In this study, the recovery of strain-hardening rate (RSHR) was discovered for the first time in polycrystalline materials (Ni-Si alloys) that have only dislocation activities during tensile test. ...Detailed microstructure characterizations show that the activation of dislocations in the secondary slip systems during tensile deformation is the major reason for this RSHR. By taking into account other metals that also exhibit RSHR during tension, a more general mechanism for the RSHR was proposed, i.e. the occurrence of a sharp decrease of dislocation mean free path (Λ) during plastic deformation, caused by either planar defects or linear defects.

We present improved germanium-based constraints on sub-GeV dark matter via dark matter-electron (χ-e) scattering using the 205.4 kg·day dataset from the CDEX-10 experiment. Using a novel calculation ...technique, we attain predicted χ-e scattering spectra observable in high-purity germanium detectors. In the heavy mediator scenario, our results achieve 3 orders of magnitude of improvement for m_{χ} larger than 80 MeV/c^{2} compared to previous germanium-based χ-e results. We also present the most stringent χ-e cross-section limit to date among experiments using solid-state detectors for m_{χ} larger than 90 MeV/c^{2} with heavy mediators and m_{χ} larger than 100 MeV/c^{2} with electric dipole coupling. The result proves the feasibility and demonstrates the vast potential of a new χ-e detection method with high-purity germanium detectors in ultralow radioactive background.

The measurement of the energy spectrum of cosmic ray helium nuclei from 70 GeV to 80 TeV using 4.5 years of data recorded by the Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is reported in this work. A ...hardening of the spectrum is observed at an energy of about 1.3 TeV, similar to previous observations. In addition, a spectral softening at about 34 TeV is revealed for the first time with large statistics and well controlled systematic uncertainties, with an overall significance of 4.3σ. The DAMPE spectral measurements of both cosmic protons and helium nuclei suggest a particle charge dependent softening energy, although with current uncertainties a dependence on the number of nucleons cannot be ruled out.

The combined effects of crystallographic orientation and stacking fault energy (SFE) on the cracking behaviors of twin boundaries (TB) under low-cycle fatigue (LCF) tests were studied in pure Cu, ...Cu–Al and Cu–Zn alloys. A new approach, called the slipping morphology method, based on the crystallographic characteristics of Σ3 TB in face-centered cubic materials, was developed to determine the grain orientations by studying the twin-slip morphology characteristics on the sample surfaces after LCF tests. Through analyzing the dislocation–TB interaction and the damage this causes to TBs, a new parameter, defined as the difference of Schmid factors (DSF), was proposed to describe the effects of crystallographic orientation on the LCF cracking behaviors of TBs. A semi-quantitative relationship was established among DSF, SFE, dislocation slip mode and the critical conditions of TB cracking by systematically studying more than a hundred post-fatigue surface morphologies of pure Cu, Cu–Al and Cu–Zn alloys. It is interesting to find that the TB cracking relies strongly on the cooperation of both DSF and SFE. Furthermore, taking into account the interactions between slip dislocations and different boundaries, the fatigue cracking possibilities of several typical interfaces were compared and discussed. The results demonstrate that low-angle grain boundaries (GBs) are the strongest in resisting fatigue cracking, high-angle GBs are the weakest, and TBs are in between, which contributes the most to the final fatigue performance of materials. This new finding will help understanding of the interfacial properties under cyclic loading and may be beneficial to the design of high-performance materials with optimal fatigue properties in the future.

We report an efficient inkjet printing of water-based pristine GNPs graphene ink and a facile aqueous halogen doping process that provides significant and thermally stable conductivity enhancement of ...printed patterns. Highly concentrated aqueous graphene ink populated by few-layer pristine graphene flakes is obtained by means of scalable shear exfoliation process with the aid of bromine intercalation. The as-printed GNP films which has been merely treated by drying at 100 °C exhibits DC conductivity (σDC) of ∼1400 S/m likely due to bromine doping effect. This value is significantly increased to ∼3 × 104 S/m when an additional treatment by means of dipping in aqueous iodine solution is applied prior to the drying. As contrast, σDC is increased to ∼2.4 × 104 S/m when a mere annealing at elevated temperature in air is employed. When the aqueous iodine doping process and annealing at elevated temperature is combined, an unprecedented value of σDC ∼105 S/m is achieved. The availability of water-based GNPs inks and low-temperature doping scheme for efficient and reliable conductivity enhancement has offered a pathway for the application of GNPs in different printed electronics devices.

Abstract Objective Multi-mode universal adhesives offer clinicians the choice of using the etch-and-rinse technique, selective enamel etch technique or self-etch technique to bond to tooth ...substrates. The present study examined the short-term in vitro performance of five universal adhesives bonded to human coronal dentine. Methods Two hundred non-carious human third molars were assigned to five groups based on the type of the universal adhesives (Prime&Bond Elect, Scotchbond Universal, All-Bond Universal, Clearfil Universal Bond and Futurabond U). Two bonding modes (etch-and-rinse and self-etch) were employed for each adhesive group. Bonded specimens were stored in deionized water for 24 h or underwent a 10,000-cycle thermocycling ageing process prior to testing ( N = 10). Microtensile bond testing (μTBS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of resin–dentine interfaces in non-thermocycled specimens and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of tracer-infused water-rich zones within hybrid layers of thermocycled specimens were performed. Results Both adhesive type and testing condition (with/without thermocycling) have significant influences on μTBS. The use of each adhesive in either the etch-and-rinse or self-etch application mode did not result in significantly different μTBS to dentine. Hybrid layers created by these adhesives in the etch-and-rinse bonding mode and self-etch bonding mode were ∼5 μm and ≤0.5 μm thick respectively. Tracer-infused regions could be identified within the resin–dentine interface from all the specimens prepared. Conclusion The increase in versatility of universal adhesives is not accompanied by technological advances for overcoming the challenges associated with previous generations of adhesives. Therapeutic adhesives with bio-protective and bio-promoting effects are still lacking in commercialized adhesives. Clinical significance Universal adhesives represent manufacturers’ attempt to introduce versatility in product design via adaptation of a single-bottle self-etch adhesive for other application modes without compromising its bonding effectiveness.

Various modeling studies have examined the climatic effects of either the Central American Seaway or the Indonesian seaway. The co‐existence of these two tropical seaways may have a greater influence ...than the existence of a single seaway. Although the dual seaway situation is closer to that reconstructed during Miocene/Pliocene, relevant studies remain scarce. Here, we investigate the co‐effects of dual tropical seaway changes on the Pacific circulation through a set of sensitivity experiments. Our results show that the combined shallow opening of tropical seaways can generate an active Pacific meridional overturning circulation and maintain strong upwelling conditions along the equatorial Pacific, which may have helped favor a “biogenic bloom” during the late Miocene and early Pliocene. Moreover, the logically successive closure of the tropical seaways can provide patterns of zonal sea surface temperature gradients that are similar to those recorded in the equatorial Pacific from the late Miocene to the Pliocene.
Plain Language Summary
During the late Miocene and the Pliocene, changes in the Central American and the Indonesian seaways geometry are very important for ocean circulation and global climate. Various modelling studies have examined the separate effects of these two tropical seaways, especially their link to the onset of the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets through changes in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation and associated heat and moisture transport. Although the existence of dual tropical seaways is closer to the reality, there are very scarce modelling studies exploring the co‐effects of dual tropical seaway changes, especially on the Pacific ocean circulation. Here we provide the results of modelling study on this issue. Our results show that the combined shallow opening of tropical ways can generate an active Pacific meridional overturning circulation (i.e., absent in modern conditions) by which the meridional and zonal sea surface temperature gradient in the Pacific largely reduce. In contrast, a deeper opening of tropical seaways can not produce these changes in the Pacific ocean circulation. This study provides insights into and a better understanding of the role of tropical seaways in shaping the Pacific climate and highlights the importance of the sill depth of each seaway.
Key Points
The co‐effects of opening of two tropical seaways on the Pacific circulation are investigated with climate model
Shallow opening of tropical seaways can generate an active Pacific meridional overturning circulation, whilst a deeper condition can not
The stepwise closure of the tropical seaways can provide similar‐to‐record patterns of zonal sea surface temperature gradients

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is a major public health concern all over the world. Little is known about the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on mental health in the general population. ...This study aimed to assess the mental health problems and associated factors among a large sample of college students during the COVID-19 outbreak in China.
This cross-sectional and nation-wide survey of college students was conducted in China from 3 to 10 February 2020. A self-administered questionnaire was used to assess psychosocial factors, COVID-19 epidemic related factors and mental health problems. Acute stress, depressive and anxiety symptoms were measured by the Chinese versions of the impact of event scale-6, Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, respectively. Univariate and hierarchical logistic regression analyses were performed to examine factors associated with mental health problems.
Among 821 218 students who participated in the survey, 746 217 (90.9%) were included for the analysis. In total, 414 604 (55.6%) of the students were female. About 45% of the participants had mental health problems. The prevalence rates of probable acute stress, depressive and anxiety symptoms were 34.9%, 21.1% and 11.0%, respectively. COVID-19 epidemic factors that were associated with increased risk of mental health problems were having relatives or friends being infected (adjusted odds ratio = 1.72-2.33). Students with exposure to media coverage of the COVID-19 ≥3 h/day were 2.13 times more likely than students with media exposure <1 h/day to have acute stress symptoms. Individuals with low perceived social support were 4.84-5.98 times more likely than individuals with high perceived social support to have anxiety and depressive symptoms. In addition, senior year and prior mental health problems were also significantly associated with anxiety or/and depressive symptoms.
In this large-scale survey of college students in China, acute stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms are prevalent during the COVID-19 pandemic. Multiple epidemic and psychosocial factors, such as family members being infected, massive media exposure, low social support, senior year and prior mental health problems were associated with increased risk of mental health problems. Psychosocial support and mental health services should be provided to those students at risk.
This Letter reports a measurement of the flux and energy spectrum of electron antineutrinos from six 2.9 GWth nuclear reactors with six detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512 and 561 ...m) and one far (1579 m) underground experimental halls in the Daya Bay experiment. Using 217 days of data, 296 721 and 41 589 inverse β decay (IBD) candidates were detected in the near and far halls, respectively. The measured IBD yield is (1.55±0.04) ×10(-18) cm(2) GW(-1) day(-1) or (5.92±0.14) ×10(-43) cm(2) fission(-1). This flux measurement is consistent with previous short-baseline reactor antineutrino experiments and is 0.946±0.022 (0.991±0.023) relative to the flux predicted with the Huber-Mueller (ILL-Vogel) fissile antineutrino model. The measured IBD positron energy spectrum deviates from both spectral predictions by more than 2σ over the full energy range with a local significance of up to ∼4σ between 4-6 MeV. A reactor antineutrino spectrum of IBD reactions is extracted from the measured positron energy spectrum for model-independent predictions.

Synthetic dimension provides a new platform for realizing topological photonic devices. Here, we propose a method to realize a rainbow concentrator of topological photonic states based on the ...synthetic dimension concept. The synthetic dimension is constructed using a translational degree of freedom of the nanostructures inside the unit cell of a two-dimensional photonic crystal. The translational deformation induces a nontrivial topology in the synthetic dimension, which gives rise to robust interface states at different frequencies. The topological rainbow can trap states with different frequencies, controlled by tuning the spatial modulation of interface state group velocities. The operation frequency as well as the bandwidth of the topological rainbow can be easily tuned by controlling the band gap of the photonic crystal. The topological principle can be applied to photonic crystals of any symmetry and arbitrary material composition, as long as a complete band gap exists. This Letter provides a new and general scheme for the realization of a topological rainbow concentrator and will be useful for the development of topological photonic devices.
