Abstract
The direct response of Silicon PhotoMultipliers being
traversed by a MIP charged particle have been studied in a
systematic way for the first time. Using beam test data, time
resolution and ...the crosstalk probability have been measured. A
characterization of the SiPM by means of a laser beam is also
reported. The results obtained for different sensors indicate a
measured time resolution around 40–70 ps. Although particles are
expected to traverse only one SPAD per event, crosstalk measurements
on different sensors indicate an unexpected higher value with
respect to the one related to the sensor noise.
Abstract
The Strip Silicon PhotoMultiplier (SiPM) allows a photosensitive area to be created that has excellent time resolution coupled to good position resolution. However, as the SiPM is made ...larger it becomes more difficult to extract the signal produced by a single photon; we thus are using the NINO ASIC as the front-end amplifier. The NINO ASIC dissipates 40 mW of heat per channel. SiPMs are sensitive to temperature; increasing the temperature leads to higher noise and a higher breakdown voltage. For the best timing performance the front-end electronics should be mounted as close to the SiPM as possible; however if, for example, the front-end electronics are mounted on the backside of the SiPM, it would be very difficult to control the temperature of the SiPM. Given this, we chose to mount the NINO ASIC on the printed circuit board (PCB) away from the strip SiPM so that a cooling system can be added. We present here the performance of an array of 16 strip SiPMs readout by 4 NINO ASICs coupled by ∼5 cm of PCB track length. The performance has been evaluated by the measurement of the Single Photon Time Resolution (SPTR) and also the position resolution along the strip determined from the time difference of the signals at each end.
In this paper, different Silicon PhotoMultiplier (SiPM) sensors have been tested with charged particles to characterize the Cherenkov light produced in the sensor protection layer. A careful position ...scan of the SiPM response has been performed with different prototypes, confirming the large number of firing cells and proving almost full efficiency, with the SiPM filling factor essentially negligible. This study also allowed us to study the time resolution of such devices as a function of the number of firing cells, reaching values below 20 ps. These measurements provide significant insight into the capabilities of SiPM sensors in direct detection of charged particles and their potential for several applications.

We report the results of three MRPC detectors built with soda lime glass and tested in the T10 beam line at CERN. The detectors consist of a stack of 280μm thick glass sheets with 6 gaps of 220μm. We ...built two identical MRPCs, except one had the edges of glass treated with resistive paint. A third detector was built with one HV electrode painted as strips. The detectors' efficiency and time resolution were studied at different particle flux in a pulsed beam environment. The results do not show any improvement with the painted edge technique at higher particle flux. We heated the MRPCs up to 40°C to evaluate the influence of temperature in the rate capability. Results from this warming has indicated an improvement on the rate capability. The dark count rates show a significant dependence with the temperature.

Over the last decade there have been commercial TOF-PET scanners constructed using Photo-Multiplier Tubes (PMT) that have achieved ~500ps FWHM Coincidence Time Resolution (CTR). A new device known as ...the Silicon PhotoMultiplier (SiPM) has the potential to overcome some of the limitations of the PMT. Therefore implementing a SiPM based TOF-PET scanner is of high interest. Recently Philips has introduced a TOF-PET scanner that uses digital Silicon PhotoMultipliers (d-SiPMs) which has a CTR of 350ps. Here we will report on the timing performance of two Hamamatsu 3×3mm2 analogue-SiPMs read out with the NINO ASIC: this is an ultra-fast amplifier/discriminator with a differential architecture. The differential architecture is very important since the single-ended readout uses the ground as the signal return; as the ground is also the reference level for the discriminators, the result is high crosstalk and degraded time resolution. However differential readout allows the scaling up from a single cell to a multi-cell device with no loss of time resolution; this becomes increasingly important for the highly segmented detectors that are being built today, both for particle and for medical instrumentation.
We obtained excellent results for both the Single Photon Time Resolution (SPTR) and for the CTR using a LYSO crystal of 15mm length. Such a crystal length has sufficient detection efficiency for 511keV gammas to make an excellent PET device. The results presented here are proof that a TOF-PET detector with a CTR of 175ps is indeed possible. This is the first step that defines the starting point of our SuperNINO project.

We report the measurement of the time of flight of ∼17 GeV ν(μ) on the CNGS baseline (732 km) with the Large Volume Detector (LVD) at the Gran Sasso Laboratory. The CERN-SPS accelerator has been ...operated from May 10th to May 24th 2012, with a tightly bunched-beam structure to allow the velocity of neutrinos to be accurately measured on an event-by-event basis. LVD has detected 48 neutrino events, associated with the beam, with a high absolute time accuracy. These events allow us to establish the following limit on the difference between the neutrino speed and the light velocity: -3.8 × 10(-6) < (v(ν)-c)/c < 3.1 × 10(-6) (at 99% C.L.). This value is an order of magnitude lower than previous direct measurements.
