The electronic and adsorption properties of graphene can be changed significantly through substitutional doping with nitrogen and nitrogen decoration of vacancies. Here ab initio density functional ...theory with a dispersion correction was used to investigate the stability, magnetic and adsorption properties of nine defects in graphene, including both nitrogen substitutional doping and nitrogen decoration of vacancies. The results indicate that only pyridinic N2V2 defect in graphene shows a ferromagnetic spin structure with high magnetic moment and magnetic stabilization energy. Not all nitrogen-doped defects can improve the capacity of the lithium-ion batteries. The adsorption energies of a lithium atom on nitrogen-substituted graphenes are more positive, indicating that they are meta-stable and no better than the pristine graphene as anode materials of lithium-ion batteries. Nitrogen-decorated single and double vacancy defects, especially for the pyridinic N2V2 defect in graphene, can greatly improve the reversible capacity of the battery in comparison with the pristine graphene. The theoretical prediction of the reversible capacity of the battery is 1039 mA h g(-1) for the nitrogen-doped graphene material synthesized by Wu et al., which is in good agreement with the experimental data (1043 mA h g(-1)). The theoretical computations suggest that nitrogen-decorated single and double vacancy defects in graphene are the promising candidate for anode materials of lithium-ion batteries. Each nitrogen atom in the decoration can improve the reversible capacity of the battery by 63.3-124.5 mA h g(-1) in a 4 × 4 supercell of graphene. The present work provides crucial information for the development of N-doped graphene-based anode materials of lithium-ion batteries.
Background and purpose
Recent genetic progress has shown many causative/risk genes linked to Parkinson's disease (PD), mainly in patients of European ancestry. The study aimed to investigate the ...PD‐related genes and determine the mutational spectrum of early‐onset PD in ethnic Chinese.
Methods
In this study, whole‐exome sequencing and/or gene dosage analysis were performed in 704 early‐onset PD (EOPD) patients (onset age ≤45 years) and 1866 controls. Twenty‐six PD‐related genes and 20 other genes linked to neurodegenerative and lysosome diseases were analysed.
Results
Eighty‐two (11.6%, 82/704) EOPD patients carrying rare pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants in PD‐related genes were identified. The mutation frequency in autosomal recessive inheritance EOPD (42.9%, 27/63) was much higher than that in autosomal dominant inheritance EOPD (0.9%, 12/110) or sporadic EOPD (8.1%, 43/531). Bi‐allelic mutations in PRKN were the most frequent, accounting for 5.1% of EOPD cases. Three common pathogenic variants, p.A53V in SNCA, p.G284R in PRKN and p.P53Afs*38 in CHCHD2, occur exclusively in Asians. The putative damaging variants from GBA, PRKN, DJ1, PLA2G6 and GCH1 contributed to the collective risk for EOPD. Notably, the protein‐truncating variants in CHCHD2 were enriched in EOPD, especially for p.P53Afs*38, which was also found in three patients from an independent cohort of patients with late‐onset PD (n = 1300). Functional experiments confirmed that truncated CHCHD2 variants cause loss of function and are linked to mitochondrial dysfunction.
Conclusions
Our study reveals that the genetic spectrum of EOPD in Chinese, which may help develop genetic scanning strategies, provided more evidence supporting CHCHD2 in PD.

and was relatively stable over 2 months. Most bursts have nearly 100% linear polarization. About 45% of the bursts have circular polarization with Signal-to-Noise ratio > 3, and the highest circular polarization degree can reach 70%. Our observations suggest that FRB 20220912A is located in a relatively clean local environment with complex circular polarization characteristics. These various behaviors imply that the mechanism of circular polarization of FRBs likely originates from an intrinsic radiation mechanism, such as coherent curvature radiation or inverse Compton scattering inside the magnetosphere of the FRB engine source (e.g., a magnetar).
Adding three cycles of induction chemotherapy with gemcitabine and cisplatin to concurrent chemoradiotherapy improved 3-year recurrence-free survival (85.3%, vs. 76.5% with concurrent ...chemoradiotherapy alone) and overall survival (94.6% vs. 90.3%). The pilot cohort contains rich range of information regarding of demographics and anthropometric measurements, lifestyle and sleep patterns, clinical and health outcomes. The mean height and weight were 172.9 cm and 65.81 kg for males, and 160.1 cm and 52.85 kg for females. Results indicated that the prevalence of underweight in female was much higher than male, but the prevalence of overweight and obesity in female was lower than male. The mean serum 25(OH)D level in the 14 726 young participants was 22.4±5.3 ng/mL, and male had a higher level of serum 25(OH)D than female, overall, 33.5% of the participants had vitamin D deficiency and even more participants suffered from vitamin D insufficiency (58.2%). The proportion of deficiency in females was much higher than that in males (41.8 vs 16.4%). The issue of underweight and vitamin D deficiency in young people should be paid attention, especially in females. These results reflected the fact that thinness and paler skin are preferred in modern aesthetics of Chinese culture.Future plansWBBC pilot is designed as a prospective cohort study and provides a unique and rich data set analysing health trajectories from adolescents to young adults. WBBC will continue to collect samples with old age.
Background and Aim
A pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is an infectious disease with high in‐hospital mortality. It has no specific symptoms and is difficult to be diagnosed early in the emergency ...department. Ultrasound is commonly used to detect PLA lesions of PLA, but its sensitivity can be affected by lesion size, location, and clinician experience. Therefore, early diagnosis and prompt treatment (especially abscess drainage) are crucial for better patient outcomes and should be prioritized by clinical physicians.
Methods
We conducted a retrospective study to compare the effect of early and late (i.e., receiving CT scanning within 48 h and >48 h after admission) adoption of nonenhanced computed tomography (CT) scanning regarding the hospitalization days and interval between admission and drainage of patients with PLA.
Results
This study included 76 hospitalized patients with PLA in the Department of Digestive Disease of Xiamen Chang Gung Hospital in China who underwent CT examinations from 2014 to 2021. We conducted CT scans on 56 patients within 48 h of admission and on 20 patients more than 48 h after admission. The early CT group had a significantly shorter hospitalization length compared with the late CT group (15.0 days vs. 20.5 days; P = 0.035). Besides, the median time to initiate drainage after admission was also significantly shorter in the early CT group than in the late CT group (1.0 days vs. 4.5 days; P < 0.001).
Conclusion
Early CT scanning within 48 h of admission may aid in early PLA diagnosis and benefit disease recovery, as revealed by our findings.
Nonenhancement of early CT could be a clue to make prompt diagnosis for liver abscess, especially for nongastroenterologists.

Diaryl ether (DE) is a functional scaffold existing widely both in natural products (NPs) and synthetic organic compounds. Statistically, DE is the second most popular and enduring scaffold within ...the numerous medicinal chemistry and agrochemical reports. Given its unique physicochemical properties and potential biological activities, DE nucleus is recognized as a fundamental element of medicinal and agrochemical agents aimed at different biological targets. Its drug-like derivatives have been extensively synthesized with interesting biological features including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antimalarial, herbicidal, fungicidal, insecticidal, and so on. In this review, we highlight the medicinal and agrochemical versatility of the DE motif according to the published information in the past decade and comprehensively give a summary of the target recognition, structure–activity relationship (SAR), and mechanism of action of its analogues. It is expected that this profile may provide valuable guidance for the discovery of new active ingredients both in drug and pesticide research.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have received special attention from scientists owing to their excellent adsorption performance. However, the difficulty in separating MOFs from adsorbed metals ...following use has limited their application. A zeolitic imidazole-based MOF with broad applicability for sorption of Pb(II) is examined. In this work, a novel adsorbent employing ZIF-8/calcium alginate microparticles was prepared using sodium alginate and ZIF-8. This adsorbent was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The performance of the ZIF-8@CA microparticles in adsorbing Pb(II) from a Pb(II) solution was investigated, and the impacts of the initial Pb(II) concentration, reaction time, pH, and reaction temperature on the reaction process were investigated. The results showed that ZIF-8@CA microparticles exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 1321.21 mg/g at pH 5 after 120 min, and the adsorption process was found to fit the Langmuir isotherm model (R 2 = 0.9856) and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R 2 = 0.9999). These results showed that the adsorption of Pb(II) was an endothermic process. The regeneration experiment with ZIF-8@CA revealed that the removal efficiency of Pb(II) was greater than 80% even after five cycles.

It has been widely reported that ketamine rescues chronic stress-induced depression-like behavior, but the underlying cellular mechanisms of the rapid antidepressant actions of ketamine remain ...largely unclear. Both male and female Sprague-Dawley rats were used and received modified learned helplessness paradigm to induce depression-like behavior. Depression-like behavior was assayed and manipulated using forced swim tests, sucrose preference tests and pharmacological microinjection. We conducted whole-cell patch-clamp electrophysiological recordings in the midbrain ventrolateral periaqueductal gray (vlPAG) neurons. Surface and cytosolic glutamate receptor 1 (GluR1) α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor expression were analyzed using Western blotting. Phosphorylated GluR1 expression was quantified using Western blotting analysis. The results showed that a single systemic administration of a ketamine metabolite (2R,6R)-hydroxynorketamine (2R,6R-HNK) rapidly rescued chronic stress-induced depression-like behavior and persisted for up to 21 days. Consistently, the chronic stress-induced diminished glutamatergic transmission and surface GluR1 expression in the vlPAG were also reversed by a single systemic injection of (2R,6R)-HNK. Furthermore, bath application of (2R,6R)-HNK increased the frequency and amplitude of miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents (mEPSCs) in the vlPAG. Further evidence for the antidepressant action of (2R,6R)-HNK is provided by the finding that microinjection of (2R,6R)-HNK into the vlPAG exhibited a rapid-acting and long-lasting antidepressant effect. This antidepressant effect of (2R,6R)-HNK was prevented by the intra-vlPAG microinjection of AMPA receptor antagonist CNQX. Together, the current results provide evidence that (2R,6R)-HNK rescues chronic stress-induced depression-like behavior with rapid-acting and long-lasting antidepressant effects through enhancement of AMPA receptor-mediated transmission in the vlPAG.
