induction. We compared endogenous levels of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellins (GAs) and zeatin-riboside (ZR), and the rhizogenesis ability of axillary shoots of mature and rejuvenated materials in vitro, i.e., somaplants and grafts. Enhancement of the rooting ability of mature materials in vitro following somatic embryogenesis or repeated grafting onto juvenile rootstocks was accompanied by increased IAA and GAs levels, and by decreased ABA levels in scions used as starting material for micropropagation in vitro. Successive subcultures did not influence the rooting ability of shoots from untreated mature material. Rooting ability of shoots in vitro, however, gradually increased with subculture frequency during repeated subculturing in grafting materials. The IAA:ABA ratio in shoots in vitro after grafting five times, and consequently capable of root organogenesis, was higher than in shoots of untreated mature material incapable of root organogenesis in vitro. A high IAA:ABA ratio was detected in scions of somaplants that were capable of rooting in vitro despite subculture times. We found that the endogenous IAA:ABA ratio is a reliable marker for the recovery of root organogenesis in vitro after rejuvenating treatments for mature P. massoniana trees.

Olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) are glia reported to sustain the continuous axon extension and successful topographic targeting of the olfactory receptor neurons responsible for the sense of smell ...(olfaction). Due to this distinctive property, OECs have been trialed in human cell transplant therapies to assist in the repair of central nervous system injuries, particularly those of the spinal cord. Though many studies have reported neurological improvement, the therapy remains inconsistent and requires further improvement. Much of this variability stems from differing olfactory cell populations prior to transplantation into the injury site. While some studies have used purified cells, others have used unpurified transplants. Although both preparations have merits and faults, the latter increases the variability between transplants received by recipients. Without a robust purification procedure in OEC transplantation therapies, the full potential of OECs for spinal cord injury may not be realised.
This paper proves that the linear elastic behavior of the material with inhomogeneous pre-stresses can be described by the Willis equations. In this case, the additional terms in the Willis ...equations, compared with the classical linear elastic equations for homogeneous media, are related to the gradient of pre-stresses. In this way, the material length scale is naturally incorporated in the framework of continuum mechanics. All these findings also coincide with the results of transformation elastodynamics, so that they can meet the requirement of the principle of material objectivity and the principle of general invariance.
•The presence of inhomogeneous pre-stresses results in the Willis equations.•The material length scale is naturally incorporated in the Willis equations.•The Willis equations are generally valid for both quasi-static and dynamic problems.
