Experimental studies have demonstrated that disinfection byproducts (DBPs) can cause ovarian toxicity including inhibition of antral follicle growth and disruption of steroidogenesis, but there is a ...paucity of human evidence. We aimed to investigate whether urinary biomarkers of exposure to drinking water DBPs were associated with ovarian reserve. The present study included 956 women attending an infertility clinic in Wuhan, China from December 2018 to January 2020. Antral follicle count (AFC), ovarian volume (OV), anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) were measured as indicators of ovarian reserve. Urinary dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) were assessed as potential biomarkers of drinking water DBP exposures. Multivariate linear and Poisson regression models were applied to estimate the associations of urinary DCAA and TCAA concentrations with indicators of ovarian reserve. Elevated urinary DCAA and TCAA levels were monotonically associated with reduced total AFC (− 5.98%; 95% CI: − 10.30%, − 1.44% in DCAA and − 12.98%; 95% CI: − 17.00%, − 8.76% in TCAA comparing the extreme tertiles; both P for trends ≤ 0.01), and the former was only observed in right AFC but not in left AFC, whereas the latter was estimated for both right and left AFC. Moreover, elevated urinary TCAA levels were monotonically associated with decreased AMH (− 14.09%; 95% CI: − 24.79%, − 1.86% comparing the extreme tertiles; P for trend = 0.03). These negative associations were still observed for the exposure biomarkers modeled as continuous variables. Our findings suggest that exposure to drinking water DBPs may be associated with decreased ovarian reserve.

The ascomycete fungus Fusarium graminearum causes stalk rot in maize. We tracked this pathogen's growth in wound-inoculated maize stalks using a fluorescence-labeled fungal isolate and observed that ...invasive hyphae grew intercellularly up to 24 h post inoculation, grew intra- and inter-cellularly between 36-48 h, and fully occupied invaded cells after 72 h. Using laser microdissection and microarray analysis, we profiled changes in global gene expression during pathogen growth inside pith tissues of maize stalk from 12 h to six days after inoculation and documented transcriptomic patterns that provide further insights into the infection process. Expression changes in transcripts encoding various plant cell wall degrading enzymes appeared to correlate with inter- and intracellular hyphal growth. Genes associated with 36 secondary metabolite biosynthesis clusters were expressed. Expression of several F. graminearum genes potentially involved in mobilization of the storage lipid triacylglycerol and phosphorus-free lipid biosynthesis were induced during early infection time points, and deletion of these genes caused reduction of virulence in maize stalk. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the F. graminearum betaine lipid synthase 1 (BTA1) gene was necessary and sufficient for production of phosphorus-free membrane lipids, and that deletion of BTA1 interfered with F. graminearum's ability to advance intercellularly. We conclude that F. graminearum produces phosphorus-free membrane lipids to adapt to a phosphate-limited extracellular microenvironment during early stages of its invasion of maize stalk.

Near-infrared (NIR)-light-modulated photothermal thrombolysis has been investigated to overcome the hemorrhage danger posed by clinical clot-busting substances. A long-standing issue in thrombosis ...fibrinolytics is the lack of lesion-specific therapy, which should not be ignored. Herein, a novel thrombolysis therapy using photothermal disintegration of a fibrin clot was explored through dual-targeting glycol chitosan/heparin-decorated polypyrrole nanoparticles (GCS-PPY-H NPs) to enhance thrombus delivery and thrombolytic therapeutic efficacy. GCS-PPY-H NPs can target acidic/P-selectin high-expression inflammatory endothelial cells/thrombus sites for initiating lesion-site-specific thrombolysis by hyperthermia using NIR irradiation. A significant fibrin clot-clearance rate was achieved with thrombolysis using dual-targeting/modality photothermal clot disintegration in vivo. The molecular level mechanisms of the developed nanoformulations and interface properties were determined using multiple surface specific analytical techniques, such as particle size distribution, zeta potential, electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), wavelength absorbance, photothermal, immunofluorescence, and histology. Owing to the augmented thrombus delivery of GCS-PPY-H NPs and swift treatment time, dual-targeting photothermal clot disintegration as a systematic treatment using GCS-PPY-H NPs can be effectively applied in thrombolysis. This novel approach possesses a promising future for thrombolytic treatment.

There is large voltage deviation on the dc bus of the three-stage solid-state transformer (SST) when the load suddenly changes. The feed-forward control can effectively reduce the voltage deviation ...and transition time. However, conventional power feed-forward scheme of SST cannot develop the feed-forward control to the full without extra current sensor. In this letter, an energy feed-forward scheme, which takes the energy changes of inductors into consideration, is proposed for the dual active bridge (DAB) controller. A direct feed-forward scheme, which directly passes the power of DAB converter to the rectifier stage, is proposed for the rectifier controller. They can further improve the dynamic performances of the two dc bus voltages, respectively. The experimental results in a 2-kW SST prototype are provided to verify the proposed feed-forward schemes and show the superior performances.
Background
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), an Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) associated cancer, exhibits an extremely high incidence in southern Chinese. Given that human leukocyte antigen (HLA) plays ...critical roles in antigen presentation and relates to NPC susceptibility, it is speculated that certain HLA variants may affect EBV reactivation, which is a key pathogenic factor of NPC. Therefore, we attempted to identify HLA alleles associated with the indicator of EBV reactivation, Zta‐IgA, in healthy males from NPC endemic area.
Methods
HLA alleles of 1078 healthy males in southern China from the 21‐RCCP study were imputed using genome‐wide single nucleotide polymorphism data. EBV Zta‐IgA in blood samples were measured using an enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the effect of HLA allele on Zta‐IgA serological status and its potential joint association with smoking. The binding affinity for Zta‐peptide was predicted using NetMHCIIpan 4.0.
Results
HLA‐DRB1*09:01 was found to be associated with a higher risk of Zta‐IgA seropositivity (odds ratio = 1.80, 95% confidence interval = 1.32–2.45; p = 1.82 × 10−4). Compared with non‐smokers without HLA‐DRB1*09:01, the effect size increased to 2.19‐ and 3.70‐fold for the light and heavy smokers carrying HLA‐DRB1*09:01, respectively. Furthermore, HLA‐DRB1*09:01 showed a stronger binding affinity to Zta peptide than other HLA‐DRB1 alleles.
Conclusions
Our study highlighted the pivotal role of genetic HLA variants in EBV reactivation and the etiology of NPC. Smokers with HLA‐DRB1*09:01 have a significantly higher risk of being Zta‐IgA seropositive, which indicates the necessity of smoking cessation in certain high‐risk populations and also provide clues for further research on the etiology of NPC.
We conducted an association study for human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles and Epstein–Barr virus Zta‐IgA serological status in healthy males from a nasopharyngeal carcinoma endemic area. We found that HLA‐DRB1*09:01 was associated with a high risk of Zta‐IgA seropositivity and the effect increased when combined with smoking. In silico prediction indicated that HLA‐DRB1*09:01 had a distinctive binding motif pattern and a stronger binding affinity to Zta peptide in comparison with other HLA‐DRB1 alleles.

Objectives. The incidence of hyperuricemia (HUA) is increasing year by year, and there are no ideal drugs for the treatment; the existing ones can cause serious liver and kidney damage. We have ...confirmed that the water extract of Dendrobium candidum leaves could reduce the level of uric acid in rats, but the active ingredients remain unknown, and the mechanism is not well understood. This research investigated the therapeutic effect of the macroporous resin extract of the Dendrobium candidum leaf (DLE) on hyperuricemia. In this study, hyperuricemia was induced in rats by a 5-week high-purine diet. After that, DLE was administered continuously for 9 weeks. The result showed that biochemical parameters of liver and kidney function, especially serum uric acid (UA) levels, were significantly improved with DLE, which may relate to the reduction of xanthine oxidase (XOD) and adenosine deaminase (ADA) in the liver. Moreover, DLE could significantly prevent kidney and liver from damage, and intestinal injury and reduce inflammation in hyperuricemic rats by inhibiting the expression of both NF-κB and TLR4 proteins. These results showed that the macroporous resin extract of the Dendrobium candidum leaves may be effective for the treatment of hyperuricemia in rats by inhibiting uric acid production and decreasing inflammation.

This study aimed to investigate the long-term effects of early stress by Tangshan earthquake on symptoms of depression in adulthood.
A total of 1534 volunteers born and raised in Tangshan were ...investigated; finally, 1328 subjects were enrolled in the study. They were divided into three groups according to their birth dates: infant exposure, prenatal exposure, and non-exposure. The questionnaires and psychological evaluation of all subjects were completed using a one-on-one psychological test.
The rate of depressive symptoms in the prenatal exposure group was the highest, and the lowest in the non-exposure group, with statistical differences among the three groups (P = 0.002). Moreover, the incidences of depressed mood, suicide ideation and work and loss of interest in the prenatal exposure group were significantly higher than those in the infant exposure group and the non-exposure group (P = 0.008, P = 0.001, P = 0.038, respectively). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that male could be a protective factor for symptoms of depression in adulthood, and earthquake exposure was an important predictor of the incidence of depression symptoms.
Fetal or infancy exposure to earthquake might correlate to depression symptoms in adulthood.

The modulation of two-dimensional metal-organic framework (2-D MOF) nanosheet stacking is an effective means to improve the properties and promote the application of nanosheets in various fields. ...Here, we employed a series of alcohol guest molecules (MeOH, EtOH and PrOH) to modulate Zr-BTB (BTB = benzene-1,3,5-tribenzoate) nanosheets and to generate untwisted stacking. The distribution of stacking angles was statistically analyzed from high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) and fast Fourier transform (FFT) images. The ratios of untwisted stacking were calculated, such as 77.01% untwisted stacking for MeOH, 83.45% for EtOH, and 85.61% for PrOH. The obtained untwisted Zr-BTB showed good separation abilities for different substituted benzene isomers, superior

selectivity and excellent column stability and reusability. Control experiments of 2-D Zr-TCA (TCA = 4,4′,4′′-tricarboxytriphenylamine) and Zr-TATB (TATB = 4,4′,4′′-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tribenzoic acid) nanosheets with similar pore sizes and stronger polarity regulated by the alcohol guests exhibited moderate separation performance. The electron microscopy images revealed that polar alcohol regulation dominantly generated the twisted stacking of Zr-TCA and Zr-TATB with various Moiré patterns. Polar guest molecules, such as alcohols, provide strong host-guest interactions during the regulation of MOF nanosheet stacking, providing an opportunity to design new porous Moiré materials with application prospects.

Impaired osteo-/angiogenesis, excessive inflammation, and imbalance of the osteoimmune homeostasis are involved in the pathogenesis of the alveolar bone defect caused by periodontitis. Unfortunately, ...there is still a lack of ideal therapeutic strategies for periodontitis that can regenerate the alveolar bone while remodeling the osteoimmune microenvironment. Quercetin, as a monomeric flavonoid, has multiple pharmacological activities, such as pro-regenerative, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects. Despite its vast spectrum of pharmacological activities, quercetin's clinical application is limited due to its poor water solubility and low bioavailability.
In this study, we fabricated a quercetin-loaded mesoporous bioactive glass (Quercetin/MBG) nano-delivery system with the function of continuously releasing quercetin, which could better promote the bone regeneration and regulate the immune microenvironment in the alveolar bone defect with periodontitis compared to pure MBG treatment. In particular, this nano-delivery system effectively decreased injection frequency of quercetin while yielding favorable therapeutic results. In view of the above excellent therapeutic effects achieved by the sustained release of quercetin, we further investigated its therapeutic mechanisms. Our findings indicated that under the periodontitis microenvironment, the intervention of quercetin could restore the osteo-/angiogenic capacity of periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs), induce immune regulation of macrophages and exert an osteoimmunomodulatory effect. Furthermore, we also found that the above osteoimmunomodulatory effects of quercetin via macrophages could be partially blocked by the overexpression of a key microRNA--miR-21a-5p, which worked through inhibiting the expression of PDCD4 and activating the NF-κB signaling pathway.
In summary, our study shows that quercetin-loaded mesoporous nano-delivery system has the potential to be a therapeutic approach for reconstructing alveolar bone defects in periodontitis. Furthermore, it also offers a new perspective for treating alveolar bone defects in periodontitis by inhibiting the expression of miR-21a-5p in macrophages and thereby creating a favorable osteoimmune microenvironment.
