Aims/hypothesis
The aim of this study was to use Mendelian randomisation (MR) to identify the causal risk factors for type 2 diabetes.
Methods
We first conducted a review of meta-analyses and review ...articles to pinpoint possible risk factors for type 2 diabetes. Around 170 possible risk factors were identified of which 97 risk factors with available genetic instrumental variables were included in MR analyses. To reveal more risk factors that were not included in our MR analyses, we conducted a review of published MR studies of type 2 diabetes. For our MR analyses, we used summary-level data from the DIAbetes Genetics Replication And Meta-analysis consortium (74,124 type 2 diabetes cases and 824,006 controls of European ancestry). Potential causal associations were replicated using the FinnGen consortium (11,006 type 2 diabetes cases and 82,655 controls of European ancestry). The inverse-variance weighted method was used as the main analysis. Multivariable MR analysis was used to assess whether the observed associations with type 2 diabetes were mediated by BMI. We used the Benjamini–Hochberg method that controls false discovery rate for multiple testing.
Results
We found evidence of causal associations between 34 exposures (19 risk factors and 15 protective factors) and type 2 diabetes. Insomnia was identified as a novel risk factor (OR 1.17 95% CI 1.11, 1.23). The other 18 risk factors were depression, systolic BP, smoking initiation, lifetime smoking, coffee (caffeine) consumption, plasma isoleucine, valine and leucine, liver alanine aminotransferase, childhood and adulthood BMI, body fat percentage, visceral fat mass, resting heart rate, and four plasma fatty acids. The 15 exposures associated with a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes were plasma alanine, HDL- and total cholesterol, age at menarche, testosterone levels, sex hormone binding globulin levels (adjusted for BMI), birthweight, adulthood height, lean body mass (for women), four plasma fatty acids, circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D and education years. < 0.05), such as alcohol consumption, breakfast skipping, daytime napping, short sleep, urinary sodium, and certain amino acids and inflammatory factors.
Conclusions/interpretation
The present study verified several previously reported risk factors and identified novel potential risk factors for type 2 diabetes. Prevention strategies for type 2 diabetes should be considered from multiple perspectives on obesity, mental health, sleep quality, education level, birthweight and smoking.

This technical note establishes a novel result for adaptive asymptotic tracking control of uncertain switched linear systems. The result exploits a recently proposed stability condition for switched ...systems. In particular, a time-varying positive definite Lyapunov function is used to develop a novel piecewise continuous model-reference adaptive law and a dwell-time switching law. In contrast with previous research, where asymptotic tracking was possible only in the presence of a common Lyapunov function for the reference models, in this work asymptotic tracking is shown in a more general setting. Additionally, in the presence of persistence of excitation, the controller parameter estimation errors will converge to zero asymptotically. The main contribution of this work consists in establishing a symmetry between adaptive control of classical non-switched linear systems and adaptive control of switched linear systems. A practical example with an electro-hydraulic system is adopted to illustrate the results.

. It showed a better bactericidal effect on Gram-positive bacteria than Gram-negative. Mechanisms of the antibacterial action were investigated by observing changes of bacteria morphology according to scanning electron microscopy, time-kill analysis, and permeability of cell and membrane integrity. Morphology of tested bacteria was changed and damaged more seriously with increased concentration and exposure time of FCEO. FCEO showed a significant reduction effect on the growth rate of surviving bacteria and lead to lysis of the cell wall, intracellular ingredient leakage, and consequently, cell death.

Environmental challenges especially air pollution (particulate matter (PM) and toxic gases) pose serious threats to public health globally. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline materials ...with high porosity, tunable pore size, and rich functionalities, holding the promise for poisonous pollutants capture. Here, nanocrystals of four unique MOF structures are processed into nanofibrous filters (noted as MOFilter) with high MOF loadings (up to 60 wt %). The MOFilters show high PM removal efficiencies up to 88.33 ± 1.52% and 89.67 ± 1.33% for PM2.5 and PM10, respectively, in the hazy environment, and the performance remains largely unchanged over 48 h of continuous filtration. For the first time, the interactions between such porous crystalline material and particulate pollutants were explored. These thin MOFilters can further selectively capture and retain SO2 when exposed to a stream of SO2/N2 mixture, and their hierarchical nanostructures can easily permeate fresh air at high gas flow rate with the pressure drop <20 Pa.

The pursuit of high energy density has promoted the development of high-performance lithium metal batteries. However, it faces a serious security problem. Ionic liquids have attracted great attention due to their high ionic conductivity, non-flammability, and the properties of promoting the formation of stable SEI films. Deeply understanding the problems existing in lithium metal batteries and the role of ionic liquids in them is of great significance for improving the performance of lithium metal batteries. This article reviews the effects of the molecular structure of ionic liquids on ionic conductivity, Li+ ion transference number, electrochemical stability window, and lithium metal anode/electrolyte interface, as well as the application of ionic liquids in Li-high voltage cathode batteries, Li-O2 batteries and Li-S batteries. The molecular design, composition and polymerization will be the main strategies for the future development of ionic liquid-based electrolytes for high performance lithium metal battery.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a category of porous materials that offer unparalleled control over their surface areas (demonstrated as higher than for any other material), pore characteristics, ...and functionalization. This allows them to be customized for exceptional performance in a wide variety of applications, most commonly including gas storage and separation, drug delivery, luminescence, or heterogeneous catalysis. In order to optimize biomimicry, controlled separations and storage of small molecules, and detailed testing of structure–property relationships, one major goal of MOF research is “rational design” or “pore engineering”, or precise control of the placement of multiple functional groups in pores of chosen sizes and shapes. MOF crystal growth can be controlled through judicious design of stepwise synthetic routes, which can also allow functionalization of MOFs in ways that were previously synthetically inaccessible. Organic chemists have developed a library of powerful techniques over the last century, allowing the total synthesis and detailed customization of complex molecules. Our hypothesis is that total synthesis is also possible for customized porous materials, through the development of similar multistep techniques. This will enable the rational design of MOFs, which is a major goal of many researchers in the field. We have begun developing a library of stepwise synthetic techniques for MOFs, allowing the synthesis of ultrastable MOFs with multiple crystallographically ordered and customizable functional groups at controlled locations within the pores. In order to design MOFs with precise control over pore size and shape, stability, and the placement of multiple different functional groups within the pores at tunable distances from one another, we have concentrated on methods which allow us to circumvent the lack of control inherent to one-pot MOF crystallization. Kinetically tuned dimensional augmentation (KTDA) is an approach using preformed metal clusters as starting materials and monotopic carboxylates as equilibrium shifting agents to make single crystals of ultrastable MOFs. Postsynthetic metathesis and oxidation (PSMO) takes advantage of the fast ligand exchange rate of a metal ion at the low oxidation state as well as the kinetic inertness of the same metal at high oxidation state to make ultrastable and highly crystalline MOFs. Multiple similar strategies have been successful for the metathesis of Fe-based MOFs to Cr3+. Several highly crystalline Ti-MOFs have also been prepared. Kinetically controlled linker installation and cluster metalation methods utilize a stable MOF with inherent coordinatively unsaturated sites as matrix and postsynthetically install linkers or grow clusters on the matrix, so that a robust MOF with precisely placed functionalities is realized. This method has diverse applications especially when specific functional groups or metals having synergistic effects are desired in the proper proximity. Exceptional porosity and stability are required for many potential applications. We have demonstrated several of these, including entrapment of nanoscaled functional moieties such as enzymes. We have developed a series of metal–organic frameworks (PCN-333) with rationally designed ultralarge mesoporous cages as single-molecule traps for enzyme encapsulation. We successfully incorporated metalloporphyrins, well-known biofunctional moieties, into robust MOFs for biomimetic catalytic applications. By rationally tuning the synthetic conditions, we obtained several different porphyrinic Zr-, Fe-, and Ti-MOFs with distinct pore size and concentrated acid or base stability, which offer eligible candidates for different applications. These and other stepwise kinetic tuning and catalyst incorporation methods are small steps toward achieving the grand challenge of detailed control of the placement of matter on an atomic and molecular level.

The fruit ripening process involves physiological and biochemical changes such as pigment accumulation, softening, aroma and flavor formation. There is a great difference in the ripening process between climacteric fruits and non-climacteric fruits. The ripening of these two types of fruits is affected by endogenous signals and exogenous environments. Endogenous signaling plant hormones play an important regulatory role in fruit ripening. This paper systematically reviews recent progress in the regulation of plant hormones in fruit ripening, including ethylene, abscisic acid, auxin, jasmonic acid (JA), gibberellin, brassinosteroid (BR), salicylic acid (SA) and melatonin. The role of plant hormones in both climacteric and non-climacteric fruits is discussed, with emphasis on the interaction between ethylene and other adjustment factors. Specifically, the research progress and future research directions of JA, SA and BR in fruit ripening are discussed, and the regulatory network between JA and other signaling molecules remains to be further revealed. This study is meant to expand the understanding of the importance of plant hormones, clarify the hormonal regulation network and provide a basis for targeted manipulation of fruit ripening.

Adsorptive separation of acetylene (C2H2) from carbon dioxide (CO2) promises a practical way to produce high-purity C2H2 required for industrial applications. However, challenges exist in the pore ...environment engineering of porous materials to recognize two molecules due to their similar molecular sizes and physical properties. Herein, we report a strategy to optimize pore environments of multivariate metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for efficient C2H2/CO2 separation by tuning metal components, functionalized linkers, and terminal ligands. The optimized material UPC-200(Al)-F-BIM, constructed from Al3+ clusters, fluorine-functionalized organic linkers, and benzimidazole terminal ligands, demonstrated the highest separation efficiency (C2H2/CO2 uptake ratio of 2.6) and highest C2H2 productivity among UPC-200 systems. Experimental and computational studies revealed the contribution of small pore size and polar functional groups on the C2H2/CO2 selectivity and indicated the practical C2H2/CO2 separation of UPC-200(Al)-F-BIM.

The controlled generation of singlet oxygen is of great interest owing to its potential applications including industrial wastewater treatment, photochemistry, and photodynamic therapy. Two ...photochromic metal–organic frameworks, PC‐PCN and SO‐PCN, have been developed. A photochromic reaction has been successfully realized in PC‐PCN while maintaining its single crystallinity. In particular, as a solid‐state material which inherently integrates the photochromic switch and photosensitizer, SO‐PCN has demonstrated reversible control of 1O2 generation. Additionally, SO‐PCN shows catalytic activity towards photooxidation of 1,5‐dihydroxynaphthalene.
Back and forth: Through a classical pillar‐layer structure constructed with mixed linkers, two photochromic metal–organic frameworks, PC‐PCN and SO‐PCN, have been developed. SO‐PCN integrates a photochromic switch and photosensitizer, and has demonstrated reversible control of 1O2 generation (see figure).
