ABSTRACT
High-resolution Doppler-resolved spectroscopy has opened up a new window into the atmospheres of both transiting and non-transiting exoplanets. Here, we present VLT/UVES observations of a ...transit of WASP-121b, an ‘ultra-hot’ Jupiter previously found to exhibit a temperature inversion and detections of multiple species at optical wavelengths. We present initial results using the blue arm of UVES (≈3700–5000 Å), recovering a clear signal of neutral Fe in the planet’s atmosphere at >8$\, \sigma$, which could contribute to (or even fully explain) the temperature inversion in the stratosphere. However, using standard cross-correlation methods, it is difficult to extract physical parameters such as temperature and abundances. Recent pioneering efforts have sought to develop likelihood ‘mappings’ that can be used to directly fit models to high-resolution data sets. We introduce a new framework that directly computes the likelihood of the model fit to the data, and can be used to explore the posterior distribution of parametrised model atmospheres via MCMC techniques. Our method also recovers the physical extent of the atmosphere, as well as account for time- and wavelength-dependent uncertainties. We measure a temperature of $3710^{+490}_{-510}$ K, indicating a higher temperature in the upper atmosphere when compared to low-resolution observations. We also show that the Fe i signal is physically separated from the exospheric Fe ii. However, the temperature measurements are highly degenerate with aerosol properties; detection of additional species, using more sophisticated atmospheric models, or combining these methods with low-resolution spectra should help break these degeneracies.
Context. After many attempts over more than a decade, high-resolution spectroscopy has recently delivered its first detections of molecular absorption in exoplanet atmospheres, both in transmission ...and thermal emission spectra. Targeting the combined signal from individual lines in molecular bands, these measurements use variations in the planet radial velocity to separate the planet signal from telluric and stellar contaminants. Aims. We apply high-resolution spectroscopy to probe molecular absorption in the day-side spectrum of the bright transiting hot Jupiter HD 189733b. Methods. We observed HD 189733b with the CRIRES high-resolution near-infrared spectograph on the Very Large Telescope during three nights, targeting possible absorption from carbon monoxide, water vapour, methane, and carbon dioxide, at 2.0 and 2.3 μm. Results. We detect a 5-σ absorption signal from CO at a contrast level of ~4.5 × 10-4 with respect to the stellar continuum, revealing the planet orbital radial velocity at 154+4-3 km s-1. This allows us to solve for the planet and stellar mass in a similar way as for stellar eclipsing binaries, resulting in 0.846+0.068-0.049M⊙ and Mp = 1.162+0.058-0.039 MJup. No significant absorption is detected from H2O, CO2, or CH4 and we determine upper limits on their line contrasts. Conclusions. The detection of CO in the day-side spectrum of HD 189733b can be made consistent with the haze layer proposed to explain the optical to near-infrared transmission spectrum if the layer is optically thin at the normal incidence angles probed by our observations, or if the CO abundance is high enough for the CO absorption to originate from above the haze. Our non-detection of CO2 at 2.0 μm is not inconsistent with the deep CO2 absorption from low-resolution NICMOS secondary eclipse data in the same wavelength range. If genuine, the absorption would be so strong that it blanks out any planet light completely in this wavelength range, leaving no high-resolution signal to be measured.

High-dose chemotherapy causes intestinal inflammation and subsequent breakdown of the mucosal barrier, permitting translocation of enteric pathogens, clinically manifesting as fever. Antibiotics are ...mainstay for controlling these complications, however, they are increasingly recognized for their detrimental effects, including antimicrobial resistance and dysbiosis. Here, we show that mucosal barrier injury induced by the mucotoxic chemotherapeutic agent, high-dose melphalan (HDM), is characterized by hyper-active IL-1b/CXCL1/neutrophil signaling. Inhibition of this pathway with IL-1RA, anakinra, minimized the duration and intensity of mucosal barrier injury and accompanying clinical symptoms, including diarrhea, weight loss and fever in rats. 16S analysis of fecal microbiome demonstrated a more stable composition in rats receiving anakinra, with reduced pathogen expansion. In parallel, we report through Phase IIA investigation that anakinra is safe in stem cell transplant patients with multiple myeloma after HDM. Ramping-up anakinra (100-300 mg administered intravenously for 15 days) did not cause any adverse events or dose limiting toxicities, nor did it change time to neutrophil recovery. Our results reinforce that strengthening the mucosal barrier may be an effective supportive care strategy to mitigate local and systemic clinical consequences of HDM. We are now conducting a Phase IIB multicenter, placebo-controlled, double-blinded trial to assess clinical efficacy of anakinra (AFFECT-2).Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT03233776.

Broad absorption signatures from alkali metals, such as the sodium (Na I) and potassium (K I) resonance doublets, have long been predicted in the optical atmospheric spectra of cloud-free irradiated ...gas giant exoplanets
. However, observations have revealed only the narrow cores of these features rather than the full pressure-broadened profiles
. Cloud and haze opacity at the day-night planetary terminator are considered to be responsible for obscuring the absorption-line wings, which hinders constraints on absolute atmospheric abundances
. Here we report an optical transmission spectrum for the 'hot Saturn' exoplanet WASP-96b obtained with the Very Large Telescope, which exhibits the complete pressure-broadened profile of the sodium absorption feature. The spectrum is in excellent agreement with cloud-free, solar-abundance models assuming chemical equilibrium. We are able to measure a precise, absolute sodium abundance of logε
= Formula: see text, and use it as a proxy for the planet's atmospheric metallicity relative to the solar value (Z
/Z
= Formula: see text). This result is consistent with the mass-metallicity trend observed for Solar System planets and exoplanets

The nearby super-Earth 55 Cnc e orbits a bright (V = 5.95 mag) star with a period of ∼18 hr and a mass of ∼8M⊕. Its atmosphere may be water-rich and have a large-scale height; though, attempts to ...characterize it have yielded ambiguous results. Here we present a sensitive search for water and TiO in its atmosphere at high spectral resolution using the Gemini North telescope and the GRACES spectrograph. We combine observations with previous observations from Subaru and CFHT, improving the constraints on the presence of water vapor. We adopt parametric models with an updated planet radius based on recent measurements, and use a cross-correlation technique to maximize sensitivity. Our results are consistent with atmospheres that are cloudy or contain minimal amounts of water and TiO. Using these parametric models, we rule out a water-rich atmosphere (VMR 0.1%) with a mean molecular weight of 15 g mol−1 at a 3 confidence level, improving on the previous limit by a significant margin. For TiO, we rule out a mean molecular weight of 5 g mol−1 with a 3 confidence level for a VMR greater than 10−8; for a VMR of greater than 10−7, the limit rises to a mean molecular weight of 10 g mol−1. We can rule out low mean-molecular-weight chemical equilibrium models both including and excluding TiO/VO at very high confidence levels (>10 ). Overall, our results are consistent with an atmosphere with a high mean molecular weight and/or clouds, or no atmosphere.
With a dayside temperature in excess of 4500 K, comparable to a mid-K-type star, KELT-9b is the hottest planet known. Its extreme temperature makes KELT-9b a particularly interesting test bed for ...investigating the nature and diversity of gas giant planets. We observed the transit of KELT-9b at high spectral resolution (R ∼ 94,600) with the CARMENES instrument on the Calar Alto 3.5 m telescope. Using these data, we detect for the first time ionized calcium (Ca ii triplet) absorption in the atmosphere of KELT-9b; this is the second time that Ca ii has been observed in a hot Jupiter. Our observations also reveal prominent H absorption, confirming the presence of an extended hydrogen envelope around KELT-9b. We compare our detections with an atmospheric model and find that all four lines form between atmospheric temperatures of 6100 and 8000 K and that the Ca ii lines form at pressures between 50 and 100 nbar while the H line forms at a lower pressure (∼10 nbar), higher up in the atmosphere. The altitude that the core of H line forms is found to be ∼1.4 Rp, well within the planetary Roche lobe (∼1.9 Rp). Therefore, rather than probing the escaping upper atmosphere directly, the H line and the other observed Balmer and metal lines serve as atmospheric thermometers enabling us to probe the planet's temperature profile, thus the energy budget.

We conducted a comprehensive search for optical phase variations of all close-in (a/R sub(sstarf) < 10) planet candidates in 15 quarters of Kepler space telescope data. After correcting for ...systematics, we found eight systems that show secondary eclipses as well as phase variations. Of these, five (Kepler-5, Kepler-6, Kepler-8, KOI-64, and KOI-2133) are new and three (TrES-2, HAT-P-7, and KOI-13) have published phase curves, albeit with many fewer observations. We model the full phase curve of each planet candidate, including the primary and secondary transits, and derive their albedos, dayside and nightside temperatures, ellipsoidal variations, and Doppler beaming. We find that KOI-64 and KOI-2133 have nightside temperatures well above their equilibrium values (while KOI-2133 also has an albedo, >1), so we conclude that they are likely to be self-luminous objects rather than planets. The other six candidates have characteristics consistent with their being planets with low geometric albedos (<0.3). For TrES-2 and KOI-13, the Kepler bandpass appears to probe atmospheric layers hotter than the planet's equilibrium temperature. For KOI-13, we detect a never-before-seen third cosine harmonic with an amplitude of 6.7 + or - 0.3 ppm and a phase shift of -1.1 + or - 0.1 rad in the phase curve residual, possibly due to its spin-orbit misalignment. We report derived planetary parameters for all six planets, including masses from ellipsoidal variations and Doppler beaming, and compare our results to published values when available. Our results nearly double the number of Kepler exoplanets with measured phase curve variations, thus providing valuable constraints on the properties of hot Jupiters.
This study clinically implemented a ready-to-use quantitative perfusion (QP) cardiovascular magnetic resonance (QP CMR) workflow, encompassing a simplified dual-bolus gadolinium-based contrast agent ...(GBCA) administration scheme and fully automated QP image post-processing. Twenty-five patients with suspected obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) underwent both adenosine stress perfusion CMR and an invasive coronary angiography or coronary computed tomography angiography. The dual-bolus protocol consisted of a pre-bolus (0.0075 mmol/kg GBCA at 0.5 mmol/ml concentration + 20 ml saline) and a main bolus (0.075 mmol/kg GBCA at 0.5 mmol/ml concentration + 20 ml saline) at an infusion rate of 3 ml/s. The arterial input function curves showed excellent quality. Stress MBF ≤ 1.84 ml/g/min accurately detected obstructive CAD (area under the curve 0.79; 95% Confidence Interval: 0.66 to 0.89). Combined visual assessment of color pixel QP maps and conventional perfusion images yielded a diagnostic accuracy of 84%, sensitivity of 70% and specificity of 93%. The proposed easy-to-use dual-bolus QP CMR workflow provides good image quality and holds promise for high accuracy in diagnosis of obstructive CAD. Implementation of this approach has the potential to serve as an alternative to current methods thus increasing the accessibility to offer high-quality QP CMR imaging by a wide range of CMR laboratories.

ABSTRACT
High-resolution Doppler spectroscopy is a powerful tool for identifying molecular species in the atmospheres of both transiting and non-transiting exoplanets. Currently, such data are ...analysed using cross-correlation techniques to detect the Doppler shifting signal from the orbiting planet. In this paper we demonstrate that, compared to cross-correlation methods currently used, the technique of Doppler tomography has improved sensitivity in detecting the subtle signatures expected from exoplanet atmospheres. This is partly due to the use of a regularizing statistic, which acts to suppress noise, coupled to the fact that all the data is fit simultaneously. In addition, we show that the technique can also effectively suppress contaminating spectral features that may arise due to overlapping lines, repeating line patterns, or the use of incorrect linelists. These issues can confuse conventional cross-correlation approaches, primarily due to aliasing issues inherent in such techniques, whereas Doppler tomography is less susceptible to such effects. In particular, Doppler tomography shows exceptional promise for simultaneously detecting multiple line species (e.g. isotopologues), even when there are high contrasts between such species – and far outperforms current cross-correlation function (CCF) in this respect. Finally, we demonstrate that Doppler tomography is capable of recovering molecular signals from exoplanets using real data, by confirming the strong detection of CO in the atmosphere of τ Boo b. We recover a signal with a planetary radial velocity semi-amplitude Kp = 109.6 ± 2.2 km s−1, in excellent agreement with the previously reported value of 110.0 ± 3.2 km s−1.
Earlier studies have suggested that severe intestinal mucositis (IM; citrulline < 10 µmol/L) is an independent risk factor for bloodstream infections (BSI) after cytotoxic therapy. Our aim was to ...grade IM in patients receiving commonly used chemotherapy and conditioning regimens, and characterize its relationship with BSI incidence. In a retrospective analysis of remission induction (RI) chemotherapy, or conditioning for autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT; myeloablative conditioning MAC and non-myeloablative and reduced-intensity conditioning NMA/RIC), data were collected on central venous catheter (CVC) characteristics and BSI. The relationship between BSI occurrence and the degree of IM (determined by citrulline levels) and neutropenia was analyzed. In 626 CVC episodes, 268 (42.8%) laboratory-confirmed BSIs (LCBIs) occurred, classified as mucosal barrier injury (MBI)-LCBIs in 179 (28.6%) episodes, central line-associated BSIs in 113 (18.1%) episodes, and catheter-related BSIs in 55 (8.8%) episodes. In NMA/RIC, the mean duration of hypocitrullinemia was 0.77 days, with LCBI and MBI-LCBI occurring in 11.1% and 4.8% of episodes. In autologous HSCT, RI, and MAC allogeneic HSCT, LCBI and MBI-LCBI occurred frequently (40.0-63.8% and 22.8-53.2% of episodes, respectively) and the mean duration of hypocitrullinemia was significantly higher (9.2-13.8 days). There was a strong correlation between LCBI and the duration of hypocitrullinemia (Pearson's correlation coefficient R = 0.96), as opposed to the relationship between LCBI and the duration of neutropenia (R = 0.42). We conclude that citrulline can be used to grade BSI risk for commonly used intensive treatment regimens.
