/PVP NRs could form a compatible NIR-absorbing film, which could generate heat to switch LC film from planar texture to focal conic texture. The bistable liquid crystal film could save almost 53% time at thermal elimination compared to LC mixture without NIR absorbent when the content of Cs

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRHa) might play a role in preserving ovarian function in lymphoma patients by inhibiting chemotherapy-induced ovarian follicular damage. However, studies of ...its clinical efficacy have reported conflicting results.
We conducted a meta-analysis to determine the effect of the preservation of ovarian function by administering GnRHa in young patients with lymphoma undergoing chemotherapy. Seven studies were identified that met inclusion criteria and comprised 434 patients assigned to GnRHa combined chemotherapy or chemotherapy alone.
The incidence of women with premature ovarian failure (POF) demonstrated a statistically significant difference in favor of the use of GnRHa (OR=0.32, 95% CI 0.13-0.77). In addition, the final level of FSH in the GnRH group was significantly lower than control group. (MD= -11.73, 95% CI,-22.25- -1.20), and the final level of AMH in the GnRH group was significantly higher than control group (MD=0.80; 95% CI, 0.61-0.98). However, there was no statistically significant difference between treatment and the control groups in the incidence of a spontaneous pregnancy (OR=1.11; 95% CI, 0.55-2.26).
This meta-analysis suggests that GnRHa may be effective in protecting ovarian function during chemotherapy in lymphoma patients. More well-designed prospective studies are needed to carry out for further understanding of this topic.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether white-cell derived biomarkers could serve as potential markers in prediction of postoperative delirium (POD) after lower limb fracture.
Elderly ...patients with surgery for lower limb fracture under non-general anaesthesia were included. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and platelet-to-white cell ratio (PWR), which were most recently measured preceding surgery and measured within 24h after surgery, were calculated. Delirium was measured with Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) once daily from preoperative day 1 to postoperative day 3 or hospital discharge.
The incidence of POD was 32.6% (60/184). Between patients with and those without POD, there were significant differences in preoperative hematological biomarkers (neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, NLR and PWR) and postoperative hematological biomarkers (white cell count, neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, NLR, PLR and PWR). More obvious changes before and after operation for NLR, PLR and C-reactive protein (CRP) were found in patients with POD. Multivariate logistic regression showed that benzodiazepines (OR, 7.912; 95% CI, 1.884-33.230; p = 0.005), change of CRP (OR, 1.017; 95% CI, 1.007-1.027; p = 0.001) and postoperative NLR (OR, 1.358; 95% CI, 1.012-1.823; p = 0.041) were associated with POD. When the changes of NLR, PLR and PWR entered multivariate logistic regression, older age (OR, 1.073; 95% CI, 1.001-1.149; p = 0.046), benzodiazepines (OR, 6.811; 95% CI, 1.652-28.081; p = 0.008), greater change of CRP (OR, 1.015; 95% CI, 1.006-1.023; p = 0.001) and greater change of NLR (OR, 1.266; 95% CI, 1.035-1.549; p = 0.022) were associated with increased risk of POD. Postoperative NLR had high accuracy to predict POD with area under curve (AUC) of 0.790 (95% CI 0.708 to 0.872).
Age, benzodiazepines, postoperative NLR, change of NLR and change of CRP were independent predictable markers for POD in elderly patients undergoing surgery for lower limb fracture under non-general anaesthesia. Early postoperative NLR may help to recognize POD as soon as possible.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small non-coding RNAs (20 to 24 nucleotides) that post-transcriptionally modulate gene expression. A key oncomir in carcinogenesis is miR-21, which is consistently ...up-regulated in a wide range of cancers. However, few functional studies are available for miR-21, and few targets have been identified. In this study, we explored the role of miR-21 in human breast cancer cells and tissues, and searched for miR-21 targets.
We used in vitro and in vivo assays to explore the role of miR-21 in the malignant progression of human breast cancer, using miR-21 knockdown. Using LNA silencing combined to microarray technology and target prediction, we screened for potential targets of miR-21 and validated direct targets by using luciferase reporter assay and Western blot. Two candidate target genes (EIF4A2 and ANKRD46) were selected for analysis of correlation with clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis using immunohistochemistry on cancer tissue microrrays.
Anti-miR-21 inhibited growth and migration of MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells in vitro, and tumor growth in nude mice. Knockdown of miR-21 significantly increased the expression of ANKRD46 at both mRNA and protein levels. Luciferase assays using a reporter carrying a putative target site in the 3' untranslated region of ANKRD46 revealed that miR-21 directly targeted ANKRD46. miR-21 and EIF4A2 protein were inversely expressed in breast cancers (rs = -0.283, P = 0.005, Spearman's correlation analysis).
Knockdown of miR-21 in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells inhibits in vitro and in vivo growth as well as in vitro migration. ANKRD46 is newly identified as a direct target of miR-21 in BC. These results suggest that inhibitory strategies against miR-21 using peptide nucleic acids (PNAs)-antimiR-21 may provide potential therapeutic applications in breast cancer treatment.

•The effect of thermal treatment on the structure of Pd-on-Au catalysts was assessed using TCE HDC as a model reaction.•Based on the Pd and temperature, the NPs went from Au core/Pd ...shell to Au core/PdAu surface alloy or PdAu alloy structures.•Activity correlated with Pd ensemble size, with up to ten times enhanced activity compared to monometallic Pd.•These results show the importance of structure on activity as well as the potential use of the NPs at high temperatures.
Palladium metal supported on gold in the form of surface ensembles have enhanced catalytic properties compared to monometallic Pd, as exemplified by Pd-decorated Au nanoparticles (Pd-on-Au NPs) for various room-temperature reactions. Whereas the catalytic properties and nanostructure of Pd-on-Au NPs are not known at higher temperatures, this work focuses on thermal annealing effects on the Pd-on-Au NP nanostructure, bimetal distribution, and room-temperature water-phase trichloroethene hydrodechlorination (TCE HDC) as the model reaction. Analysis of the average coordination environment of Pd and Au atoms through x-ray absorption spectroscopy showed that as-synthesized Pd-on-Au NPs transitioned from a Au core/Pd shell structure to Au-rich core/PdAu surface alloy or PdAu mixed alloy structures depending on the Pd surface coverage (30–150 sc%) and annealing temperature (100–400 °C). The HDC activity strongly correlated with Pd ensemble size, where the as-formed Pd islands exhibited one order of magnitude enhanced activity compared to monometallic Pd. Higher annealing temperatures led to a surface/mixed alloy structure with smaller Pd ensemble size, resulting in lower activity but still ∼3 times more active than monometallic Pd. These results illustrate the importance of catalyst structure on activity and the usefulness of metal-decorated metal catalysts for higher-temperature reactions.

Hemin-loaded graphene oxide with excellent peroxidase-like activity shows great potential for biosensing applications. However, the detection sensitivity of biosensors based on such catalytic methods ...is limited by the lack of a signal amplification technique. In this work, we developed a simple and rapid signal amplification method based on streamlined click reactions enabling one-step assembly of multilayer graphene oxide nanosheets on magnetic beads to immobilize large amounts of hemin serving as active catalysts, which allowed for the highly sensitive detection of various biological targets, including copper ions, DNA sequences and proteins. With this method, we achieved detection limits down to 13.74 nM, 4.89 pM and 7.77 pg/mL for Cu2+, Ebola virus DNA sequences, and carcinoembryonic antigen, respectively. The designed platform holds great promise in the self-assembly of graphene-based nanozymes and sensitive colorimetric biosensing in a wider range of applications.

Despite
C
hina's rapid growth in the past decade,
C
hinese rural residents suffer from a continuing decline of both calorie and protein intakes. We investigate the dramatic historical changes in ...nutritional intake in the
C
hinese countryside. There are two main explanations for the decline: first, the changing demographic and economic structure contributes to a lower demand for energy compared to traditional rural society; and, second, the rising cost of non‐food essential goods could lead to a squeeze in the food budget. Using both national‐level and provincial‐level data, we find evidence for both factors. We further argue that the current abnormally low level of nutritional intake is mainly due to commodification in the context of diet westernization. Rural residents' nutritional intake declines as they divert their consumption from relatively cheap sources of energy (grain and vegetable) to more expensive alternatives (meat and poultry) under a squeezed budget. The shocking failure of sustaining a healthy rural population is a unique manifestation of the contradiction in the
C
hinese agrarian relations.

Birds play a vital and indispensable role in biodiversity and environmental conservation. Protecting bird diversity is crucial for maintaining the balance of nature, promoting ecosystem health, and ...ensuring sustainable development. The Broad Learning System (BLS) exhibits an excellent ability to extract highly discriminative features from raw inputs and construct complex feature representations by combining feature nodes and enhancement nodes, thereby enabling effective recognition and classification of various birdsongs. However, within the BLS, the selection of feature nodes and enhancement nodes assumes critical significance, yet the model lacks the capability to identify high quality network nodes. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel method that introduces residual blocks and Mutual Similarity Criterion (MSC) layers into BLS to form an improved BLS (RMSC-BLS), which makes it easier for BLS to automatically select optimal features related to output. Experimental results demonstrate the accuracy of the RMSC-BLS model for the three construction features of MFCC, dMFCC, and dsquence is 78.85%, 79.29%, and 92.37%, respectively, which is 4.08%, 4.50%, and 2.38% higher than that of original BLS model. In addition, compared with other models, our RMSC-BLS model shows superior recognition performance, has higher stability and better generalization ability, and provides an effective solution for birdsong recognition.

•Proposed a CNN based in-line inspection of codes on complex backgrounds.•DL was applied to the defect inspection for the container industry first time.•Transfer learning enabled the trained model to inspect different kinds of packages.•Achieved both excellent performance in accuracy and computational complexity.
Machine vision technologies have been widely used for automating the product quality control, but the defect inspection for codes on complex backgrounds is still a challenging task in the plastic container industry. In this work, an efficient and accurate inspection solution based on deep learning was proposed aiming at the detection of codes on complex backgrounds for the plastic container such as beverage packages. Firstly, image processing algorithms such as the region translation method, morphological processing, and image matching technology based on SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) features were implemented to generate synthetic defective samples, which moderated the class-imbalance problem. Data augmentation strategies were used to increase the amount of training data. Secondly, the ShuffleNet V2 framework was adapted to inspect inkjet codes on complex backgrounds. Additionally, the transfer learning was used to transfer the trained model to other inspection tasks for different kinds of packages. Finally, the proposed approach was built onto an in-line code inspection apparatus for the plastic container industry, and an accuracy of 0.9988 was achieved. The in-line testing results of false detection and omission detection rates demonstrated that the proposed solution can fully meet the production requirements. To the best of our knowledge, this report describes the first time that deep learning has been applied to the industrial defect inspection for the plastic container industry.
