The three central phenomena of cuprate (copper oxide) superconductors are linked by a common doping level p*-at which the enigmatic pseudogap phase ends and the resistivity exhibits an anomalous ...linear dependence on temperature, and around which the superconducting phase forms a dome-shaped area in the phase diagram
. However, the fundamental nature of p* remains unclear, in particular regarding whether it marks a true quantum phase transition. Here we measure the specific heat C of the cuprates Eu-LSCO and Nd-LSCO at low temperature in magnetic fields large enough to suppress superconductivity, over a wide doping range
that includes p*. As a function of doping, we find that C
/T is strongly peaked at p* (where C
is the electronic contribution to C) and exhibits a log(1/T) dependence as temperature T tends to zero. These are the classic thermodynamic signatures of a quantum critical point
, as observed in heavy-fermion
and iron-based
superconductors at the point where their antiferromagnetic phase comes to an end. We conclude that the pseudogap phase of cuprates ends at a quantum critical point, the associated fluctuations of which are probably involved in d-wave pairing and the anomalous scattering of charge carriers.

This study aims to determine the occurrence and behavior of five classes of 20 antibiotics in both water and sedimentary phases in the Huangpu River, which supplies drinking water to Shanghai City, ...China. Of the 20 antibiotics, sulfonamides showed the highest concentrations in water samples (34-859 ng L(-1)) while tetracyclines (average concentration at 18 μg kg(-1) dry weight) and macrolides (12 μg kg(-1) dry weight) dominated in sediment samples. The spatial distribution of antibiotics showed that the main polluting sources into the river were animal farming sites and the tributaries downstream of the Yuanxie River. In addition, linear relationships between logKoc and logKow, and between logKoc and log molecular weight, were demonstrated, suggesting the importance of contaminant properties in inter-phase behavior. The environmental risk assessment revealed that some antibiotics, in particular sulfamethoxazole could cause medium damage to daphnid in the aquatic ecosystem.

By scaling in the complex domain (namely, complex scaling) the return difference relations of linear continuous-time periodic (LCP) feedback systems, we generalise the 2-regularised stability ...criteria for asymptotic stability in this paper. The stability conditions of the generalised criterion are necessary and sufficient, and involve neither contour and locus orientation specification, nor open-loop Floquet factorisation and its eigenvalues distribution. Finite-dimensional implementation of the suggested criteria is considered via a two-step truncation approach. The finite-dimensional criteria are implementable either graphically with locus plotting, or numerically without locus plotting, besides retaining the aforementioned technical advantages. Furthermore, also exploiting the complex scaling technique, stabilisation of LCP systems with static state feedback is worked out in the internal or external stability sense, whose alternative interpretations in terms of the small-gain theorem and the Gronwall inequality are explicated. To illustrate the main results, the lossy Mathieu differential equation is investigated.

has the largest reported magnitude of any insulator so far
. Because this negative κ
signal grows as the system becomes increasingly insulating electrically, it cannot be attributed to conventional mobile charge carriers. Nor is it due to magnons, because it exists in the absence of magnetic order. Our observation is reminiscent of the thermal Hall conductivity of insulators with spin-liquid states
, pointing to neutral excitations with spin chirality
in the pseudogap phase of cuprates.

There is evidence that Trigonella foenum-graecum L. (fenugreek), a traditional Chinese herb, and its components are beneficial in the prevention and treatment of diabetes and central nervous system ...disease. The pharmacological activities of trigonelline, a major alkaloid component of fenugreek, have been more thoroughly evaluated than fenugreek's other components, especially with regard to diabetes and central nervous system disease. Trigonelline has hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, neuroprotective, antimigraine, sedative, memory-improving, antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-tumor activities, and it has been shown to reduce diabetic auditory neuropathy and platelet aggregation. It acts by affecting β cell regeneration, insulin secretion, activities of enzymes related to glucose metabolism, reactive oxygen species, axonal extension, and neuron excitability. However, further study of trigonelline's pharmacological activities and exact mechanism is warranted, along with application of this knowledge to its clinical usage. This review aims to give readers a survey of the pharmacological effects of trigonelline, especially in diabetes, diabetic complications and central nervous system disease. In addition, because of its pharmacological value and low toxicity, the reported adverse effects of trigonelline in experimental animal models and humans are briefly reviewed, and the pharmacokinetics of trigonelline are also discussed.
The nature of the pseudogap phase of cuprates remains a major puzzle1,2. One of its signatures is a large negative thermal Hall conductivity3, whose origin is as yet unknown. This is observed even in ...the undoped Mott insulator La2CuO4, in which the charge carriers are localized and therefore cannot be responsible. Here, we show that the thermal Hall conductivity of La2CuO4 is roughly isotropic; that is, for heat transport parallel and normal to the CuO2 planes, it is nearly the same. This shows that the Hall response must come from phonons, as they are the only heat carriers that are able to move with the same ease both normal and parallel to the planes4. For doping levels higher than the critical doping level at which the pseudogap phase ends, both La1.6−xNd0.4SrxCuO4 and La1.8−xEu0.2SrxCuO4 show no thermal Hall signal for a heat current normal to the planes, which establishes that phonons have zero Hall response outside the pseudogap phase. Inside the pseudogap phase, the phonons must become chiral to generate the Hall response, but the mechanism by which this happens remains to be identified. It must be intrinsic (from a coupling of phonons to their electronic environment) rather than extrinsic (from structural defects or impurities), as these are the same on both sides of critical doping.Thermal transport measurements show that there is a thermal Hall effect in the out-of-plane direction in two cuprates in the pseudogap regime. This indicates that phonons are carrying the heat and that they have a handedness of unknown origin.

Large scale epitaxial growth and transfer of monolayer MoS2 has attracted great attention in recent years. Here, we report the wafer-scale epitaxial growth of highly oriented continuous and uniform ...monolayer MoS2 films on single-crystalline sapphire wafers by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The epitaxial film is of high quality and stitched by many 0°, 60° domains and 60°-domain boundaries. Moreover, such wafer-scale monolayer MoS2 films can be transferred and stacked by a simple stamp-transfer process, and the substrate is reusable for subsequent growth. Our progress would facilitate the scalable fabrication of various electronic, valleytronic, and optoelectronic devices for practical applications.

Anthropogenic atmospheric emissions of typical toxic heavy metals have caused worldwide concern due to their adverse effects on human health and the ecosystem. By determining the best available ...representation of time-varying emission factors with S-shape curves, we establish the multiyear comprehensive atmospheric emission inventories of 12 typical toxic heavy metals (Hg, As, Se, Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, Sb, Mn, Co, Cu, and Zn) from primary anthropogenic activities in China for the period of 1949-2012 for the first time. Further, we allocate the annual emissions of these heavy metals in 2010 at a high spatial resolution of 0.5 degree 0.5 degree grid with ArcGIS methodology and surrogate indexes, such as regional population and gross domestic product (GDP). Our results show that the historical emissions of Hg, As, Se, Cd, Cr, Ni, Sb, Mn, Co, Cu, and Zn, during the period of 1949-2012, increased by about 22-128 times at an annual average growth rate of 5.1-8.0 %, reaching about 526.9-22 319.6 t in 2012. Nonferrous metal smelting, coal combustion of industrial boilers, brake and tyre wear, and ferrous metal smelting represent the dominant sources of heavy metal emissions. In terms of spatial variation, the majority of emissions are concentrated in relatively developed regions, especially for the northern, eastern, and southern coastal regions. In addition, because of the flourishing nonferrous metal smelting industry, several southwestern and central-southern provinces play a prominent role in some specific toxic heavy metals emissions, like Hg in Guizhou and As in Yunnan. Finally, integrated countermeasures are proposed to minimize the final toxic heavy metals discharge on account of the current and future demand of energy-saving and pollution reduction in China.
The properties of cuprate high-temperature superconductors are largely shaped by competing phases whose nature is often a mystery. Chiefly among them is the pseudogap phase, which sets in at a doping ...p* that is material-dependent. What determines p* is currently an open question. Here we show that the pseudogap cannot open on an electron-like Fermi surface, and can only exist below the doping p
at which the large Fermi surface goes from hole-like to electron-like, so that p* ≤ p
. We derive this result from high-magnetic-field transport measurements in La
Nd
Sr
CuO
under pressure, which reveal a large and unexpected shift of p* with pressure, driven by a corresponding shift in p
. This necessary condition for pseudogap formation, imposed by details of the Fermi surface, is a strong constraint for theories of the pseudogap phase. Our finding that p* can be tuned with a modest pressure opens a new route for experimental studies of the pseudogap.
