Abstract
In this paper, the epoxy resin composite filled with wood fiber and fly ash cenosphere was prepared. In order to improve the bonding properties between wooden fiber/fly ash cenosphere and ...epoxy resin, the grafting treatment of wooden fiber and fly ash cenosphere surfaces was carried out here using KH550 type silane coupling agent. The effects of different process parameters on the surface modification effect of wooden fiber and fly ash cenosphere were investigated, the mechanical properties and energy absorption characteristics of the materials before and after the filler modification were tested, and the microscopic interfacial structures of the matrix with wooden fiber and fly ash cenosphere were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Meanwhile, based on LS‐DYNA simulation software, the energy‐absorbing performance of energy‐absorbing boxes prepared from AA6061 aluminum alloy and modified wooden fiber‐fly ash cenosphere/epoxy resin composites were compared in low‐velocity collisions.

In this study, a novel microbial fuel cell, i.e. upflow air-cathode membrane-free microbial fuel cell (UAMMFC) was reported and its performance in electricity generation from original leachate was ...examined. The experimental results demonstrated that the UAMMFC could continuously generate electricity from leachate (0.3V; REX=150 Omega) for an operational period of time (50 h). The maximum volumetric power reached 12.8 W/m3 at current density of 41 A/m3 (93 Omega). NH4+-N elimination from the leachate was shown to be a consequence of electrochemistry-independent oxidation occurred in the MFC. Increasing organic loading rate from 0.65 to 5.2 kgCOD/m3 d resulted in a decrease of overall Coulombic efficiency (CE) from 14.4% to 1.2%. The low CE obtained here should be attributed to severe oxygen diffusion from the open-to-air cathode.
We evaluate the thermodynamic properties of the 4-state antiferromagnetic Potts model on the Union-Jack lattice using tensor-based numerical methods. We present strong evidence for a previously ...unknown, "entropy-driven," finite-temperature phase transition to a partially ordered state. From the thermodynamics of Potts models on the diced and centered diced lattices, we propose that finite-temperature transitions and partially ordered states are ubiquitous on irregular lattices.

Large quantities of aluminum carbide nanowires have been prepared by the in situ synthesis of carbon nanotubes within Al powder and heat treatment of the obtained nanotube/Al powder. Scanning and ...transmission electron microscopy, selected area diffraction, and X-ray powder diffraction have been used to characterize the heat-treated composite powders and the initial one. The results showed that the Al
4C
3 nanowires with diameters ranging from 7 to 25
nm and lengths ranging from 1 to 5
μm are single-crystal. Transmission electron microscopy images indicated that growth of the Al
4C
3 nanowires occurs initially by the formation of a thin, uniform carbide coating and that further growth proceeds by inward growth of this coating with a concomitant consumption of the carbon nanotube until a solid Al
4C
3 nanowire is formed. Reactive wetting kinetics between nanotubes and Al were believed to be responsible for the growth mechanism of Al
4C
3 nanowires.

Tensile strength, elongation, static toughness and fracture modes of casting Al–0.63
wt.% Cu and Al–3.9
wt.% Cu alloys subjected to equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) were investigated. It is ...found that the grains of the two alloys can be refined to submicron level after four passes of ECAP. In addition, precipitation phase
θ along grain boundaries in the Al–3.9
wt.% Cu alloy was also broken after ECAP treatment. The tensile fracture strength increases with increasing ECAP pass for both of the Al–Cu alloys, however, the elongation is almost independent of the ECAP pass. Consequently, the static toughness of the Al–Cu alloys is enhanced at high ECAP pass. The failure modes of Al–0.63
wt.% Cu alloy consist of necking and shear fracture, however, Al–3.9
wt.% Cu alloy displays normal fracture and shear fracture with different shear angle. Based on the results above, the tensile properties and failure modes of the Al–Cu alloys are discussed.

Knowledge of the in-situ stress field in the rock mass at depth is important to provide stress boundary conditions for underground excavation design, stability evaluation, and the optimization of ...ground support systems. In the present study, in-situ stress measurement using hydraulic fracturing method is conducted in the Beishan area in Gansu Province, China, a preferred candidate site for China's high-level radioactive waste repository. Information on the stress magnitudes and orientations in three sub-areas is obtained from 136 measurement points in nine sub-vertical boreholes at depths ranging from 30 to 700m, and the distribution characteristics of the in-situ stress field is analyzed. The pressure–time records obtained from the test intervals with pre-existing fractures are discussed according to the acoustic borehole televiewer (BHTV) images. The measurement results indicate that the regional stress field is dominated by horizontal stress within most of the measurement depth ranges. A piecewise distribution of the principal stresses reveals approximately three stress domains with increasing depth. At shallow and medium depths, the stress fields are characterized by σH>σh>σv and σH>σv>σh, respectively, where σH, σh, and σv are maximum horizontal, minimum horizontal, and vertical stresses, respectively. With further increase of depth, the maximum principal stress changes from horizontal to vertical (i.e. σv>σH>σh). Fracture impression results reveal that the maximum horizontal stress is dominantly oriented in the NNE–NEE direction, which is in agreement with the orientation of regional tectonic stress field generated from movement of the Earth's tectonic plates. In addition, it is found that the orientations of σH are affected by the geological structures significantly.
•Geological features of the Beishan area are described.•The results of the hydro-fracturing in-situ stress measurements are presented.•The distribution characteristics of the in-situ stress filed are analyzed.•The regional stress field associated with the geological evolution is discussed.

Summary
Background Heavy ions represent the best tool for external radiotherapy (RT) of inoperable tumours. Heavy ion RT has been used in the treatment of various tumours, especially for ...radioresistant tumours mediated by hypoxia, localized near organs at risk. Most of these treatments are concentrated in deep‐seated tumours such as those of the brain, head, lung, liver, rectum and urogenital organs, and treatment of skin carcinomas is limited.
Objectives To evaluate the outcome and toxicity after carbon ion RT for skin carcinomas at the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou, China.
Methods Between November 2006 and March 2009, 45 patients with skin carcinoma squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) (n = 16), basal cell carcinoma (BCC) (n = 12), malignant melanoma (MM) (n = 7), Bowen disease (n = 8) and Paget disease (n = 2) were treated with carbon ion RT within a clinical Phase I trial. Patients received total doses of 60–70 GyE for SCC and BCC, 61–75 GyE for MM, 60 GyE for Bowen disease and 42·5 GyE for Paget disease, administered in 6–11 fractions over 6–11 days, with a fraction dose of 7–10 GyE.
Results The mean follow‐up was 24 months, range 12–36 months. The actuarial local control rates at 1 and 3 years were 90·9% and 65·5% for SCC, 91·7% and 80·2% for BCC, 85·7% and 42·9% for MM, 90% and 90% for Bowen and Paget diseases, respectively. The actuarial 1‐ and 3‐year overall survival rates for 45 patients were 88·9% and 86%, respectively. No severe side‐effects greater than Common Toxicity Criteria grade 3 have been observed.
Conclusions The results demonstrated that heavy ion RT offers high local tumour control and progression‐free survival rates without significant radiation‐induced toxicity for patients with skin carcinomas.

Artificial synapses are the critical component for low-power neuromorphic computing, which surpasses the limitations of von Neumann's structure. Compared with two-terminal memristors and ...three-terminal transistors with wire formation and charge trapping mechanisms, the emerging electrolytic gated transistor (EGT) has proven to be a promising neuromorphic application due to its outstanding analog switching performance. Candidate. This paper presents a new low-temperature solution-based oxide thin film transistor, which uses an ion-doped dielectric layer. The device also has a low-noise linear conductance update and a relatively high Gmax/Gmin. The realization of ANN neuromorphic calculation has nearly ideal accuracy. These results highlight the potential of EGT based on AlO x -Li/InO x thin-film transistors in the next generation of low-power electronics outside of the von Neumann architecture.
