Neural stem cells (NSCs), capable of ischemia‐homing, regeneration, and differentiation, exert strong therapeutic potentials in treating ischemic stroke, but the curative effect is limited in the ...harsh microenvironment of ischemic regions rich in reactive oxygen species (ROS). Gene transfection to make NSCs overexpress brain‐derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) can enhance their therapeutic efficacy; however, viral vectors must be used because current nonviral vectors are unable to efficiently transfect NSCs. The first polymeric vector, ROS‐responsive charge‐reversal poly(2‐acryloyl)ethyl(p‐boronic acid benzyl)diethylammonium bromide (B‐PDEA), is shown here, that mediates efficient gene transfection of NSCs and greatly enhances their therapeutics in ischemic stroke treatment. The cationic B‐PDEA/DNA polyplexes can effectively transfect NSCs; in the cytosol, the B‐PDEA is oxidized by intracellular ROS into negatively charged polyacrylic acid, quickly releasing the BDNF plasmids for efficient transcription and secreting a high level of BDNF. After i.v. injection in ischemic stroke mice, the transfected NSCs (BDNF‐NSCs) can home to ischemic regions as efficiently as the pristine NSCs but more efficiently produce BDNF, leading to significantly augmented BDNF levels, which in turn enhances the mouse survival rate to 60%, from 0% (nontreated mice) or ≈20% (NSC‐treated mice), and enables more rapid and superior functional reconstruction.
The first nonviral gene carrier, reactive‐oxygen‐species‐responsive charge‐reversal poly(2‐acryloyl)‐ethyl(p‐boronic acid benzyl)diethylammonium bromide (B‐PDEA), is shown to mediate efficient gene transfection to neural stem cells (NSCs). When BDNF gene plasmids are used, the transfected NSCs homing to the ischemic regions increase animal survival and reconstruct functions.

Topological insulators with unique edge states have revolutionized the understanding of solid-state materials. Recently, higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs), which host both gapped edge ...states and in-gap corner/hinge states, protected concurrently by band topology, were predicted and observed in experiments, unveiling a new horizon beyond the conventional bulk-edge correspondence. However, the control and manifestation of band topology in a hierarchy of dimensions, which is at the heart of HOTIs, have not yet been witnessed. Here, we propose theoretically and observe experimentally that tunable two-dimensional sonic crystals can be versatile systems to visualize and harness higher-order topology. In our systems, the two-dimensional acoustic bands mimic the quantum spin Hall effect, while the resultant one-dimensional helical edge states are gapped due to broken space-symmetry and carry quantized Zak phases, which then lead to zero-dimensional topological corner states. We demonstrate that topological transitions in the bulk and edges can be triggered independently by tuning the geometry of the sonic crystals. With complementary experiments and theories, our study reveals rich physics in HOTIs, opening a new route towards tunable topological metamaterials where novel applications, such as the topological transfer of acoustic energy among two-, one- and zero-dimensional modes, can be achieved.By tuning the geometry of a two-dimensional sonic crystal, its one-dimensional helical edge states become gapped and zero-dimensional topological corner states emerge. The band topology is thus manifested in a hierarchy of dimensions.

Beyond the scope of Hermitian physics, non-Hermiticity fundamentally changes the topological band theory, leading to interesting phenomena, e.g., non-Hermitian skin effect, as confirmed in ...one-dimensional systems. However, in higher dimensions, these effects remain elusive. Here, we demonstrate the spin-polarized, higher-order non-Hermitian skin effect in two-dimensional acoustic higher-order topological insulators. We find that non-Hermiticity drives wave localizations toward opposite edges upon different spin polarizations. More interestingly, for finite systems with both edges and corners, the higher-order non-Hermitian skin effect leads to wave localizations toward two opposite corners for all the bulk, edge and corner states in a spin-dependent manner. We further show that such a skin effect enables rich wave manipulation by configuring the non-Hermiticity. Our study reveals the intriguing interplay between higher-order topology and non-Hermiticity, which is further enriched by the pseudospin degree of freedom, unveiling a horizon in the study of non-Hermitian physics.
Microplastics may lose buoyancy and occur in deeper waters and ultimately sink to the sediment and this may threaten plankton inhabiting in various water layers and benthic organisms. Here, we ...conduct the first survey on microplastics in the water column and corresponding sediment in addition to the surface water in the Bohai Sea. A total of 20 stations covering whole Bohai Sea were selected, which included 6 stations specified for water column studying. Seawater was sampled every 5 m, with maximal depth of 30 m in the water column using Niskin bottles coupled with a ship-based conductivity, temperature and depth sensor (CTD) system and surface sediment samples were collected using box corer. The results indicated that higher microplastic levels accumulated at a depth range of 5–15 m in the water column in some stations, suggesting the surface water survey was not sufficient to reflect microplastics loading in a water body. Fibers predominated microplastic types in both seawater and sediment of the Bohai Sea, which accounted for 75%–96.4% of the total microplastics. However the relatively proportion of the fibers in the deeper water layers and sediment was lower than that in the surface water. Microplastic shapes are more diverse in the sediment than in the seawater in general. The microplastic sizes changed with depth in the water column and the proportion of the size-fraction < 300 μm increased with depth, probably as a result of rapid biofouling on the small microplastics due to their higher specific surface area. Such depth distribution also implied that sampling with manta net (>330 μm) that commonly used in the oceanographic survey might underestimate microplastics abundance in the water column. Further studies are recommended to focus on the sinking behavior of microplastics and their effects on marine organisms.

Cognitive decline is one of the complications of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Intermittent fasting (IF) is a promising dietary intervention for alleviating T2D symptoms, but its protective effect on ...diabetes-driven cognitive dysfunction remains elusive. Here, we find that a 28-day IF regimen for diabetic mice improves behavioral impairment via a microbiota-metabolites-brain axis: IF enhances mitochondrial biogenesis and energy metabolism gene expression in hippocampus, re-structures the gut microbiota, and improves microbial metabolites that are related to cognitive function. Moreover, strong connections are observed between IF affected genes, microbiota and metabolites, as assessed by integrative modelling. Removing gut microbiota with antibiotics partly abolishes the neuroprotective effects of IF. Administration of 3-indolepropionic acid, serotonin, short chain fatty acids or tauroursodeoxycholic acid shows a similar effect to IF in terms of improving cognitive function. Together, our study purports the microbiota-metabolites-brain axis as a mechanism that can enable therapeutic strategies against metabolism-implicated cognitive pathophysiologies.
Carbon trading is an important market instrument and policy tool to promote China's practice of low-carbon energy conservation and strive to achieve carbon peaking by 2030 and carbon neutrality by ...2060. To improve market flow and respond to the national strategy to support the development of carbon trading in China, a smart carbon trading process optimization framework based on blockchain technology is developed in this article. First, the paper analyzes the current state of carbon trading in China's power sector and identifies the future development trend and barriers to carbon trading in China. Second, a framework for a smart carbon trading system based on the structure and traits of blockchain technology is created to optimize the carbon trading process. Third, the smart contract for the smart carbon trading system is built (including execution logic, transaction matching, contract fulfillment, and other elements). This mechanism measures the reputation of trading users. Finally, policy suggestions are provided to solve the current issues and challenges. According to the research conducted for this paper on “blockchain + carbon trading in China,” carbon trading supported by blockchain technology can guarantee transaction security and efficiency, accurately preserve transaction records, and offer a high level of automated settlement.

In the fiber communication domain, people are facing the challenges due to the rapidly growing requirement on the capacity from new functions and services. Multi-hump solitons are therefore noticed ...and studied on the feasibility of improving the capacity of the optical fiber communication. In this paper, we study the vector bright solitons and their interaction properties of the coupled Fokas–Lenells system, which models the femtosecond optical pulses in a birefringent optical fiber. We derive the so-called degenerate and nondegenerate vector solitons associated with the one and two eigenvalues, respectively, and the latter admits the symmetric profile. Asymptotically and graphically, interaction patterns of such solitons are classified as follows: Interactions between the degenerate solitons can be elastic or inelastic, reflecting the intensity redistribution between the two components; Interactions between the degenerate and nondegenerate solitons are inelastic, which make the nondegenerate solitons maintaining or losing the profiles in the different situations; Interactions between the nondegenerate solitons do not cause the intensity redistribution, while their shapes change slightly or remain unchanged.

Green technology innovation is a crucial assurance of achieving sustainable economic and environmental development, so improving the capability of green technology innovation is an urgent problem. In ...order to provide a more objective and accurate tool for identifying the most important impact factor of green technology innovation, this study innovatively proposes a new method by combining the bipolar neutrosophic sets with Weighted Influence Nonlinear Gauge System (WINGS) method. Furthermore, this paper intends to provide recommendations in improving green technology innovation capability. We invite five experts to evaluate fifteen factors influencing green technology innovation using the bipolar neutrosophic linguistic variables. Then, the proposed bipolar neutrosophic set WINGS (Bipolar NS-WINGS) method is applied to measure the influence of each impact factor of green technology innovation. Finally, we divide all the factors into cause group and effect group. Moreover, the network relation map is constructed to visualize the interrelationships between all impact factors. The Bipolar NS-WINGS suggests that Science and Technology Innovation Environment (Ω7) is the most important factor of green technology innovation. The result also indicates that R&D Investment (Ω8) is the most influential factor in which it has impacted many other factors. It is obvious that the integrated method not only enriches the research in the field of decision theory, which has not combined the bipolar-NS and WINGS method for analyzing relationships of factors, but also contributes to the improvement of green technology innovation capabilities.
