Abstract
The capacity of vegetation to mitigate excessive urban heat has been well documented. However, the cooling potential provided by urban vegetation during heatwaves is less known even though ...heatwaves have been projected to be more severe with climate change. Across 24 global metropolises, we combine 30 m resolution satellite observations with a theoretical leaf energy balance model to quantify the change of the leaf-to-air temperature difference and stomatal conductance during heatwaves from 2000 to 2020. We found the responses of urban vegetation to heatwaves differ significantly across cities and they are mediated by climate forcing and human management. During heatwaves, vegetation in Mediterranean and midlatitude-humid cities shows a significant decrease in cooling potential in most cases due to large stomatal closures, while vegetation in arid cities shows a cooling enhancement with an unmodified stomatal opening likely in response to intense irrigation. In comparison, the cooling potential of vegetation in high-latitude humid cities does not show significant changes. These responses have implications for future urban vegetation management strategies and urban planning.
In nature, self-assembly processes based on amphiphilic molecules play an integral part in the design of structures of higher order such as cells. Among them, amphiphilic glycoproteins or glycolipids ...take on a pivotal role due to their bioactivity. Here we show that sugars, in particular, fructose, are capable of directing the self-assembly of highly insoluble curcumin resulting in the formation of well-defined capsules based on non-covalent forces. Simply by mixing an aqueous solution of fructose and curcumin in an open vessel leads to the generation of capsules with sizes ranging between 100 and 150 nm independent of the initial concentrations used. Our results demonstrate that hydrogen bonding displayed by fructose can induce the self-assembly of hydrophobic molecules such as curcumin into well-ordered structures, and serving as a simple and virtually instantaneous way of making nanoparticles from curcumin in water with the potential for template polymerization and nanocarriers.
Since the 21st century, China has experienced rapid development, and the spatial and temporal changes in vegetation cover have become increasingly significant. Southern China is a representative ...region for human activities, climate change, and vegetation change, but the current human understanding of the interactions between vegetation and its influencing factors is still very limited. In our study, we use NDVI as the vegetation greenness data, land cover data, temperature, precipitation, downgradient shortwave radiation, and CO2 data to investigate the interrelationship among vegetation, climate change, and human activities in southern China. The changes and their consistency were studied by trend analysis and Hurst exponent analysis. Then, the contribution of each influencing factor from 2001 to 2020 was quantified by random forest. The results showed that the vegetation in southern China showed an overall rising trend, and areas with a continuous changing trend were concentrated in the Pearl River Delta, western Guangdong, and eastern Guangdong, with a growth rate of 0.02∼0.04%. The vegetation in northern Guangdong did not change significantly. The main factor of NDVI spatial variation in southern China is the land-use factor, accounting for 79.4% of the variation, while climate factors produce further differences. The contributions and lagged effects of NDVI factors on different land-use types and the lagged effects of different climate factors are different and are related to the climate and vegetation background in Sourthern China. Our study is useful in estimating the contribution of NDVI change by each considered factor and formulating environmentally friendly regional development strategies and promoting human–land harmony.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is recognized as the most powerful clinical imaging modality due to its ability to generate detailed three-dimensional anatomical images with high ...spatial resolution in a non-invasive manner without requiring harmful ionizing radiation. Conventionally, exogenous paramagnetic transition metal ion chelates or iron oxide nanoparticles are used as contrast agents (CAs) to enhance the image contrast of anatomical features. However, despite the wide use of these metal-based CAs, safety concerns have been raised regarding their potential toxic effects resulting from long-term in vivo accumulation. This has driven the development of organic metal-free CAs in various forms for use in MRI. Importantly, functional polymers capable of MRI via different mechanisms represent one of the most promising alternatives to current metal-based MRI CAs due to appealing features such as low toxicity, improved pharmacokinetics and biodistribution profile, and tailored structures and functionalities. Such structural and functional flexibility can enable a myriad of biomedical applications. In this review, we will highlight advances in the development of functional polymers as organic metal-free macromolecular MRI CAs based on different mechanisms including polymeric nitroxide-based 1H MRI CAs, polymeric chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) MRI CAs, and polymeric heteronuclei-based MRI CAs. In addition, the review will address the challenges and future opportunities for these promising classes of metal-free polymeric MRI CAs.

The global land surface cover is undergoing extensive changes in the context of global change, especially in the Loess Plateau, where ecological restoration policies have been vigorously implemented ...since 2000. Evaluating the impact of these policies on land cover is of great significance for regional sustainable development. Nonetheless, there are few quantitative assessment studies of the impact of ecological restoration policies on land use and land cover change (LULCC). In this study, a relative contribution conceptual model (RCCM) was used to explore the contribution of the policies to LULCC under the influence of natural background change, which was based on the Markov chain and the future land use simulation (FLUS) model. The results show that LULCC is influenced by ecological restoration policies and the natural environment, of which the policies contribute about 72.37% and natural change contribute about 27.63%. Ecological restoration policies have a profound impact on LULCC, changing the original direction of LULCC greatly. Additionally, these policies regulate the pattern of LULCC by controlling the amount of cropland as a rebalanced leverage. These findings provide useful information for facilitating sustainable ecological development in the Loess Plateau and theoretically supporting environmental decision-making.

The rise of online sharing platforms has provided people with diverse and convenient ways to share images. However, a substantial amount of sensitive user information is contained within these ...images, which can be easily captured by malicious neural networks. To ensure the secure utilization of authorized protected data, reversible adversarial attack techniques have emerged. Existing algorithms for generating adversarial examples do not strike a good balance between visibility and attack capability. Additionally, the network oscillations generated during the training process affect the quality of the final examples. To address these shortcomings, we propose a novel reversible adversarial network based on generative adversarial networks (RA-RevGAN). In this paper, the generator is used for noise generation to map features into perturbations of the image, while the region selection module confines these perturbations to specific areas that significantly affect classification. Furthermore, a robust attack mechanism is integrated into the discriminator to stabilize the network’s training by optimizing convergence speed and minimizing time cost. Extensive experiments have demonstrated that the proposed method ensures a high image generation rate, excellent attack capability, and superior visual quality while maintaining high classification accuracy in image restoration.

After 2000, China’s vegetation underwent great changes associated with climate change and urbanization. Although many studies have been conducted to quantify the contributions of climate and human ...activities to vegetation, few studies have quantitatively examined the comprehensive contributions of climate, urbanization, and CO2 to vegetation in China’s 32 major cities. In this study, using Global Land Surface Satellite (GLASS) fractional vegetation cover (FVC) between 2001 and 2018, we investigated the trend of FVC in China’s 32 major cities and quantified the effects of CO2, urbanization, and climate by using generalized linear models (GLMs). We found the following: (1) From 2001 to 2018, the FVC in China generally illustrated an increasing trend, although it decreased in 23 and 21 cities in the core area and expansion area, respectively. (2) Night light data showed that the urban expansion increased to varying degrees, with an average increasing ratio of approximately 168%. The artificial surface area increased significantly, mainly from cropland, forest, grassland, and tundra. (3) Climate factors and CO2 were the major factors that affected FVC change. The average contributions of climate factors, CO2, and urbanization were 40.6%, 39.2%, and 10.6%, respectively. This study enriched the understanding of vegetation cover change and its influencing factors, helped to explain the complex biophysical mechanism between vegetation and environment, and guided sustainable urban development.

It is confirmed that China has been greening over the last two decades. Such greening and its driving factors are therefore significant for understanding the relationship between vegetation and ...environments. However, studies on vegetation changes and attribution analyses at the national scale are limited in China after 2000. In this study, fractional vegetation cover (FVC) data from Global Land Surface Satellite (GLASS) was used to detect vegetation change trends from 2001 to 2018, and the effects of CO2, temperature, shortwave radiation, precipitation, and land cover change (LCC) on FVC changes were quantified using generalized linear models (GLM). The results showed that (1) FVC in China increased by 14% from 2001 to 2018 with a greening rate of approximately 0.0019/year (p < 0.01), which showed an apparent greening trend. (2) On the whole, CO2, climate-related factors, and LCC accounted for 88% of FVC changes in China, and the drivers explained 82%, 89%, 90%, and 89% of the FVC changes in the Qinghai–Tibet region, northwest region, northern region, and southern region, respectively. CO2 was the major driving factor for FVC changes, accounting for 31% of FVC changes in China, indicating that CO2 was an essential factor in vegetation growth research. (3) The statistical results of pixels with land cover changes showed that LCC explained 12% of FVC changes, LCC has played a relatively important role and this phenomenon may be related to the ecological restoration projects. This study enriches the study of vegetation changes and its driving factors, and quantitatively describes the response relationship between vegetation and its driving factors. The results have an important significance for adjusting terrestrial ecosystem services.

Chronic pain usually lasts over three months and commonly occurs in chronic diseases (cancer, arthritis, and diabetes), injuries (herniated discs, torn ligaments), and many major pain disorders ...(neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, chronic headaches). Unfortunately, there is currently a lack of effective treatments to help people with chronic pain to achieve complete relief. Therefore,it is particularly important to understand the mechanism of chronic pain and find new therapeutic targets. The exchange protein directly activated by cyclic adenosine monophosphate(cAMP) (EPAC) has been recognized for its functions in nerve regeneration, stimulating insulin release, controlling vascular pressure, and controlling other metabolic activities. In recent years, many studies have found that the subtype of EPAC, EPAC1 is involved in the regulation of neuroinflammation and plays a crucial role in the regulation of pain, which is expected to become a new therapeutic target for chronic pain. This article reviews the major contributions of EPAC1 in chronic pain.
•EPAC is a relatively new downstream signaling molecule of cAMP, which is widely expressed and plays an important role in pathophysiological processes.•EPAC1 has potential value in the treatment of pain-related diseases and is catching widespread concern.•The mechanisms of EPAC1 in pain-related diseases need further exploration.

The quantitative assessment of vegetation resilience and resistance is worthwhile to deeply understand the responses of vegetation growth to climate anomalies. However, few studies comprehensively ...evaluate the spatiotemporal resilience and resistance of global vegetation responses to climate change (i.e., temperature, precipitation, and radiation). Furthermore, although ecosystem models are widely used to simulate global vegetation dynamics, it is still not clear whether ecosystem models can capture observation-based vegetation resilience and resistance. In this study, based on remotely sensed and model-simulated leaf area index (LAI) time series and climate datasets, we quantified spatial patterns and temporal changes in vegetation resilience and resistance from 1982–2015. The results reveal clear spatial patterns of observation-based vegetation resilience and resistance for the last three decades, which were closely related to the local environment. In general, most of the ecosystem models capture spatial patterns of vegetation resistance to climate to different extents at the grid scale (R = 0.43 ± 0.10 for temperature, R = 0.28 ± 0.12 for precipitation, and R = 0.22 ± 0.08 for radiation); however, they are unable to capture patterns of vegetation resilience (R = 0.05 ± 0.17). Furthermore, vegetation resilience and resistance to climate change have regionally changed over the last three decades. In particular, the results suggest that vegetation resilience has increased in tropical forests and that vegetation resistance to temperature has increased in northern Eurasia. In contrast, ecosystem models cannot capture changes in vegetation resilience and resistance over the past thirty years. Overall, this study establishes a benchmark of vegetation resilience and resistance to climate change at the global scale, which is useful for further understanding ecological mechanisms of vegetation dynamics and improving ecosystem models, especially for dynamic resilience and resistance.
