Summary
Photosynthetic microalgae can capture solar energy and convert it to bioenergy and biochemical products. In nature or industrial processes, microalgae live together with bacterial communities ...and may maintain symbiotic relationships. In general interactions, microalgae exude dissolved organic carbon that becomes available to bacteria. In return, the bacteria remineralize sulphur, nitrogen and phosphorous to support the further growth of microalgae. In specific interactions, heterotrophic bacteria supply B vitamins as organic cofactors or produce siderophores to bind iron, which could be utilized by microalgae, while the algae supply fixed carbon to the bacteria in return. In this review, we focus on mutualistic relationship between microalgae and bacteria, summarizing recent studies on the mechanisms involved in microalgae–bacteria symbiosis. Symbiotic bacteria on promoting microalgal growth are described and the relevance of microalgae–bacteria interactions for biofuel production processes is discussed. Symbiotic microalgae–bacteria consortia could be utilized to improve microalgal biomass production and to enrich the biomass with valuable chemical and energy compounds. The suitable control of such biological interactions between microalgae and bacteria will help to improve the microalgae‐based biomass and biofuel production in the future.

Intestinal IgA, which is regulated by gut microbiota, has a crucial role in maintenance of intestinal homeostasis and in protecting the intestines from inflammation. However, the means by which ...microbiota promotes intestinal IgA responses remain unclear. Emerging evidence suggests that the host can sense gut bacterial metabolites in addition to pathogen-associated molecular patterns and that recognition of these small molecules influences host immune response in the intestines and beyond. Our studies thus identified a new pathway by which microbiota promotes intestinal IgA response through its metabolites.

We investigated a neural reflex that controls the strength of inflammatory responses to immune challenge – the inflammatory reflex. In anaesthetized rats challenged with intravenous lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 60 μg kg−1), we found strong increases in plasma levels of the key inflammatory mediator tumour necrosis factor α (TNFα) 90 min later. Those levels were unaffected by previous bilateral cervical vagotomy, but were enhanced approximately 5‐fold if the greater splanchnic sympathetic nerves had been cut. Sham surgery had no effect, and plasma corticosterone levels were unaffected by nerve sections, so could not explain this result. Electrophysiological recordings demonstrated that efferent neural activity in the splanchnic nerve and its splenic branch was strongly increased by LPS treatment. Splenic nerve activity was dependent on inputs from the splanchnic nerves: vagotomy had no effect on the activity in either nerve. Together, these data demonstrate that immune challenge with this dose of LPS activates a neural reflex that is powerful enough to cause an 80% suppression of the acute systemic inflammatory response. The efferent arm of this reflex is in the splanchnic sympathetic nerves, not the vagi as previously proposed. As with other physiological responses to immune challenge, the afferent pathway is presumptively humoral: the present data show that vagal afferents play no measurable part. Because inflammation sits at the gateway to immune responses, this reflex could play an important role in immune function as well as inflammatory diseases.

In a visible light communication (VLC) system, the light-emitting diode (LED) is the major source of nonlinearity. The nonlinear effects in the VLC system are different from the conventional wireless ...communications system. The channel separation in the VLC system is significantly larger than the signal bandwidth; thus, the adjacent channel interference is not an issue. Predistortion technique may not be a cost-efficient approach since it needs additional feedback physical circuits at the transmitter. In this paper, we propose a postdistortion technique to estimate and compensate for the LED's nonlinearity at the receiver. The postdistortion technique only needs some additional computational resources. In addition, the proposed approach significantly improves the error-vector-magnitude and bit-error-rate performance of the VLC system. Simulation results validate the theoretical analysis.

Rapid advances in synthetic biology are driving the development of genetically engineered microbes as therapeutic agents for a multitude of human diseases, including cancer. The immunosuppressive ...microenvironment of solid tumors, in particular, creates a favorable niche for systemically administered bacteria to engraft and release therapeutic payloads. However, such payloads can be harmful if released outside the tumor in healthy tissues where the bacteria also engraft in smaller numbers. To address this limitation, we engineer therapeutic bacteria to be controlled by focused ultrasound, a form of energy that can be applied noninvasively to specific anatomical sites such as solid tumors. This control is provided by a temperature-actuated genetic state switch that produces lasting therapeutic output in response to briefly applied focused ultrasound hyperthermia. Using a combination of rational design and high-throughput screening we optimize the switching circuits of engineered cells and connect their activity to the release of immune checkpoint inhibitors. In a clinically relevant cancer model, ultrasound-activated therapeutic microbes successfully turn on in situ and induce a marked suppression of tumor growth. This technology provides a critical tool for the spatiotemporal targeting of potent bacterial therapeutics in a variety of biological and clinical scenarios.
The dental follicle (DF) differentiates into the periodontal ligament. In addition, it may be the precursor of other cells of the periodontium, including osteoblasts and cementoblasts. We ...hypothesized that stem cells may be present in the DF and be capable of differentiating into cells of the periodontium. Stem cells were identified in the DF of the rat first mandibular molar by Hoechst staining, alkaline phosphatase staining, and expression of side-population stem cell markers. These cells were shown to be able to differentiate into osteoblasts/cementoblasts, adipocytes, and neurons. Treating the DF cell population with doxorubicin, followed by incubation in an adipogenesis medium, suggested that the adipocytes originated from stem cells. Thus, a possibly puripotent stem cell population is present in the rat DF.

Midkines are heparin‐binding growth factors involved in a wide range of biological processes. Originally identified as retinoic acid inducible genes, midkines are widely expressed during ...embryogenesis with particularly high levels in the developing nervous system. During postnatal stages, midkine expression generally ceases but is often up‐regulated under disease conditions, most notably those affecting the nervous system. Midkines are known as neurotrophic factors, as they promote neurite outgrowth and neuron survival in cell culture. Surprisingly, however, mouse embryos deficient for midkine (knockout mice) are phenotypically normal, which suggests functional redundancy by related growth factors. During adult stages, on the other hand, midkine knockout mice develop striking deficits in neuroprotection and regeneration after drug‐induced neurotoxicity and injury. The detailed mechanisms by which midkine controls neuron formation, differentiation and maintenance remain unclear. Recent studies in zebrafish and chick have provided important insight into the role of midkine and its putative receptor, anaplastic lymphoma kinase, in cell cycle control in the central and peripheral nervous systems. A recent structural analysis of zebrafish midkine furthermore revealed essential protein domains required for biological activity that serve as promising novel targets for future drug designs. This review will summarize latest findings in the field that help to better understand the diverse roles of midkine in nervous system formation and maintenance.

Abstract
We have been carrying out a dense monitoring of the blazar OJ 287 with Swift since late 2015 as part of our project MOMO (Multiwavelength Observations and Modeling of OJ 287). This is the ...densest existing monitoring of OJ 287 involving X-ray/UV data. In this latest publication of a sequence, we characterize the multiwavelength variability of OJ 287 based on >4000 Swift single-wave-band data sets including archival data since 2005. A structure function analysis reveals a characteristic timescale of ∼5 days in the optical–UV at epochs of low-level activity and larger during outbursts. The discrete correlation function shows zero lag between optical and UV, with
τ
= 0 ± 1 day at the epoch of densest cadence. During outbursts (in 2016/17 and 2020) the X-rays follow the UV with near-zero lags. However, during quiescence, the delay is 7–18 days with X-rays leading or lagging, interpreted as due to a different X-ray component dominated by inverse Compton emission. Scaling relations are used to derive the characteristic length scales of the broad-line region and torus in OJ 287. A remarkable, symmetric UV–optical deep fade is identified in late 2017, lasting 2 months. We rule out occultation from the passage of a dusty cloud and a model where the secondary black hole deflects the jet between the primary and observer. We speculate about a temporary dispersion or jet swing event in the core or in a bright quasi-stationary jet feature. The deep fade reveals an additional, spatially distinct X-ray component. The epoch 2020.9–2021.1 was searched for precursor flare activity predicted by the binary black hole model of OJ 287.
